I've got a +12 toughness save going on. It's not backed by a big melee orientation like a typical tank, but he's got a chance against above-PL hits.

Philo, I hadn't even looked at most others' abilities, but yes, it does look like insubstantial is a theme.

I've got some other ideas. Do you think it would be beneficial to maybe use one of those? Some of them are quite tanky. I'll just have to come up with backstories for them.

I'm pretty sure Straightjacket is tanky enough.

I'm pretty tanky as well! Rather than one meatshield, you've got ten!

I'm not tanky, but for a middle aged scientist I can take a surprising beating.

Oh I wasn't saying Squishy can't tank. I'm just saying that I expect either only one insub character to make it or to have a whole team. It would have some advantages getting into places.

You saying this team needs a tank? I could look at something like that for my submission...

My justification is that Miss Meow was wearing her summer costume when she arrived. You know, a silk costume which is not armored, thus relying on her speed and agility to avoid being hit. Her regular armored costume, and crisis power armor are both back in her original dimension, in the Kitty Kave. Hey, give her a break. She was seven.

That said, she could have body armor, but it's at the expense of her other utility belt gear. Things like her bolos and healing stim injectors can't be used if she has her armored costume

Dark Archive

Oh, as for having the water form be default... I'd suggest looking at Alternate Form and the flaw Always On.

Dark Archive

I just finished tweaking a second power setting for my Crime Fighting Equipment variable power. Initially I was envisioning it as the Adam West batman's utility belt of Convenient Plot Devices. But now I'm thinking it's specific equipment loadouts she takes out into the field. The first one is her normal costume and a utility belt. The second one is basically her powered Crisis armor. Basically Miss Meow's version of Batman's power armor. An armored costume that gives Toughness 4 (is not Impervious), an extra +2 to Strength, a grapple gun, and a rocket assisted glide pack. 15 PP doesn't go very far after all.

Background: Antoine 'Tony' Collins was born into a family of wealth. He grew up with the best of everything. Then, it all came crashing down. His parents died in a plane crash, and the bank took everything because of debts they owed. Being 16, running away (or 'escaping' as he called it) from a foster home and left pretty much broke, he found himself on the streets where things didn't exactly seem like a jewel (or even a Cubic Zirconia for that matter). One night when he and several others were bunking down inside an abandoned warehouse in order to get out of the cold night air, his life changed again.

Tony awoke to see four men dragging a fifth one to the back of the warehouse. Curious, Tony followed them. When they dropped him on top of some boxes, covered him with more boxes and stepped back. One of the men snapped his fingers and a jet of flame leaped out and started the boxes burning. Tony stood stunned as the men left quickly, leaving the fire burning higher and higher. Realizing he was the only one who could help the man, he rushed forward, to try to pull the man to safety. As he did, he noticed that the back wall was burning too and ready to collapse. The man was heavy, so it took Tony a bit to get him far enough away. By the time he did, the entire back half of the warehouse was engulfed in fire.

Lifting the man over his shoulders in a fireman's carry, Tony stumbled back toward where the others had been bedded down. To his amazement, they were still asleep, unawoken by the approaching fire. Something inside him clicked at that moment and in his disbelief, he *shouted* with his mind directly into theirs, trying to wake them. When he did, he could feel a lingering energy of something else that had caused them to stay asleep, but his mental outburst had brushed it off and they began waking and panicking. The heavy man, who somehow Tony knew was named Salvatore, began to stir too, wondering what was going on. As The flames closed in around everyone, Tony pushed outwards against the fire and the walls of the warehouse. Suddenly a path opened and the wall to the building exploded outward, giving everyone a chance to escape.

Tony hurriedly helped the man he'd rescued out, much easier now that the man was awake and walking. As they got outside with the others, they just stared as the building began to collapse right where they had been. To all the others, Tony's shout have been audible, waking them just in time. To the heavyset man though, Tony was the lifesaver and it called for a reward. Tony refused anything more than what it would take to get him back on his feet, independant and something to live on while he went to school. The man agreed and set him up with a trust fund and an apartment near the school.

After seeing what he'd seen and what he'd done, Tony knew there was something going on with him and with the men who'd left Salvatore to burn. Sal had taken care of helping him stand, now it was Tony's turn to run ahead and explore his new abilities. What he was going to do with them he had no idea, but as luck, or perhaps fate would have it he would have help choosing his path and learning his abilities.

