Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

The Blakros Museum rises into the night sky, its single black spire severing the full moon in twain. The black iron gates surrounding the exhibition hall grind in protest against the wind. Beyond, the museum’s large oaken doors stand wide open, a silver-gray mist belching forth from the cavernous darkness within.

You wonder how you ended up here, standing at the precipice of unknown terrors, and instantly Venture-Captain Adril Hestram’s wide looming face is conjured into your minds’ eye. Likewise, you now see the initial looks on the faces of each of your fellow agents, appearing as they were nearly an hour ago when you were all first assembled.

Yes! This scenario begins with a flashback!

Adril Hestram? But wasn't he...:
*Shhhhhhhh*. Yes, he was. But, we don't like to talk about it. (If it makes you feel better, assume that the wide looming face is one of the many disguises of a certain, other Venture-Captain.)

he smiles when Khellek mentions the Shining Crusade, "Really? Well then I hope that exhibit is still up, I would be especially interested in it." Maybe this museum trip will be fruitful after all?

As written, the scenario starts with the PCs in front of the museum, then provides flavor text flashing back to the briefing with the Venture-Captain.

My next post will be the briefing. However, I will leave it up to the players as to whether they want to describe their initial meeting before the briefing or, as has already been done, their thoughts and actions outside the museum.

In the meeting room with the Venture-Captain:

Kyra is the silent type but her attire shows that she is a cleric of the sunflower.

"I usually travel with my fellow group of adventurers but am very happy that I can be of assistance to the society. Let me tell you a little about myself as knowing each other is the first step to bond and fight together!" she says with a stern look.

Kyra tells you a little about her recent adventures and it is quite clear that she is possessed of a fierce will and pride in her faith and skills with the scimitar.

To those at the Blakros museum:

Travail stands a bit apart from the group, keeping to the shadows as the full moon allows. His companions catch a glimpse of the many weapons he carries.

He breaks his usual silence to share his thoughts. "My friends had to clear out some trouble in the basement once. The Blakros lot deal in some dangerous curiosities. I'm not a fan."

A shiver goes up Travail's spine.

Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

With the flash back playing with time anyways, I suppose there is no harm in posting now, in the interest of getting things started, even though all the PCs have not yet appeared.

The Venture- Captain’s wide looming face is conjured into your minds’ eye. His booming words ring out from memory as clearly as he spoke them only one hour ago:

“The Blakros Museum is cursed. Some darkness has descended upon the place and those who enter are blasted with evil and left raving through its halls, more beast than men. The curator, Nigel Aldain, is an old associate of the Society, though he chose to leave our organization some years back after a disagreement.” Adril looked sheepish then, as if remembering some distasteful incident from his youth.

“Nigel has long denied the Society access to the Blakros Museum’s considerable collection of relics and scrolls, using his extensive contacts to nab several excellent finds right out from under us... he always had a nose for the hunt. Whatever is past between Nigel and the Society, he needs our help now. Perhaps if we can come to his aid, he may think on rejoining the Pathfinder Society, or at least offering to share his discoveries with us.”

“Apparently the trouble at Blakros Museum began this morning, shortly after a wayward Pathfinder named Lugizar Trantos returned to Absalom after months spent in the Mwangi Expanse. Supposedly, instead of coming straight to the Lodge to report in, he went to Blakros, sold his finds to Nigel, and then disappeared with a hefty sum of gold. The few who glimpsed Lugizar claimed he was much changed by his time in the Mwangi... gaunt, his eyes yellowed and unfocused, a strange rasping cough that seemed to wrack his now wasted frame. Whatever he brought back with him, we believe it is the cause of the Blakros Museum’s ills. Root it out.”

Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

The crisis befalling the Blakros Museum occurred right quite recently. The situation and little time remains for them to research or investigate the incident.

The Venture-Captain insisted that there was no time for questions, but presented you with a map of the museum and suggested that you head to the offices first to find Nigel as he may have some insight into whatever foul curse vexes the place. Otherwise, you have been forced to proceed with the information you already possessed.

