Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Some small towns grow up around a university, their shops and other offerings catering to a scholastic clientele. Others boast famous festivals or specialized industries that draw skilled artisans and craftsmen. But in the sad case of Ravengro, the town’s claim to fame is a prison. And not just any prison, for Ravengro supported one of Ustalav’s most notorious jails—Harrowstone. Twice a year, a prison convoy rounded up the worst of the worst from smaller, less secure jails across the principality and transferred them to Harrowstone, often to await death by hanging, but always to live out the rest of their lives as prisoners.

Sovereign Court

Each of you have received a notice of Professor Lorrimar's death and have been asked to attend his funeral. You are also apparently mentioned in his will and are required for the reading of it after the funeral. You all make your individual ways to Ravengro and stay at the local inn. Lorrimar's daughter, Kendra, has been unavailable until the morning of the funeral when you are supposed to meet with her for the ceremony at the cemetary.
The morning of the funeral is rather dismal with heavy overcast and the threat of rain. You see a small group at the entrance to the cemetary. The group consists of four men, a woman, and a boy. They stand next to an ornate coffin.

Deriven approaches the group standing by the coffin. He smiles at the boy and lady and looks at everyone as he speaks, "Good morning, I am Deriven Firelion. I apologize if I am late and have held up the funeral. It is quite a ways from home to Ravengro. I only just came into town last night and was unable to make contact with Kendra to confirm the time I was to be at the cemetery.", he looks to the lady, Might you be Lady Kendra?

male Half-elf Bard 2

A tall man in Varisian clothes and a tinge of elven blood evident in his features comes up to the group as well, and greets them with a hand on his chest and a small bow. Despite the sad occasion and the poor weather, his greeting is hearty. "Good morning to you all, or as good as could be under the circumstances. My name is Hasmir, and I have come to pay my last respects to the Professor. May I ask who you are?"

Male Tiefling (Devil Blood) Magus 1 (Blackblade Kensai)

"Pleasure to meet you, Hasmir. I am Deriven.", Deriven extends a hand.

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Kraz spent the last of his gold and the bit of time before the ceremony searching Ravengro's small merchant quarter for clothing that would befit a funeral. He arrives dressed in woolen black pants and matching coat with a white linen shirt beneath, his head is adorned with a black tricorn. Strapped to his waist on a thick leather belt is a simple pair of scabbards one for a longsword and one for a dagger.

He arrives just as the first round of introductions are being made. "Good morning, I am Kraz Ryabstev." He shakes hands with each in turn before turning to address the woman, removing his hat he bows slightly, his long black hair wet still and held back by a simple leather thong. "Your father was a wonderful man full of wit and charm, he will be sorely missed. If their is anyway that I can be of assistance during your time of grief please do not hesitate for a moment."

Male Elf Wizard 01

"Hello, Hello!" bursts a tall, robed elf, seemingly from out of nowhere. His tone and manner are slightly more cheery and loud than meets the occasion, as if his mind is elsewhere. He is remarkably thin has long silver hair, glowing from underneath his brown hood. Unbefitting to his appearance, he has a youthful charm about him.

Suddenly, with a more serious expression, he bows slightly and begins talking calmly: "Pleased to make all of your acquaintances. The Professor was a dear friend of mine, and I offer my sincerest condolences. You may call me Vergil."

male Half-elf Bard 2

Hasmir returns the greetings of the newcomers and slightly raises an eyebrow at the elf's gregarious entrance, but then keeps an eye on the people who were already here. He knows that the professor had a daughter, so the lady here is probably she. "Madam, I suppose you would be miss Kendra Lorrimor? It's an honor to make your acquaintance."

Sovereign Court

The woman turns to you as you each arrive(bowing slightly in acknowldgement of Hasmir's, Kraz's and Deriven's greetings). She is young and slim and would be attractive except for her red, puffy eyes.

