Erianna presses forward, and attacks the one next to whom they think is the leader.

I don't think I can reach the leader.

Bump?

Erianna and Ryoken move in from one side while Mwenye comes from the other side in a 2 pronged maneuver. The leader is only slightly wounded by Ryoken and only Jaska's 3rd arrow hits. "Go! Go! I will hold them off." The leader tells to those around her as they hurry down the ladder. The man next to Mwenye tries to escape his deadly fists AoO and climb down the ladder.

The leader wields her longsword and with anger in her eyes swings it through Ryoken and Erianna but fails to hit either. "So the reports were right. You are the ones that took down my sister for bounty. Fools whose only motivation is money. You might kill me, but my people know what's at stake and they will continue our vision."

Mwenye watches the other bandits go.

"Leaderless, I doubt they will be as great a threat to commerce here. We should bind this one's wounds and take our prisoners to justice."

He looks down at the leader. "If she lives, perhaps she can explain where this dragon came from."

Seeing that his companions didn't seem interested in pursuing the fleeing ones and had already made sure that the leader would not bleed out if she hadn't already been slain, Ryoken crouches down to keep a look out between the different tunnels. "I take it we question her if she yet lives and then continue looking around if she does not? If she lives, we may want to put her with our other bound 'friends'."

Ryoken considers posing his own questions to the woman. "So, there is a second head?" Jaska leans closer to the leader of the bandit. "If you don't want us to hunt her down too, you better start offering some information. I'm not in it for the money, I'm here to protect the defenless and innocent villagers from bandits."

"We take what we need to survive and those who saw the need to act joined us. Taldor has failed us. All they care about is protecting their road, their trade and their wealth. I was like you once, I came for adventure, but the reality is far worse. The farms and communities here are helpless. Taldor does as little to help as they can under the guise of not increasing tensions with Qaldira. They don't take the rumors seriously and blame us for the burning and destruction. But we are some of the only ones fighting back." She looks at Jaska, "You don't need to protect the people from bandits. There are but a few who truly deserve that name and none that I would accept into my company. What the people really need is protection from the evils that spill from..." she pauses to cough up a little blood. "Rappan Athuk."

Nice link. XD

"That is our eventual goal," Mwenye says, frowning. "And what of the dragon? How came it to be here in your lair?"

"I see. The dragon was a surprise when we thought we had found a secret chamber. Now most of us are dead." She doesn't seem to want to give you much information. "You captured my sister and turned her in, or so I heard from one who escaped. How can you say you are not simple bounty hunters?"

"Until we were attacked by bandits along the road, we were traveling here because of the stories of dark things stirring within Rappan Athuk," Mwenye replies. "After being attacked, we inquired at the next guard post about troubles the area suffered, for it seemed the region must be troubled if bandits would attack a well-armed party of adventurers. It was there we learned not only of your band but also the other dangers in this region, and decided to hone our skills upon such lesser dangers before facing the darkness below."

He folds his arms and growls thoughtfully. "Now the kobolds will be much worse with a dragon behind them, but that dragon is beyond our current strength. Perhaps it is time for us to brave the deeps--if we survive, no doubt we will gain the skills we shall need to slay it."

For some unknown reason, I was expecting to see something like this from the link.

"Or perhaps it is best to strike at the kobolds before they have time to rally behind the dragon. But the real question is what will cause more damage in the short run- the evils we have heard tales of here or the Rappan Athuk attracting more evils. Whichever one we face, the other will continue to affect those nearby while we deal with it."

"The kobold beasts. We planned to move on them soon. They are in our way as we move south towards the river. Closer to our goal. I don't have the numbers now thanks to that dragon. I need to rescue my sister. If you let me go I will forget the trouble you have caused us. If you turn me in I will remember this if we meet again."

Behind his somen, Ryoken rolled his eyes. Words were cheap and bluster was easy. They should have just killed her when they had a chance; she hadn't provided them with any useful information, and she was starting to get on his nerves. Really, if she had any shred of decency, she would ask for a knife to reclaim her honor with. It would certainly make their lives easier. He was tempted to send her to jigoku himself, but now that she was in their custody, he suspected the local law would consider that murder.

He keeps these thoughts to himself though, opting to simply say, "Your feeble threats reflect poorly upon yourself."

"Whatever your reasons, you have broken the law, and we cannot lawfully set you at liberty," Mwenye states, scowling at her. "If we survive what lurks in Rappan Athuk, we shall have no reason to fear your threats... nor shall we if we do not, though for worse reasons."

He looks at the others. "The kobolds we can face, but the dragon we cannot as we presently are. Still, they will no doubt be emboldened by what it seems is the return of their master."

He pauses a moment. "Perhaps we should investigate the chamber in which it slept. It must have somehow been held there, else it would have been free before. There may yet remain some clue as to how the dragon can be bound again."

"Agreed Mwenye, let us investigate the dragon chamber" - Erianna nods - "We bring..." - she begins, then turns to the woman - "I am Erianna, what is your name?"

