Taj's stomach growls at the aroma coming from the Rusty Dragon's kitchen. "Alright, how about some of Ameiko's delicious curry first, and then we can walk around town, taking note of things that might need doing? Big jobs we'll note down and work on tomorrow. Does that sound fair?"

Dead Suns:

Bethana, one of the halflings employed at the Rusty dragon, comes to refill your cups with tea.
"Supper will be ready in a bout half an hour. The bread needs a little bit longer, but I'll bring ya all a plate the moment its finished."

"Oh yeah, nearly forgot." She rummages in her apron pocket for a moment, and takes out a lace handkerchief. It smells sweetly of perfume and a red lipstick kiss has been planted on a corner.
"Ah, I was asked to give this ta you. Looks like ya have got yerself a secret admirer. Pretty lady it was too."

She gives the handkerchief to Oskar with a big fat wink.

"A secret admirer?" Rataji feels a stab of jealousy. She has no claim on Oskar, but after two days of running around town and killing goblins side by side, she's gotten fond of the big guy. He's capable, considerate, funny. Maybe it was her fault, and she should have made a play for him earlier. She'd been dropping hints, but maybe he hadn't picked up on it? Oh, why didn't she kiss him when she had the chance? Her hair smoking, she squeezes Oskar's hand and exclaims in a falsely sweet voice, "How nice! Bethana, you say she's pretty. What did this woman look like?"

Dead Suns:

"Well honey, wat would be the fun in that? Let the handsome young man find out for himself. Ya never know. Ya might have send it to him yourself in secret."

Bethana gives another fat wink before heading off to the next table to refill their drinks.

As the group sits at their table, Oskar listens to Rataji’s plan. It’s a good plan, but Oskar is spending a lot of brainpower trying to figure a way to amend the plan such that he stays at the Rusty Dragon, and guards the casks of brown ale.

He’s so intently staring at the taps across the room that Bethana’s arrival is damn near a complete surprise. As the gnome… gnome? Halfling? She’s got to be one of those, doesn’t she? I always get those two mixed up. They’re so small. She’s not a roshka child, I got that much; her features are all wrong for that. His gaze turns to Justin, at least this Justin fella is pretty distinct-looking for a little guy…

Oskar eventually catches up with Bethana’s comments. “Oh. Oh. Uh, thanks miss. Huh…” Secret admirer. That’s cool, right? How does this work? Taj seems… well, less put out by this than I was gonna guess. Maybe I misread stuff earlier? Well, ain’t like anyone’s sworn to anything here. Just let it play out, I guess.

Oskar’s face animates a bit, as he scans the room, looking for someone whose ears are wriggling. “How does something like this work, any a'you know? I got no idea...”

Taj feels a pang of disappointment as Oskar immediately starts looking through the crowd. Well, what did you expect? He's not your property.

Rataji shifts nervously when Oskar pulls her aside. In her experience, being pulled in to a private talk is usually a prelude to the talk. The one that begins, "Rataji, you're a wonderful girl, but..."

So, when Oskar says his piece, she just slumps for a moment. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you either. Or push you." Flames dying down, she steps away. "I didn't mean to impose, or mess up our heroes-investigatin'-stuff-on-the-sly thing. I... I won't bother you again, I promise, okay?"

“No one said ‘bother’, Taj, and I sure as heck ain’t hurt. Hell, you been nicer to me than just ’bout anyone I’ve met the whole time I been here. I like ya, but I feel like you’re runnin’ ahead of me here.”

Deep breath. After a pause, Oskar continues. "I don't throw five different ingredients in a boiling pot the same time. That's somethin' Nisk does, and that's why he always smells like smoke and draws his eyebrows on with a pencil." Oskar flinches a moment, thinking of the times he’s seen his boss without his eyebrows, and continues. “I ain’t goin’ anywhere, Rataji. Just gimme a little time to get caught up t'you, can ya?”

Then Vy crashes in like the big protector he is. She knows she should be furious at Snow's intrusion, but she can hear the love in Vy's voice. “Win or lose, I hope we have fun trying.”

Dead Suns:

Snowflake and Rataji retire early for the night. Whatever it is that snowflake is doing, he is keeping it secret for now.

