Kraygan Steelkeg |
The bombadier is outside Kraygan's threat range (waraxe doesn't have the same reach as the lance. :( But the green orc will get one! :)
@Wren: blue will probably be dead before Wren can shoot him. You might want to redirect to the bombadier. Or are we just going in the order we post for initiative? If so, then you might have freed up Torgan to do something else.
AoO Green: 1d20 + 6 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 1 + 1 = 10 geez..

Kraygan swipes at the orc as it crosses the barricade, but his eye catches the next wave approaching the gates and in his distraction, he misses clean. "We got more on the way! Let's clear a path n' push this fight to the gates!"
Letting the others deal with the orcs on their side of the barricade, Kraygan steps forward and hacks at the bombardier.

@GM: these orcs all have ferocity, which means they can continue fighting after going negative hp, but if they are negative aren't they staggered and reduced to a move or standard action? It might make a difference for the green orc. And maybe the bombardier after Kraygan's attack.
GM Tyranius |
@Wren-Yes I did miss adding the damage on the tracker. That does kill the red orc. Thanks.
@Kraygan- Yes they all have ferocity so when they get to the negatives become staggered for either a move or standard action. green is close but not quite there and the bombadier has a bit more Hp than the normal orc in this.
@Kraygan- I swapped it a small bit to your benefit and what the intentions are for initiative attacks.
Haggis rams the blue orc, impaling it's writhing body on the barricade as Wren tumbles over the barricade with ease. His muscles react to years of memory long ago.
Wren fires an arrow into the Bombadier's shoulder.
Kraygan sees an opening as the green orc climbs over the barricade but misses his opportunity as he chooses to instead strike the bombadier. Kraygan lands a large axe into the orc staggering it.

Vanderhoff looks at the lit, egg-shaped object on the ground, not sure if it is danger, or a dud. Shrugging, he looks forward at the bomber. What do you think, GM? What's the DC to recognize that the grenade is potentially dangerous?
GM Tyranius |
@ Van- I would say you know what an explosive looks like. :)
As the green orc moves over the barricade Vanderhoff smashes his hammer into it's head. The orc's head becomes skewered on a pointy edge of the blockade. That also negates the 10 damage

"Thanks cousin!" Kraygan salutes Torgan. Observing the ram-toting squad of orcs at the gate, he calls to Omaust. "Omaust, how 'bout ye return that bomb to em before it blows yer foot off! Then clear out, cause I aim to Rock'n'Roll! Er... I mean roll this rock." Stomping back to the boulder, he calls for his yak. "Haggis! Khuz!"
Once it has joined him, he directs it to help push the boulder.
@GM: what's needed for this? Also, will the boulder go through the barricade and continue on into the orcs? Or should I wait until they smash it down with the ram?
GM Tyranius |
@Kraygan- The boulder takes a DC 13 str check to get it moving. Once moving it travels in a straight 10 foot wide path through any barricades until it strikes a wall. You can roll the boulder at any angle. The boulder does 3d6 damage and whatever it strikes has chance of being knocked prone from the damage.
Torgan heals Kraygan's wounds with the baton wand. Quickly Kraygan and Haggis rush to the boulder and line up their trajectory while Wren moves to the log pile, ready to let it loose.
Hearing Kraygan Omast grabs the grenade and rolls it in between the goblins as he moves to the side out of the boulders direction.
Turning his head slightly Wren sees the man that ran off for help earlier. It looks as if he has return with a little assistance along the tower's battlements. The men rush towards the portcullis with weapons and tools.

Arrow added to map to indicate boulder's path.
Jorgan Steelkeg |
Everyone is getting Jorgan and Torgan confused! I healed Kraygan already this round but I don't think Torgan has done anything yet. How cruel of us to pick such similar names. It's almost like we planned it.
Tyranius |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
@Jorgan- Names are so close hehe
@Kraygan- It won't destroy the portcullis. Both portcullis are already broken but looks as if the assistance up top is going to work on getting one working with tools. You are free to use the boulder without harm though.
With Haggis' assistance the boulder begins to roll down the hill. Slowly at first and quickly picking up momentum. The boulder smashes through the barricade turning a 10 foot portion of it into splinters.
Continuing down the hill the boulder slams into the majority of the orcs and smashes a large portion of the battering ram into the ground.

