Phew.

Now thats a scary thought. He'd need the sword of Grayskull to pull it off.

So where do they find people who look like Cimmerians these days?

The WWE and the old steroid users home.

It would not be hard to find a professional athlete that looks like this. Now whether they can act or not is a different story.

Not like acting ability has ever been a requirement to be in a movie.

[cough] Kevin Costner. [cough]

Besides, Wrastlin' is acting.

What's funny is that many wrestlers are better actors than the guys in Hollywood.

It would be a lot simpler (and more productive, in my view) if they went with the physical descriptions of him in the REH stories. The last time I read one was a couple of years ago, but in the original material he wasn't a hulking freak ( likely with corresponding tiny steroid-balls as a side effect that should steer you clear of them), but rather a guy in really good shape. Big, but probably capable of touching the top of his head or what have you.

From what I remember reading, though, they're sticking to the version people are more familiar with, and maybe the film version of his origin as well, so that would preclude running around the hills and mountains of Cimmeria all of his youth like a Highlander or something. Instead he's just got the big millwheel to focus on:)

If I remember correctly, the REH stories do describe him as being blond. Which would be pretty shocking to today's moviegoers...

Jason Momoa is the new Conan the Cimmerian. Conan (2011) is the upcoming Marcus Nispel directed rebirth of the original Robert E. Howard character. Mickey Rourke has also been announced to play Conan’s father Corin.

[ CONAN ]
He’s in his 20s to early 30s, Caucasian, powerfully built, broad-shouldered, sun brownedskin lined with scars. Piercing blue eyes and square-cut black mane, tall. He is a savage killer that has matured into the refinement his father tried to teach him when he was young. Conan is very smart, almost inhumanly strong, and very cunning. His entire life, from the moment of his birth, has been shaped by violence. Being the last of his tribe and having to watch his father die a cruel death, he is determined avenge his peoples’ slaughter by killing all those who led the attack on the Cimmerians, including the all-powerful Khalar Singh. He is prepared to die in order to accomplish his goal. What Conan did not expect, was to find a reason to live… LEAD

[ TAMARA ]
She is 18 to 24 years old, Caucasian or Middle Eastern, open to all ethnicities; beautiful, studious, correct, a novitiate of a Greek influenced monastery. A master of martial arts, she has been trained to be the Queen’s servant, bodyguard and best friend. She and many other female bodyguards to the queen have been in hiding most of their lives because of the curse of Acheron, which would take the queen’s life to bring almost immortal power to its king. When Khalar Singh, a powerful warlord with ambitions to become the king of Acheron, storms the monastery and captures all of the novitiates, she is separated from Ilira, the one she must protect. With all of her strength and will, Tamara is determined to find and rescue her. She finds herself in league with Conan because of a mutual need to find Khalar Singh. She is not in the least intimidated by Conan’s size or grim demeanor and their alliance eventually blossoms into something that surprises them both… LEAD

[ KHALAR SINGH ]
He’s in his 40s to 50s, Asian or Middle Eastern, Central Asian, Mongol, Turkish, or Persian, open to all ethnicities; commanding in size and manner, a warlord and formidable warrior, brilliant, cruel, weathered and tanned by the many campaigns he has waged and won. He is driven in his quest to find the Queen of Acheron and has been building an empire to do so. His goal is to find the Queen whose blood will bring life to the demonic minions of Acheron while making himself king of this hellish power. With this power, Khalar will protect his legacy against the onslaught of master sorcerer, Thoth-Amon so that his weak son, Fariq may rule after his death. While riding into a Cimmerian village to recruit his old comrade, Corin, his large collection of mercenaries slaughters them to the last soul when Corin refuses to join them. The village’s only survivor was young Conan. When Khalar’s search has finally narrowed to the likely discovery of the queen at a monastery of female monks, he also learns Conan is older and hungry for revenge… LEAD