Ale is easy to come by in the Dragon. Ameiko serves you all a mug with dinner.
As the evening progresses, your mugs never run empty, as several townspeople buy you a refill. Most dont stick around long. A pat on the shoulder, a heartfelt thank you, and then they are back to their own buisness.
The attack only happened yesterday, altough it feels longer. The atmosphere in the Dragon is subdued. Most people nurture a pint, talking softly, if at all.

Ameiko does her best to make a little bit of time for everyone. A few soft words here. A squeeze of sympathy there.
The ale keeps flowing, but you notice that Bethana starts watering down the ale for some of the patrons.

Eventually the commonroom slowly empties and Ameiko makes some time to sit with you. She has some hard sausage with her and cuts some slices.
"So I've been thinking about it for a bit. If you want to up your status so to speak, there are a couple of things you can do."
Ameiko thoughtfully chews on a piece of sausage. "For most of the patrons here, you're heroes anyway. But I can understand you want to sway some others. Snowflakes return did stir up a lot of memories for people, and not all of them good. Concidering we all thought he was dead..."

Ameiko takes a swig from her ale and composes herself. Its clear that Snowlake pretending to be dead has hurt her.
"So you know the saying it takes a village to raise a child? Well, in the case of sandpoint, it takes a village to raise an orphanage. Years back, the town decided that we would take care of our own, even if it came at a cost. No shipping of the poor children to Magnimar.
Altough once they are old enough, some of them go to Windsong Abbey up the cost. But that is their own desicion. Anyway. If children become orphans for whatever reason, and there is no family present, or cant take care of them, Turandarok academy takes them in and raises them.
Ilosari Gandethus runs the place, with basically help from the whole town. Everyone donates food and clothes when they can, and local craftsmen and merchants gets approached to give the kids apprenticeships. So, you know, they have a future once they leave the academy. Ilosari does get some good help from his friends Veznutt Parooh and Vorvashali Voon. They are all semi-retired adventures. They do a good job."

Ameiko sighs deeply. "With yesterdays attack, it could be that the academy needs to take on some new orphans. Ilosari will be very busy. I think you will earn some serious goodwill here if you give him a hand. You wont need to council heartbroken children. Ilosari will do that. He's good at it. Heart of gold that man. But the other children will need tending, and if you can take that burden from him, it would mean a lot. The academy functions as a general schoolbuilding during the mornings, so you could just help out with lessons if you want."

Draining her mug, Ameiko stands up. "I'll leave you all to think about that. I'm going to turn in. Early morning tomorrow for me. No rest for the wicked."
She give you all a fat wink. "Bethana will be here till closing. She'll help you if you need anything else. Good night everyone."

Trowing her apron on the bar, Ameiko leaves the common room.
With her leaving, you now feel how weary the day has made you. A lot has happened, a lot of it emotionally and it has had its effect on you.

One by one you all turn in for the night.
Strange dreams about bones plague your dreams. They seem to dance upon an altar, before burning to dust. The dust swirls, before beging grasped from the dark by a claw.

In the morning, the dream is barely remembered. You wake feeling rested.

Dead Suns:

Its a fairly easy knowledge local check, so Im giving you all the basic background info for the orphanage.

As families thronged to Sandpoint, the town founders quickly came to realize that they needed somewhere to handle the education of children, to house unfortunate orphans, and to busy older children and keep them from becoming delinquents. The answer was the Turandarok Academy.
Part school, part orphanage, the academy is run by retired adventurer Ilosari. He volunteered to be the academy’s headmaster if he could have the basement of the two-story building to himself.
The town agreed, and today, the rooms below the Academy are almost a museum of the strange things and trophies Ilsoari has collected over his years. He keeps these chambers locked, but the children who attend classes on the ground floor and the orphans who live on the upper floor have countless stories about what’s down there, ranging from a goblin farm to a nest of phantom spiders to the Sandpoint Devil itself.
Although the contents are much less sinister (Ilosari is all too happy to show off his collection of exotic weapons, strange maps, and monster trophies to anyone who asks nicely), the retired adventurer does nothing to dissuade the children’s tales.