Kraygan Steelkeg |
"HaHAH!!" Kraygan cheers as the boulder runs down half of the orcs at the gate.
"Folgrit's Great T!T$!!" He shouts in surprise when the bomb explodes with a lot more force that he expected.
As the remaining orcs struggle to rally, he commands his injured steed to stay behind him as he lumbers forth, stepping through the broken barricade and pulling a javelin from the harness on his back. Eying the closest Orc, he throws.
Though the weapon is nearly the size of a ballista bolt in his enlarged hands, it shrinks down to normal size as it sails through the air.

While the others heal, Wren moves from orc to orc, firing arrow into heart or head, making sure that each orc is not just mostly dead, but all the way dead, a much more interesting and satisfactory condition in the elf's mind.
When that is done, and if he still has time, he will search the orc bodies (especially the grenader) for loot and interesting goodies (alchemical or gold).
Jorgan Steelkeg |
We do have a second partially charged wand; I think Wren has it (maybe?). But the new wand that we bought is down to 19 charges.
"Damn thing's getting low on magic," Jorgan grumbles, looking down at the wand. "There more orcs coming? Who's still hurt?"
Roll if you need heals. I'll track charges.
GM Tyranius |
The orc's bodies don't yield much for supplies. Though the Grenadier's body does have 6 alchemist's fires and a Tanglefoot bag in it's pack.
Wren walks in looking for food...real food. He places the wand down amongst the dwarves.
"Here, take this...it will do me little good. It will heal minor wounds," Wren mentions. 8 charges, CLW. Activation phrase is "QUAR da-LANG-gee."
Wren stiffly takes a chair and stretches out his aching legs. Yesterday's exertions were the most his long legs had done in a while.
"Where to today?"
Wren handed the wand to the dwarves. Whomever wants to take it is fine.
Seeing now that the portcullis is blocked it looks like the only way across is through the rubble of a fallen tower that was destroyed by a large boulder.
The impressive tower once connected Trunau's western iner wall to the side of Bloodmarch Hill, but smoldering wreckage is all that remains of the fallen tower. Climb check to cross
A body of an acolyte from the Sanctuary lies dead in the rubble, bristled with orc javelins.
Torgan Steelkeg |
Torgan recovers his maulaxe before looking around the area and seeing the way to the last beacon through the tower. "Let's recover, then head through tha' broken tower."
Take 20 on Climb for a 22
Torgan will carefully try to climb the tower, taking his time to move and test each foothold.
Once on the other side, he looks around and sees a Sanctuary acolyte impaled on javelins. "Bloody hell..."
Take 10 on Perception for a 19
A glint in the man's hand catches his eye. "Luck might not be wit'im, but it sure is shinin' on us." He picks up the new, slightly used wand of Cure Light Wounds and stows it in his side pouch.
Vanderhoff has a wand with 8 charges; Jorgan has the 19 charge wand and Torgan has the 15 (now 12) charge wand.

The group has now left the inner quarter. The final beacon at the Hopespring is finally within reach. Trunau's lower quarter is surprisingly peaceful for now, as most attackers have already passed through, though the sounds of battle still rage throughout the town.
The Woodpile to the beacon still looks to be intact and ready to be set alight.

Torgan will investigate it and hope that he knows something from his brewing experience.

Wren. |
Wren nods, not eager to come along for more fighting. He is tired, old tired and right now tired. He feels the exertions of the day up and down his legs, through his back, and all over his aching muscles.
"There more orcs coming? Who's still hurt?"
Wren nods, waving off healing. "I am fine. It will just be my time soon. Let's go and die gloriously."

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13 Perception
Though not immediately seeing the green stuff, he does take a look at it when Torgan points it out.
"That's interesting," Wren grunts.
Wren knocks his bow and moves to keep watch, trying to take long potshots at any orcs he sees.
Kraygan Steelkeg |
Kraygan returns to normal size a few seconds after the last orc falls. "Hmmph. Hoped that would last longer."

