GM Tyranius |
A week ago, you were seated in the main hall of the Grand Lodge of Absalom, waiting for the arrival of Absalom’s newest venturecaptain, a tall, dark-haired and olive-skinned Varisian woman named Eliza Petulengro. Renowned for her composure under pressure and the author of more than two dozen Pathfinder Chronicles entries, she appeared in the hall suddenly, a stack of chronicles in her arms, and looked you over before speaking.
“My greatest pupil, Pathfinder Bodriggan Wuthers, has gone missing. He followed a cleric contact back to Wuthers’s home city of Oppara to work on a massive dig beneath the House of the Immortal Son, Oppara’s famed opera house and once temple to the dead god, Aroden. That was a year ago. He sent monthly reports, hoping to see their publication in a chronicle, before all contact dried up a few months back. I’m worried something has gone wrong, and the Society has a vested interest in the artifact he was researching and seeking. We want you to travel to Oppara and find Wuthers. We’d like to know exactly what he was seeking, too, since he neglected to inform us through his monthly correspondence. He hinted only that the cleric of Irori he was working with told him the object was the world’s greatest ‘living’ artifact—whatever that means.
“I have a few tidbits of information to pass to you before you go: the House of the Immortal Son is nearly impossible to access. It took Wuthers months and countless bribes to get where he did. For you, I have a much simpler idea. Go to an opera, wait for an opportunity, and then exploit it to find Wuthers and his dig site.
“Be sure to wear something festive—the Taldan nobility are arrogant on their best days and if you arrive at the opera dressed like that,” she waves her hands at you, “they’ll surely lose your tickets or regret to inform you that the opera house is oversold. “Go and report back to me directly upon your return to Absalom.”
Ghaenk |
"Right then... so, has the Society booked us passage to Oppara? Or are we left to our devices to get there," the young Halfling sighed. "Oh, and... nice to meet you, Eliza. Ghaenk Frostmane, at your service!"
Caladrel Quinn |
A young and slim Elf waits patiently as the VC tells him of his mission and can barely contain his excitement. He wears a brown cloak over his chain shirt, and wears a scimitar at his hip and a bow and quiver on his back. The bow however is very nice with Salish etching throughout. As she finishes up he gives a bow. "My name is Caladrel Quinn, I look forward to assisting the Society in any way I can. I don't fancy the idea of playing dress up, but if you insist.... I will pick up a nobles outfit for the opera.
Cerin Felberry |
Sitting on a chair much to large for them, but not seeming to notice sits a small, slightly built Gnome in well madr but dishevelled clothing, a gentry's black jacket faded to gray and a battered top hat resting on Dark blue-violet hair which lies unkempt and covers the Gnome's eyes. On their right hand is a sock puppet sewn together from a mishmash of scraps ehich has only one eye. They seem to spend most of their time talking to the puppet in a low voice.
When the venture Captain finishes their briefing, the Gnome snaps their head up in rapt attention and focuses their wide midnight blue eyes on her. Their voice is soft and they have an argument with the puppet.
"What is opera? No never mind, we find out on our own, Oppara nice time of year? No irrelevant. Who is Wuthers? You have contact for fancy outfit?"

From his table spot around the table, Ulfgar doesn't look all too happy with the prospect of dressing up. While his armor once might have been that of a nobleman of the Five Kings mountains, it is ancient and the crest is faded, almost unrecognizable. His large tattoo which ends with the head of a lizard on its face will be ver hard to hide.
"Greetings master Petulengro, will we 'ave access to a side entrance from the inside to get our gear in? I doubt we be allowed to enter fully armed."
Will buy nobles outfit (dankill clan), signet ring (dankill family crest) and some jewelry, total 175g after the equipement questions are answered

We will take care of all expenses to get to Oppara.
"Greetings master Petulengro, will we 'ave access to a side entrance from the inside to get our gear in? I doubt we be allowed to enter fully armed."
There is little need for a side entrance. The Taldan nobles are impressed by out tales of grandeur. I have gotten you access for free and you will be allowed to enter with your weapons if you wish. There is a tailor down the road that will sell you some more of the finer clothes and jewelry if you wish to makea purchase.

The door slams open and in stumbles a middle aged man with wild white hair. He shouts out the door,
"You know not what you mock! When He-She-It-They arrives, you'll be sorry you didn't listen. You should..."
He ducks behind a giant tower shield covered in equations, graphs, and quotes as a series of dull thuds hit it.
"The joke's on you! I can a scrape those eggs off and have them for dinner!"
He shakes his fist angrily out the door, then turns to the party.
"So, where are we off to?"