Located on main street, its a short walk to the Academy. The two story building is one of the larger ones in sandpoint. Originally build to house several workshop, the business venture for it never got off the ground, and the building was later repurposed.
Its two large front doors stand open, and some of the town kids are hanging out on the steps in front.

Asking about Ilosari, you get directed down a long halway on the ground floor. Left and right you see several large rooms set up as classrooms. The benches and tables dont match.
At the end, a there are two smaller rooms oposite eachther. Once has a sign on the door labeled 'supplies', the other reads 'headmaster'. it has a couple of chairs outside the door.
After you nock, a muffled 'enter'.

Entering, you file into an office. Its more spacious then it appeared to be from the outside, but a lot of it is taken up by bookcases filled with papers.
A desk fills the middle of the room, with a couple of chairs in front.
Ilosari, whom you've met a couple of times before, looks up from a letter. "How can I help you?"

"Erm, well met."

He shuffles uncomfortably.

"Me and my friends thought we'd see where we could help out, with the recent troubles and all. Ameiko suggested that the Academy could use a hand...?"

Taj nods and points to Justin. "He already has tabbed lesson plans. The rest of us are planning to wing it."

She grins. "So, where do we start?"

Dead Suns:

Ilosari looks taken aback for a moment. "Well, that is really kind of you. I am rather busy, with all those Goblins happening and all. Normally I wouldnt let strangers handle the kids. But I know Snowflake from when he was younger. Havent seen a neater handwriting since he attended classes here."

He shuffles some papers. "If you have moment, I'll go get Veznutt, he's teaching class this morning."

Ilosari motions you to stay put while he leaves the office. A couple of minutes he returns with an older Gnome. "Veznutt, these are our sandpoint heroes. They want to help out with the lessons."

Veznutt is a bit portly. Looks like retirement from adventuring is treating him well. He shakes all your hands with enthousiasm.
"Ah, so these are the young whipper snappers who are replacing us old geezers. Very good. This town needs more heroes. Or at least, some heroes who arent as decrepit as us!"
He winks at Ilosary. "So, helping out here too eh? Show me what you got!"

"Hmmm. I could do a treatise on Xin, First ruler of Thassalon, OOO, or maybe, perhaps some 5th dimensional mathematical exercises with a rotating sphere to make pin the tail on the donkey more interesting.... "

Dead Suns:

Veznutt looks at Justin for a moment. "Oh. You're serious. While I would love a good discussion on Xin, and Vorvashali does weird things with math, we're talking about kids here. The younger ones need to learn to read, write and do basic math, while the older ones need simple mathmatic, history and language lessons."

Ilosari nods and chimes in. "Morning is filled with lessons. All the towns kids follow lessons here if they can. In the afternoon they get to go back home to help their parents with work. Not a lot of families can afford to loose a pair of helping hands for a full day. Its five mornings a week. The orphans share the classes with the other kids. We roughly separate them by ages. Most start round five years old where we try to teach them reading and writing first. Later on math.
Most kids drop out round 10. They know how to read, write and do basic math then. Those who have a nack usually pick up an extra language or get on to advanced math. We do offer classes for up to a year or 12. By then most of them are ready to pick up a real job, and they'll learn whatever else they need there. We just do our best to give them a solid start."

Ilosari runs a hand trough his gray hair and sighs. "Most of these kids wont make it out of sandpoint, and that is OK. Adventuring is really not what they make it up to be. Those who have a nack for the arcane can get some extra classes from Vorvashali. Those with a gift for the divine either go to the cathedral here, or up the coast to windsong abbey. Those with... other gifts, can get help from Madame Mvashti."
Ilosari stands up and stretches a bit, as if he's been sitting at his desk for a long time. "I do appreciate the enthusiasm. I think once classes are done, Veznutt and you can go over lesson plans and whatnot. For now, I think we could really use you in helping out some of the kids that are struggling with certain subjects. We dont have the time or the manpower to give private tutoring sessions. But if you are all willing, we have several kids that are lagging behind who would benefit immensely from some one one one time."

"I'd be happy to tutor. I'm good with both history and languages, and can pinch-hit in other areas too."

I wonder if any of the little darlings would want lessons in lock-picking, swordplay or tumbling?