Knowledge (history) (DC 10+):
Much of the Mwangi’s darkest interior worships a demon lord named Angazhan, who is described in the Book of the Damned as a thing of primordial darkness, a foul-breathed demon who grunts prophecies of blood to apes and madmen. The jungle is his beating heart.

Knowledge (history) (DC 15+):
In addition to the above, you know that the Gorilla King’s dread city was founded hundreds of years past by cultists who bowed to Angazhan. It is said they captured the souls of monkeys in the wood-grains of strange idols called Tik Taan. The monkeys’ tormented spirits became the slaves and playthings of Angazhan, who murdered their playful whims and replaced them with a deep-seated hate and wild madness. These Tik Taan are rumored to shred the sanity of anyone who spends too long in their presence.

Knowledge (history) (DC 20+):
In addition to the above, you know that the cultists who created the Tik Taan were hunted by a brave tribe of the Mwangi called the Jambala Jaeg. The Jambala Jaeg created ritual knives, crafted out of bone handles and obsidian blades, to slay the demons inside the Tik Taan. Legends speak of the deadly mists of the Tik Taan, ill humors that invade men’s hearts by seeping into their mouths. Anyone wearing a scarf or other protection against the airborne menace is immune to its effects.

Although there were also a few opportunities to gather a few items of information en route that you may have taken advantage of, if you did not already know the information.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy (DC 10+):
Lugizar Trantos spent the better part of a year in the Mwangi Expanse. At first he wrote letters to his brother and wife, but after a few months these stopped coming and most gave him up for dead.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy (DC 15+):
In addition to the above, you know that Lugizar’s letters spoke of a lucrative find at one point, three idols of dark wood carved in the shape of bearded monkeys.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy (DC 20+):
In addition to the above, you know that the last of Lugizar’s letters evidenced an unhinged mind, and was covered in strange sketches of monkey paws. He described dark eyes glaring out from the mists.
Shortly after his return to Absalom, many of the monkeys and apes in the city’s menageries attacked their keepers and fled into greater Absalom..

As some of you may know the older scenarios, like this one, had Faction missions. In an effort to add some flavor of old with this run through of the scenario I will give you the Missives. These are purely optional and not required but should you wish to complete the missions you will get a little history of each faction. Nothing in game is affected by these (although occasionally they may provide you with information about opportunities that may help you complete a goal on a faction card).

Khellek:
As you gathered your belongings to head for the museum, you found a handed a hand-written note tucked among them:

Tender Supplicant,

You must prove yourself worthy of bliss: something strange is afoot at the Blakros Museum. Evil spirits vex the place and foul mists run its corridors, driving men mad. Driving men mad is a deep interest of mine, as you well know. Find the source of this infestation of power and bring me a sample of it, so I might study it. Do this and you shall know Hell’s most lustful delights.

Paracountess Zarta Dralneen

Kyra (and Cazlin?):
As you were about to depart the Skyreach, a young agent hands you a note:

Most Worthy One,

The Ruby Prince loves his subjects as you well know, but even he has enemies among Osirion’s greatest families. The Matl family has long proven a thorn in his side, and indeed their duplicitous brood has plagued our great nation for centuries, ever since Lakma the Usurper claimed control over the family’s destiny. Thankfully the arm of history is long-reaching, and we at court have long suspected Lakma’s treachery.

The true ancestor of the Matl family was one Taltuma-Matl, a wise servant of the pharaohs. His true will was never discovered, and in it he most likely names a distant cousin as the beneficiary of his family’s wealth and honors (knowing full well his closer kin, Lakma, was nothing but a vile, self-serving wretch). It has come to our attention that Taltuma’s remains are housed at the Blakros Museum, beyond our reach. We believe his last will was interred with him. Find it. If we can prove Lakma had no legitimate claim to his family’s holdings, we can embarrass his descendants at court who vex the Ruby Prince, thus solidifying his power and perhaps even paving our way to glory.

