GM Zimmer's Curse of the Crimson Throne (Inactive)

The king is dead! In the Varisian port city of Korvosa, the death of a monarch leads to chaos. It's up to a band of bold adventurers to stop the spread of tyranny before all of Korvosa is crushed beneath the queen's iron fist.

Durriken looks at the little girl, then back at Iosephu. "Yes, he's dead. Yes, I helped. No, those two children, and the others Goffred are hoping to find, would not have a chance at a future if we all hadn't done what we did last night."

He pauses briefly, some emotion clouding his face. When he continues, there's anger in his voice, directed nowhere in particular, with something more behind it. "He would deny them the chance to be children. When he was done with them, he disposed of them. I know because I was one of them... I don't have any righteous reason for why I did what I did, but that doesn't mean it wasn't something that needed to be done all the same." The young man's shoulders shake and sag a little before he regains his composure, eying his master solemnly.

"Siggy, go upstairs."

Though her voice is soft, it's still firm and leaves little room for arguing. Raseri waits until the girl has gone up far enough that she won't be able to overhear what is being said before she begins to speak.

"Durriken did no more or less than someone from my clan would have done. Lamm murdered, cheated, and stole for his amusement and profit. He took my sisters from me and would have feed one of them to a beast to punish the other."

Raseri's jaw clenches as she brings the beginnings of a emotional storm under control. She takes a moment to compose herself before speaking again.

"If he, if any of these men, hadn't been there, I'd likely be dead and Alfsigr would not be far behind. Because of Durriken's help, I have one of my sisters and a clue to find the other."

She lets out a sigh and looks up again, this time with a wry grin on her face.

"Thank you for offering my sister a home until I find Alfhildr. I'm sure she'll be a handful. I don't know how to thank you for that kindness, so if you ever need help with anything, let me know."

Tristain, moved by Raseri's speech, nods.

"I, too, will do what I can for you and these children. I don't have much, but I will share what I have."

I wish someone had done the same for me...and my beautiful friend.

Durriken raises an eyebrow at Raseri's statement, then nods slightly to the woman, then at Tristain. He's clearly uncomfortable with being in the center of what is going on.

"I may not owe you anything, in your mind, Iosephu," he begins slowly, "but I believe I do. And I owe my companions as well."

Male Chelaxian Void Wizard 5

Fredo joins in the chorus defending Durriken. "Nor was this matter with Lamm simply personal. Lamm weighed upon the folklore of this city like a corpse, rotten, wet, and heavy. Korvosa's people have an appointment with history. Somehow, our removing his spectre was part of that.

"Lamm turned everything he touched to ash," admits Fredo, "And maybe that includes our endeavor. But Raseri's right. Maybe its being our collective endeavor saves us all from Lamm's corruption." Fredo tries to catch Durriken's eye, their conversation from watch last night clearly informing his speech.

Shadow Lodge

Iosephu listens to the group trying to justify themselves, a severe look on his face. His eyes are fixed on Durriken. "You don't need to tell me Lamm was a bad guy," he says, "I'll sleep a little better nights now he's gone, even with kids back in the house." That last joke seems thin and forced. He turns away and looks at the wall. His face looks crumpled up like discarded butcher paper.

"I just don't want you taking his place," he says. "I worry for you sometimes, Durriken, you know that?"

M Human - Loon 14 AC: 13 (11 FF) CMD (20/18) CMB +5 Fort +8; Ref +10; Will +14

Tristain nods along with Goffred in agreement.

"I'm glad Lamm is gone, no doubt. I think the city would be healthier for his passing, like the removal of a tumor. However, the city seems to have gotten worse overnight. I still have worries and my friend is still out there." Tristain feels the weight of the loot from Lamm's place on his back.

"Should we move on to sell these goods? What do we do after that?"

M Human (Varisian) M Human Ranger LE L2 | AC17 T13 FF14 | HP 21/21| F +4 R+7 W+2 | Init+3 | Perc+7

Durriken pauses to consider Iosephu's words, then glances at Goffred, their conversation from the night before worming its way back to mind. "Yesterday, I would have agreed. But somehow I don't think these four will let me." He smiles wanly "Old habits die hard, it's true. But I don't think they'll let me fall into any new ones." Or is that what you're really worried about? That if I do, they'll take care of that problem, too...

"I think we need to get movin'. We have things we need to do before the city falls further into madness."

Durriken frowns and glares at the diminuitive woman, but the corner of his mouth twitches slightly. The glare then breaks into a luagh - a rough, ragged thing that seems like it's not seen much use in several years. "I almost want to see you try!" The statement is obviously a joke, not a challenge, as the smile on Durriken's face attests.