"Snow and Rodrak are very patient, Oskar works in a shop so he's probably really good with math, Eldira understands logic and probability and would probably be a good fit for any budding mathematician. Point the way, and we'll do our best."

Taj puts on her best smile.

Is there anything we have to roll for this? Diplomacy? "Hey kids, learning's fun!" Intimidate? "You better learn or else?" Maybe Vy's handle animal could be useful here. "Sit! Stay!"

"Taj has got the gist of it."

Rodrak agrees, and does his very best to look eager to begin.

Dead Suns:

Veznutt takes you to an empty classroom. "Class is about to start. I'll bring you your students and some excercises they have trouble with."

A moment later, he comes back, carrying a stack of papers. Six kids follow him, four boys, and two girls.

Eldira gets handed a stack of papers first. "So, Ron here is first. He's got trouble with math. He's not one for a lot of words so I think you two will get along. He needs help with his long divisions. He's just not grasping it, and some other way of explaining it would probably help, but I just dont have the time to try different ways. Good luck."
The stack of papers contains some of Ron's earlier tries with long divisions. Most of them are wrong.
Reluctantly, Ron walks over. He appears to be about 10, with close cropped brown hair and a few freckles around his nose. He stares at his shoes shyly.

Rodrak gets a stack second. "Alika here has some trouble with languages. She's of native varisian stock, and doesnt speak anything else at home. She's made some good progress with her common, but could really use some help with her verbs. Common is a second language for you too, so maybe you can help her overcome some of the pitfalls of the language."
The stack of papers contain verb excersizes. Alika is clearly of varisian stock. Slender as a rod, you guess her to be maybe 8. Het long black hair is made up in a classical varisian do.
"Hellow mistar. I am Alika. Good to meet youw." She has a slight accent, and looks at you with unmasked curiosity.

Justin get the third stack. "So Zando here is another one in need of math. I know you thing we coddle them, but not everyone is born a genious of has a natural aptitude. He's one of the older kids we have, and he's got a good chance he can get an apprenticeship with the woodworkers. He's got a nack for that, makes nice carvings. But its not going to work out of we cant get him working with practical math, calculating things in three dimensions. So give him lots of practical examples all right?" Veznutt gives you a stern look and hands you a sheaf of exercise papers.
Zando is the oldest child in the room, 12, maybe thirteen. He's already got calluses on his hands from working.
He takes of his cap and holds it in his hands. "Hello mister. I'm Zando. Nice to meet you." He clearly doesnt know what to make of a ratfolk.

Fourth goes to Rataji. "Ah yes, young Val here needs some help with her reading. Two syllable words went ok, but now that we're at three syllables, we've encountered trouble. Its hurt her self esteem more then anything else. So please pay more attention to what she does right, then what she does wrong."
The stack of papers contains reading exersizes. Simple half page stories made up with simple words.
Val is young, six you would guess. She's got blond hair to her shoulders, and she nervously sucks on a strand of hair when introduced.

Veznut goes to Snowflake fifth. "Our former student. Good to see you young Snowflake. And just in time. Ion has trouble with writing. Its not that he doesnt know the words. He just cant write very well. Please observe his exersizes so hopefully we can find out the underlying problem. Once we know that, we can adress it and hopefully right it."
You get some examples of Ion's former work, and Veznutt was not kidding. The handwriting is atrocious. The rest is blank paper, that helpfully have some pre-drawn lines to help with writing straight.
Ion looks about 8, and looks like a real sandpoint native. Half varisian, half chelaxian of origin.
"Woah, you're all those people. From the square. You kicked so much goblin ASS!"
He's clearly in awe with all of you. His remark of 'ass' gets a warning from Veznutt.

Oskar gets the sixth and last stack of papers. "Dennis needs help with his adjectives. So far the easiest I would say, as I've had already pepared extra exersizes he could take home with him. But a private session where he can ask questions would do wonders Id say. So here you go." And Veznut gives you a fat stack of paper. Half of it is completed exersizes so you have something to work from, the other half is new exersizes.
Dennis looks to be Ion's friend. He gigles at the word 'ass' when Ion blurts it out.
"Ion's right isnt he mister Oskar? I saw you to and you splashed those Gobs good!"