*Note: Growing up, Tony's father had always told him how special he was. What Tony didn't know is that his father had made a deal with someone to oversee testing of a new designer drug that was supposed to stimulate the senses and enhance the perceptions. As a result, he treated his pregnant wife without her knowing. When it didn't seem to have any effect, he increased the dosages until it did. By that time, it had been in his mother's system for so long, that it had an unexpected effect on Tony before he was born. Already inclined toward being a mutant, the drug changed his mental 'wiring', allowing him to manifest his powers at some point. However, he'd never been put in a position where enough adrenaline was pumping through his system to kickstart his powers. Should he now be exposed to the same or a newer, more refined version the interactions with his abilities could have a major impact.

I also have an idea for a tank if no one wants to go that route. :)

@Samnell - I'm partial to the name Hydronaut. Also, for your elemental form, just add the Permanent flaw to your Alternate Form.

@Rigor - I'd love to see a street-level mage type!

Also, what city should this be set in? Metropolis? Gotham? Center City? Star City? Blüdhaven? Another? Or perhaps one of our own devising?

There's always Charm City...

Dark Archive

Or Keystone as well. Setting it an a well established city could provide ready to use villains, but it might be interesting to have a new location with some new villains in addition to existing villains. Miss Meow is from Gotham, but has spent a lot of time fighting crime in both Metropolis and Central City too. But with her in a new dimension (or possibly just an alternate timeline) she could be anywhere now.

one of the gem cities.

Jim lived and worked in Central City, but his backstory has him moving to wherever the team is headquartered, so he has no limits.

Hydronaut or Typhoon (it's one of those two) is from Coast City, but he's very mobile.

I'll see if I can work in permanent power for the alternate form. I know it's cost-neutral by itself but I'd like him to have some ability to look like a 90% normal person. I know a Morph effect can do it, but that's five points to dig up somewhere. :)

How about adding Always On to your alternate form. Then you can have another alternate form that's cosmetic only (original appearance) that has a duration of Concentration? This way you can appear normal, but it's an effort of will.

Alternately, is it possible to have a one way transformation into your liquid form? This way you have to do something specific to return to your normal form. Such as possibly having to take a special formula that must be mixed up fresh each time due to the active ingredients going inert within minutes of being mixed together.

My street mage will be from Gotham, but again, he will settle where the team settles.

How much time do we have to finish up our character submissions? I've got most of my fluff figured out, but in still working on the crunch.

I didn't see Always On or One-Way Transformation in the Hero SRD, though I recognize them from 2e. I can get the Permanent flaw, but I don't know if putting a permanent power into an array is legal. It feels against the spirit of things, at least.

The effect I'm shooting for, if I can manage, is that his liquid body is his default state. He sleeps as water, etc. But he can look like himself with some degree of conscious effort. I think Morph's sustained duration can get me there. He'd still be water inside, but look mostly like himself. If he gets knocked out, he flips back.

I think this would do the trick:

His Old Self Morph 1 (Flaws: Quirk [hair is always wavy and sea blue, irises show wave patterns the same color] flat -1, Activation [move action] flat -1) 3pp. Or Activation can be a standard action for -2, bringing the cost down to 2pp.

Dark Archive

What you'd do is the Alternate Form power it's self is Always On. This is where you have your intangibility and any attribute changes. Then you do any other water based powers as a separate array. You could then presumably create his "original form" however you like, giving it the Duration: Concentration flaw. If you desired, you could also add a Power Loss flaw to the array so that those powers are unavailable when shifted into your human appearance.

Mind you, not sure if one way transformation is available in 3rd edition. I've used it in 2nd edition for sure.

*experiments and frowns*

Hmm, looks like you need to use a complication to have an alternate form be "always on" now. But you CAN have your normal appearance as an Alternate Effect via alternate form. This would prevent you from using any powers while in the alternate form. Which is in it's self a drawback.

OK...count me as interested! I've got a couple of days to put something together.

The Great Kreminski

Long Version:
Igor Kramenski was at one time a promising young stage magician. He traveled most of eastern Europe seeking out the best masters of the craft; circus masters, renowned but unassuming street buskers, charlatans and showman. He became highly adept at figuring out the tricks, determining how the stunts were accomplished. Once he had figured out how the tricks worked, he would practice tirelessly until he could imitate it flawlessly. He dreamed of a time when he would be famous, a magician of great renown.