Thank you for coming. I am Kendra, Professor Lorrimar's daughter. We are preparing to make our way to the gravesite in the Restlands. Father Grimburrow is awaiting us there as the priests of Pharasma are not allowed to accompany the procession.
She turns and indicates the people with her.
Let me introduce you to these folks. This is Councilman Vashian Hearthmount, Councilman Gharen Muricar, tavernkeeper Zokar Elkarid and his son Pevrin, and Jominda Fallenbridge our local apothecary owner.
Each of them nod an acknowledgement as she indicates them.
If you would be so kind as to act as pallbearers, I would be most appreciative.

Four of you are needed as pallbearers

Deriven gives Kendra his condolences. He says a quiet Sarenraean prayer for the dead and takes up a handle to carry the pall.

male Human Cleric 2

Dryden walks up to the group. His dark mien is matched by his dark clothing that is only graced with a silver symbol of Pharasma.
"My condolences, miss Kendra. I will miss Petros. This custom you spoke of must be a local one as I have not heard of it. However, perhaps it is best if I do not carry the coffin to respect the custom."
He then moves to the back of the group to remain as unobtrusive as possible.

male Half-elf Bard 2

"Greetings, gentlemen," Hasmir says to the men, "and please, allow me to express my condolences about your loss, Madam. I would be honored to help." With that said, he takes one of the handles and prepares to lift the pall when the others are ready.

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Kraz steps up to the ornate coffin, taking his position in silence. He is strangely uncomfortable, for a man of faith, at funerals. And what odd circumstances he thinks to himself, while I did know the professor and indeed call him a friend, I would never have expected to be written into his will. I wonder what his daughter thinks of all this.

Male Aasimar (Musetouched) Bloodrager (Urban) 1/Paladin (Virtuoso Bravo) 13 [Champion: 6]

A wiry, tall man approaches wearing a fine cloak over well-polished armour with his head lowered respectfully. He approaches Kendra quietly, then raises his head and draws back his hood, revealing a scarred face, with a bright gold and green key over his ashen skin, dark hair and hazel eyes. He speaks with a slightly raspy voice, as if the wicked scar across his neck may have also damaged his vocal chords, "I am very sorry to hear of your loss, miss Kendra. I am Arigoder."

He nods respectfully to the others, and approaches the pall to see if any require his aid.

As the small crowd introduces itself to each other, a stout looking dwarf approaches from the town. He stands at a distance for a few moments, not entirely comfortable among all the strangers. As he notices the thin elf seemingly pop out of thin air he approaches and nods to him. "Hello Vergil, I see you've managed to appear on time."

The dwarf turns to the daughter of the professor, and bows deeply. "The professor taught me a great deal about the world and I regret I was unable to spend more time with him. He will be missed. My name is Piatra, of the Five Kings Mountains, although it has been a long time since I set foot there. If there is anything you require, I am at your service."

Sovereign Court

Deriven, Hasmir, Kraz, and Arigoder lift Prof. Lorrimar's coffin. Kendra then leads the entire procession through the gates to the Restlands, Ravengro's cemetery. The procession follows the Dreamwake, a well kept gravel path that winds through the cemetery. as you round a bend, just before the intersection with the Eversleep, A group of villagers turns the corner facing you.

How do I add images and maps?

Male Tiefling (Devil Blood) Magus 1 (Blackblade Kensai)

Deriven will keep moving forward.

Do the villager's seem hostile like they are blocking our path or do they look like they are there to watch the funeral procession?

Sovereign Court

I will continue in a moment, just waiting for info on posting images and maps.

The villagers look surly and immediately confront the group. A tall, older man steps forward and says,“That’s far enough. We been talking, and we don’t want Lorrimor buried in the Restlands. You can take him upriver and bury him there if you want, but he ain’t goin’ in the ground here!”

"What cause have you to deny Professor Lorrimar's body internment where his daughter wishes it? To deny the dead proper burial is sinful. If I do not hear proper cause given, I will call for the constable.", Deriven gives the man a hard look.