In Unfathomable Gratitude,

Amenopheus, The Sapphire Sage

Coreguy and Travail:
En route to the museum, a young girl on the street rushes up to you and slips a handwritten note in your hand before running off; the note reads:

Firebrand of Freedom,

You light the way to a better age with your continued bravery. I can’t express enough how grateful our nation is for your peerless service. We once more have desperate need of your talents. An agent of ours is in peril. His name is Sheg Wraithbane, a half-orc adventurer of note who was keeping tabs on the Blakros Museum for us, posing as a night watchman. We fear for his safety. A strange curse has befallen the place and we’ve no word from him.

Find him. If he lives, bring him safely from that accursed place. If he has perished, then you must bring his collection of keys to me immediately. He wears them on a ring on his belt.

I would trust this task to no other. May your sword arm know no equal, may your wits prove thrice as fast as your foes.

Sincerely Yours,

Captain Colson Maldris

Standing awkwardly to one side during the mission briefing and then hanging around the back of the group on the approach to the Blackros Museum, a very unusual halfling appears to be following the group (almost as if he thinks he's part of it!). Short and nervous looking, this odd fellow appears to be struggling with some kind of skin condition that leaves his face cracked, dry, and prone to flaking off in large scale-shaped pieces. During the briefing, he fails to suppress the urge to itch and three massive scale-flakes peel off his face to float to the ground. He flushes with embarrassment, turning a bright red to match the scraggle of scarlet hair atop his head.

In front of the museum, Cazlin finishes reading the mysterious note from the Scarab Sages and stuffs it into a pocket. He looks up at the ominous spire and creepy mist billowing forth and shudders.

"S-s-scary. W-w-whats that m-mist?" Cazlin mutters, stuttering, before inspecting the group that he'll be investigating with.

Travail nods at Cazlin, noting his quiver of arrows. "As long as you can aim, you should be all right."

He pulls a wand out his pack and aims it at himself. "I'm not much of a magician, but let's hope I can get this thing to work right. Will help me get behind anything nasty we find in there."

Travail looks to the cleric and the paladin. "Stay in front of anything hostile we find in there, I'll slip behind them and give 'em a good shiv from behind. Serendae won't mind, I hope."

Travail taps the wand on himself. Then again. Then again. Then again. And, on the 10th go, not inspiring any faith in his magical talents from his comrades, finally gets it to work.

Multiple UMD rolls, wand of longstrider:

"I c-c-can aim... b-but..." Cazlin appreciates the reassurance coming from Travail, but still watches the mist with some skepticism.

'He looks like he knows what he's talking about, but can my bow really do anything against that mist? I mean, even if its supernatural, it shouldn't be affected by arrows, right? I feel a little out of my league here. And Mr. Hestram sure didn't help with that.'

Swallowing to ready himself for more talking, he raises his hand to shake the wand wielding human's. "N-nice to m-meet-" he halts mid sentence, clearly finding it difficult to get out more than a few words. He gives up, pointing instead to himself with his other hand "Uh. C-Cazlin." He falls silent.

Yep, rear please! :>

He scurries off in search of a late night vendor willing to part with a few cloth scarves.

As he runs, he thinks of what he's seen from the four other members of the group.
'They all seem so confident, and they know a lot about some really unusual things. Did Mr. Hestram make a mistake? I don't feel like I fit in with these guys at all!'

Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

With each member now be-scarfed (sounds like the right word to me), the party peers into the gothic structure before them, even as it billows forth a silvery mist!

An unnatural cold permeates this chamber and the tendrils of silver-gray mist flowing out the front archway into the courtyard beyond seem to effortlessly pierce the flesh and gently caress the bone in a cold embrace. The grand entranceway’s vaulted ceiling is supported by six great pillars of hewn black stone. Braziers mounted on the pillars cast white radiance from balls of continual light. The light glimmers eerily in the silvery haze that fills the atrium, giving the impression of something alien watching from the glowing fog.

Okay, so you are about to embark on a dungeon crawl. like all dungeon crawls in PbP it translates rather poorly in this medium in of itself as my interactions are mostly reactive to what you do. To that end, I am employing an approach to the dungeon crawl that was used to great effect in a recent Outpost game I played with an excellent GM, so I am stealing using the technique for this game. I have never run a PbP dungeon crawl this way, but, since I know the method can be done well, I am going to try it. [Feel free to give me feedback on what is working and what is not.]