It was during these times that he saw a show put on by The Great Zatara. For the first time, he saw “magic” that he could not immediately figure out, and therefore had no chance of imitating. He spent as long as he could seeing the show, taking in every performance he could afford, all the while trying to find a way to meet the Master himself. Try as he might, no method gained him access, from playing the role of can and asking, to sneaking in after hours. Before long, the show departed, and Kreminski was left without money or any way to follow.

Working for a few months busking in the show’s absence, he earned enough to make his way to Romania, to try and seek out Zatara at his home. It was only upon arriving that he learned Zatana's rarely visited his ancestral castle, but had long made his home in the USA.

Broke and despondent, he decided to break into the castle and uncover Zatana’s secrets. What he saw inside shocked him to the core, and nearly killed him. However, he came away with a prize; a book of magic!

While the book was rudimentary, like the equivalent of a children's instruction book, it opened his mind to new things he had never imagined possible.

The next few years were spent in study, first mastering the child's guide, and then using his new knowledge of magic to identify other genuine books of magic among the junk and dross cluttering antique bookstores. Although he experienced more than a few mishaps, and a few severely close calls, he gained a remarkable degree of competence with spellcraft.

One of his most interesting was an attempt to master a spell to awaken a familiar spirit. He was practicing the preparation for the spell when he felt a surge of understanding, like he truly understood this spell in a way he hadn't with any other yet. Fearing the power and the understanding would fade and be forgotten if not used, he cast about for the nearest creature that might be suitable to the spell. The only thing he could see was a large cockroach infesting the dive hotel he was residing in at the time. He ended up naming the creature Gregor Samsa, as sort of morose tribute to his studies. In the days that passed, he often thought that while a roach would not have been his first choice (or second, or third), the little bug proved himself a valuable and intelligent aid, confidante, and in a strange way, a friend.

After the passage of enough years that he felt confident in his powers, he felt ready to seek out Zatara. His magic was strong enough that he could confront the man that had inspired him. His skills were sure to impress the one that had refused to even meet him all those years prior. He would convince the man to take him as his apprentice, or perhaps he would even best him outright, and prove himself a powerful magi.

Unfortunate, when he arrived in America this time, he learned that Zatara had recently died. How was spotty; everything from natural causes to an accident, to fighting demonic evils aside the Justice League of all things were put forward as explanations.

Kreminski was crushed. Having worked toward this eventual confrontation for so long, it had never even occurred to him that Zatara would not be there when he was ready. He spent some small time searching for answers to the riddle of Zatara’s death, but found his heart was not in it. It was in this vein that he found himself in Gotham city, distracted and taken entirely by surprise but a common mugger with a gun.

He thought of a hundred spells that would put this misanthrope in his place, and was still trying to decide which he would use when the thug shot him in the head.

What, you thought this story was about Igor Kreminski? Sorry, he's dead. The real hero of this story is his faithful friend and companion Gregor, the cockroach.

You see, after his lifelong friend and former master Igor was killed, Gregor was rather put out. What was he to do? Go back to being an ordinary cockroach? While that might actually be an option, as he could probably figure out the spells needed to remove the investiture, it didn't seem like a fair way to remember his Master’s legacy. How to do him credit, and find something worth doing?

The answer occurred to him before long, that the best way to serve his departed friend was to do away with the kind of scum that had killed him. That way he could demonstrate the power and skills Kreminski had commanded in life (and taught to him), but also right the wrong that his untimely death had presented.

Of course, mortal laws and morality were as confusing as hell to Gregor, but he was sure he could figure them out. First, he'd need a durable shell to use… something that would serve as transportation and protection, since roaches weren't exactly built to take on primordial foes. Well, Igor appeared to be done with his body, so a touch of zombification and the vehicle issue would be solved. He'd need room to ride around inside, but if he cleared out the brains and organs there would be plenty of room for someone his size in there, and as an extra benefit, he wouldn't need to go looking for food for weeks! Jeeze, this hero thing was going to be a snap!