[ CORIN ]
He’s in his 30s to 40s, Caucasian, powerfully built, intelligent, graceful, master swordsman, skilled blacksmith, de facto leader of Cimmerians and Conan’s father. He resolves to answer the terrible request of his dying wife and cuts Conan out of her so she can see him. He then shoulders the burden of raising Conan, which proves to be daunting given the boy’s savage nature. Corin teaches his son the meaning of the sword: a hot blade must be cooled and tempered. When Khalar finally corners him and tortures him to death, he shows no regret nor pain, hiding his concern for his son’s safety from the eyes of the enemy. SUPPORTING

[ FARIQ ]
He’s in his 20s to early 30s, Asian or Middle Eastern, open to all ethnicities, slight of frame, piercing eyes, cruel, determined to prove to his father that he can rule the world when the time comes. But he has the mentality of a proto-goth rocker, so ruling the world will prove elusive. However, Fariq makes up for his lack of battle skills with his deft understanding of sorcery and evil determination to find the real queen of Acheron. SUPPORTING

[ ILIRA ] She is 18 to 20 years old, Caucasian or Middle Eastern, beautiful, fun-loving, a novitiate of a Greek influenced monastery. She has been hidden away in a monastery since birth since she is the designated queen of Acheron. When Khalar Singh captures her among all of the other novitiates and start the process of killing them to find out which is the real queen, Ilira maintains her courage under unbelievably cruel circumstances. SUPPORTING
[ UKAFA ] He’s in his 30s-40, very dark-skinned African or African American, massively framed at six-foot-five, gold-toothed, hardened by a lifetime of war, a leader of Kushite Tribemen from the savannahs of Kush. Ukafa is Khalar Singh’s second in command, jealous that Singh’s son, Fariq, will one day be warlord. He obeys his leader but plots the overthrow of his son. He is a mighty warrior and unbeatable in battle—until he comes face to face with Conan. LEAD
[ REMO ] He’s in his 30s, any ethnicity, thin, feral, misshapen, a mysterious warrior of dark magic who travels by shadow and surprises men with a quick death. He leads a band of tracking Shadow Scouts under Khalar Singh’s employ. He can be immensely fast and devious, his soul as twisted as his body. SUPPORTING
[ FASSIR ] He’s in his 50s, Middle Eastern, Asian, Caucasian, SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES, strict yet loving, learned and spiritual, an elder monk and leader of the monastery. He’s charged with the care and education of the queen, Ilira. SUPPORTING
[ LUCIUS ] He’s in his 30s, Caucasian, handsome, proud, haughty, lethal, a leader of a Legion of Aquilonian Mercenaries. While attacking Corin and Conan in close quarters, he is thrown into a fiery forge that disfigures him for life. His self-revulsion twists him to the point that years later he takes great pleasure in torturing prisoners. SUPPORTING
[ ONE-EYED THIEF (ONE-EYED PRISONER) ] He’s in his 20s to 30s, any ethnicity, wiry, a leader of thieves, who has had the bad luck to fall into Lucius’ grips and is being tortured by him. However, the tables are turned by Conan and this prisoner has his revenge. He later appears at Khor Khala City and offers aide to Conan as a way to pay his debt. SUPPORTING
[ ARTUS ] He’s in his 30s, tan and swarthy, almost Gypsy-like, handsome, charming, even dashing in a gruff way, a Zamoran pirate and good friend to Conan. They have shared many adventures together and trust each other with their lives. Artus is a master of the high seas with a fast and powerful ship. He shows his mastery in strategy and hand-to-hand combat during a fierce sea battle. SUPPORTING
[ CHEREN ] He’s in his 30s, any ethnicity, a blind archer with the mystical ability to strike down any enemy with his bow and arrow. He leads a large band of blind archers whose accuracy and cunning lends a powerful presence to Khalar’s army of mercenaries. SUPORTING
[ PICT ] He’s in his 30s, any ethnicity or dark-complexioned Caucasian (”pict” is Latin for “painted one”) the fourth in the band of Pict Savages. He survives Conan’s onslaught and beings Khalar Singh to where the Cimmerians camp. He is promised the heads of his enemies.
[ YOUNG CONAN ] Caucasian, tough and wiry, scary violent. At ten, he insists on joining the teenage boys entering their rites into becoming warriors. When four Picts cross his path and kill one of the boys, Conan unleashes a savagery that goes too far for a warrior. His father takes him aside and personally trains him. His father teaches him what makes a good sword but he has still much to learn what makes a good swordsman. When the Cimmerians are attacked by Khalar Singh and his mercenaries, Conan is the only survivor, the last of the Cimmerians. SUPPORTING
[ ISLENE ] She’s in her 20s, Caucasian, beautiful, courageous, Amazonian built, pregnant with her son, Conan. She is stabbed through the belly by an Aesir Raider. Her dying request to her husband, Corin, is to take the baby from her womb before she dies so that she can see him…
[ YOUNG FARIQ ] He’s ten years old, Asian or Middle Eastern, submit all ethnicities, Khalar Singh’s son, a sociopath in the making, one who has no qualms killing a wounded man with his own sword.
[ MARAUDER ] He’s in his 30s to 40s, Caucasian, massively built and brutal, a stone cold killer that takes relish in the killing of the pregnant Islene. His shield bears the emblem of Thoth-Amon. However, his arrogance is his downfall as she, in turn, kills him.
[ YOUNG ARTUS ] He’s 15 to 16 years old, Caucasian, Cimmerian, a tall muscular kid embarking on the initiation rite to become a warrior. He mocks the smaller Conan much to his regret. While on the trail, he tries to convince Conan to flee after wandering off the path into a dark pass littered with corpses hanging from trees. Young Conan saves him from the Khalar’s raid on Cimmeria. When given a chance to fight for his homeland, Artus flees to save himself.
[ THREE PICT SAVAGES ] In their late teens, early 20s, SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES, large, brutish, bearded, and wild. They are on a hunting party and come across some teenage Cimmerians—heads to add to their collections. What they didn’t count on was the savagery of young Conan.
[ NARRATOR ] A storyteller’s voice of old, VOICEOVER ONLY

