GM Tyranius |
Belvica moves forward and smashes her axeblade into one of them and finds it to be filled with a grainy explosive powder. Before the dwarf has much else to do a thick sheet of webbing snaps out at her.
Web vs Belvica: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
The thick webbing misses the dwarf as it encases the barrel.
Tobold: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Hey! Belvica, be careful with those kegs!
I suspect they could make quite a boom if you impact it too many times.
Roderick, seeing two large arachnids at the far end of the hull, quickly mixes an explosive and hurls at the one to the north.
Bomb, range, pb: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 = 27 Explosve dmg : 2d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3) + 3 + 1 = 8 10' radius splash, 6 fire dmg (DC14 for half).
Creatures that take a direct hit from an explosive bomb catch fire, taking 1d6 points of fire damage each round until the fire is extinguished. Extinguishing the flames
Alexander d'Louison |
Keeping his back to the stairs, Alexander peeks around the corner.
"Well, they look rather mean and big. I'll try to sap the strength of the one behind us."
Casting Ray of Enfeeblement on the yellow one.
Ranged touch attack, PBS: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 = 24
Strength damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 , DC 15 Fortitude for half
Oh my... Let's see if I can confirm that crit.
Ranged touch attack, PBS: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 1 = 14
That will possibly hit, so I'll roll additional damage. Do note that the spider's strength score can't be reduced to less than 1 though.
Additional strength damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Naomi Hiddenleaf |
"Everybody out, Belvica roll that keg to stairs. Roderick, get ready to ignite the powder. Tobold, bring that other keg." Naomi grows an illusory wall around the group and the two closest explosive kegs, then moves out of the way waving arms for the other ship to shove off (just in case the explosion is really big). She lets the illusion drop whenever Roderick is ready to make a really big boom.
GM Tyranius |
Gringo begins to inspire the others to great feats of strength. Alexander fires a dark ray of energy at the yellow spider.
Fort save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
The spider slumps a bit as it seems to get considerably weaker. Naomi raises a large wall. blocking most of the spiders view as Roderick readies a bomb. The wall almost drops immediately as Roderick hurls his bomb at the northern spider.
The bomb explodes and rocks the entire back end of the ship as the spider catches fire.
Green Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
The spiders skitter across the floor and bite at Belvica and Roderick.
Red bite vs Belvica AC FF 22: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 + Poison
Fort DC 14; 1 round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 strength damage
Green Bite vs Roderick AC 19: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
The deadly mandibles dig into Belvica's shoulder. Immense pain begins to run down her arm.
In retaliation Belvica raises her blade and cleaves through the spider.

Tobold "Tobi" Fusil |
I had assumed Naomi meant to delay those actions until after Roderick's first action so Belvica and I would have a turn to get the barrels in place, but ah well.
Tobi draws his greatsword and attacks the nearest arachnid.
Halfling Greatsword Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Halfling Greatsword Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Tobold "Tobi" Fusil |
Yes, I realize that. I was pointing it out because, in theory, Naomi's illusion is still up, and I don't think we get to auto-disbelieve illusions just because we're with the caster. I don't recall Naomi explaining to us that she used an illusion before and none of us made a spellcraft roll to identify it, so we have little reason to believe she didn't just conjure a wall. The point is moot now, just making it.
Alexander d'Louison |
"We might not live to regret this, but here goes nothing.!"
Alexander draws his wand of Burning Hands and blasts one of the spider.
Hitting only green, and no explosives
Fire damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 , DC 11 reflex for half
Naomi Hiddenleaf |
Illusions of this sort, figments, are basically magically produced holograms They don't disappear just because something went through them or are disbelieved. Also, as the caster, I can control it and have it react in some way, such as leaving a momentary gap for Rod's bomb to go through before sealing up completely, which can avoid the disbelief bonus. Even in the strictest sense of the rules, a disbeliever still sees it, they can just tell that it is fake because somehow RAW,even though the figment is not doing anything to anyone's mind, disbelievers still see something different than others. It isn't explained very well, and the best explaination thus far for solving this contradiction (well the only one that actually solves the contradiction with both elements remaining true) is to think of it like one of those magic eye posters. A disbeliever sees the figment as false but doesn't actually see anything different, much like two people looking at a magic eye poster are both seeing the same picture despite one person seeing something more in the image that the other person doesn't. Same image different perceptions, still an image though and not suddenly transparent.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick dodges the large spider's mandibles.
That was as close as I want to come to those!
He 5' steps and launches an electrical bomb, not wanting to blast so close to the party. He shapes the blast to exclude his two allies from the shock.
Bomb, range, pb: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 1 = 26 elec dmg : 2d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4, 2) + 3 + 1 = 10 5' radius splash, 6 elec dmg (DC14 for half).
GM Tyranius |
@Naomi- You just made it sound like you were dropping it completely as Roderick threw his bomb. Sounds good though. There is always a little bit of miscommunication in these :)
Belvica Str Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Tobolds blade drops the flaming green spider right i it's tracks before it has anywhere else to move.
Gringo's deadly pistols blast a pair of twin clean holes into the only remaining spider. Roderick's electrical bomb fries the spider where it stands. Though the sparks come close to the barrels it doesn't ignite them. The spider falls to the ground and twitches momentarily before falling still.
Belvica you have 3 more rounds of poison to try and resist
The fore cabin contains a desk and some papers, including the ship’s logbook. That document clearly indicates that the Hanspur’s Luck was ordered by Lady Riverbane to come to this location and await further instructions.

