In a brief period of sobriety on the 6th day Kraygan brings up an idea to Torgan while loading the cart at the Brewery.

"So, cousin, since we're headed into giant territory, I'm thinkin we might want a good bow. Yer sling's a decent weapon, but giants can throw twice as far. Not sure we got enough to buy decent ones individually, but what do ye two think about goin in on one together?"

***

Later in the day Kraygan finds Wren and offers a couple scrolls to the elf. "Cap'n, I got a couple magic scrolls. Think ye could hold on to 'em and cast 'em on one o' me weapons when appro'prit?"

Bought 2 scrolls of magic weapon. Not sure if Wren can cast that, but Kraygan lumps most magic into the same category - gibberish.

"A map yesay Cap'n? Lemme see." Once Wren produces the stone he looks closer, his eyes crossing at the effort. "Uhhhhh... They both look th' same t' me."

Wren returns Kraygan's mocking salute with a sneer and middle finger 'salute' of his own.

"Yeah, it's a map. I guarantee it. We should copy it and destroy the rock. I don't care what Halgra says. We put ourselves at more risk by keeping this around. And the weapons? We'll see if they are powerful enough to earn us passage into the Redfort. If they aren't, we may need to think for ourselves about next steps."

Wren taps his lips, thinking about the lantern. He opens it up and looks inside. Is there a dead wisp husk within?

Wren meets the gaze of Jorgan for a moment before finding something else to scowl at.

"So one of you can keep sober, huh?" Wren says, rising to his feet. "Well, let's go then. Might as well see if the shops have things that will help us."

* * *@Jorgan during shopping trip:

"How come you don't drink like the rest? And what do you know of magics, dwarf? I ain't seen much but the most basic of healings out of you."

Wren peruses the magics of the shop, something he had done before, but was passing time as if he had coin to spend.

Wren groans, his eyes and hands frantically searching all of the lantern.

"It's empty. That bastard Silvermane gave us an empty lantern. It's empty!" Wren looks around to see if the dwarves understand. In case they don't, he explains about the lantern. "AH PIDDLESPOT!"

Ghostlight Lantern:

Ghostlight Lantern: This brass bullseye lantern is embossed with dancing orbs flitting amid a leaf-and-holly motif. A ghostlight lantern
functions as a normal bullseye lantern, but if the remains of a dead will-o’-wisp are placed inside it, the lantern gains additional abilities. The dead will-o’-wisp powers the lantern for a period of 1 week, during which time the lantern sheds a bluish-white light without the need for oil as fuel. Creatures within the 60-foot cone of the lantern’s normal light are outlined with a pale, bluish glow, as faerie fire. Orcs within the cone are dazzled, as if in bright sunlight, for as long as they remain within the light. Additionally, three times per day as a standard action, the wielder of a ghostlight lantern can draw upon the power of the deceased will-o’-wisp fueling it to cast shocking grasp. Lastly, while within the bounds of Ghostlight Marsh in the Hold of Belkzen, a ghostlight lantern unerringly emits a beacon that illuminates a direct path to the circle of standing stones that form the entrance to the Vault of Thorns. After 1 week, the power of the deceased aberration is exhausted, and the ghostlight lantern loses its additional abilities, once again functioning only as a normal bullseye lantern until another dead will-o’-wisp is placed inside.

Wren turns over the lantern, his eyes and movements becoming a bit more frantic. "We ain't got no wisp husks, do we? I don't suppose that's a ingredient you have on hand?"

Wren finally sits down, crestfallen.

"We gotta find not only a wisp...but a way to kill a wisp. I have no idea how to even go about doing that."

Wren looks at the dwarves, wondering if they have any bright ideas.

Feel free to continue the RP as it is a large portion of the day reaching the boat

The group sets out for the boat later in the morning. The 18 miles proves to be quite uneventful as you reach the boat in the early evening. You are greeted by Raag Bloodtusk who looks over your letter of introduction.

Raag Bloodtusk's riverboat is a large modified keelboat with a sturdy wooden hull. Assembled from the scavenged wrecks of several other vessels, the riverboat looks quite ungainly, with a wide forecastle and towerlike structure at the bow, and high aftcastle at the stern. The boat is 120 feet long and 30 feet wide with a draft of 10 feet. It has a single mast with a large sail as well as rowing banks. To assist in traveling upstream the boat contains 8 large horses within the stables that can be put ashore to help pull the boat upstream.