Yeah and it seems that they are going to assume that no one has seen the first movie done and they have to make a new origin movie. Instead of just doing one good movie maybe actually based on a story written by REH. Tower of the elephant would just rock. Also the pics of Momoa look great but I hope they digitally give him blue eyes.

I was just thinking Tower of the Elephant would make an awesome film - Its a bit short though. He spends ten minutes (may be 15 min) in the Tavern where he Has a fight, then hooks up with Taurus of Nemidia Outside the perimeter wall of the Tower. May be five minutes with an encounter with lions in the Garden to the Base of the Tower. A minute to scale the Tower. Taurus leaves him on the roof for a minute and sucumbs to the Spider in the Treasury. Conan Ventures down alone - find Taurus of Nemidia in the Treasury, dead (3 minutes).

Works his way down to the Creature from Yag and has a story told to him. 15 minutes.

Ten minutes to Deliver the gem to Yara and escape the Tower - and possibly the city.

Now he can add the other half of the Adventure where in the Tavern he learns of the drunk taverngoer who abducted some beautiful woman and steal her - fleeing the city (15 minutes). Conan Gets the girl.

(Total 60 minutes).

Movie #1

Shortly before the story begins, a hand-to-hand battle has occurred on an icy plain. Eighty men ("four score") have perished in bloody combat, and Conan alone survives the battlefield where Wulfhere's Aesir "reavers" fought the Vanir "wolves" of Bragi, a Vanir chieftain. Thus, the story opens.
Following this fierce battle against the red-haired Vanir, Conan the Cimmerian, lying exhausted on the corpse-strewn battlefield, is visited by a beautiful, condescending and semi-nude woman identifying herself as "Atali." Upon her bodice, she wears a transparent veil: a wisp of gossamer that was not spun by human distaff. The mere sight of her strange nakedness kindles Conan's lust and, when she repeatedly taunts him, he madly chases her for miles across the snows with the intent of raping her.
Mocking him with each step, Atali leads Conan into an ambush. Undaunted by the snare, Conan slays her two hulking brothers, the Frost-Giants, and then captures her in his arms, only to have her call upon her father, Ymir, to save her. Before Conan is able to ravage her, Atali disappears in a stroke of lightning that seemingly transforms the landscape and renders Conan unconscious.
Later, when his Aesir comrades arrive, Conan believes he must have dreamed the bizarre encounter until he finds he is still grasping the translucent veil that served as the sole garment of the Frost-Giant's daughter.

