"Gossip seems to move fast wherever my brother and I go." Taj eyes the Sherriff, her inner turmoil lighting sparks once more in her hair.

Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

This Sir Jasper looks like someone who might stand out in a crowd. Does she remember anything about the man?

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Furthermore, what did he want with her brother and her father that didn't involve her? Was this something to do with Vy's former family? She tries to think about what a "Sir" might contact her brother about. Though... from what she remembered of Ameiko's conversation, weren't Vy's family important locally? Maybe there are other relatives that want to contact Vy, or maybe there's an inheritance.

Still, her brother and father's furtiveness bother her. This is her brother, and he hasn't confided in her. When Vy joins them, she reaches out and takes his hand. "তুমি সব সময় আমার ভাই থাকব , এবং আমার হৃদয়ে."

Celestial:
"You'll always be my brother and in my heart."

Surely, they will tell her about whatever it is later. Meanwhile, the Sheriff has asked them a favor. She steps forward. "I'd like Sandpoint to be my home for a while. If it needs me, I can help with the scouting."

Then she smiles over at Oskar and the others. "C'mon guys. Let's do this."

Dead Suns:

You remember your father talking one time about Sir Jasper, something about him being the day-to-day overseer of the Sandpoint Mercantile league. But you quickly zoned out. Merchant business is so not your thing.

When talking to Sir Jasper, Vy seamed eager, Pateba and Sir Jasper serious.
Vy mostly got nervous when the sheriff joined the conversation.

The sheriff starts to lead the group trough the graveyard.

"Your help is much appreciated. We're a fairly rural town. With our best trackers out in the field, and the town guard busy, all the hands are welcome. The goblin attack was... disconcerting."
The sheriffs face gets a grim look. "We do have the occasional problem with them. But nothing this major. They are cowardly by nature, and prefer to attack lonely travelers. The few times they have attacked the town, it was at night, and never this organised. A strong leader can unite the goblins, and let them put aside their fear for us, but that is only temporarily."

Halting between several old crypts, the sheriff gives you all a stern eye.
When their morale broke, the surviving goblins fled north in droves, in some cases preferring to leap to their certain deaths off the cliff at Junker’s Edge rather than be captured.
Several of the little menaces we managed to capture alive, but they proved useless when interrogated; none of these goblins knew much more than that they were given orders to kill everyone in town and burn down the place.
None of them could even remember their leader’s name, apart from the fact that he was one of “you longshanks.”
Their leader was on a secret mission to the town’s graveyard—that much most goblins managed to agree upon, but none of them knew what that mission was. It was secret, after all!"

The sheriff rolls his eyes at the last statement.

"We hope that investigating the crypt yields some clues. I did not want to tell you all this in earshot of the citizens. If they start formulating theories on half truths and missing information, we could have a panic on our hands. They have a right to know, at least when we know what to actually tell them."

"Yes, Oskar. I can see them too."

As Rataji holds his hand, Oskar shuts up kind of fast. “Oh, yeah. Sure. I was just, uh. Yeah.” He casts a quick sideways glance down at the smaller hand clutching his own. Not sure whether he should keep holding it or not, Oskar lets it linger. I should let go, right? After some point? But not right away, that’d be rude. I don’t know. Why are you asking me? I sure as hell don’t know. Just go with it, ya big dope.

If not before, Oskar does finally let go when he shakes the Sheriff’s hand. “Well sir, I keep my stuff in the room over the shop. S’just self-interest at work, that way,” he jokes.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

As the conversation goes on, Oskar notices a few sparks rise off Rataji, and pieces it together with the hints of distress in her body language. Is she okay? Somethin’s upset her, it looks like. If she looks his way at any point, Oskar gives her what he hopes comes across as a small, reassuring nod and smile.

Rataji wrote:
"C'mon guys. Let's do this."

Oskar tries to keep his tone light, hoping it will help distract Rataji from what might be troubling her. “Sure, yeah! No one ever got in any trouble poking around a crypt, right?”

