Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Few Pathfinders stay in Absalom long before they become quite familiar with Drendle Drang's abrupt summons at ungodly hours. So each of you felt little surprise when a message came to you just before dinnertime, requesting your presence at the Grand Lodge for an immediate briefing. More curious however was the name on the card: Amari Li, the recent arrived Venture Captain of the so-called Lantern Lodge, and a normally quite conscientious and measured woman.

Having made your way dutifully through the streets of the City at the Center of the World towards the Lodge, you now wait in a sitting room outside Li's office. Cookies and tea are laid out on tables amidst comfortable couches and chairs as you see Pathfinders slowly file in past lush tapestries lining the walls.

Feel free to introduce your characters to each other in here, as you wait to see what the Venture Captain thinks is so urgent.

Silver Crusade

A young woman gripping both ankles behind her arched neck and back, ceases rocking on a highly toned tummy as she spots you. She unpretzelates herself before rising from a sitting position to her full 5' 6" in height.

Her long hair is drawn into a tight plait which falls down her back, almost to her waist. She wears a double-weave judogi of royal blue, securely tied at her waist with a white cotton belt.

The martial artist looks remarkably animated for the time of night. She nods at you before slinking to the refreshment table, where after a number of quiet, efficient movements she lifts a cup of steaming green tea to her lips.

“Good evening. Antonella Schiavo. It seems we are being treated to one of Drandle Dreng’s famous midnight briefings, delivered by VC Li.”

She wears a wry smile. “There are rumors VC Dreng is a vampire. I have considered channelling ethereal energy is his presence to test the claim. Do you think that I should dare?”

Earlier...

A lithe woman painted in tiger stripes roams through the crowd performing tricks, sleights, the occasional flashy acrobatic flip, and acts of minor legerdemaine. She is dressed in a finely made black catsuit and a high quality crossbow is set up by the performance space (for her more daring stage tricks). On closer inspection, the tiger stripes are not paint, but rather a gentle downy fur, and the tail is most assuredly real.

Following beside her is an 'elf in miniature' - a small 2' tall fey creature dressed for adventure in a fine leather jerkin, also carrying a child sized crossbow that looks too big for it though beautifully made othewise. The 'elf' has very pleasant little features, and seems to be joining Scarlet in all sorts of mischief. A large black and white spotted dog follows along barking playfully, a miniature trick riding saddle on its back.

As the spectacle comes to an end, the small fey moves in to collect the takings in a hat -"More performances tonight, acrobatic displays, magic, derring-do! The Scarlet and Poppy Show with Rusty the Wonderdog!" the mini-elf calls.

***

Scarlet picks selectively at the refreshment table then curls comfortably into a chair.

"Scarlet, and that is Poppy" she gestures to the mini-elf who smiles broadly in response, "I normally work at night, so it is always welcome to be briefed at such an hour - mornings are a touch of a chore. I like your dare though, what could go wrong?"
Scarlet has her crossbow, and on closer inspection wears a mitril chain shirt with the leather catsuit, but appears to be short of any melee weapons.

"You a fellow acrobat Antonella?"

“How unfortunate, Alektara. For I most definitely am.”

The smile doesn’t leave the paladin’s face. “Perhaps we can agree on the importance of learned texts? As a devotee of Irori, I revere books and the knowledge they contain.”

Shifty Scoundrel wrote:

The cleric brings two fingers to her mouth to make a short, sharp *whistle* of warning. “Stand clear if it pleases you, Brother Poppy! And here … I … go …”

The monk manages a number of warm-up forward rolls without difficulty, but unfortunately winds up flat on her back after failing to fully raise both legs in time during a simple backflip-cum-handstand.

“As an acrobat I make a good vampire-slayer, Sister Scarlet. It seems I need more study before contemplating a leap to the professional ranks.”

Smiling, the paladin raises her right hand to accept anyone’s offer to pull her to her feet.

"Sister Poppy, thank you. I know it is hard to tell under all this armour and the like, but I'm most assuredly a girly, although a little bit of a handsome one fair enough. not like that Kittens Underfoot the Halfling girl who lived down the road, why she had the features of a fine porcelain doll as though shaped by the best craftsmen in all of Oppara but a mouth like a salty sailor! Indeed she caused quite the incident at the local faire when she was crowned in the beauty pageant and given the Belle-flower award, well, you should have seen it, she wandered over and accepted the award and the crowd was ecstatic - but when she gave the speech - well, wasn't that a bit of a prickly pear! I hadn't heard that much outrage in years!"

Silver Crusade

“My apologies, Sister. Brilliance, let alone perfection evade me with ease.”

“Although I barely knew him, my late pater was a sailor. Although I cannot countenance their more explicit expressions nor their casual blaspheming, there is something concise and descriptive about a Tar’s lingo that unambiguously conveys its sender’s message.”

Antonella stands using her hands to brush away any Skyreach dust from her monk's robes. “An example to us all, Mistress.”