Standing behind Bloodtusk on the deck of the boat are 9 other crew members leaning on the edge of the railing, seemingly sizing up the group of yak riders. The crew consists of all half-orcs, including the Captain and one full-blooded orc (The First Mate)

In a gruff voice Bloodtusk speaks to you. While on board you will be considered part of the crew and will be expected to partake in the daily duties aboard my vessel and will defend it with yer lives. If anything bad happens I will be looking to yer lot to do the fighting while my crew here continues the journey and their duties. You will be taking all commands to Coxswain here. Bloodtusk jabs a meaty green thumb back at the full-blooded orc aboard the vessel.

We will set out at first light. Coxwain will explain your duties and show you where to put your gear.

Captain Bloodtusk turns and walks up the ramp into his cabin.

Coxswain waits patiently at the top of the deck.

Jorgan goes quiet once again, pretending to look at several items. "Aye, you ain't seen much more'n healing and to tell it truthfully I ain't got much more. But me and Hops, we got a connection after so many years and it seems I get a connection with most animals. Not them ruddy shadow rats, mind you, but plain ol' animals. 'Spose that's where the magic comes from, eh? You seem to know more about it than I. Just comes natural to me."

Jorgan decides not to buy anything other than what was already on the list compiled earlier and takes a sigh as he looks Wren in the eyes. "Well, elf, we better get to the boat, eh?"

After the meeting, Vanderhoff disappears into his chambers and doesn't answer the door for anyone, nor sees to leave to take food or drink.

Emerging the day of departure, he strides through town with purpose, stooping off to purchase some equipment, then returning to the stable to get out Vanderhoof, to yak saddled and ready, a long lance holstered on its side.

His eyes gleaming he smiles as meets his party, giving each a strong hug and a hearty slap on the back....including Wren. "I have been praying to Angradd for guidance, and I think I've had a vision. We aren't just marching off to help Trunau, we're marching off to war! Glorious war!" He says, his voice tinged with a sort of awe. "I've spent my time, praying, fasting, and studying tactics. As you know, dwarves have a long tradition of war, and I think that tradition, with Angradd's guidance will serve as well." He slaps the backs of his companions again, and taking a deep breath, he sighs loudly and leads Vanderhoof onto the ship.

Once Hoof' is stabled, he begins pacing the ship, mumbling to himself. Listening to the captain, Van nods. "Does this boat have any weapons to mount on the deck? Heavy crossbows, light ballista, of anything of that sort?" He asks.

"Yes, but there is one thing I must do first," Wren replies dryly. "You and your kin seem awfully trusting of his lantern working though...though...nevermind...I shall go seek an answer. If I fail to find it, this might be a short trip indeed."

All y'all dwarves are welcome to come with Wren on this fact finding mission...

Wren, when he finishes with the shopping, will go seek out Silvermane. He has avoided the older old elf ever since he had come to town. His fear of his own secrets getting out easily overcoming any racial friendliness he might have had.

He approaches Silvermane with the Ghostlight in one hand, inkpen and paper in the other. One the paper are inscribed 3 questions:

  • Do you have a wisp husk?
  • Where can we get a wisp husk?
  • Why would you think the lamp would work without the core component?

Wren tries to keep his frustration both at the overall situation and his role in it in check.

Wren bites back his own feelings. He nods at Vanderhoff.

He's not wrong. We go off to war...where we will likely die. Let us hope it is a good death.

"We are the Axes of Trunau," Wren repeats.

Wren boards the boat, grimacing as he sees the racial make up of the crew. Most, if not all, of his worldly possessions (meager as they are) lie upon his person: either in his belt pouch or in his newly acquired haversack.

He tries to remain calm while the orc and half-orc deckhands move about him, but that does not stop him from checking his purse or flinching whenever one of them comes up from behind.

He says little, and does even less work. He chooses not to report to the coxswain. If pressed, he will offer to do leatherwork for the ship...in a place where his legs are not taxed and certainly in a place where he can be alone and relatively protected.

