Boram the Burglar |
Boram is shown to the stranger's room. With a thorough search of the WINDOW and DESK, Boram finds the secret compartment, but this one holds a letter --->>>> Link to letter found
Hey GM Tribute, the link won't let me open it, I log on to google docs and it says I have to be invited.
Dvalin Fafnirson |
It was bound to happen sooner or later, I guess.
Best of luck with those finals, Adrian!
PS: You are not the weak one...you got the priorities right-!
Dvalin Fafnirson |
yep agghh. But also would be interested in that human who likely killed rodrik.
We have a "general" description of him. Not sufficient to identify, but if we can, in some way, find out where he went...
If he spent several hours in his room waiting, then it's quite reasonable a well-trained hunting dog could pick up his scent.
Then we could find out if that person is still in the city. Or, if not, see where or how he exited Trunau.
And if he went out of the city, it stands to reason there may be a trail to follow, since it's just been last night.
If, on the other hand, the guy is still in Trunau, then the dog trailing to him, the general description of the innkeeper, the lack of an alibi, involvement with a person as named in the letter, and some interrogation may well yield information on the background of this tragic event.
Yarask of House Dace |
We may certainly try that. Of course there's no garantee it will work or they have an adequate hound in Trunau, but we can try. Maybe we could split the group? The ones better suited for diplomacy could pay a visit to the half orc girlfriend while the others follow the trail of the assassin?
Yarask of House Dace |
The words every GM wants to hear, 'We split the party.'
Indeed... but we already did once and there's quite a few of us anyway :P
Boram the Burglar |
if we are going to spit the party lets talk to girlfriend and find the oracle Katrezra first, he is going to have the information we need about the cause of the death, the girlfriend might know where he is.
Once our GM has answered the questions posted we may have a better direction
Dvalin Fafnirson |
true all that, but I think the girlfriend will also be around tomorrow to talk with, unless she gets killed too.
the trail, if there is one, may run cold. All it takes is a nightly rain and there's nothing left to follow.
So aye, i'm in favor of splitting the party if needed, let those skilled with words try their luck with visiting people, let those not capable of social interactions try and see if there's tracks we can follow.
If there's no such dog available, we could still ask the guardians at the gates. We have a general description and by the sound of it, he was not a local(otherwise the innkeeper would have recognized them).
So there's 3 options imho:
a.: it was an outsider and he left...then guards should possibly remember him by description.
b.: it was an outsider and he is still in trunau...in that case, trouble may be just around the corner, because surely he would not stay and wait out an investigation unless he has reason to.
and c.: it was a outsider OR local that masked his appearance by magic. The fact some half orc-local oracle goes missing just at the time of his death may point towards this option...
in which case we'd be back to options a and b...either he left, in which case we need to follow a trail while its there to follow, or he's still in the city, in which case trouble will be imminent.
either way, I think it makes sense to try and follow option a, or eliminate it as possibility and prepare for option b.
Boram the Burglar |
so as I understand it, talky people find the oracle Katrezra first then talk to the girlfriend, the tracky people go after the killer, either with a dog or without, sounds like a plan.
Any other ideas?
Dolgrym Giantfoe |
I saw we stick together and question the girlfriend. Following tracks that are hours old is difficult in a town. We would first have to find out a way to identify his tracks and then follow them among all the other tracks.
The girlfriend being a half orc may be more chummy with the oracle and know where he went.
My 2 copper.

only you got it wrong.
if a dog is available, we try to track by scent, which should not be a big deal if the trail is a few hours old.
if a dog is not available, we try to find out, via guards, if they remember that person coming into or leaving trunau.
With the way they are permanently under threat I doubt someone could easily scale the walls and not be seen doing so, otherwise their defense is laughable at best.
Even so, we would then look for tracks OUTSIDE the city, where it's not that hard to follow even if the trail is a few hours old. If he did NOT leave through the gates, and we find NO trail outside the city, then chances are he is still here.
If we do find something, all the better, but as you say, that chance diminishes the longer we wait, so I say we act on that first. That girlfriend is not going anywhere, plus regarding splitting, it would seem we are not under inmediate threat in the vicinity of the city...unless whoever is responsible is still here, and in that case, all the more important we know that, and we are enough that 2 groups of 3+ dwarfs should be quite capable to fend for themselves-
Yarask of House Dace |
in the next couple of days I'll be away for work and my ability to post will be severely limited. I'll try to do it using my phone but things could get sketchy. Let me know if this is a huge problem. Thanks in advance
Yarask of House Dace |
Thanks. I'll be away tuesday, friday and part of thursday, when I'm coming home. I can resort to my phone for posts if needed but I won't be able to help much.
Dvalin Fafnirson |
... and I'll be back and fully operational
So, Mr. Bond, witness the power of this fully operational T-800 Dwarf. You may fire up the rage when ready, Yarask!
and my nonsensical post of the day is done because I got a busy 36 hours ahead