"Bugjuice. And see that you remember it for next time." She says.

Taking your new prisoner with you(?) you head back up towards the rubble filled tunnel where she says the dragon came from. "We were excavating this part as it looked like an old cave-in. Maybe it was. But instead of kobold treasure we found a trapped, sleeping dragon. Before we could refill the tunnel, someone woke it up and we all payed." She seems sad for the loss of the lives of the men.

I have also removed the fog for the caves since you have no more hostiles and can explore the whole thing if you wanted. Unfortunately the bandits don't have much gold and only basic food, armour and weapons. If you could convince the guards that you eliminated so many bandits, such a haul of evidence could be worth much more than selling value.

Mwenye would vote that we take Bugjuice's gear, but don't bother with most of the rest. Perhaps take the shortswords.

Cautiously Mwenye goes to investigate, trusting at least one of the others will stay to watch their prisoner.

As Mwenye moves off to investigate the cave, Erianna addresses the woman again - "Bugjuice, right?" - she nods - "Explain me again if you will, how Taldor has failed you? What exactly do you do for the farms and communities in the region? What 'exactly' is going on?"

"Do you not listen? They do not take the threat of Rappan Athuk seriously and do not protect these parts adequately so that those living in them may live in peace. They only care about their precious trade routes. If it wasn't for my sister and I things would be much worse. We only take what we need to survive. I used to be an adventurer like you... but Rappan Athuk cannot be defeated by a group of tomb raiders. It might take an army, but I do what I can."

Mwenye finds the tunnel filled with rubble from the dragon's escape. If anything is down there it will take some time to excavate it again. "It took us a couple days to get to it. And we had dozens of hands."

Ryoken blinks at the woman's name. Surely he had misheard? Or, perhaps more likely, it was just his poor grasp of common making him misunderstand it. He supposed it didn't really matter. They would turn her in, and it was likely they'd never see her again. Or if they did, they would have better things to deal with than remembering her name.

"It appears there is not much left down here. It would seem it is time to move on and head back? From there we can decide next steps; if we are to try to hit the kobolds before they organize or continue our journey to the Rappan Athuk."

"An army would not fit in tunnels like these," Mwenye comments, as he frowns at the rubble. "And if there are foes within Rappan Athuk there like this dragon, they would die uselessly before them. A small group of skilled and powerful individuals is the only hope to destroy the darkness beneath. Nor have you provided sufficient reason for why, if your men take only what they need to survive, they would be so foolish as to attack us unprovoked."

He turns and nods at Ryoken. "Yes, there is nothing more to be gained here. Were it not for the dragon, I would certainly say the kobolds. As it is... I am not certain. Perhaps we would have more luck beginning our assault upon Rappan Athuk."

The captured woman does not seem to want to justify or excuse the actions of those who attacked you.

You have wounded Dart waiting outside and you left the kobold cook Zzarok outside too. What do you intend to do next? Go after kobolds to the south? The giant spiders further southeast? Take the captured bandits to the guard post? Rappan Athuk?

"You certainly do not need to make your case with us" - Erianna nods - "I was merely trying to understand if your reasons were honest or not. I am not satisfied with your justification of taking only what you need to survive... How can you guarantee those you take from do not need it?" - the woman half asks, half ponders out loud.

"But rest assured I will ask more details about this from the authorities" - she adds, then turning to Ryoken and Mwenye - "Agreed. Let us get out of here"

With Bugjuice and the 2 you knocked unconscious as well as the 6 you captured before, you finally leave the caves and feel the sunlight again. Dart and Zzarok wait some distance away, hiding in case the dragon decided to come back. They are fine and have seen nothing, only the fleeing bandits head somewhere north, away from your direction of travel. Nursing his wounds from the previous chase here, Dart doesn't seem himself.

At this rate of travel you will return to the checkpoint in 3 days. The bandits don't make too much trouble, Bugjuice seems defiant.

It's on the second day that things turn ugly. The camp is set, a fire prepares food for everyone as the sun sets, mostly overseen by Zzarok the cook. He still complains of not having the right meat and several times suggests your prisoners would be a great ingredient in the meals and wonders why you feed them at all.

Only Ryoken hears the chitter and the unnatural sounds outside of the light of the campfire.

[b]Ryoken can act in the surprise round. None of you know which direction or what's out there but he knows there is 'something'.

The first day, shortly before retreating in to his little rope trick hut for the night, Ryoken spent his remaining energy healing his companions, including Dart. He wasn't sure what had come over the man, once such a braggart. Had his words been all lies and false bravado? Had his first real taste of battle scarred him beyond what his magic could heal? Some men were as such.

As they continued on their journey, he idly wondered how long their new companion planned on following them for. It was unclear if she were merely trying to help escort dangerous criminals back or if she planned to stick with them further. After all, given their final destination, not many would choose to make themselves companions to such a group. Though if rumors were true, they could certainly use all the help they could get. Though most likely it would make no difference other than to add to the Rappan Athuk's body count.

