Run! Don't do it! Run, fast!
Just kidding. It's only been 3 years for me (although we've been together for 11) and I've got no regrets.
Farin Hogan, III |
I am going to be out for the next few days recovering from a surgery. I am unsure of the recovery time, but I hope to be back in a few days, a week at the latest. Please feel free to bot me while I am gone.
GM Tyranius |
No problem Xynen. We will cover down for you.
Jorgan Steelkeg |
Sorry for the unexpected disappearance, everyone!
As I mentioned before, my brother-in-law was a total ass about leaving the farm right before harvest and this past week I got really busy helping out on the farm in addition to teaching. Last weekend I put in 14+ hour days helping out and then had to get ready for teaching this week. Finally it rained yesterday and I was able to take a breath and get some sleep.
I'm only in three games but I just dropped out of another one so hopefully that will make it easier for me to keep up with you guys. I'm committed to sticking it out here, it just might be kind of rough until about Thanksgiving when we usually wrap up harvest.
Farin Hogan, III |
Sounds rough, Jorgan, but glad you got a day to rest! I am back, but not yet able to sleep for more than about an hour at a time, so if I type something really loopy, just bear with me please!
GM Tyranius |
Hehe Farin. Will do.
Welcome back Jorgan. Hopefully it all eases out for you soon. That sounds rough. Thanksgiving sounds fine.
I will be leaving on my 4-day pass here real soon to spend a last couple days with the family, though I should be able to post so no biggie there.
Really quick after that though I will be on an all day flight over the great pond and will need a day or so to build up a satellite dish to procure internet. I will be on 100% blackout with unusable phone and all so if I disappear for a short period don't be alarmed. I will be back and be able to really ramp up posting again at that point as I will have a bit more free time.
Tyranius |
I am beginning my flight overseas now. I am going far for 24-48 hours but will get Internet as soon as possible.
GM Tyranius |
Still not sure which direction you guys are wanting to head. Some were looking north while some were focused on taking out the western alcove.
Rogzul |
Jorgans post mentions the dragons that Wren and I heard, so I assumed he was coming north with us as well. Thought we'd agreed to leave the western alcove and hope for the best.
GM Tyranius |
That's what I thought to but wanted to make completely sure.
Jorgan Steelkeg |
We finished harvest this weekend so hopefully things will slow down now and I'll be a little better about keeping up. Sorry about my spotting posting for the past month or two!
GM Tyranius |
Anyone hear from Rogzul? He still on Holiday vacation?
Kraygan Steelkeg |
So it was said when Torgan left the party that Aggrimosh was returned to the group. I sort of assumed Kraygan was now carrying it, but I realize that was never confirmed. Is it with the party or back at the forge?
Jorgan Steelkeg |
*shrug*
I'm the worst when it comes to gear. It's probably my absolute least favorite aspect of Pathfinder....
GM Tyranius |
Sorry this discussion wasn't popping up as new for me. It was returned to the forge. Though you guys have been back since then so if someone needs / wants to use it you are more than welcome.
GM Tyranius |
I'm going to start passively recruiting for a replacement for Squats. This is tough in Book 5, but it can happen.
May as well call it Book 6. This is literally the last couple pages of Book 5.
Torgan Steelkeg |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
"Ye can't have me hammer!" Torgan yells as he grabs Aggrimosh and runs deeper into the forge.
GM Tyranius |
Haha! I just noticed you changed your tagline!
GM Tyranius |
We have a replacement for Rogzul that will be joining us soon to finish out this AP!

Wren. |
Hi folks, I'll be joining you for the last book - looking forward to this! I'm thinking about a versatile healer... should be ready to go in a day or so. Glad to be aboard!
I apologize in advance for butchering your character's name, role, and whatever else. Wren ain't right.
I feel sorry for Yaktender and miss ol' Squats (who's name we never learnt), let alone Jorhoff and Kraykeg.
Jorgan Steelkeg |
Let's just hope he's not another bloody elf. I think Wren is enough elf for the dwarves to handle already, lol.
Kraygan Steelkeg |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
We started this group with 1 elf, 4 dwarves, and 4 yaks. There are no toes left to step on. Play what you will have fun with.
I suggest an elven yakrider. Heh heh heh.
GM Tyranius |
:). Correct. We have 2 dwarves (w/ yak and ram), an elf, and a halfling.
Jorgan Steelkeg |
Well we started out with four dwarves riding yaks, a family running a brewery and using the yaks to haul their wares. But we lost a couple dwarves and Jorgan's ram was tragically killed around level 4-5 when we didn't have the means to bring him back. Luckily Gozreh sent Jorgan a ram as reward for his service.