2 charges from CLW on Haggis: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 6) + 2 = 15
After recovering his lance and accepting healing for his and Haggis' wounds, Kraygan joins Wren in the time-honored tradition practiced by many soldiers - offering the enemy a swift merciful death. And checking their pouches for loose change. Claiming a pair of alchemist fires, he smiles and holds them up. "I'll take these."
As he stows the alchemical weapons away, Kraygan looks out over the city in thought. "A force this big couldnae all been hidin in town. 'Specially not giants. Had ta stage up somewhere nearby." Looking to Wren, he adds, "Redlake Fort ain't too far. Could they 'ave come from there? Should probly get the militia to scout it when this is over."
Any chance we could get more details on that game at some point Pain? I think it might be cool if it could be incorporated into this campaign somehow. Also, did playing Wren at a higher level change any of your thoughts on his development in this game?

Kraygan's beard twitches at the discovery of the body and the wand it carried. "Anyone recognize this poor bastard?" He takes a moment to drag the body to a clear spot. "Deserves better than ta left facedown in rubble, and it could be his wand will keep some o' us breathin. Hoff, ye're a holy priest. Should we say anything?"
@GM: any trouble getting the yaks over the rubble?

Completely missing the strange substance on the beacon, Kraygan takes a sniff at it, and tries to rub some off with a gauntleted finger.

That actually is part of this adventure path Kraygan. It is in the next book. :)
@GM: any trouble getting the yaks over the rubble?
The Yaks shouldn't have trouble.
Kraygan Steelkeg |
That actually is part of this adventure path Kraygan. It is in the next book. :)
Oh! Ok, glad he didn't go into details then!
Vanderhoff Steelkeg |
Vanderhoff follows over the rubble, then pauses, squinting at the wood pile. "Any idea what it is, cousin?" He asks Torgan. "Poison? Like it was sabotaged, and when we light it, we'll poison the town? Someone seems to know much about the town's defenses."
Moving over to the acolyte's body, Van swears softly. "Poor bastard..." He then utters a prayer to Angraad, seeking relief for the soul.
Wren. |
Wren looks up, gazing over some far horizon in response to Kraygan.

Wren keeps his guard.
"Remove the poisoned ones and lets get it lit. I don't have enough arrows for the number of orcs around here," Wren grumps.
Kraygan Steelkeg |
"Poison? Dwarves eat that fer breakfast." Kraygan grabs a green log from the beacon and takes it a distance away from the others. "Ok, those with weak stomachs, stand back!"
Assuming no one stops him, he uses his flint and steel to spark the log.
GM Tyranius |
Removing one of the logs the green powder seems almost sticky. Kraygan takes it a distance away from the others and lights the log. The log erupts in a fiery green inferno singing Kraygan's beard.

Wren knows that Redford Lake was originally part of Harchrist's Blockade, the second line of strongholds defending Lastwall's retreating northern border with Belkzen. Redford Lake (named for the color of the algae) was abandoned in 4482 AR when the blockade fell and a new border, the Horde Line, was established further south. The fall of Redford Lake was more than just a military defeat, however, for in the face of an orc siege, the human garrison resorted to cannibalism.

"Argh!!" Kraygan leaps back from the flames, patting frantically at his beard. "That definitely ain't poison!"

"Interestin'... Wren, light one o' yer arrows an' launch it into th'bonfire. If e'eryone stays back, then we should be fine." Torgan advises.
If he balks, Torgan will light a torch off the green fire and throw it at the woodpile from like 50' away.

While Kraygan puts out his beard Torgan lights a torch from a safe distance and hurls it into the pile of wood. The pile lets loose the brightest plume of fire as it ignites. Luckily the group was far enough away from harm.
With the last beacon lit a large flaming boulder flies through the air slamming into the side of the Ramblehouse. Trunau will have little chance of turning this around if that catapult is left unchecked.
Looking over the wall it looks as if a small group of orcs are manning a light catapult near the Barterstones. They seem to be using the stones themselves as a large shield. N on the Town Map