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Kraz is taken aback by the rudeness of the confronting villagers. "What's the meaning of this?...Who are you to decide whom gets to be buried where? Kraz holds back on a few choicer words, for the moment. Thinking about Deriven's comment, he says to himself, wait for the sheriff, nah take care of it ourselves.

Male Aasimar (Musetouched) Bloodrager (Urban) 1/Paladin (Virtuoso Bravo) 13 [Champion: 6]

Arigoder scowls and adds his voice to the others, "Do you, then, claim to own this land that you can make such decisions? We seek only to lay this man to rest, as I'm sure you've all done with your loved ones. If the priest is willing, what right have you to oppose this?"

Kraz, you can detect evil right? If you can, go ahead and detect on these villagers. We should try to deal with them peacefully at first and only use violence if we have no choice. Use Diplomacy first, but Intimidate if we have to, with Aid Another for both. Killing a bunch of villagers would make us look bad and probably cause Kendra problems. So we should avoid that as much as possible.

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

With a stern look on his face Kraz attempt to detect evil on the gathering crowd, failing that he will attempt to detect good.

I will leave the diplomacy to cooler heads, if it comes to dealing with the wrong-minded masses kraz always leads with intimidate.

Sovereign Court

Kraz, you detect a faint, lingering arua of evil from the man that spoke for the villagers. Also, make a bluff check unless you want it to be obvious you are using your detect ability.

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Kraz is not bluffing he is giving the man a stern gaze attempting to ascertain if he is a threat a madman or both.

I assume this is like the Paladin's ability where I only have to concentrate to activate it, not go through somatic or verbal components to cast a spell. correct me if I am wrong, new to the Inquisitor class.

Sovereign Court

correct, but, as is the case with all sp abilities and most su abilities, it is obvious what you are doing to anyone with any knowledge of such things. I allow the bluff check with a relatively easy DC for certain abilities such as detects. Also, if the ability is swift or free, I tend to make it easy to disguise.

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Understood, what the heck I will attempt to not give myself away completely.

bluff check 1d20 ⇒ 7

Piatra moves up next to Kraz and adds his own stern glare to the villagers, although he remains silent.

Thought I'd throw a sense motive in there: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

male Half-elf Bard 2

Hasmir looks at the group, his face solemn and a little sad. "I’ve known his man some; he was no vile necromancer,” he adds. ‘and whatever he was, he is now Pharasma’s to judge. As for what is left of him, it is Her will that the dead be set upon rightly, and buried as is proscribed. Do you intend to gainsay Her?

Male Elf Wizard 01

To Piatra: "Hello old friend! I wish we could have reunited under better circumstances."

Vergil takes a position behind the coffin in the procession, solemnly following the pallbearers.

When the villagers confront the party, Vergil moves beside the coffin and addresses them: "Good sirs! You must understand the greatness that this man possessed. His body deserves the best of treatment as his mind embarks on his next journey. Please, leave us be."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

I would also like to see if I recognize any of these villagers from my travels... Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Sovereign Court

Does anyone aid Vergil?

male Half-elf Bard 2

I'm effectively planning on using diplomacy, the issue is whether we roll separately or we assist one another. As for that roll: Diplomacy = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

"What man here would wish to have his daughter accosted while she tried to lay her father to rest? Let Professor Lorrimar go to rest in peace. I am a sworn foe of undead. If Professor Lorrimar were a necromancer, I would not be honored to carry his coffin. I vouch for his goodness and know he was a man that stood against necromancy.".

Sovereign Court

Vergil, with help from others, is able to calm the majority of the townsflok. They begin to disperse, but sullenly and with venomous looks directed at the strangers and Kendra. The older man that spoke disappears into the crowd as soon as he sees his support melting away.
Kendra is still furious and Councilman Hearthmount is extremely apologetic.
This is an outrage! he excalims. I am most sorry, Kendra, and to you also (he looks at your group). I swear after the funeral the sherrif will be notified. That was Gibs leading them and he will be punished.

