Grok is able to maintain his composure despite the horrifying images of the haunt and the direct assault on his psyche. As the images fade, you get the sense that the haunt is suppressed, but you don't believe it's been destroyed. It's probably safe to move into the room now, but at some point it will again be a hazard.

Do you want to search the room with beds, or move to the other door that you haven't gone through?

A quick search doesn't yield anything... but a thorough search does. (GM fiat!)

Searching through the ashes of furniture in the corner of the rooms, you find some things probably left behind by patients. You find an ornate hopeknife (but not a special one relevant to your investigation) worth 100gp, a heart-shaped locket worth 45gp, and 63 sp.

Who's tracking unclaimed loot?

Perhaps more interestingly, hidden under the bed in square H12, there's a trap door in the floor.

Let me know how you proceed.

Racket detects no traps.

The trap door opens. There is a ladder leading down to another room below.

Embedded into the floor of this chamber is a ten-foot-diameter granite emblem of a faded gold and white longsword. Four passages lead out of the chamber in different directions. A portcullis blocks the southern exit, and a sturdy wooden door leads west. A ladder in the southern corner of the room leads upward (to where you are), and a small chest and decrepit bookshelf face one another from opposite walls.

You all climb down the ladder to the room below. It takes some doing to get Brawd the wolf down, but eventually you make it.

Below, you can see that there are passageways off in several directions, all of which either branch or lead to a couple of doors. The room is not lit except for what you brought with you.

A small chest and a decrepit bookshelf face each other from opposite walls.

The room appears to be empty. However, there's not much dust, so the room is getting regular use right now; it's just that whatever the occupant is, he's not here at the moment.

The bookshelf has a partially destroyed copy of the Acts of Iomedae, the primary holy text of the cult of Iomedae, and several other weathered scriptures.

Zavier does not believe the chest to be trapped, but he might want to ask Racket about that. He does see a lever in the wall next to the portcullis.

The chest is not locked, and Racket doesn't find any traps on it.

Inside, it looks like a combination of a supply chest, and storage for some valuables. Racket suspects that some of this may be goods stolen from townsfolk. As a budding alchemist, Racket has no trouble recognizing some of the items as being alchemical in nature. Inside the chest is1 ounce of sovereign glue, 2 doses of universal solvent, 50 feet
of silk rope, a disguise kit (with 6 uses remaining), a set
of thieves’ tools, a noble's outfit worth 75 gp, a signet ring
worth 50 gp, and coins totaling 237 gp, 155 sp, and 55 cp.

Sense Motive DC15:

The aforementioned lack of dust suggests that this room is still in use, but whoever is normally here isn't here right now. If you want to catch them by surprise, you might want to leave the stuff in the chest, or think about how you might catch them later if you don't find them now.

Heading north (really northwest; north is up and to the right on the map), ten feet down there are two doors, one on the northwest wall, one on the northeast wall to your right. As you get closer, you hear a muffled voice coming from behind the door to the North.

"Help me! Help me!"

Racket deftly unlocks the iron door (I'll use the disable device check you rolled for the chest, since you didn't need it there.)

An old cast-iron furnace and a pile of coal occupy the corners of the cramped chamber beyond the door. Ash and fallen rubble clutter the area around the furnace where the chimney above has collapsed. Also in here, tied up, is a young man! He is the one calling for help.

From behind, Nilus looks around the rest of you and says, "Othdan, is that you?"

The young man looks up and says to Racket and Zavier (who are in front), "Who are you? Help me! A half-orc tied me up here!"

A picture of Othandan on the wiki.

However, as he approaches the Rubble, a couple of creatures jump out at him! Thanks to his perception, he's not surprised. The creatures look like rats, but they have only patches of fur, empty eye sockets, and translucent skin. Zombie rats!

Monster knowledge:

Knowledge (Religion) DC15:

These are "Shadow Rats" -- they are able to become incorporeal, which means a magic weapon or a spell is needed to hit them. They aren't always incorporeal, and can only do that for an hour a day.

Knowledge (Religion) DC20:

Their bite does Strength damage, and can transmit disease. They can also disappear into shadows, giving a 50% miss chance; daylight or direct sunlight would mitigate this, but regular light won't.