So, I have found a couple of holes in this character during this level, and would like to start plugging them.
Biggest issue is combat - in order for me to make any impact, I need to full attack with sneak attacks. Anything less is just going to get me crushed, and my AC/HP isn't high enough to prevent this.
Now, if I turn invisible, I can get into position (or sometimes just stealth is enough), but that only allows 1 sneak, even if I wait until the next round.
Now, I can use feint to get my full attack, minus the first. So I don't really need to be hidden or have a flank buddy. But again, I have to be in position already for that too.
So it seems my biggest problem is mobility and survival for the response from getting in close.
My options appear to be these, but if anyone has a better suggestion, please let me know!
1. Add a rogue level, which does nothing for me except changing my 6d6 sneak to 7d6. Not bad, but only if I get full attacks...
2. Add a barbarian level, mainly for the +10 ft speed increase (although the added BAB, Fort save and HP are't bad)
3. I could add a 3rd level ranger and Infiltrator archtype, which fits in theme well, adds BAB, Endurance and I can either choose +2 natural armor or lunge (not sure this adds much vs giants, though).
4. Add unlettered arcanist, which has a neat 10ft insta-jump and could get a familiar for flanking and a small bonus, but it seems cheesy, and not even sure it buys me much.
5. Add a fighter level if an extra feat helps me in any way. (plus I am getting a feat for level 15).
6. Add a summoner level, which provides many more flanking buddies. Doesn't completely solve the problem, but could summon buddies and then move, and hope that the next round everyone is still in place.
7. Add a hunter level and get an animal companion mount. Might use boon companion to keep it alive and later make it into a pack flanking buddy.
Or maybe I just buy a Wand of Mount, and ride the beast invisibly, jump off, then turn visible, feint, and then attack. (Geesh! what a set up...)
Anyone have an idea? I have spent so much time looking at options, I can't see straight now...

Isn't there some sort of rogue talent that lets you get sneak if you move 10'? Or maybe that's an archetype.
Or I could convert you to the faith of Desna and you could gain the travel domain to get a little bit of dimensional hopping...
Kraygan Steelkeg |
Farin, I think the Gang Up feat could solve many of your concerns. Ride in to combat with Kraygan and you will always have two allies to get flanking. Also, don’t forget to use combat expertise - it might make the difference between getting hit or missed once all your sneak attack deliberating strikes kick in.
Regarding classes, you are getting close to spell access for ranger. Longstrider could help with speed.
Farin Hogan, III |
Thanks, all! Some great suggestions - didn't even think cleric, but it could work.
Ultimately, though, longstrider was the key. As a hunter, I could get it now and an AC mount. But as a ranger, I can just get a wand for it too, and go. Also, neither option excludes adding barbarian later.
Ultimately, though, I think Kraygan hit the key point on what I need - the ability to boost my AC and survive that first round. So for that, I choose the infiltrator ranger (which I also think is the best fit conceptually for the character anyway), take the +2 natural AC bonus, and then next level gain spells and an animal companion anyway.
Also, I really need to remember the +2 favored enemy bonus vs these giants - somehow, I keep forgetting to add it in!
So here is my update:
+1 level ranger (infiltrator: giants)
+2 natural AC (30 minutes per day in 10 minute increments)
+1 BAB
+1 Will Save
Added Feats: Endurance, Extra Rogue Talent (Light Walker)
7 skill points: +1 Bluff, +1 Perception, +1 UMD, +1 Disable Device, +3 Handle Animal
It also appears that I added my last level without fully using the features gained. My BAB was high enough for a 3rd attack, and I should have added a Rogue Talent, so I added Ledge Walker.

All sounds good to me Farin :)
