Gladiators of Zirnakaynin PbP (Inactive)

Game Master Feral

The PCs are slave gladiators in the famed Drow city, fighting to survive and win glory (and perhaps, eventually, freedom) in the arena, whilst becoming embroiled in the intrigues of their drow masters between bouts. Skewed a lot towards the 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' TV show style and pseudo-Roman gladiator styles.

Nice pics all round... of course with Ivan's we'll just have to imagine him minus the armour and clad in nothing but his groin-hugging loincloth... :)

The cell doors can be locked, but generally aren't - the guards don't seem to care much what the gladiators do, as long as they don't make life hard for the guards (such as by trying to escape or head up to the villa or anything against the rules like that). Dwarvern drinking songs would only be tolerated for so long, however... (although they'll forgive Ivan his boisterousness this time, considering the night he's had...).

The things people have posted for what they're planning are fine: it's basically so that I've got an idea what sort of stuff the characters may be looking to do (and so that I don't write something like, '... twenty days later...' only to be met by a chorus of players yelling, 'But I wanted to...' :) ).

On a more crunch side of things, you can post what (if anything) your character is planning (re)training (via the retraining rules). After level one it may well be boosting Hit Points, but at the moment the only 'extra' you can get via training would be learning a new language - that takes 20 days, but if you want a guideline of how well your character's language skills are progressing, then use a Linguistics (or Int) or Sense Motive (or Wis) check against a DC of (20 minus the number of days trained so far) to see if you understand something spoken in the language you're trying to learn. Other than that, it should be possible to retrain most stuff (as per the normal rules), as long as it fits with making the character more 'gladiatorial' (since that's the training they're undergoing). Even seemingly academic stuff (like learning languages) won't be classroom learning in this case: the characters still go through their grueling daily training regime, only they're making the effort to pick up the language (or whatever) from their fellows at the same time. Hopefully that all makes some sense (and clearly some people won't have anything to train or retrain at the moment), but ask if you're not sure. Obviously, I'll mention in posts when days have passed.

Are you waiving the gold cost? Cause at the moment none of us can afford even the most basic retraining.

The Exchange

LOL - yes, sorry... that's Loscivia's investment in you guys... and you wonder why she's so keen that you earn coin for her... ;)

What are the consequences for fighting among the slaves?

What are the options for spending our coin?

The only thing that comes to mind right now is additional/higher quality food.

That's not something that's cropped up, yet - what with the raw recruits being worked so hard - so Hull's not really sure. He's pretty certain that seriously damaging or destroying (i.e. killing) Loscivia's property (i.e. slaves) wouldn't go down very well... but the Mistress of the House mostly seems, as far as she's revealed, to be interested in the bottom line and little else... so as long as it doesn't cost her anything, there's a good chance she'd not care...

... The guards likewise seem pretty laissez-faire... although maybe a coin or two in their direction would make certain of that...

Segovax Halfblood wrote:

Well, bribing the guards to look the other way springs to mind... ;)

... but it's not entirely clear to the characters yet... although Radric is hot on the case of trying to learn more...

Ah. In the meantime Segovax is going to assume that the coin is just meant for food and whores. =P

Male Halfling Transmuter 3

I would argue that Hull would know because his dad was a gladiator. Next question, however: I'm a little unclear on when this confrontation with Narsius is taking place. Is it the next day (in other words, do I have all my spells back?

The Exchange

It's the next day, but spellcasters access to things like spellbooks and Witch familars (or masks...) is limited just like access to other weaponry: issued when needed... so he's not had the access to memorise new spells (he's still got any he didn't cast, of course, and the cantrips he had prepared).

It might be worth getting some muscle.

Narsius might be a bit bitter about his brother's loss.

Hull wouldn't turn down help if someone heard his shout and volunteered, but he wouldn't back down and go looking for help, either. There are appearances to be maintained...

Alright.

@ProfPotts: Why do people always make comparisons to chess when they're manipulating someone? Diplomacy would be more accurate... XD

Well... I thought 'Captain Park's Imaginary Polar Expedition' would have been too vague a game reference... ;)

The Exchange

Room-wise I suggest Kyzrak move in with Hull, if he's not staying with the other drow, as single-occupancy rooms are a privilage none of the new gladiators have earned yet. That'd make it:

Nathrae / Lorelei
Ivan / Jade / Radric
Hull / Kyzrak
Segovax / Ragnar
Aspexia / Narsius

... for the named gladiators. The rooms take two or three people each.

Sure, I have no problem with that.

Boring to watch!?

The creative part comes after Seg's dominated his opponent. =P

Yes, but up until then it's basically 'unstoppable force vs. immovable object'. The audience might end up falling asleep before then.

The Exchange

By the way... what is Lorelei armed with anyway? Apart from a winning smile and a skimpy outfit, of course... ;)

Isn't she a rudiarius?

The Exchange

Nope, she's a peregrinus (vanilla Sorcerers wouldn't have much use for a rudem anyway)... she's got a hand crossbow and dagger listed now (her combat section is slowly filling up!) - could be a short sword (or gladius) or rapier she's using though, as they're drow 'racial weapons'.

Oh, yeah. That's Radric I'm thinking of. Derp.

Is there a unarmed specialist among the ludus?

I like the bromance Segovax might be starting with Ragnar but he's picking up a monk level at two and it might make sense for him to be training for that.

There was Chao--she specialized in the cestus.

Of course, her new speciality is 'fertilizer'. XD

Self-taught it is.

Maybe it'll come about as a way to circumvent Ragnar's shield more reliably. Grapple checks don't care about silly tower shields.

And oh my god, don't let Ivan try sparring with Lorelei :P

don't worry... dwarves have a habit of... growing on people.. eventually... over a few decades maybe.... if they don't kill the dwarf first... lol.

Haven't had a dwarf grow on me yet, and I've read Tolkien, played Warhammer, seen Snow White AND Once Upon a Time, played a whole party of seven of them myself when I was a young teen and now reached my fifth decade.

Though Jade is sharing cell with you, so there's hope...

Here's one of those maps I don't do... Ludus training yard...

... and with text.

Crude, but hopefully it makes some sense?

I'm tempted to call shenanigans, but I'm not interested in pissing off Pharnox.

I really need to boost my Constitution.

And I'm wondering what the hell I did to piss Pharnox off for him to pit me against you. XD

Nothing, probably. He's just pitting his two top students against each other.

Dwarves are my hubby's favorite race to play, I usually stick with humans or one of the smaller races. I'm 5'1" and I like being small. :)

Nathrae, just grind against Seg's crotch and see if you can distract him? :P

There is a whole fetish about that sort of thing you know. ;)

Well, I don't think Nathrae shares that particular fetish.

She's all for rough sex, but not THAT rough XD

I don't suppose Radric can fix you up?