TL:DR (The Short Version):
Igor Kreminski was Polish orphan that desired to be a great stage magician. While seeking out masters of the craft to study and duplicate their tricks, he saw a show by Zatara, and for the first time saw things that he could not explain unless magic were real. Thus began an obsession with learning the secrets of real magic. Along the way, he created a powerful familiar, almost by accident. It was a cockroach, the only creature near him while he was practicing the spell, but despite the choice of animal, he proved loyal and intelligent. Igor named him Gregor Samsa, perhaps in an effort to be ironic. After years together, Igor got himself killed by a mugger in a dark alley, leaving Gregor to fend for himself. Not wishing to return to his previous career as an apartment infesting vermin, he decided to use his magic to fight bad guys like the one that had killed his master. Of course, being a roach, his understanding of good and bad guys was a little fuzzy, but he figured he knew the basics. Seeing how Igor was done with his body, he applied litle zombification, hollowed out the brain cavity so he could have room to ride inside (time consuming, but delicious work), and a hero was born! ish…

Gregor Samsa

The crunch is a work in progress, as I'm finalizing a few details, and working to format them for the profile.

The pitch:
Well, if you've read the background(s) above you may see what I have in mind here. I really have a strong love for atypical characters. As soon as I started thinking about a mage, my mind started trying to figure out a way to make it a completely different, if not totally bizarre, take on the concept. I figured a fun way to do a mage would be to have a familiar, no longer attached to his original master, basically posing as a mage would be much more interesting. The rest of the concept came together from there.

The character is intended to be a bit strange, with elements of the usual fish out of water aspect of not knowing the ins and outs of why an action is considered right or wrong, but wanting to contribute nonetheless. For character motivations, I think Gregor will be channeling a bit of Plankton, Bender, Bob the Skull of Dresden Files fame, and perhaps a touch of Gru.

I like this idea, and think it would be hella fun, but if you would rather a more traditional magic using hero, I have ideas for that as well. Let me know what appeals to you.

Ok...I may have to rebuild my M.I.N.O.T.A.R. concept.

(Mechanized Intelligent Non-Organic Tactical Assault Robot)

Concept: Basically a brick type with some soldiery skills and AI robotic stuff.

Still working on my pitch - have drawn on lore of Blockbuster's life (and death) - throwing in some stuff relating to Brimstone as well.

She's now named Temper - an elemental brick.

Project MINOTAR

Here's the basics on MINOTAR. I'm pretty sure my points are way off somwhere, but the Contruct ability to ignore Fortitude seems to change things in various places and I can't fathom the correct answers with just the SRD in time. So please, just let me know where I'm going wrong here if you have a moment.

I plan to flesh out the backstory more later, but just haven't had the time, and time is running out on the recruitment.

Constructive Comments are very welcome.

Any is fine by me. MINOTAR can come out of anywhere.

I have here a thanagarian Warrior who came to earth after Thanagar was conquered by the gordanians. If we are using the DCAU cannon it would be after JL pushed the thanagarian armada off earth or if not it just happened anyway.

Rhian has come to earth mostly because I doesn't know what to do with his life. He had been fighting his entire life and now all of a sudden he doesn't have a cause to fight for. For a time he became he gladiator but eventually he moved on trying to find for himself what he could do. He has come to earth only recently and is very unaccustomed to earth culture.

Good Luck everybody!

Here's the origin pitch of Temper (Black Dow's submission) - have (loosely) tried to tie it into some DC-mythos.

Been a brutal week at work, so still working on finalising the crunch, but thought it more important to let you see my inspiration.

Profile is a placeholder for the crunching.

Temper: Backstory:

Daria Desmond was like her father, Mark Desmond, in so many ways… and yet not. He had lived in the news reports and headlines as the brutish villain Blockbuster, and had died as a forgotten hero at the hand of fiery titan Brimstone.

Growing up in the small mining town of Bleak Rock, West Virginia you could say the earth was always in her blood. A bright student, Daria had shown the same aptitudes for science as her father, but rather than focussing on his field of chemistry she had indulged in a childhood passion for rocks and geology.

She was always aware her father was different… He was massive, strong as ten men and possessed a simplistic view of the world. Yet as much as proud as she was of him, the old journals and research papers fascinated her even more. As a young girl they were merely pretty patterns, on bundles of coloured paper. When she asked her father about them he would grow frustrated, clearly recognising them but no longer able to articulate the higher thoughts they represented.