Silvermane curiously glances at Wren as he approaches. Picking up the ink he responds to Wren's letter in kind.

  • I do not have a wisp husk
  • It is said that there are groups of Wisps that occupy the Ghostlight Marsh. The orcs are afraid of the area and steer clear of it due to anytime one enters they do not return.
  • I do not believe the lamp will work without the husk of a wisp.

As the group boards the boat Coxswain gathers the dwarf crew as she snaps her fingers at Wren. Hey Elf. Over here.

Halgra negotiated passage on our ship which means you will be working just as hard if not harder than the rest of the crew. Everyone will help row the riverboat as well as perform another duty throughout the day.

The orc holds out a sheet of paper.

These are the additional duties. You can choose where to help out yourselves or I can choose for you.

Coxwain hands the list to Jorgan.

  • Cooking- You can help the boats cook, Gashnakh, in preparing meals and cleaning, stocking and maintaining the galley. A successful DC 10 Profession Cook check or Intelligence check is enough to cook a palatable meal.
  • Fishing- You can help haul in the day's catch to feed the crew. A successful Dc 10 Profession Fisherman; DC 18 Survival or DC 10 Strength check is required to haul in the boats fishing nets. Four nets are cast into the waters each day and up to two individuals can haul in each net each morning. (One attempts the check while the other assists) At least one success is enough food to feed everyone on board for 1 day.
  • Lookout-You can watch for hazards from the crow's nest atop the mast. Three successful DC 10 Climb checks are required to get to the crow's nest. Anyone sitting in the Crow's nest receives +2 to Perception checks to notice approaching threats.
  • Rowing-You will all spend 5 hours rowing the keelboat in the rowing banks. This requires a DC 5 Profession Sailor or a DC 10 Strength check. At the end of your shift you must also succeed at a Dc 10 Con check or become fatigued.
  • Sounding- You help the keelboat's pilot avoid the shallows along the riverbed with a DC 10 Profession Sailor or DC 15 Perception check from the Forecastle. If you fail by 5 or more the ship runs aground adding 1 additional day to the journey.
  • Stable Mucking-You will maintain the horses and the stable with a Dc 10 Handle Animal check; DC 10 Profession Stable Master or Dc 15 Ride Check. If you fail by 5 or more on two consecutive days 1 of the horses gets sickened adding 1 day of travel to the journey.

The journey will take roughly 6 days. Don't worry too much we have traveled these rivers dozens of times though there are still many dangers

The orc woman leads you across the deck. Bring your gear She opens the door to a cramped room. Here is where you will be sleeping. Cots hang all across the walls with a locked footlocker right underneath each one.

Yes at the stern of the boat we have a ballista that we have set up for 360 degree of fire. Though it takes three of the crew to fire it.Three crew are required to operate it. All three must take full round actions to load the ballista in 1 round. On the following round two rew aim the ballista with full round actions while the third fires the weapon. Absent from the meeting topside, Kraygan had descended into the stable below with all the mounts directly upon arrival, and that is where Torgan finds him, grooming his yak and looking a little green. If he didn't know him better, his cousin might think that Kraygan was drunk, or recovering from a hangover. But the sturdy dwarf had not overindulged on the ride to the river, nor had he completely abstained. And besides that, Kraygan rarely suffers from alcohol sickness.
"There ye go Haggis, there ye go." He says as he brushes down his yak. "No need t' be worried. Jus' a little trip on th' water and then we'll be back on dry land."
If the yak is worried, it shows little sign of it. Standing in the hold and munching on feed, it has its usual look, which is somewhere between boredom and annoyance.

Kraygan considers himself the stable master for his cousins brewery, and he already has a rank in profession stable master. :)

The night is restless as the sounds of the land are heard all throughout the night. It is a clear sky as the moon gives enough illumination to see more than just fish in the water. Groups of large crocodiles swarm about eating their meals while birds fly in the distance.

Day One

As Coxswain said the boat begins to depart at first light as the entire ship is awoken to begin their tasks. The Orc begins barking orders all throughout the vessel as he heads down to the rowing docks below deck.

Kraygan and Jorgan head to the Stables which house not only the Yaks but also eight heavy horses.