You have an intermission montage of him leaving the northlands and then

One night in the Nemedian municipality of Numalia, the second largest Nemedian city, Conan enters a fantastic establishment: a great museum and antique house which laymen call the Temple of Kallian Publico.
In the midst of robbing this temple museum, Conan finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation when the strangled corpse of the temple's owner and curator, Kallian Publico, is found by a night watchman. Though the Cimmerian is the prime suspect, the investigating magistrate and the prefect of police show remarkable forbearance, allowing Conan not only to remain free, but also to keep his unsheathed sword while their nervous men search the shadowy premises.
As the on-scene investigation unfolds, the magistrate soon learns Publico had received from distant Stygia a strange bowl-like sarcophagus that now lies unsealed, open, and empty. This sarcophagus was said to be a priceless relic found among the darkened tombs far beneath the Stygian pyramids and sent to Kalanthes, a denizen of Numalia, "because of the love the sender bore the priest of Ibis." Intercepting this rare item meant for Kalanthes, Kallian Publico had believed the sarcophagus contained the fabled diadem of the giant-kings whose primordial kin dwelt in that dark southern land before the ancestors of the Stygians came there. However, clearly, the object contained within was not the diadem, but something of a more insidious nature.
While the magistrate and his men are baffled when uncovering this aforementioned information, the reader quickly begins to suspect the murderer may have been something other than entirely human and was contained within the now-opened sarcophagus.
A scream, a death, and the police retreat from the temple museum; thus, leaving Conan to fend for himself with the roaming "murderer." Conan eventually locates the culprit whom he hesitantly dispatches with his long sword, learning only in the final sentence the true horror of "the god in the bowl."

Movie #2

In the Zamorian "thief city", called by some Arenjun, or the City of Thieves, a young Conan is drinking in a rowdy tavern when he overhears a fat Kothic rogue describing a fabulous jewel called the "Heart of the Elephant." The jewel is kept in an eponymous tower by an evil sorcerer named Yara. When Conan presses the rogue for more information, insults are traded and a fight ensues. As they begin to fight, a candle is knocked over by bewildered onlookers plunging the tavern into darkness. In the resulting confusion, Conan slays the Kothian and escapes into the nighted streets of the city.

After this tavern brawl, the Cimmerian sets out to steal the aforementioned jewel on a whim and encounters along the way Taurus of Nemedia, known as the "Prince of Thieves", who has similar designs. The two thieves agree to work together and, after battling lions in the tower gardens, scale the fabled spire. Upon reaching the top, Taurus is killed by the venomous bite of a gigantic spider that Conan in turn slays in a frenzied battle.

Undaunted, Conan continues on into the eldritch tower and discovers a strange "trans-cosmic being" having the body of a man but with the oversized head of an elephant, possibly inspired by the Hindu God Ganesh. The creature, named Yag-kosha, is a blind, tortured prisoner of the sorcerer Yara.