The paladin moves closer to the fey girl. Take 10 Perception: 10 + 7 = 17

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

As each of you chat in the waiting room at the Grand Lodge, the door to Venture Captain Amara Li's office swings open. The stoic Tian woman that summoned each of you here now beckons you inwards, and places an ornate tea tray on the edge of her desk. Steam drifts upwards from the freshly-made pot. Li invites you to partake of the drink when you enter the neatly organized room to see various tapestries and artifacts imported from the distant land of Tian Xia.

“I would like to thank you all for coming here despite the
lack of explanation. Circumstances have forced me to be
discreet in this assignment. There are many who would put the
information I am about to share with you to more unsavory
ends.”
Amara begins to take an initial sip from her own teacup
before she continues.

“Several months ago I arranged the successful sale
of a pair of tomes from my homeland of Tian Xia to
a versed historian here in Absalom. Of these books,
the Infernal Incantation was the more highly sought
after, as it is said to contain the secrets of binding the
legions of Hell.”

Amara takes another sip of her tea and then places
the cup on her desk, her expression turning cold. “The historian—one Yargos Gill—has spent the past several weeks studying the book from within his Absalom villa. To make matters more complicated, Yargos decided to try performing one of the rituals held within the Infernal Incantation late last night. From the breathless ramblings of his assistant who arrived at my door only a handful of hours ago, it would appear that something went horribly wrong with the ritual Yargos enacted.”

“From what I was told, the ritual revealed to Yargos and
his aides that the Infernal Incantation was
not a guide on
imprisoning fiendish forces, but instead the book itself was
a prison for the armies of Hell. Within the confines of those
ancient pages reside hundreds—perhaps even thousands—
of devils eager to escape their long imprisonment. If
bumbling has caused some sort of disturbance within the
tome, then we need to ensure it is fixed as quickly and as
discreetly as possible. It would not do the populace any good
to realize that a full-on infernal invasion could appear in the
middle of the city!”

“I need you to go to Yargos’s estate, where his aide has
already informed him of your impending arrival. Once you
meet with the historian, learn what you can about the book
and how to reverse the meddling he has caused. Above all else,
ensure that the legions of Hell are contained.”

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 15:
You’ve come across references to the Infernal Incantation before: as Amara says, it’s a tome from distant Tian Xia said to hold the secrets of binding the denizens of Hell.

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 20:
In addition to its rumored content, the Infernal Incantation has a relatively unknown sister document: the Celestial Song.

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 25:
Both the Incantation and the Song are written in Celestial and Infernal – but not in the order one would suspect. The pages of the Infernal Incantation are written in a harsh and sinister Celestial script, while the pages of the Celestial Song are penned in crisp Infernal.

Knowledge Arcana or Religion 30:
Within the Celestial Song are rituals that are rumored to sway the minds of those nearby, but before these powers take effect, the tome unleashes a great angelic chorus that takes hours to complete.

"Why yes," Amara Li nods to the elf. “The books came in a set, each littered with writings in Infernal and Celestial script. Both books were discovered in Tian Xia some time ago, and were held by a private collector in my home city of Goka.”

The Venture Captain takes another sip of her tea, but you notice her hands are slightly shaking. "Unwise would be the better term I suspect." she sadly agrees with Scarlet. I can read celestial, so I could read the Infernal Incantation and Scarlet the Celestial Song. Yes, for any reason someone decides to wrote the books in the opposite lenguaje one should think.

Garret listens to Alektara questions, and shares his own opinion. We should start by talking to Yargos, of course. Knowing about his backer could be useful, but who can tell us more than Yargos itself.

Then we should undone wichever stupidity Yargos had done, preferably after agreing with him the books as a payment, if only to be sure he doesn´t mess with them anymore.

Also, for what I heard, I think we should convince him to reconsider his field of study. Maybe if he focus in studying the snails mating habits he woudn`t risks Absalom safety again.

Combat tactics... mine usually are to cast a spell to help everybody and be in the middle of the combat distracting the enemy from the real threats. But sometimes I had to forget tactics completely and run to save someones life.

"Greetings fellow Pathfinder. I am called Periel, and I have the honor to aid you in the next task. I will aid you with sword and spell, ready to explore, report cooperate. Forgive my being late, there was a problem in communications."
Looking at Antonella and feeling a fellow paladin he nods politly, then looks at each other as if reading their strengths and abilities.

Antonella returns a curious gaze to VC Li. “Did you perceive anything noteworthy about Sister Lauralei, Venture-Captain?”

"Not especially." Amara Li responds. "A mousy girl, but she seemed to understand the gravity of the issue. As soon as she delivered her message she hurried off to 'help them'. Which now that I think about it would imply Yargos had at least one other helper, or roommate."

The venture captain gives a nod of acknowledgement to Periel as he arrives, but then straightens up. "Now, if there are no more questions I would ask you to be off. I wish each of you luck but time is of the essence!"