We will just ignore all that "necromancy" stuff as the encounter didn't actually progress to that point :)

"Think nothing of it. I understand people often fear what they do not know. Why they should have come to fear Professor Lorrimar I do not understand. He was always a kind man to my knowledge. He has known mine father long.".

Deriven looks at Kraz, "An evil heart or something else. When next I see the man, I will see if perhaps something else is driving him. But you do give us cause to look into Gibs. I do not intend to leave until I am confident Lady Kendra is safe."

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Kraz nods in approval and agreement at Deriven's response. "Let's get this line moving again before these ignorant curs develop the semblance of a spine."

Male Aasimar (Musetouched) Bloodrager (Urban) 1/Paladin (Virtuoso Bravo) 13 [Champion: 6]

Arigoder nods in agreement, then adds in his raspy voice, "Indeed. This is a solemn occasion that need not be further marred by ignorance..." ...or violence, he finishes silently.

Sovereign Court

Kraz, are you familiar with the chart that is listed under the description for the spell detect evil? If not, your character would know that it was very unusual for any of the villagers (usually 1Hit Dice) to even be detectable by your power even if they were of evil alignment (as they are too low powered to show up). So the fact that Gibs even detected should be a heads up for him.

Sovereign Court

With the unpleasentness finished, the procession makes its way to the gravesite where Father Grimburrow awaits with two attendants. The coffin is placed on the stand and then lowered into the grave. He gives a short sermon based on the tenets of Pharasma and then beckons to Kendra.
She says a few words admist fresh outbreaks of tears and then turns to you and says, "Perhaps some of you would like to say some words or share your experiences of my father?"

Do we know how he died? What details do we know about his death? Was it under mysterious circumstances? A suicide? A murder? Accident?

male Human, Varisian Inqusitor 1

Kraz waits a few minutes before stepping up beside the priest, he recounts the tale of how he met the Professor. It took place at sunset in the city of Restov to the north east a good many leagues, he does not mention what he was doing there but at each mention of the Professors Kraz's normally stern emotionless face contorts into what can only be described as a smile, and warmth colors his cheeks.

"Well the story goes like this,"says Kraz settling in."I was returning from the city's central market as the sun dipped beyond the tall steep roofs of the city, the streets were mostly in shadow lit by the occasional hanging lamp and travelers were few. From beside me and out of an alley way came the most unusual procession, a gaggle of long haired wild eyed bearded northmen dressed down to their skivvies led by an equally wild eyed but very tall and skinny horned man also practically naked. The men were clearly drunk and seemed to be chasing a pink sow through the alleys of the city.

I avoided the unruly mob and continued on his way, the mob turned up the street in pursuit of the pig, moments later their was a loud crack and a frightful screech of a horse crying out in fear followed by curses as a wagon came careening down the street spilling wooden barrels and almost the cooper it belonged to.

Kraz pauses for a moment, clearly in memory "Then along came the professor" He smiles broadly. "I don't know about you all, but one of the things about the Professor I remember is his penchant for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or maybe it was the right place at the right time in hindsight, he always seemed to be one step from danger, weather he knew it or not. Anyway, back to the story. so here comes the Professor, he has stepped out onto the street from a clothiers shop arms piled high with boxes into the path of the fleeing horse and wagon. I remember the look on his face, a mix of concern and at the same time amusement or maybe befuddlement. I did the only thing I could think of, I sprinted out in front of the horse and wagon and tackled the poor man. Knocking him out of the way of the horse and wagon but into a deep puddle and causing the contents of his packages to be scattered around the street."

