You find yourself in the small River Kingdoms town of Fort Inevitable, a resolute stronghold of law and order, just east of the Echo Wood. You have each responded to the call for "young adventurers ready to enter a world of glory and riches as new members of the Pathfinder Society, the greatest guild of adventurers in all of Golarion." You were told to meet Venture Captain Istivil Bosk at the The Red Shield Tavern, an establishment named for the striking coat of arms hanging in the common room. The taproom is busy with patrons, including a few Hellknights who reside in Fort Inevitable. A middle-aged woman works behind the bar, serving drinks with a no-nonsense attitude.

Let's get this thing going! Based on preferences from the group, we'll just kick things off with the beginning of Emerald Spire. Feel free to chat with each other, with patrons (you're welcome to create them if you'd like, though if you ask them any important questions, I'll of course give the answers), or with the woman working the bar. Also feel free to make knowledge checks and direct questions toward me about anything else you'd like.

A young gnome, with bright redish orange hair and road wear look about him enters the Red Shield. On his shoulder perches a small bird with plumage the exact same color as the gnomes hair. He scans the room looking for the Venture-Captain but settle for an empty table if does not see him.

Sliding into the tavern, past several of the taller patrons, a lithe, halfling woman makes her way to an open area to survey the room. Her dark brown eyes scan the area for this Bosk.

Well I'm in the right place, but where is this guy?

The venture captain doesn't seem to be present, and the other patrons eye you with curiosity for the moment, but quickly go back to their drinks and conversations.

A hulking man enters, bearing an iron-shod spear in his fist and a wickedly-curved blade at his hip. There is something bestial about him, something not wholly human. He scowls at the room in general, but leaves his spear by the coats at the entrance.

He approaches the barmaid and drops a pair of copper coins on the bar. "Ale," he says in a rasping voice with much in it of dark alleys and cut throats. "And I'll be needing you to point out one Istivil Bosk. We have business." This last is said in a way that suggests such business to be illicit at best and likely fraught with violence.

Dark Archive

Another of the small folk enters the tavern, this one a red-haired halfling woman wearing traveling clothes. You see her relax when she spies the Hellknights present. Then she looks around and shrugs, heading for the bar just as the half-orc asks his question. "That'll make two of us then. I'm also here to see Bosk."

The half-Orc turns and gazes on the halfling with much the same expression as a tiger regarding a lamb, if the tiger had eaten recently and wasn't feeling immediately hungry.

Through short tusks, he growls something akin to an unpleasant chuckle. "Barrakhan," he says, not bothering to give context to the solitary utterance. But he shoves roughly over to the next barstool, leaving his former stool free for the halfling, if she cares to clamber up onto it.

Hearing the name that she's looking for, Rilka turns and spots the two. Making her way over, her smiles growing as she stops.

Glad to hear I won't be alone. I'm Rilka, sounds like we'll be exploring together.

Dark Archive

Red Rilla laughs, "Well that won't be confusing at all. I'm Rilla, but everyone calls me Red. It's nice to meet you both." She climbs up to the offered barstool. "Up from Absalom and Egorian before that. How about the two of you?"

The halfling woman laughs as she too climbs up onto a vacant seat.

Oh yes that will be quiet confusing. At least there is a bit of difference. Rilka nods to the other woman's bright red hair, contrasted by her own darker brown.

Myself, I'm from pretty much all over. Been traveling since I was young. Not too long ago, found a calling. She absently touches the butterfly pendant around her neck. And now I'm here.

Dark Archive

"Ah, Desna's symbol isn't it. Song of the Spheres. I have found my own peace in Korada, the Open Hand of Harmony." She draws forth a colorful dried lotus flower that hangs from a leather chord around her neck. "And now I find myself working for the Pathfinders here in a new land. I hear we are to find this Istivil Bosk that Barrahan and then something about an Emerald Spire. Have you heard anything about it?"