Yag-kosha relates to Conan the pre-Cataclysmic saga of his alien people, their arrival on Earth and how he taught Yara the art of magic only to have his apprentice turn against him. At Yag-kosha's behest, Conan takes the Heart of the Elephant; slays the elephant-being in a mercy killing; extracts the heart from the corpse and, as instructed, drips its blood over the Heart of the Elephant; and, finally, uses the supernatural powers of the blood-infused jewel to dispatch the evil Yara.

with another interlude of some sort then

Conan is exploring the haunted ruins of the ancient city of Larsha in the country of Zamora, led there by rumors of hidden treasure. Behind him in pursuit is a squad of Zamorian soldiers sent to capture him for crimes of theft against rich merchants and nobles. Leading them is a captain from Gunderland named Nestor, and as he turns his head to berate his men for their constant chatter, he fails to see a rawhide tripwire set earlier by Conan. Nestor falls sprawling in the grass and sets off the trap as a large pile of rocks wipes out his men, leaving him battered and bruised but alive.

Enraged at the loss of his men and fearing the consequences of returning without his prisoner, Nestor decides to pursue Conan alone. He finally confronts him just outside the walls of Larsha as the young barbarian is searching for a way in. The two engage in fierce swordplay until Conan strikes Nestor in the head, penetrating his helmet and sending him to the ground unconscious.

Conan then makes his way into the deserted city and begins to thread the winding streets, recalling the tales he had heard concerning a horrible doom that befell trespassers, and soon confronts a monster in the form of a giant slug, fifty feet long with the ability to spit a corrosive acid with deadly accuracy. The slug chases Conan throughout the city until he climbs up to the roof of a decaying temple and manages to knock over some gargoyle statuary, one after the other, crushing the monster to death.

After climbing back down and making sure the slug is dead, he hears a familiar voice and turns to see Nestor confronting him again, this time with a bandaged head wound. Conan's blow had only succeeded in injuring him, but just as they are about to resume the combat they come to a mutual agreement to search for the treasure as allies and divide whatever they find among themselves.

They enter the royal palace of Larsha, intricately carved from a single large rock formation of black basalt, and where the treasure is supposed to lie hidden. They light torches to find their way through various passages and eventually come to a vault. Gaining entry, they discover inside a glittering hoard of treasure - gold, silver and jewels in a vast pile of splendour. However, guarding this ancient wealth are the mummified corpses of seven giant warriors seated in chairs, which promptly come to life and attack the pair of adventurers as they are gathering the treasure.

After a desperate fight, Conan and Nestor escape from the vault with the mummies in pursuit. As they follow them out into the dawn light the undead creatures immediately turn to dust, the necromantic spell broken. Then the earth beneath their feet begins to tremble in a great earthquake as walls and columns lean and fall. Conan escapes the final ruin of the city but Nestor is nowhere to be found. Calling his name and getting no response, Conan assumes the worst and heads back toward the city of Shadizar with his bag of plunder.

That night in Shadizar Conan swaggers into his favorite tavern and makes his way to the table where his sweetheart of the moment sits drinking alone and begins boasting of his adventure. He empties the contents of his treasure bag, seven priceless green jewels worth enough to buy an entire kingdom, onto the table and, like the seven undead guardians, they too crumble into worthless powder much to his chagrin. A magistrate then enters the tavern followed by a squad of the night watch with the intent to arrest him on his original charges of theft and the slaying of Nestor's men. As it turned out, Nestor survived the earthquake at Larsha and was discovered by the authorities drunk and like Conan boasting of his feat. When they had tried to apprehend Nestor he escaped but lost his loot to the police who made a dash to recover it for themselves. The magistrate who confronted Conan then reached inside the bag on the table where Conan's last remaining prize was concealed, a statuette in the form of a jade green serpent. As the man thrust his hand inside, the statuette came to life and bit venomously into his flesh, and in the resulting panic and confusion Conan made good his own escape.

On the road outside Shadizar, Conan and Nestor meet at a prearranged spot and share news of one another's misadventures. After accepting their fates with grim humor, the two amicably decide to part ways.

Though the setting he created and the era he was writing in (the 1930s) were not especially "egalitarian."

In some ways, I think Howard himself was ahead of his time with respect to women (Belit, Valaria, even Nafertari come to mind). It might be part of the longevity of the stories.

Actually, he might "give a rat's ass," the women mentioned above were the ones he was truely interrested in (especially Belit - in very many ways his distaff counterpart).