Rodrak grins.

"Nah, what is the worst that could happen?"

He then glances around him, looking at the crypt wearily.

"I think we should be able to have a decent go at it, judging that we are all descendents of darkdwellers..." adding under his breath "... not sure that term translates well into common tongue.".

He then pats himself down to double-check all his gear is on him.

"I'm good to go, as I imagine that the crossbow-shop will be closed today on account of gob-issues."

Taj smiles at Oskar and Rodrak's bravado. "Descendents of darkdwellers?" She raises an eyebrow. "I've never heard a Peri or Idyllkin referred to that way. Instead of Snow and I being adapted to the dark, I prefer to think of it as us carrying our own inner light." She shrugs, and then squares her shoulders. "Semantics, I suppose. If the rest of you are ready, let's get this over with."

With the supreme lack of caution the group has grown to know and love about Taj, she steps into the crypt, ready to face whatever it is.

Dead Suns:

The door to the crypt is a heavy affair, with thick cast iron hinges. The lock has been bashed in, splinters sticking out of the door like wooden daggers.
With great effort, the sheriff pulls and holds the door open.

There is no light in the crypt. The light coming from the open door is the only source, and while you see exelent in the darkness, it takes your eyes a moment to adjust from bright daylight to the half gloom.

Just beyond the door, there are a few steps down. The walls of the crypt have spaces for coffins. A lot of the spaces are filled.
On the floor there is a lot of rubble, where it looks like a coffin was smashed. Sharp pieces of wood and nails are strewn about.

Looking up, you find yourself face to face with the grinning face of a skeleton....

Initiative blob:

Round 1

Skeletons: With bones creaking, the skeletons stumble forward. The skeletons are completely clean. No ragged clothes or dried pieces of flesh.
Fingerbones arched into claws, the approach Rataji.

Red approaches, but cant reach Rataji due to difficult terrain.

Yellow walks straight trough the rubble, barely making it due to it slowing it down. A few pieces of wood get stuck between its shinbone and fibula.
claw attack yellow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
claw attack yellow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Its fingerbones scrabble uselessly agains Rataji's armor.

Eldira: Eldira squints in the gloom for a moment. "My knowledge of these creatures is insufficient. For optimal results, someone will need to devise a strategy."
Unsure what to do, but acting being better then not acting, Eldira fires an arrow at Green.

Luckily goblins stink, and there is definitely goblin trails in here.

I'll definitely want to study it later though. Pitty cleaning it might remove evidence...

Ughs.. and tries a sniff on the robe to see if there's human AND goblin or just goblin.

He looks at Rodrak "Your people are the best when it comes to stonework, if you have that kind of time. Any sign of another entrance? "

Dead Suns:

"That would have been Father Tobyn's final resting place. The others missing appear to be Father Dynn, Father Borsje and Father Mandrake. They were the priests before father Tobyn. Looks like whomever it was the four latest priests.
Father Tobyn's coffin is the only one that was smashed."

The sheriff points to the rubble on the floor.

Sniffing the robe deeply, Justin's eyes water from the acrid goblin smell. There is definitely something else in the smell, but the goblin smell gets too overpowering before you can pinpoint it. Maybe some animal?

He points at the three open graves, and the wood rubble of what must have been a coffin on the ground. "You do make a good point. These four skeletons were remarkably clean. All our priests get anointed after death, and wrapped. Even with the older bodies, you would expect some things to still cling to them."

Rodrak searches the room. Its a fairly simple crypt that was build by first digging a hole, then building the room up with stone. Being party underground helps regulate the temperature in the crypt which helps with preservation. The stonework is quite simple and quite old.
With the coffins built into the wall, someone would have been hard pressed to build a secret door in here. You find nothing out of the ordinary.