A long pause as if trying to remember where he was in the story, before Kraz continues. "And that's how I met the Professor, he was grateful that I had intervened but concerned for the contents of the boxes, I helped him gather them up, they turned out to be childrens sized coats, that he had purchased for the street urchins. I had the pleasure of getting to know the Professor as I was roped into distributing the coats, and later as we traveled back to Ustalav together. He always struck me as a man that took the time to make every place he visited a better place. The world is worse off without him. Kraz pauses a last time and wipes a tear from his eye. "Thanks for letting me tell my story and be a part of this ceremony." Then he steps down and lets somebody else have a chance.

Deriven pats Kraz on the shoulder as he steps back amongst the small group.

Deriven steps before the small group, I did not know the professor well personally. He was a friend of my father Lord Andaren Firelion. He often came to visit my father to keep him informed of possible evil afoot in Ustalav. My father always said 'Petros is a man that walks into the darkest places'. My father often went into these dark places with Petros and brought the cleansing light of Sarenrae with him.".

"I did not realize how dark the places were that the Professor traveled until I was sent with a message from my father for him while he stayed at our home. The professor was fond of walks at night after dinner. He was away quite a while. I found him on the garden paths talking with two men I did not know. The professor appeared frightened. I approached to delivery my message and asked the two men why they were on our grounds and who they were. They looked at me from beneath cloaked hoods. I could have sworn I saw men with feral features.

They seemed to gaze at the symbol of the Dawnflower hanging about my neck and chose to leave disappearing into the dark shadows without saying a word. The professor lay a hand on my shoulder and said 'I think you saved my life, boy'. He told me no more and walked with me back to the house. Then he and my father set forth the next day to where I do not know.

I do know the professor was a brave man. A man who put his life at risk often to protect others and seek knowledge of evil in all its hidden places not for personal gain, but for the gain of those he protected. I wonder now how the professor came to die. I truly do wonder. I think for my own peace of mind, for the sake of Kendra Lorrimar, and for the sake of Ravengro which the professor most likely wished to protect, I shall look into his death. I hope all that are here will join me. We should be sure before we leave that the Professor's death was not unnatural or caused by some terrible enemy in the professor's past. And that Kendra can carry on her life free from danger."

Piatra stares after the villagers as they leave, astounded as usual at the elf's ability to handle such situations.

As the funeral progresses, Piatra listens to the others talk, and finally decides he should say something. He stands and mumbles something unintelligible, pauses for a moment and then in a gruff voice says, "The Professor taught me many things. Of all things, we fought an evil undead creature when we first met, together. Had he not befriended me, I doubt I would have ever left the mountains I called home."

He hesitates, perhaps thinking he should say more, but then he sits down, mumbling again.

male Half-elf Bard 2

Hasmir steps up and closes his eyes for a long moment, before breathing in and opening them again. It looks like he is looking at a great distance, beyond the faraway hills. He starts speaking calmly, but clearly, and with feeling that is impossible to miss.

Good afternoon to you all. My name is Hasmir Teleri. I knew the Professor briefly – more briefly, I imagine, than many of you. More is my loss – for what little I know of him marks him as one of the most impressive men I’ve seen during my travels, and a man I can only say I am proud for knowing. I stand here now, and it is hard to describe what I feel about Professor Lorrimor. What ties my tongue is not lack of knowledge; what little I do know of him is enough to tell many a tale. It is the knowledge, however limited, of what a man he was, and that I may not be up to the task of doing him justice.

We met over a year ago in the Varisian highlands, near the Mindspin mountains, as I was travelling with my relatives. We were passing by a small town and decided to stop and see if there was any trade to be done. Instead, we found the bleeding carcass of a settlement; orks had raided it in numbers and done great harm to its people. Yet the greatest of hurts was not the dead they left or the valuables they took, but a subtler, more insidious harm – a disease they used, taught by an unknown malefactor. As it poisoned the bodies of the living, fear poisoned their minds. We saw the professor in the tavern; he had told us he learnt of this place and was passing by, and called for our aid to organize and help the survivors.