Veznutt adresses you all one last time. "Ok children, be good. These nice people will teach you this morning. I'll still come to pick you up for halfway break."
And with that he leaves to herd the other children into the adjacent classroom.

Taj grins to Val. "If we're going to be reading stories, is it okay if we sit on the floor and lean against the wall as we do it? I'm not going to fit in your desk! Now... How do we want to do this? Do we want to take turns reading the story? When I was learning to read, my Dad taught me all sorts of tricks for sounding words out. I'd be happy to share some of those with you as we go!"

Dead Suns:

Eldira's tutoring session goes all right. She spots the points where Ron starts to slip up easily, but its hard to discern what is causing him to slip up in the first place.
But with the extra coaching, he finishes a good amount of exercises and at the end of the morning he seems more confident in his abilities.

Alika seems to like Rodrak. The fact that he speaks with an accent too seems to resonate with her. You finish several speech exercises. You identify a few sounds she has trouble with, but spot no underlying problems.

Justin and Zando have a bit of a rocky start. The level of the exercises are fairly easy, and Justin manages to get himself worked up about them. Frustration seems to feed frustration, and Zando is about ready to throw down his quill when you get a breakthrough. You realize that Zando doesnt have a problem with imagining 3D in itself, but more the angle of approach. Once you figure that out, and start presenting the pictures as part of a whole, he catches on much quicker.

Val *loves* taking turns. She is still at the stage that she still says every syllable separately, before forming the whole word. By the end of the morning, she's reading better. You have no idea why she has trouble. It might just be that she needs more exercise. But Val does seem to have gotten a lot more confidence in herself.
She also seems quite captivated by Rataji's hair.

Snowflake and Ion get along great. Ion does need to be coaxed back towards his exercises a few times but he listens everytime Snowflake corrects him.
A few exercises in it becomes clear that Ion has trouble with writing letters that look too much alike in a worde. An i and l next to each other gives him trouble. O and A, O and U, V and W, and so on. You manage to make good improvements by letting him focus on one letter at a time. As soon as he focuses ahead on what he still needs to write, opposed to what letter he is writing now, a lot of mistakes slip in, making some words illegible.
By the end of the morning you've made good progress.

Dennis needs some focussing. He's clearly in awe of Oskar, and its distracting him in his work. You easily spot where he goes wrong, but cant pinpoint the why. Of course, being an easily distracted kid doesnt help.
You manage to finish several exercises, and Dennis does seem to enjoy working with you.

Halfway trough the morning, there is a 20 minute break where the kids can eat and drink. They all get together in one of the big classrooms, and wolf down their food.

At noon, classes are dismissed. A few kids leave immediately, needing to help out at home, but most stick around.
As soon as Veznutt's back is turned, the kids mob the group. "Did you smash the goblins? Where did they come from? How strong are you? Did you really stab a dragon? Is it hard to get off all the blood? Were you scared? I heard you bit a goblins head off."
Its an endless stream of questions.

Taj grins as the little girl stares at her hair. "I think yours is pretty too! Would you like me to braid it? I can do your hair up like a coronet, or in an intricate plait, Galtan-style."

When the kids gather round, Taj laughs. "I did not bite a goblin's head off... Ew! Can you imagine that getting stuck in your teeth? However, Rodrak here... He tossed an ENTIRE grocery cart at one. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen!"

" and the ratfolk pops from one side of the table to the other.

Justin answers the kids questions in a very strairforward, practical manner with no tact, which he obviously considers sugar coating.

"No that was the first time

"I punctured the lung he started wheezing and fell over.

Dead Suns:

While the kids seem interested in Justin as a ratfolk, his storytelling is clearly not as exciting. So while they want to touch his tail and stroke his fur, the exitcement soon gets redirected to Rataji.

Val gets her hair braided first, and you think she might explode from exitcement. The coronet that gets braided is immediately the center of attention of the other girls. Soon a line forms, as they all want such a cool hairdo. While the girls sit cross legged in front of Rataji, the questions continue. (from the girls and the boys)

"Where did you all come from? Have you been to magnimar? Did you ever see a dragon? A WHOLE grocery cart? Is it true you resqued mister Foxglove? Are you a goblin hunter?"