"That they needed the robe to do this makes me think we're dealing with a no talent dabbler. Still, there's ten thousand places he could be, and only one place he wants to attack, your town. probably your church. How much investigation got done when the last one burned down? "

"Never heard of a fastidious necromancer before. Don't they tend to think of the grunge and whisps of cloth as "atmosphere". Did anyone particularly dislike Father Tobyn? Someone dark, brooding, quiet, and pale maybe? Quiet, the sort no one would ever suspsect. A tragic loss early in their life and a fascination with skulls as decorating objects wouldn't be out of place either. "

He picks up a skull and holds it in an alas poor yorik fashion, and starts trying to re arrange and sort the skeletons

"Not to say all humans look alike but.. well. I don't suppose there's any way to confirm these ARE the bodies they're supposed to be? Were any of them especially tall or short? "

Dead Suns:

With a sigh, the sheriff shifts his weight.
"I had wanted to do this in a more private way. But the townspeople do gossip. So I might just as well do it sooner then later, as you do bring up a good point Justin.
As far as we knew, no one particularly disliked Father Tobyn. He did have two foster children in his care. They were left on the doorstep of the church as babies. Normally orphans get taken to the Turandarok Academy to grow up in the care of the town. But these babies were both touched by the divine. So it was decided they would be raised by father Tobyn and the church.
Boy and a girl, they were raised as brother and sister. As they lived in the church together with father Tobyn, we assumed they both had perished together with their adopted father. We never found a body of both, but the blaze was incredibly hot, as the roof was tarred. It smouldered for days. There was barely anything left of father Tobyn, so it was as a reasonable assumption both bodies had been destoyed. But yesterday, we saw that we had assumed wrong. One of the children was alive, and it looks like he was even unharmed by it all.
So, Snowflake. Can you tell us what happened? Did someone hate your adoptive father?"

"You say 'both touched by the divine', Sherriff. That shows you got a clear head on your shoulders. Even more than me, because even I was convinced like most of the village, that whatever touched me, was totally opposite of whatever touched Nualia. And although I lived a life of being bullied, it was less scarry than what happened to Nualia. Sure I could heal, and I'm still thankful for Father Tobyn Tobyn for spotting that ability in my and making use of it, to make me part of the community. But every one that I healed, went by Nualia, to be touched by her for cleansing. For luck. And Nualia would explain to them that it was foolish, but they would still come by and ask. And it didn't stop there. She couldn't walk down to street without being asked to touch a baby, or a sack of grain for that matter..."

"Nualia didn't had the same kind of panache like you got, Taj, to adjust other people's views"

"It got worse later on. Nualia became more and more a symbol of luck, and less a girl with a life of her own. Me, well, I lost my boyhood chubbyness, my fangs set in and all the other stuff. People still called me Snowflake, because somehow thess things tend to stick when your sister insists on calling you that. No changes there."

Vy glimpses at Rataji

"But it got a more sinister tone. One of my bullies held a theory that I was demon touched, but my mother feared for my chance of surviving in hell, and that's why she left me here. And it was not hard to believe him. Even I thought a was some kind of werewolf when Taj and Pateba found me"

"Sheriff, the reason that I didn't die in the fire was because I was simply not there. After years of being played tricks upon, especially around full moon, I developed a habit to sneak out at night, and sleep in the nearby woods. I felt akin with the animals there, and had a special friend that would come out and help me in times of need, so staying there during the night always soothed and calmed me."

"So when I saw the fire from afar, I rushed back to town, but was shocked to see it was the church burned down with everybody in it. Ecxept me. Now picture me seeing my bullies in the crowd. Now picture them seeing me, unharmed. What more of logical answer to the question of who started the fire could I be? I had a Snowball's change of surviving, yet again."

"So being dead, was a relief and a release. I fled south"

"Where Taj and Pateba found me. And explained what I was"

Dead Suns:

The sheriff pinches the bridge of his nose for a moment.
"Both you and Nualia did not get treated fairly, that is a fact. But your return coinciding with these events are a coincidence I cannot ignore. It might be a cruel prank played by the gods, or you might hold a deeper grudge. I dont know.
For now I'll keep my eye on you and I would advice you not to head off somewhere alone. You are a suspect in all this, I'll tell you that up front."