Li does not know anything more than she has told you: the situation fell on her desk just a bit before it became your case. If you are ready to head out...

Following Amar Li's directions, your trip from the foreign quarter to Eastgate is mostly uneventful. The streets of Absalom are mostly calm, as the men and woman of the city sit eating meals indoors while the city itself transitions between the bustle of the day and the different hum of activity that is the nightlife. Eventually you come before Yargos Gill’s villa. It is a stand-alone edifice that would normally meld into the background of Absalom’s various structures - were it not for the massing crowd of local citizens in front of the entrance.

Most of them gaze upwards as the murmur as up above on the building's second floor, lights flicker as if burning orange and red embers dance within.

"Cheryl said there were screams in their earlier. That true?"
"Course there'd be screams. Its a fire. At least it's sticking to just the one building for now."
"Yeah, but the screams were right before the fire started..."

Past the mingling crowd, the front door to the villa stands ajar.

Antonella *bows* to the Empress of Heaven’s holy warrior. “The honor is mine, Good Periel. Antonella I am called.”

“Forgive me, Brother Periel … but you bear a passing resemblance to my sensei, Karu the Bold Strider. Though the laudable Master of Scrolls would insist the likelihood of you two being related would be in the vicinity of zero.”

As the party passes the Foreign Quarter markets on the way to Eastgate, Antonella purchases another oil of bless weapon. While upon mentioning Ollysta Zadrian’s name to the merchant, the priestess is also presented with a potion of fly.

GM Zoomba:
I would like to purchase another oil of bless weapon for 50gp and a potion of fly for 2PP, if you’re OK with that.

After weaving deftly through the assembled throng, while quietly praising the Master of Masters for her lithe frame, Antonella takes a moment to assess the open doorway.

“I would suggest you citizens disperse.” Antonella calls back sternly to the crowd. “Until we, the occupants' allies, manage to restore order to this dwelling.”

"Yvette, would you mind casting mage armor on me from my own wand, please?" The cleric presents a wand of butter-colored Huon pine, in both hands to the mage.

After nodding at Scarlet’s words, the monk looks pointedly at Periel and Alektara, before advancing on the door. “Shall we, brother and sister?”

At the burning house. "This is not a good start, we should check if there are survivors!" And with that the paladin sprints to the house.

Yes, those purchases are fine

At Antonella's words, most of the crowd begins to thin out and return to their homes. One of two seem ready to argue to point, but upon noticing the weaponrty and armor each of you carry they quickly head off.

"See, what'd I tell you. Adventurer problem."

As Periel and the rest hurry inwards, the see that the immediate interior is in pristine condition. A basic dining room, kitchen, and meeting room fill the first floor. Most of the floor is dark, but the gloom is broken by a dim red light spilling down the stairwell from the floor above.

Hurrying upstairs, you find that the light is coming from behind a closed door. Swinging it open reveal sheets of dancing orange and red fire covering the walls of this long room, forming blazing curtains around two windows facing the streets below. The rest of the room, and the wooden door itself, however are completely absent of flames.

In the center of the floor is etched a swirling sinister symbol, formed of a darkened red substance and accented by a few nearby candles. Opposite the only entrance into this room is a large open altar filled with more candles, a single blood-stained dagger, and an open book from which torrents of flame feed the inferno along the walls. Nestled in the two corners to either side of the entryway are three humanoid bodies — two toppled over one another to the south and a third in the north, all face down on the wooden floor.

Hovering near the ceiling of the ten-foot tall room flaps an angelic warrior figure, but her wings are stained stained a dark black and she turns to you with a merciless gaze. Grating hateful words in a harsh tongue appear in your mind as the creature brings a longbow to bear on you.

Is her height such that we can still hit her from the ground, or would we need to jump up on the table?

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

The ceiling's not high enough for her to be out of reach, so you can hit her from the ground, assuming you're at least Small.

Also it would be a knowledge Planes check to if the thing.

Round #1

Antonella does not lower herself to offer the black-winged creature a single word.

Antonella: At the moment she has a bow out, and no attacks comes your way as you move around here. HOWEVER, she is currently hovering in the corner of the room: behind her is solid wall. (I know, the map provided is a bit dark and hard to make out details well). You may re-do your move if preferred, otherwise you'll stop either just south of her or just to her left.

Also Periel, to the surprise of everyone I'm sure, your smite works :)

No worries. I am happy with where you have parked her, GM Zoomba.

Alektara recalls some of her training from her years studying for her Confirmation.

The being before you is an Erinyes, Infernal Furies that are Hell's executioners. Like most devils, the fiends have hides that can only be fully pierced by good weapons, are immune to fire, and are also resilient against spells some SR, as well as being able to shrug off some cold and acid attacks. Erinyes in particular are known for their prowess at archery, though they aren't pushovers with their swords either.

The lore warden recalls a vague lesson about spells they have - and something about a rope? - but she regretfully thinks she must have fallen asleep for that part of the class.
