Aren't you supposed to be studying for finals?

Bjorkus already didn't trust the Aestherics. Krokar was the one 'straight man' who Bjorkus thought might back him up. That's not the case anymore.

I'm not upset. I'm just disappointed and a bit lost now. I started the world tour assuming the Akropash bubble would wrap up with something to help Bjorkus get his confidence back. Beating up Raul as some kind of public spectacle seemed like a easy out. It's looking like that's not an option now. I may have to do a bit of retconning in the future encounters.

Toramin Gearsmith wrote:

Well, Bjorkus is all like I want to feel like I did something. And Krokar is all results matter -- individual effort are part of a group whole. Then Bjorkus is like that doesn't make me feel better; I'm more than a PR opportunity!

None of which addresses the real cause of Bjorkus internal struggle: the disconnect between being a small fish in a bigger pond coupled with psyche scarring torture.

Though I'm sure Feral will disagree, I've always seen Bjorkus as something of a diva. Now, in the wake of trauma he is looking for meaning in his travails and a re-centering of self-worth.

Yes. Someone get the minotaur a Snickers.

Yes, it's simplified, but that's part of what I'm saying. The group will be achieving goals, not individuals. I suppose my perspective is that what you do only matters with how the results are. If somebody lifted up an 800 pound rock in the middle of nowhere, I would say "Wow, that's impressive." If somebody lifted up a 500 pound gate to let a hundred trapped people escape, I would say "What a hero, what a great person!"

Frankly, you are a small fish right now. You're getting bigger, but in the grand scheme of things there are a lot of bigger people out there. By the end of the campaign you'll be level 20 and fighting near-demigod level odds, but you're not there yet.

As far as beating up Raul goes, that's just not how the world works. Any world, as far as I can see it. If somebody surrenders themselves for their crimes, you can't just go and beat them up because you feel like it. Not in a legitimate organization that's not evil anyways.

It's actually a super common trope in cop shows/movies.

Just a few ideas along that line:

*Raul could escape just as Bjorkus is going to visit him. They share some words. They fight. Bjorkus drags him back to his jailers. Much fun is had.

*The Aestherics decide on trial by combat with Bjorkus representing the people! They share words. They fight. Much fun is had.

*The Aestherics agree to look the other way so the two can fight. Seems legit if it's between two consenting parties. Much fun is had.

*Krokar puts Bjorkus in charge of watching Raul at some point (knowing Raul will try to escape). Later, he tries to escape! They fight. Much fun is had.

Well maybe right when they surrender, but he's been locked up for a week. After helping you too.

Of the four, only looking the other way for a bit is realistic. Partly because Raul isn't actually going to try to escape, partly because the Aestherics don't believe in trial by combat. If you had gone to visit Raul in his cell and had a word with the guard, probably a good chance. But out in public, where dozens could attest to the failing of the guard? They weren't willing to risk getting in that kind of trouble.

It's only unrealistic because you deem it so. It could happen.

Maybe the people of Akropash would like to see their tormentor brought down before their own eyes.

Yes, because I deem it so. I have a strongly logical mind and I know how NPCs are going to act in my world because I created them. If you want the story to go exactly how you think it should go, write a book.

Some definitely would, but word is already spreading about how he helped when push came to shove.

Okay. They were just ideas.

Please understand, I take no pleasure in saying no to your ideas. I badly want to make sure you start enjoying the game again. It's just that you keep asking for things to happen that make no logical sense. I want you to have fun, but I won't compromise how my NPCs act or how my world works to do it.

Bjorkus, at some point you came up with a list of a dozen of your crew mates, correct? I forgot to favorite or copy the list, could you list them again for me?

Yeah I have a week off. Finals went pretty well, wasn't really a hard test between them.

Poor Bjorkus. Such a manly man, but needs some gentle help. Wants to be the person to kill the bosses, but over half his class levels are support.

He needs a support group. =P

To be fair he's never said anything about 'being the one to kill the bosses'. I'm not sure where that came from. He's struggling because he had no part in any of the actual big battles.

Did you happen to catch the Agent Carter mini series that just wrapped up? There was a character in that with a similar element to his 'tragic past'.

Well the first fight I couldn't help. That was a party decision to attack while you were at your weakest.

The second fight you chose to ran after suicidally running in, not much I could do about that either.

I have not even heard of that series.

Male Grizzly Bear 3 | HP: 30/30 l AC: 19 /T: 12/FF: 17 l Fort: +4, Ref: +5, W: +4 l Init: +2 l Per: +5; Low-light vision; Scent l Movement: 40

Eh, I'd rather not rehash old arguments. There's always something you can do, you're the DM! But let's not go there.

Agent Carter was a miniseries on ABC based on Agent Peggy Carter (Captain America's love interest from the first movie).