"Wait a minute." Taj lets go of Vy's hand and walks straight up to the Sheriff, the sparks in her hair flaring fully ablaze. It doesn't matter that the Sheriff towers a full foot over her. "You're saying Vy's a suspect? You asked us for our help, and we delivered! We fought goblins, we defended the town. We went into this creepy-ass crypt even though it brings horrible memories for my brother. We've been there for you and this town." Her fists curl and uncurl. "I don't believe what I'm hearing! There is no one, NO ONE, more kind and gentle than my big brother. He gives and gives and gives of himself. Always putting others first!"

Her hair is now completely flame, burning and smoking and crackling. "How could you? He ran from this town a terrified and lost little boy. He lost everyone and everything. It was a sheer act of bravery to come back here, and now you accuse him?" She blinks. "I had thought that maybe, just maybe, we'd found a place to settle. A place that would accept me and Vy, strangeness and all!" Still shaking, she takes a deep breath, willing the flames to die down. "Keep your eyes on him, and you'll soon learn what I know, deep in my heart. My brother's innocent." Then she turns and grabs Snowflake's hand again. "Come on, Vy. Let's go back to the Rusty Dragon. If this ungrateful town needs us to be heroes again, they'll know where to find us."

Justin looks back and forth between the sherif and the leaving plane touched before settling on the sherrif.

"I'll try to explain it to her. Later. Somewhere fireproof. Away from people" he looks down the road. "FAR away. I'd stay but..erm.. they have that robe I need to study... " and trots off after the pair.

As Oskar and the others hurry after her, Taj turns to them. "Vy's got celestial blood, through and through. Straight from the agathions, gentle angels from Nirvana that take on the animal forms of the wild creatures they love and revere. He's no lycanthrope, and he's never been touched by the powers of hell."

She thumps her chest. "I'm the aasimar with peri blood. These flames? Maybe they're the flames of justice. Maybe they're the flames of redemption. Or maybe they're something else." She frowns. "If those jerks that bullied my brother are still here in town, you better keep me away from them. You have no idea how tempting it would be to give them a little taste of what the fires of hell are really like!"

The fantasy of her bullying the bullies carries her for a moment. She imagines chasing them, completely aflame, telling them that the fires of hell have come to claim them. She imagines them running and screaming, looks of terror on their faces. Then she stops, stricken. This is not what she wants. People fear her enough already. And what would more bullying solve?

She looks down at the ground, suddenly feeling small and forlorn. "This is what it means to be a peri. Occasionally you get dark fantasies, and then you get to squash them down and do the right thing anyway. It sucks you know. Always knowing that you're supposed to do the right thing, even when it's for ungrateful bigots." She turns to Vy, and hugs him. "I'm so sorry about what happened to Nualia, and to Father Tobyn. I'm sorry that this town treated you like crap, and continues to do so. But you know what I'm not sorry about? Having you as a brother. I would not trade you for the world."

"That sounds suspiciously like being anyone else, unless you want to tell me NONE of your kind have ever gone bad?. which is why the sheriff can't rule anyone out. You can't tell me him being back in town on the same day as this town getting attacked by goblins and people raising the dead... and if they were attacked by goblins and raising the dead regularly the town would have actual defenses" he holds up both paws. "I'm not saying that he did it. But The sheriff has to consider the possibility that there's SOME connection and more importantly the town IS going to consider the possibility.. and by consider I mean have the torches and pitchforks ready to go. We need to solve this quickly " he points at the robe. "In the meantime you probably don't want to be walking into town with that....."

While he hurries after the rest, Rodrak seems lost in his own thoughts.

"Family matters... sometimes it is all we have..."

When Justin mentions the robe he perks up and snaps out of it.

"Yes, the robe in your hands could be a complication. Also, if we seek to clear your names we'd better come up with a plan. Let us recoup at the Rusty Dragon and get our bearings."