Poking around a bit after the encounter, Tobi finds a few potions. "Hey! What are these?" he asks, holding them out for someone else to identify.
They're potions of lesser restoration, but Tobi doesn't know that because he's not interested in reading labels or anything like that.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick will attempt to help the poisoned dwarf with her ailment.
"Here. Smear some of this root on the bite injection, Belvica."
Heal : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Naomi Hiddenleaf |
I'm still lost on how all the spiders are dead, but oh well. As for dropping the wall, Naomi planned on doing that after everyone was above deck, so the spiders would bottleneck at the stairs when Rod blew the powder that Bel was supposed to put there. Although, that was probably the easiest encounter I ever was a part of (in pathfinder anyway), though I think it might be because everyone else is higher level than me.
Naomi looks at the spiders, "Well those are much weaker than I expected. By a lot." Naomi then started looking around, including in the flooded part of the vessel. As she comes across powder kegs, she'll move them near the stairs so they can be taken with us. How heavy are the kegs anyway?
Roderick Xim |
When you have a charging dwarf crit with a x3 weapon, things can go down quickly. :-) Which is good, fewer of us poisoned at least.
Roderick will continue to administer aid until Belvica is cured.
Alexander d'Louison |
Stowing his wand, Alexander takes stock of the situation.
"That was less horrible than i feared. Well, that's the first leg of Bazzak's quest. Should continue towards the vault?"
GM Tyranius |

they didn't have a whole lotta health and greatsword attack mixed with pistols tore them up as one was also on fire.
Belvica shakes off the poison as Naomi looks to gather some of the explosive powder. Looking the barrels over she believes with another persons aid it may be moveable. The only problem is that the bottom of the barrels are rotted away from the few inches of water covering the floor.
Following the encounter on board the Hanspur’s Luck, the expedition resumes its course. The next morning, Lady Riverbane anchors her ship and leads the you ashore. She hands Naomi a small map. This is the place where the Black Marquis’s men were last seen. She says as she points to a small point on the map. I need to stay back with the ship to make sure it doesn't fall to brigands so you will be on your own from here on out. She says.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick regards the lady pirate and the ship.
Just be sure to keep this ship here until we return.
We do not want to tell the Black Marquis we were stranded here.
We will return soon enough.
Roderick restores his bomb materials for the new day and prepares to disembark for the vault.
GM Tyranius |
The forest here is ancient. Dense masses of leafage impose an eerie twilight of dark green while forlorn trees speak of a bygone age where humans wrestled for survival in a land of darkness. Many thick sheets of giant webbing stretch like great shrouds around the gaunt trees and groveling bushes. The entire area is a maze of tree trunks, bushes, undergrowth, and webs.

After a few miles walk inland Roderick rushes to keep up. His eyes go wide as his feet quickly give out from underneath him. What seemed like a patch of wet leaves seems to have been used to cover up a concealed pit trap.
Need a reflex save
Roderick Xim |
Roderick gasps as his footing falls out from beneath him.
What in the world?
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 as he deftly jumps clear of certain doom.
Beware lads...and lady. This seems to have been deliberate subterfuge!
GM Tyranius |
Roderick catches his breath as his heart pounds feverishly. Covered in gooey webbing, the broken corpse of one of the Black Marquis’s men lies at the bottom of this first pit. As they venture deeper into the
maze, the group spot a few more dead bodies hanging upside-down in giant spider webs—all members of the ill-fated expedition.
Navigating this labyrinth is no easy task and will take a bit of survival to not fall into another of these traps.
Need 2 Survival Checks
Tobold "Tobi" Fusil |
Deferring to the more experienced tracker, Tobi and Tug lend their aid to Belvica in navigating the pitfalls.
Tobi Survival Aid: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Roderick Xim |
survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 assist
survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 assist
Roderick will check over the trail work of the others, but other than a nod here and there, he is comfortable with their skills.
Excellent woodcraft. Avoiding any more of those pits is splendid.
Naomi Hiddenleaf |
Naomi fills 6 pouches with about a pound of powder in each. She carries 3, and Teak the other 3.
Traveling through the wood, Naomi takes up the rear guard. She also takes note of all the bodies and their locations, so they can be recovered later, if the chance presents itself.
GM Tyranius |
Though the majority of the party tries to lead her in the wrong direction Belvica sticks to her gut instinct and takes the lead. Within hours the group is successfully through the labyrinth.
Making it out of the cramped passageways and into a clearing. The web-covered trees here are still as ominous as they were in the labyrinth and dead leaves cover the ground. A few hundred yards beyond, a low hill bare of any vegetation rises from the sea of green. But what catches the groups attention is a man in tattered clothes laboriously crawling in your direction.

Peering closely Belvica notices something odd hidden in the foliage. She sees a hideous purple creature that seems to walk upright like a man, but has the face of a spider with sickle shaped hands.
As she watches the creature Roderick and Gringo notice something else just as terrifying. Small strands of translucent web seem to be attached to the crawling man's limbs. The webbing is what is making the man look to be crawling like some sort of marionette puppet. Lying just before the puppet is another concealed pit trap.