A tall figure in scale armor enters the tavern, pausing for a moment in the door frame to remove her helmet. Her blonde hair is limp and a little matted, and as she approaches the bar she makes a half-hearted attempted to comb it with her fingers. Seating herself at the bar, she sets her helmet down in front of her and removes her gauntlets as well.

"Good day. I'll have a glass of wine." she calls out to the woman tending the bar.

She stopped then, and turned towards the small crowd a few seats away from her.

"I know it's rude to eavesdrop, but I couldn't help but year you mention the name Istivil Bosk. Are you lot here for the Pathfinders?"

Sovereign Court

Nodding to Rilla. Yes, Song of Spheres, Starsong, or whatever you'd like to call her. It seems she has kept her eye on me for a bit, giving me luck as I traveled. She seems to think for a bit. I will admit, I have only heard a little about Korada. Perhaps we can share stories in time.

Spotting the newcomer, Rilka smiles brightly and nods. Yes the three of us are here waiting for Istivil Bosk. I'm Rilka and who are you?

Dark Archive

The red-headed halfling adds, "And I'm Rilla, but we've already decided we'll stick to calling me Red to eliminate any confusion. Yes, all three of us are waiting for Bosk. We've asked the barkeep, but I think she's a little busy at the moment. Or perhaps trying to decide how overwhelming we'll all be for the Venture Captain."
Of course the players know Jubal is here too, but the characters don't :)

"Bosk?" the barkeep questions in an unsurprisingly gruff voice. "Haven't seen him today. You a crop of new Pathfinders? Well, good luck to ya."

She serves ale to the half-orc and wine to the half-elf before turning away toward a new set of customers.

Moments later, the door swings open and an elderly man with gray hair and a pinched, withered face steps through the frame. He looks around for a moment before he's spotted by the bartender.

"Ahh, Bosk. Your recruits are over here," she says.

The man walks over and greets the group, looking around for the final recruit.

"You, over there—are you Jubal? Please come join us."

When the gnome arrives, the man wastes no time in speaking, though he does so in a kindly voice.

"I have a job for some new recruits, and you lot seem to be the ones ready to take on the challenge. Not sure if you've heard of it, but there are some Azlanti ruins 'round these parts, we call 'em the Emerald Spire. I've been wanting to explore them for some time now, but it always seemed to fall to the end of the priority list. If you lot can at least explore the surface around it, we might get a better idea of what's there. And for yourselves, you might just find yourselves as Pathfinders before you know it."

"Now, I don't know much about the Emerald Spire, so don't go asking a lot of questions. In fact, no ones knows much about it—we're out in the middle of nowhere, see, and this area just hasn't been explored much. Do what you can, and report back what you find. It's that simple. Oh," he says with a chuckle. "and try not to get yourselves killed."

The half-Orc drains his mug, wipes his lopsided mouth on his sleeve and sets down the glass.

"That make us Pathfinders?" he asks.

"Also, where is it, this Emerald Spire of yours?"

"You are not Pathfinders yet, my friend, but this is the first step along that journey. The Emerald Spire is about six miles northeast of here, in the southwest reaches of the Echo Wood. I have a map, though you'll have no trouble finding it. It stands in a broad, raised clearing known as the Spire Glen—the glen is almost perfectly circular and centered on the Emerald Spire. It appears to be made of green glass harder than stone. It's really quite imposing."

The tall young woman lifted her wineglass to salute the two halflings.

"My name is Martina Tristram. Well met, little folk; and you as well." she said, gesturing to the half-orc.

Martina sipped her wine casually as the old Pathfinder approached and laid out the task before them. Behind her glass, she smiled.

An untouched Azlanti ruin? This is just the opportunity that I need.

"Just to be clear: if we can bring you a map of the surface of this ruin, we will receive admission to the Pathfinder society? Or is this the first of many tests?" she asked.

"If you provide us with a detailed map of the surface, not only will we ... speed up the initiation process, we'll likely commission you to continue your exploration of the ruins—a great honor, as it is one of the most important Azlanti sites in the area."

"Funds." rasps the half-Orc, as diplomatic as a war-club to the head. "What will the Pathfinders front us for proper equipment?"