Now, a Varisian caravan is like a leaf on the wind, going wherever the Starsong guides it, but then and there there we didn’t have the heart to refuse. So we stayed through the dark of the cold nights, the sticky stench of the disease, and the chaos and bloodshed of the second orc attack – for they came back to take the prize for their dark work, expecting it to be ripe for the picking. They were wrong. The disease they had so gleefully spread was stopped; the panic they had wrought was halted. They sought easy pickings, and found death at people who had seen beyond fear, and were made stronger for it. The town still stands, echoing with cries of children, laughter of lovers, and quarrels of old men; the bustle of life. It stands as a testament to the man we have gathered to see off today.

During that time I saw the Professor was a man of many talents, and excellence in all. Yet what I remember the most is the image of a man who loved knowledge, but not for its own self, or for the power he can obtain, like many do. He was not a miser with his gifts, but shared them freely when they were needed. In his path, he no doubt inspired many as he inspired us. He didn’t just give knowledge: he gave people the way to follow their dreams. I’ve seen people have a gleam in their eyes when they talk of their beloved, of money, of glory or bloodshed – yet when the professor talked of what he loved, his eyes shone like stars." Hasmir stops for a moment, his face growing sad as he continues.

It is hard for me to believe that those stars have grown dim. When I saw an envelope with his mark on it, thoughts of his death were the furthest on my mind. Alas, he is gone, as all do, to the halls of the Lady of Graves, there to find his judgement. I do not doubt that what she will read in the book of fates is as complimentary as what we say here. Had I known of his fate beforehand, I would have begged her to stay her hand a little while yet, but now all I can say to the fates is “thank you” – that I have known a man like him. Just as I am glad to have met you, and found out more about him. He may no longer be with us, but his path he traced has not ended: with memory of him, I believe that we will all be able to travel our road not with the burden of sorrow, but with a bit of the gleam in his eye and the strength of his heart.

Having said that, Hasmir lowers his head for a moment, then as he raises it a slight smile sits on his face. "And... I believe that this is just the way he would want it.

Male Elf Wizard 01

Immediately following the dramatic pause of Hasmir's story, Vergil begins talking from the back of the crowd - a little cheerier than the occasion calls for, "I first met the professor with his back against the wall facing a terrible fiend! Luckily for the both of us I wasn't paying much attention to where I was going that day and I ended up right in between the two of them. The foe was disoriented enough that we were able to escape together, and as we fled we laughed and became close friends, as those who survive peril often do. He was a man of immense knowledge and courage, and we both learned much from each other in the years to come. He imbued his legacy and knowledge in the lives he touched, and in that way I feel he lives on in all of us today."

Male Aasimar (Musetouched) Bloodrager (Urban) 1/Paladin (Virtuoso Bravo) 13 [Champion: 6]

Arigoder steps forward and says, "I truly did not know the professor well, but from what I did know of him, he seemed a most decent man. I was a cadet with the Brightsteel Band, keeping order and serving as the unofficial town guard of a smaller hamlet in Lastwall on the Belkish border, when I met him. The professor had come to trade for an ancient text from some Half-Orcish traders who were getting things from within the Hold for him, apparently. The half-orc demanded twice the price, and when the professor refused, he followed him back to the inn, intending to take the professor's coin another way. I stepped in and, shall we say, persuaded the half-orc that the professor and his moneypouch should remain intact. The man promised to reward me, though I was only doing my duty and so I refused. He accepted that at the time, but insisted that he buy me an ale and, further, that he would make it up for me at a later date..."

Arigoder chuckles and shakes his head a little, "...he was so insistent that I agreed just to stop the discussion. We talked for much of the night, as one ale became many -- the man led a fascinating life. After a time, I'd put it out of my mind completely...", he says, rubbing the scar on his neck, "Apparently, he didn't, however -- it seems had been keeping track of me, because his letter reached me. And now I am here, bound by his promise and mine, and, by the Vault, I would not dishonour the memory or last wishes of a fine man such as this."

Arigoder steps back, rubbing his throat as if it were sore from saying so much.