I'm loving the pep talks from the NPCs but nothing's going to give Bjorkus his confidence back other that fight he's after (whatever it may be) or maybe some form of divine intervention. Also, isn't it way past your bedtime by now? I'm getting ready to go to bed myself.

I mean I could have had both enemies completely ignore the only person within range and just skip a turn. Doesn't make a lot of sense though.

Well, sorry. Sometimes you have to suck it up and learn to live with yourself. Or go single handed charge one of the other slaver princes and get yourself killed. Either way, I've spent more than enough time trying to play therapist for Bjorkus. I like character development, but I'm not going to change the way reality works just to have Bjorkus beat up some meaningless mook that I never had planned and could be just as easily taken care of by the high leveled NPCs in the area.

Yes, we have established that it is late. Insomnia. It's a b+@+~.

Could you link me the day 7 bubble you referred to, Omen? As I wasn't that advanced myself in that timeline yet, I'd been intentionally avoiding them.

Rilka was not adjacent to you. Plus since you were carrying Dalton it seems unlikely you would have had a weapon drawn.

I think she has a good chance. We just need to overwhelm the one that has you in its mouth before it finishes the job. So we need Bjorkus to rage and use that extremely impressive strength score to good use.

Between full attacks and AoOs if it tries to leave with her Toramin and Viktor should be able to bring that one down. I'm afraid Bjorkus isn't going to be much help.

So Bjorkus sees Rilka get nearly instantly killed and his decision is that he's not going to do anything because he thinks he isn't going to be much help?

Bjorkus cares for Rilka like a sibling but all the strength in the world doesn't matter if you lack the will to use it. He wants to help but he's still really shaken by the events in Akropash. In his mind these things are just large furry four-legged Targs all over again.

Maybe he should find one of those magic feathers Dumbo's been using.

Actually, Omen, would the pilfering hand spell work on Rilka?

I know objectifying women is sometimes seen as a negative, but here ... ;)

Well I suppose I can only do so much about character depression. I hope it doesn't cost Rilka's life.

As soon as he said "I'm picking characters based on their comic potential" I dropped out. He already was showing some issues with consistency and responding to people, so as soon as he said that was his main deciding factor in character selection I decided I probably wasn't going to have fun in his game.

Yeah, I found that line to be troubling myself...

Dalton, while that is a very ingenious way to use the spell, there are two main problems. One, as you refer to, Rilka is not an "object". Beyond the flavor of the spell the mechanics of it say the target of the spell has to be "one object". In addition to that the abrupt version of the spell can only be to disarm or steal (which I could be convinced of since Rilka is unconscious), but my main issue with that is that women are, in fact, not objects ;)

Yeah I was sad about that, because I actually got a barbarian/paladin/sentinel to come together really well with the large bastard sword build.

Male Grizzly Bear 3 | HP: 30/30 l AC: 19 /T: 12/FF: 17 l Fort: +4, Ref: +5, W: +4 l Init: +2 l Per: +5; Low-light vision; Scent l Movement: 40

Well if your big concern is just not getting picked I wouldn't worry too much. You had a strong application and there weren't a ton of characters applying.

Bjorkus may or may not find the will to fight here depending on how Dalton's spell affects these things.

Your spell focus feats made the second lion fail his save, well done Dalton.

It's not that I was concerned about being able to get picked. When I put my mind to it I put together extremely strong characters. There was recently a Giantslayer recruitment with almost 50 applicants, and I was the first pick after friends of the DM were selected.

It's just that I didn't think I was going to enjoy the DM's style. I've played with him before and enjoyed doing so, but from what I could tell of his posts and style I just wouldn't enjoy myself in his game. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I would have a lot of fun. I know I've certainly made the wrong call the other direction before, where I got into a game and found it borderline saddening after a week. Still, I ended up putting together a very serious character with a dark past, definitely not the comic kind of character he is looking for.

I'm going out to dinner with my family and then I have local game night, so I may be AFK for the rest of the night.

So you're back on board for LoF? What changed your mind?

Messaged the DM, asked some questions. Got a few things cleared up.

Does anybody else have any NPCs they want to talk to at the celebration that Bjorkus arranged? If not I can move on to the rest of the Akropash bubble after Dalton finishes his bit.

Bjorkus has some things to take care of once the celebration is wound down for the night.

Feel free to move onto that point. Since I'm giving you a safety net of "Nothing is going to kill for these 2 weeks", staying chronological isn't a top priority.

Rilka is dancing and playing games at the festival. There’s really not a need to RP that at this point. Oh yeah, she also pays attention to the musicians, looking for potential candidates to make songs about Ares/Bjorkus, the downfall of Targ, etc.