So rodrik lost the hopeknife and someone got ahold of it and murdered him with it. But who would know about his investigation?
Yeah. strikes me as odd too.
I mean, on one hand, it makes sense that a person here would commit suicide with their hope knife, for availability.
But if he lost his prior, then it's obvious he can't commit suicide with it.
Then, the question is: Why was he murdered with his own hopeknife? Was that supposed to be symbolic in some way? A message? Something personal?
Plus if it was made so that it LOOKS like a suicide, it may be that he got drugged or sedated, after trusting the person who later murdered him.
I don't know about you guys, but if someone just enters my room trying to murder me, it won't exactly look like a suicide afterwards, there'd be signs of struggle and all that.
So, it could be he KNEW that person, maybe even intended to meet them, then got drugged up and got murdered in a very personal way, possibly as a message to someone.
(that, plus that letter to melira that got left behind).
Ogden Greyhammer |
Or he may have just been sleeping and then positioned. But he lost it, so whoever murdered him or an accomplice found it during the investigation. I think it was simply an easy way to make it look like suicide.

yeah, I would like to get a heal check on that.
Even if you surprise someone during sleep, you will usually EITHER have to make the application of force so sudden that suicide is not likely(you can't cut your own throat that way), or so "minimal"(slitting wrists) that the person WILL wake up and throw a tantrum.Killing him in his sleep in a way that it LOOKS like suicide? Very difficult, unless some spell, poison or drugs were involved. Hence why a heal check on the body may be in order, looking for signs for any of those.
Yarask of House Dace |
The girlfriend had the knowledge and the chance but she seems to really have loved Rodrick. Who else could have wanted him dead? Maybe his father for his relationship with an half orc?
P. S.
Tomorrow evening I'll be back and you'll witness ALL THE RAAAAGE!!! :P
GM Tribute |
OK, first combat. You are doing well in the investigation. We will shoot with a combat round a day minimum. I will put the enemies at one initiative when feasible.
You can right click on your avatar to save picture as -- I like to pick jpeg, and use that to make a token on the combat map. As I had no canned map and used the Trunau map, lets try to get for tokens across in a square as they are at least 20x20 squares.
Hope we are having fun so far!!
Feel free to remind me if something is not addressed as you ask it. I missed the autopsy request, and added that.
No one has any weapons in hand, as that would look too menacing. They can be retrieved with a move action.
From here on out, though, feel free to specify if you are moving around with drawn weapons. It may have diplomatic consequences.

Well, we did plan on using a dog to try and catch the attackers scent from the knife and room, and use it to try and track IN trunau.
=>But I reckon no such dog is available? Also, we considered the graffiti to be guidance markers for attackers, and as a consequence suggested that some additional white swords be painted in exposed areas that the city watch/militia could cover from ambush positions(e.g. flat ground next to a building that allows to shoot from cover, and guard a single building entrance against intrusion from superior numbers due to being a choke point)
=>until we know what Rodrik was trying to uncover, Dvalin would be pretty insistent on that plan. Stuff like that can save lives if sh*t hits the whirling dervish.
From here on out, though, feel free to specify if you are moving around with drawn weapons. It may have diplomatic consequences.
Not the most diplomatic of guys, but I'm not going to move around a civilized area with weapons drawn(exception: e.g. if at night, streets are empty and dark, no civilians around, Dvalin will casually hold his weapon in hand)
I will, however, be more watchful in the future inside Trunau.(Walk in middle of road for better view before turning corners, look out for a lack of people and/or weird sounds...)@team: Also, it seems whoever was the culprit is still around and nervous. At least assuming those wolves did not get driven here by hunger and picked a group of armed warriors by chance.
I suggest the guard initiate lockdown...no one leaves without good reason.
Ogden Greyhammer |
Yep, and they would have to make it past the 'alerted and watchful' guards at the gates, so I would guess someone let them in and showed them the way.
Yarask I rolled init etc for you since you said you were out today as well, and I put your avatar on the map.
Having fun DM!
Boram the Burglar |
So basically init. before monsters and init. after monsters, when the monsters can share init. rolls.
Would anyone be offended if I change the icons to 1/4 the size of the city squares? yeah, I'm anal-retentive, sorry.
Dvalin Fafnirson |
not only you, boram, not only you...