By proceeding in this manner, the onus for role-playing rests mostly in your capable hands. Keep doing what you've been doing and you won't get bored and I will do my best to keep things going on my end.

Up in the left corner, at the top of the page is a link to the "Battle Map and Slides” (the same link is labeled as “Mists of Mwangi” in my GM profile.) I am not hiding anything in this map as I do not see a point (the PCs were already given a map of the place), and if you decide to meta it will be clear to me. I have included silverfish-colored, cloud-like shapes to show the presence of the mist.

On this map, I will need you to place yourselves. When travelling in corridors, I expect you to have a standardized order, which you should come to an agreement about by the time we get to the first room here. When in rooms, you are where you last placed yourselves on the map. Thus if you post that you are attacking, but aren't next to the creature, you are essentially skipping your turn. If you want to engage in a "search pattern" or go view multiple objects in a room, please add arrows to the map to indicate your movement.

Can't access the map temporarily? Post something to that effect; your GM or a helpful player will move your character if he (or she) has instructions to do so!

The more things you set up and come to an agreement to as a group beforehand will make this section a lot more streamlined, but I won't force you into doing anything beyond what I've already stated. Use in-character talk to figure things out, and if it devolves into mechanics, use the discussion thread. Good luck!

Cazlin returns at a trot with two large bundles, one under each arm, shaking his head in dismay. He passes one of them to Coreguy and opens the second one himself. Within a couple of minutes he has brand new explorer's garb on underneath his armor. Just as he affixes the scarf across his face he smiles ruefully.

"C-can't just b-buy a scarf. Wh-whole p-pp-" He cuts off, struggling to force more words out. Suddenly, before he can stop himself, he spouts out:

"We face a danger wreathed in mist,
Need scarves to help us all resist,
But when a simple cloth would do,
The peddler forces outfits too!
Fighting spirits might be great upheaval...
But truly,
The love of gold is the root of evil."

Mortified, he turns to look out into the night and avoids eye contact with anyone else until the group is ready to go in. Once people are, he lets Coreguy take the lead and follows in the back, bow drawn and at the ready. He also pulls out a wand of CLW and passes it to Kyra in case it's needed.

Sounds from your description Valen that the primary difference here is that we should pay careful attention to our positions on the map at all times, to make sure they match up to the current actions in text. That sounds like standard operating procedure to me. Is there another way to run a dungeon crawl? We can talk in discussion.

@GM Valen: Please assume that Travail does all of the following before the party opens a door. Since we're mid-tier, I want to have every advantage...

Travail Actions for GM:

Travail, listens at the door: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Travail reports any findings to the group.
Travail checks the door for traps: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
If Travail finds a trap, he disables it: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
After the frontliners, Travail enters the room stealthily bow in hand: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
(In other words, instead of "marching order" when the party enters a room, if successful Travail will be behind a column hidden and ready to fire.)

Obviously you would reroll those each time...)

Travail gives Cazlin a sideways glance, unperturbed by his odd behavior. "Heh, what else do you expect in the capital city? We were ripe for the pickings. In my youth, I would have stolen them for us."

"Well Khellek, you were right about these scarves... this mist is unnaturally thick."

The elderly scholar nods to Coreguy. "Come along to one of my lectures. One can learn a lot from the study of history, and avoid repeating mistakes."

He takes out a crossbow and slots a quarrel into place.
"Bessie here dropped a bear at thirty paces once. While I'm not exactly as good a shot as I was in my younger days, I'm sure she will help keep you youngsters safe."

Khellek will generally stick in the back rank.

Cazlin swallows and gives Travail and Coreguy a weak smile, along with a "Th-thanks." to Coreguy's complement. He looks like he's about to try to struggle to explain further, but the ominous looking mist (and his own speech impediment) makes him think twice.

As Coreguy opens the door violently, Cazlin focuses on listening, hoping to hear if someone or something is out in the mist of the atrium.