It was in those times that Daria caught a glimpse of the raw anger that had made her father such a brutally effective tool for real villains to exploit. Her mother had not hidden the story of Blockbuster from her… and while she was saddened by what he had endured, she was also driven to be as good a daughter as the good man he had become. Miner, caretaker and protector of Bleak Rock. Blockbuster was now a big hero in his own small way. And he too needed protection from those who would seek to use him again… a protection that came in the night… wearing the cowl of the bat.

Daria only met the Batman once. Her father introduced her when she overheard them talking… Wreathed in shadow he was a forbidding figure, but she never felt scared… The Batman had spoken quietly telling her “Remember child - The Blockbuster is dead. He died in a dark mine shaft ... and when he reached the light, he was reborn… A better man.”

Her mother would smile when Daria would recount the story (again and again).

As Daria grew into her teens her passion for science became ever more voracious. Her hard work bore fruit she was offered a surprise internship at the Thomas Wayne Foundation. While their she delved more into her father’s past and his research - which in turn drew her into meta-physical disciplines as much as her geo-sciences.

Until everything changed. Until Brimstone..

She remembered watching it on the news. A fiery giant named Brimstone facing off against countless government metahumans. The first line of defence. The Suicide Squad the news had called them. And they died at the titan’s hands. First to fall… the man mountain named Blockbuster…

He had died once before in an old mine. That was a poetic death. This was not. Burned alive by fire and Brimstone.

She remembered her mother crying, the sad faces of friends and neighbours at his funeral. Yet Daria did not mourn his passing for it lit a fire inside her…

She vowed not to be her father. And yet in his death she found her inspiration to be exactly like him. Blockbuster was dead, but the research she had done, the advances science had made showed showed that his heroism could live again. Daria had his formula. She had the drive to be a hero… she just needed his DNA to complete the sequences and her new Blockbuster compound would be complete.

So it was that in her lab at the University that she imbibed the new serum-compound. What she had failed to take into account was the residual plasma magnate imbedded into her father’s scorched DNA. The fiery heart of Brimstone.

When the serum burned through her veins and transformed her body - Daria become something else. Not Blockbuster. Yes she was strong and tall, but her skin was a tough mantle and her blood now molten. The fire of the serum had fortified her into something else… Temper was born.

Time to get any last-minute submissions in, folks.

I'll finish up my submission as soon as possible. Was having a lot of fun with the concept, but of course, work and life got in the way of finishing up. Hopefully I'll have it done before selection occurs, but if not, rest assured I can be ready quite quickly if selected.

Going with Hydronaut for the name and keep the stats as posted to keep things simple and right at 120.

Looking forward to seeing the shake-down.

WhtKnt et al. I'm going to pull out of the running on this one - not sure i'll have the time to really hammer out the crunch to befit my mind's eye concept for Temper

Okay, this is the part that I hate; telling people they didn't get in. I could do this by PMing only those who made it, but that's chintzy, in my opinion. You deserve to know face-to-virtual face (as it were).

All of the concepts were great and I would be proud to take any of you. If you didn't make the cut, please don't feel that it was because your concept was bad. I chose those I think that will work best together and will make for an interesting dynamic. It was a very difficult decision and one that I agonized over for a good part of the morning.

The eight selectees are (in no particular order):
Miss Meow
Ghost
Straightjacket
Electron
QNetic
Hydronaught
M.I.N.O.T.A.R.
Isikos

Would the eight of you please report to the play thread. To the rest of you, I say "Good job!" You made my decision process difficult, which is no small feat.

SOrry for the absence. Got sucked into Sims 3 for a bit. Uhm, the gameplay link is leading to the Online Campaigns top page. So, where IS the play thread

If anyone is interested, we appear to have an opening or two. I'll give preference to those who applied previously, but if you are interested, sound off.

Characters are PL 8. I'm not going to be terribly strict with points. Try to stay around 120, but if you need a few extra, feel free to take them. Just be sure that it fits your concept and that you observe the campaign PL level.

This is set in the DC Universe, using the "classic" DC heroes, as described in the Heros & Villains books. Consider this one of those "alternate Earths" that you hear so much about, such that it is unaffected by the mainstream comics universe (since I stopped collecting years ago).

You are an up-and-coming hero team, sponsored by the Justice League. If you wish to be "inspired" by one of them, that's fine, but don't feel obligated to create junior Justice League members. The League will allow you to handle situations as you see fit, intervening only if it becomes apparent that lives are in danger. You should NOT expect them to bail you out, however. If you screw up, the consequences are on you.