As they made camp later that night, Ryoken rolled his eyes at their cook. Did he not realize how...unclean it would be to eat their prisoners? Perhaps it wouldn't be as bad for him since he was a ryuu-ko, and dragons were already known for eating mortals foolish enough to anger them. But a human eating another human simply wouldn't do.

He stiffens as he hears the chittering. It sounded...insectoid perhaps? Though it was unclear if that implied they were merely dumb creatures acting out of instinct or if they had some higher intelligence behind them. Just in case they were of the latter variety, he called out, "Unless you wish an honorable death, I suggest you leave us in peace."

He held out his hand and began tracing a symbol in the air. "鉛" At his side, his twin blades grew heavy preparing to slam heavily in to whatever was out in the dark.

Casting lead blades

6 Spiders descend on thick strands of web from the trees above you, surrounding the camp and attacking with large fangs. The bandits cry out, unarmed, tied up and unable to defend themselves as 3 of them are feasted upon. The other 3 attack you and Dart gets hit though he is not poisoned. Bugjuice yells out at the spiders feasting on her men and in a superhuman feat of strength breaks the ropes holding her and charges at one of the spiders with her bare hands.

Well, ok, he was wrong about the insect part. Though in his defense, it's not like Ryoken generally spent much time around giant bugs or spiders to be able to tell their sounds apart.

Ah, okay, then my mage armor would still have been active. I misunderstood.

Seeing Ryoken aim to guard the prisoners, Mwenye whirls and aims a devastating kick at the nearest spider.

"How did these get so close to us without being seen..." Upset that she can't use her bow, Jaska draw her battleaxe and start hacking at the spider in front of her. The blade flashes in the air as it circles to bite into the creature. With the attack done, Jaska uses the momentum to shift her position to stand behind Bugjuice. She feels uneasy to turn her back on the bandit, but she also needs to protect the prisoner under her watch.

Ryoken evades the spiders attacks as he repositions closer to the helpless prisoners but does not land a good hit. The spider behind him sinks fangs into a gap in Ryoken's armour(13 damage and poisoned - Fort DC 17[cure = 2 saves] or 1d3/round for 6 rounds and staggered)

Mwenye uses his fists and feet to hurt the spider that attacked Dart but it fights off the stun.

Jaska and Erianna cut into the spider near them and it rears up into the air in protest before coming down and sinking its fangs in Jaska(12 damage and poisoned - Fort DC 17[cure = 2 saves] or 1d3/round for 6 rounds and staggered)

Bugjuice punches the spider and tries to catch its attention away from the still tied up bandits.

Ryoken grimaces as he feels the spider's fangs sink in to him. The wound burns slightly but quickly fades as his body manages to fight off the toxin. He edges slightly away from the spider behind him, drawing his second blade as he continues to lash out at the spider closest to their prisoners. However, at just the wrong moment, the venom briefly resurges, causing him to miss the creature.

Feeling the spider teeth sink into her flesh, Jaska fights the poison coursing through her veins. Calling out for some divine help, Jaska continues to hack at the giant vermin. Looking over her shoulder, she tries to evaluate Bugjuice's situation.

Jaska should be between the spider and Bugjuice.

"Let us send them back scurrying to their dark holes" - Erianna roars, her movement bolstered by the Dawnflower spirit.

Starting Battle Dance, and wading into Crane Style, moving to stand between Zzarok and Spider 4.

"Go stand behind Mwenye" - she urges the kobold.

Bugjuice is still very low hitpoints from your fight with her.
Jaska wounds one enough that it scurries away into the trees leaving a trail of dark dripping blood. Mwenye continues to defend Dart with his fists and Erianna protects Zzarok while Ryoken is flanked and another bite inflicted(10 damage and poisoned [previous save doesn't count] - Fort DC 19[cure = 2 saves] or 1/round for 6 rounds 1d3 Con damage and staggered). Bugjuice keeps hitting the spider and avoiding its bite so far.

Jaska feels the poison leaving her system as she drops her axe. Shifting her position again, she draws her bow and start sending arrows in the spider fighting Bugjuice. "Need to kill those faster" She doesn't speak to anyone in particular, but it feels more like she isn't happy about having been caught unprepared.

I don't understand what that's saying. It seems like from that + the increase in save DC that I was affected by the first poison attack? But my understanding from this Paizo FAQ post is that if I make the initial save, I was never poisoned to begin with and the [cure = 2 saves] only applies if I fail my initial save/was affected by the poison. Or am I misunderstanding what is going on?

Relevant paragraph if needed:
Poisons fall under the category of afflictions. They each have a save, a frequency, an effect, and a cure. At the most simple level, this means that when a character comes into contact with the poison, she gets a save. If the save succeeds, the poison has no effect, regardless of the cure entry. If the saving throw is failed, the character takes the effect and must continue to makes saves, dictated by the frequency, or continue to take the effect with each failed save. The only way to be free of the poison at this point is to meet the conditions of the cure entry, usually one or more successful saving throws (usually consecutively if more than one).

Yep I was wrong. Fort DC 17 then.