"A Pathfinder's equipment is his or her own concern," the old man says. "You can take whatever you find in there—that's yours to keep. But I cannot give you anything now."

So explore the ruins and become Pathfinders, sounds like fun. Rilka pipes up.

Has there been any word on any creatures around the spire that we should be on the lookout for?

The old venture-captain turns to the halfling and continues.

"There have been goblin sightings around the area, but those could simply be members of the nearby Bloodbriar Tribe scouting the area. Also, recently we've heard a few strange rumors about undead in the region, and powerful spellcasters throughout the Crusader Road area have reported scrying efforts from an unknown source able to brush aside their normal screens and defenses. I can't imagine you'd have to worry about that on the surface, however."

Dark Archive

"Yeah, let's hope we don't have to deal with anything that powerful. Might be just a titch beyond our capabilities. Goblins and undead sound like trouble enough. Hopefully they're just in the area and not in the ruins. Almost perfectly circular? That seems a little strange doesn't it?"

Undead, ugh. Looks like I have to make a quick purchase before heading out. Anyways hopefully we won't run into those responsible for that kind of magic.

Will make sure to pick up a club.... can't believe I forgot a blunt weapon *facepalm*

Dark Archive

"What are you thinking of purchasing Rilka? Holy water or something else. I have to admit, my training was a little rushed and I don' think we learned to much about how to deal with them except for a couple spells."

Well from what I remember, depending on the creature it's something blunt or something sharp for a weapon. I got he sharp, just need the blunt. She pats the pair of starknives at her hips. And to be truthful, the trek here has exhausted most of my funds. Hopefully we can find some gold or stuff to sell soon, so we can all get some extra equips.

Dark Archive

"I still have some money, but I only have pointy weapons. Maybe I should look into some other purchases too before we go if I can carry them. I'll definitely pick up some paper too so we can map this ruin. I have the ink and ink pen already for my spellbook."

The red haired gnomes waits for a lull in the conversation before speaking (well more like mumbling), Um well, I do have some magic that is very effective against undead, though it is of limited quanity and can also be used to heal wounds so I don't know how much I can use against the undead, but I can definitely use it in an emergency, not that I don't think you can take care of undead with out me, but I wanted you to know that I had the magic, but, you know not a lot of it.
By the time the gnome finishes his face is almost as red as his hair.

Dark Archive

"Don't worry Jubal. Most of us won't bite. I can do a little bit of healing too, but most of my magic is arcane in nature and mine is pretty limited too. Not like those powerful spellcasters Mr. Bosk is talking about."

Watching the group chat amongst themselves, Bosk stands up and bids them farewell.

Oh, yes I much prefer a bed to camping, which is odd for a gnome I know, but I guess I'm more of a city gnome you might say, not that I live in a city or can only live in cities, I actually like a nice small town with farms all around for walks, where your neighbors are close but not that close, you know. realizing he is off topic again Jubal blushes and shuffles his feet. He seems to recover a little faster than last time though and manages to give Rilla and Rilka a sheepish smile, It will be nice to have so much healing magic amongst us.

After all purchases are made, the group sets out for the Emerald Spire. The trip is mostly uneventful, and after a few hours traveling on the road and through the Echo Wood, you emerge from the underbrush. You find yourselves starting up at a ruined keep guarding a broken central tower, all made of smooth, green glass. It's obvious that a grand battle took place here many years ago, and the clearing around the ruins lies barren, with sickly weeds struggling to rise from the magic-blasted earth. Melted chunks of twisted glass pepper the ground, lending a green hue to the clearing light. Despite the damage, however, the glass of the keep itself seems to have avoided the ravages of time, with those pieces that survived the initial cataclysm unmarred by pitting or cracking, clean of moss and other clinging debris.

At the top of a steep dirt path winding up through the rubble, a doorway opens into darkness, its entrance seeming to steal light into its inky depths.

The current map will be linked at the top of the page shortly. If you decent to go up the path, make sure you let me know your marching order.
