Also I've found it useful to put the Hit Point rolling convention for your game on the Campaign Info tab as well.

Question about 'average' - all classes have even hit dice, average is always an X.5 number. Do you round up, down, or truncate for average? (Basically, Bank average, school math average, or truncate?)


Can you explain further? I seem to be having trouble figuring out were the X.5 part is coming from.

The "average" result of a die roll of 1d6 would be (1+2+3+4+5+6)/6, or 21/6, or 3.5; for 1d8, 4.5; for 1d10, 5.5 and so on. There's a whole lot of :math: that goes into the process, but what it boils down to is that the average roll of an X-sided die is X/2 +0.5

WARNING: Math.:

An X sided die has as its probable outcomes a sequence of (1, 2, 3... X-2, X-1, X).

As a very clever person discovered while trying to avoid a boring arithmetics assignment, you can pair the numbers off thusly: (X+1), (X-1 +2), (X-2 +3)... And so on, and you wind up with (X/2) times the equivalent of ([X+1).

So the total will be (X/2) * (X+1) which you can rewrite as (X * (X+1))/2, or (X^2 +X)/2.
To get the average from that, you divide by X and end up with (X^2 + X)/ 2X), which simplifies to (X+1)/2...

X/2 is the average I'm talking about.

So 6/2 = 3 + 1 sea witch average.
Or 12/2 = 6 + 1 for a barbarian.

I will expand on this more a little later.

It's half your HD plus 1. Math aside, it's the core rulebook standard for levelling up without rolling. ;)

Right, sorry about that. Wanted to clarify what Alivia was talking about and my inner math geek refused to stop nagging me until I wrote it out.

Sorry to cause a math interlude :)

The average of any dice roll is equal to (min roll + max roll)/2. For example, 1d6 = (1+6)/2 = 3.5, 2d4 = (2+8)/2 = 5, etc.

Therefore all hit dice are (1+N)/2 which always results in a number with a 0.5 at the end - that's why I put in X.5 (X was my placeholder for 'any number').

Hence my question about 'average' since my 1d6 becomes 3.5, Sharice's 1d12 becomes 6.5, etc. Which you answered with, effectively, truncate the 0.5, but then add 1 which effectively results in 'round up' :D

anyone in black border red text will be hard to persuade If not impossible. HIGH rolls like what Lucia did are about all that will move them back into "easier range". (The target was black background with red text when you started.)

Yeah, I got that impression. Of course, with that big a bonus I decided to push my luck. It may take some time and effort, and we probably won't get all the crew, but anyone hostile we can convert will be a big help later.

Scourge and Plugg are likely a lost cause.


I figured as much but wanted to clarify just in case.

I swear if I keep rolling these awful rolls I'm gonna multiclass as Antipaladin, change my alignment to Chaotic Evil and just start burning stuff.

It's just heartbreaking.

I'm with you, kid; I neglected that clerics are starved for skill ranks when I rolled up my sheet. If the dice don't start liking me soon I'm verging on reneging on my decision not to dip into rogue and proceed to stab everything.

Everything's fine now, we're doing better. It wasn't completely unexpected.

On the plus side, I've just rolled the first three 20s in a row in my life, though it would've been better if we were fighting a dragon (are we using instant kill rules?)