Tristain turns to Raseri.

"What makes you think this place will turn into *more* madness? Maybe the top has blown and people have spoken the vent has been relieved. I don't want more chaos in my city."

C'mon, Korvosa, hold it together.

Male Chelaxian Void Wizard 5

"It's only been a day," says Fredo to Tristin, still smiling at Raseri's antics. "True, there are weeks where decades happen, but that's to make up for lost time, and Korvosa's lost a lot."

"As for you," Fredo says, rounding on Durriken, "we'll see if you can stop Ras standing you on your head when you're three feet tall." He throws a wink at the other man, just to show he's playing along, then heads for the door.

"Thanks again, Iosephu," he says. He lifts the latch and the door swings out into the street. "We'll be back."

Shadow Lodge

The square north of Iosephu's shop is a bit fuller than it was before. From far away it seems to be full of couples and trios making their way north and northwest. As you get closer, the silhouetted images resolve into their true selves. Korvosan Guards, some in pairs, some alone, are leading half-conscious people from the bridge to the Citadel. The noise of the melee can still be heard, but it's farther away now, and the Sable Company have left their perches on the top of the gatehouses to wheel over the crowd.

It's getting less comfortable to do so, but you again give the scene a passing glance and then a view of your backs before heading into one of the shops. It deals in sundry curiosities, and Durriken and Tristain think that the owner, one Barlish Rovet, will at least be interested in what you have to offer.

Roleplaying commerce is frightfully boring to me, so don't be surprised if the quality of my posting drops for this scene.

GM Zimmer, can you give us a general gp split for what we have sold or should do the maths to work it out?

Tristain happily goes in to sell the goods from Lamms, with the exception of things people want, and buys some additional inks for his scroll work.

Theron starts to feel himself again with the group no longer burdened with the children. Nothing against them... they can't help being distractions and liabilities.
He follows Tristain into the shop and noses around a bit.

I'm posting what I'm claiming and selling in the disscussion thread. Welcome back Theron, we missed ya!

I'm also fine with just pushing past the selling of the items we've found unless it's plot important.

Durriken is content to follow the group, generally waiting outside if anyone goes into a shop to look around.

After gathering coins from Theron and Raseri, Tristain holds in his hands more gold than he's ever held before--by a 100 fold.

So much money. And I would give it all to keep Korvosa safe.

Sighing deeply, Tristain purchases the wand from a local Abadaran church, trusting in them to conduct things honestly before purchasing some inks.

"Now what? And what about that brooch. We might be able to find a buyer for it on the black market. Still not sure why we don't sell it. We could use the money to help the City."

Tristain looks at everyone.

"What now?"

Fredo is torn. On the one hand, he's wanted for some time to examine Castle Korvosa, and the monumental dais on which it was built. On the other, the people in it were responsible for the state of the city and for the repression being meted out to cover their misrule. He speaks slowly. "It would have been better had Lamm never taken the thing, or if we'd never found it. But I don't think we can throw it away unmarked by anyone, which would trace it back to us as surely as trying to fence it." He sighs.

"Raseri's right. We can take it to Castle Korvosa and try to claim a reward. At the same time, we can say where we got it." His expression turns thoughtful. Openly proclaiming Lamm dead, from the highest point in the city, coupled with the fact that the dockers have probably discovered his body by now, would surely dispel any myths surrounding the man. And if one of the courtiers had been involved with him, and with Aless' death, going to the palace would be a good starting point to try and find out.

Durriken looks at the others, his expression somewhat grim. "Not sure I really want to go up there, I might hang either way... But if you think it's the best way, then I will go with you."

He pauses briefly. "Think returning this thing might get me a bit of a pass if anyone's looking for me?"

M Human - Loon 14 AC: 13 (11 FF) CMD (20/18) CMB +5 Fort +8; Ref +10; Will +14

Tristain nods, not really worried about his own skin as he's always been neither on the law nor disorder's side in regards to Korvosa...he's always found a balanced middleground.

"Alright, if we're tainted by the trinket, we best get back to returning it and moving on. Follow me, I know the way to the Castle."

Tristain leads the party towards Castle Korvosa, mindful of any dangers in the streets.

"I guess I can return it if anyone wants to stay outside. Whatever works."

Male Human healer NPC

Theron responds to Durriken "Certainly more likely than if it were to simply be found in our possession... should we be stopped for any reason."
"I am quite willing to go along. Good chance to get a better idea of the state of things here, and assuming things go well... I wouldn't mind making a few connections that bathe more regularly than my current contacts."

Shadow Lodge

In agreement that you'll head to the Castle, you step out again into Eodred's Walk. It hasn't been that long, and nothing much has changed. However, as you enter the square, a rumble issues from below, and a moment later the street cracks apart, long fissures running across the paving stones. The road bursts upward, casting chunks of rock into the air and raining cobbles on the surrounding area. The stench of sewer filth and garbage belches forth, heralding the approach of a loud and hungry beast, drawn by the chaos and noise of the world above. It pulls itself up into the light with three tentacles, allowing two of its three stumpy feet to take root on the broken-up square. It opens its maw, which takes up most of its bulbous front, and bellows.

Almost as an afterthought, Fredo claps Raseri on the shoulder, his ring filled with a pulsating light. Her muscles swell visibly under her clothes, and Fredo can almost hear her heart speeding up to deal with her body's newfound demands. "Go get 'em," he says encouragingly. Fredo wants to say more, but, mindful of Raseri's refusal to hold on to any alchemical or magic items, refrains from mentioning that it's his doing. If she wanted to, she'd figure it out, and form her judgment.

"Corrall, kill, do what you must," says Fredo as Raseri charges in. He grits his teeth as the thing grabs her and lifts her up off the ground. He's only dimly aware of the others' actions and threats, all his attention on the problem of getting her out of the mess she's in. He dips his hand into his pouch, easily finding what he's looking for: a glass capsule the size of a thimble, with fine iron filings inside. He crushes this in between his hands, wincing at the pain, then blows the resulting powder at Raseri.

As soon as Fredo blows, Raseri begins to grow in size, straining against the creature's hold. "As will I," he calls, hoping she can hear. "I hope you don't mind."

Cast Enlarge Person on Raseri. The buff from last round's run out, but this one will give her:

+2 STR
-2 DEX
-1 size modifier to attack and AC
+1 size modifier to CMD and CMB
+1d6 weapon damage

"RAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Pain lances up her arm as the creatures horrid teeth sink into the leather and cloth around her forearm before savaging the flesh beneath. She thinks she can hear her bones cracking under the pressure. Her eyes widen in surprise as a tentacle slams into her side and quickly wraps her petite frame. This time, she feels her ribs crack and the blood run freely down her arm as the creature pulled her free and off the ground.

It was her fury, her sheer force of will that kept her conscious. It was Tristain that healed her wounds enough for her to fight on. It was Goffred that gave her a change to kill the thing.

Suddenly as big as the creature that tried to eat her just a second ago, the stubborn woman ignores the tentacle trying to crush her ribs again and goes for the killing blow with her now massive sword.

She fought the beast's grasp and brought her sword high before slamming it into the top of the creature's body. Her scream of pain turned into a roar of fury as she hewed muscle and bone.

Durriken, kill this thing before it goes. I don't think Ras is going to be getting another hit in.

Shadow Lodge

I'm not sure how Ras got this hit in. She's grappled, and has no business using two-handed weapons. That said, the damage you dealt to the creature will remain - as will the grappled condition - since your post is five hours old and thus impossible to edit.

Durriken, you're up.

Knowing he needs to hurt the creature to actually get its attention, Durriken drops his axe and grips the longsword in two hands, swinging as hard as he can at the creature's tough hide. He screams, a gravelly, wordless challenge to the beast. Come on, try to eat ME, you...

longsword swing, two handed: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 = 18
longsword damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

I THINK flank still applies here. If not, that's a 16. At least the creature is losing 4 points of dex for being grappled, as well.

Durriken, you're up.

Well I think we can knock another 4 four points off the attack for using it one handed and use the one-handed damage. I think Ras still hits, but the creature is still up, even after Durriken's hit. Damage is now 14 if we go that route.

Sorry I didn't double check the rules that is totally on me.

Shadow Lodge

Okay, that makes sense. Raseri's attack hit for 14 damage, and Durriken's for 4. Durriken, for reference, you are not flanking, but taking a DEX penalty for grappling pushed its AC low enough to hit on a 16.

Raseri brings the pommel of her sword, now a lump of steel larger than a man's head, down on the thing's head, just above its jawbone. Something cracks, and several teeth clatter down into the sewers. The creature opens its mouth to scream just as Durriken hacks at the base of one of the tentacles holding Raseri. It completes its scream as it turns on Durriken, spraying him with ichor mixed with the refuse of Korvosa. It then clamps its jaw shut as best it can.

Bite @ Durriken: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Durriken's Fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Durriken, take 5 HP damage.

Meanwhile, the creature tries to maintain its hold on Raseri, who seems intent on growing til she bursts the bounds Durriken weakened.

Maintain grapple: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
Constrict: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Raseri, take 5 HP damage. You remain grappled.

map is unchanged.