Cerin Felberry |
Cerin looks intently at the hand puppet and has a hurried and whispered conversation with the creation, though it doesn't seem to talk back. He then looks up at the strange man with the door for a shield and sighs dramatically, speaking quickly for the human to catch up.
"WelltheVentureCaptainhastoldustovisitthroperainOpparatofindhermissingappre nticeassomeclericofIroritoldhimabouta'living'artefactandnowitwouldseemthath ehasgonemissingandshereallymisseshim. Understand?"
The dread gnome then hops off the overly large chair and deftly packs everything away in their backpack, makingg everything fit just so.
"Ok? I will see what I can afford, I am Cerin by the by, Cerin Felberry, Journeyman of Death."
Ulfgar Dankill |
What are PFS rules on lending money to fellow pathfinders? I imagine some of us might not have the funds to acquire a courtiers outfit (30g) with the necessary jewelry (50g). Starting characters for example. Then again the description only gives a -2 Diplomacy check penalty so it might not be too bad to show up without.
Ulfgar nods at the answers from VC Petulengro, he notes the address of the shop down.
"How will we recognize either Wuthers or the cleric of Irori?
After an answer about the cleric, he makes a small sketch of the holy symbol in his notes.
...
"Nice to meet ya Cerin, the names Ulfgar - Orcbane - Dankill, Despoiler of Aspis, Savior and Guide to the Young. What's with the puppet?"
Caladrel Quinn |
I say Ulfgar, how did you earn such illustrious titles? Or are they more self-given...oh well who am I to question such fantasy. Cal rolls his eyes at Ulfgar and says to himself...met one dwarf, you've met them all.
Ghaenk |
Ghaenk glances at Caladrel, "I could say the same thing about elves... Oh goodness, did I say that outloud?
With quick flash of his broad smile, Ghaenk leaps from his chair. "Guess we'll be needing some new threads!" he says to Cerin. "Certainly hope the tailor has some clothing in our size."
Cerin Felberry |
Cerin tilts their head at the dwarf thee blue haired gnome looking at him like he had only just noticed that he was stood there. Looking at the cloth creation in his hand and studies it for a moment before turning back to Ulgar.
"Killed man for it." is his reply, soft, dark and utterly serious before turning to Ghaenk.
"Hmm yes, maybe makes one suit into two, or we go as one man/"
I will buy a courtier's outfit with 30 of my remaining 39gp, can't afford jewellry
GM Tyranius |
Can't loan gold. What you can do is buy a second set yourself and give it to a charcter (on loan) for the scenario and at the end of the scenario either you keep it or sell it for half the cost.
Though the House of the Immortal Son has a reputation for opulence and excess, it never turns away anyone with any obvious amount of money or fame. Pathfinders are a source of great discussion in Taldor and the nobility love to read of their exploits and adventures. You are allowed to attend the opera for free (regardless of how they’re dressed), but anyone wearing less than a courtier’s outfit and 50 gp or more of jewelry suffers a –2 penalty on all Charisma-based checks when dealing with any Taldan nobles throughout the scenario.
Among the Living, the title of the opera the PCs attend, debuts the night they visit the House of the Immortal Son. It’s an epic tale of a lone Ulfen warrior named Victory who sails to the ends of Golarion, crashes off the edge of the world, and finds himself in a gothic paradise where he falls in love with the undead queen of a jungle kingdom. It’s melodramatic, over-acted, gaudy, and tasteless—just the sort of affair Taldor’s wealthy screams to attend.
Once a temple to Aroden, the House of the Immortal Son has, since his death, been Taldor’s most opulent and expensive opera house. It is a large, windowless, cylindrical building made of polished marble and granite and surrounded by thick, finely-carved pillars. Built in the earliest traditional styles of Aroden temples, the opera house lacks windows (visitors are meant to look up, not out) and its roof is a complicated piece of stone statuary that replicates the holy symbol of Aroden, a steady winged eye gazing forever toward the heavens. The interior of the House of the Immortal Son is full of expensive carpets, excessive gilding, and ridiculously large candelabras and chandeliers.
You reach your seats a few minutes into the beginning of the opera. As you look on stage, you see a twirling dancer in a brown costume festooned with bright pink, flowing silk scarves spins across the jungle set at the front of the stage, the orchestra reaches a screeching crescendo that crashes the entire opera to a halt. The dancers stand quietly for a moment, breathing heavily and listening to the scattered applause across the obviously bored Taldan audience. Suddenly, a sound like a thousand gongs shakes the entire building to its very foundation and the audience murmurs in a mixture of delight and fear. The actors and orchestra, however, flee the stage, disappearing behind the curtains.
The music, vocals, and dancing of Among the Living is amateurish at best and not of the caliber normally expected for the House of the Immortal Son.
Ghaenk |
Ghaenk will purchase a courtier's outfit and 50gp worth of jewelry.
Ghaenk looks to his fellow Pathfinder's, "I don't believe that tremor was part of the play. Be on your guard!" With that, he leaps on top of his chair, looking about the audience and the stage for any signs of trouble.
{The} Herald |
Herald licks his palm and smoothes his wayward tufts of hair down on his mostly bald pate.
Every copper I earn goes toward warning the sheeple of their impending doom, he mutters to himself.
Not that they appreciate it.
Herald will fix himself up as much as possible, but cannot afford any clothing or jewelry.
Caladrel Quinn |
Cal purchases the outfit and jewelry. He watches in admiration at the performances, enjoying the arts, and at the sound of the Hong breaks out of his day dream. Ehem! So what'd I miss? Is it over already? Wow I got all dressed up for nothing. Ghaenk my boy you're just overacting, it's all part of the show!
Cerin Felberry |
Trussed up in a much smarter and better fitted jacket and trousers, Cerin places his battered hat in his backpack, taking care for it to sit in the exact place. His dark blue-purple hair proves to be unruly and lies over his eyes, perfect for dozing off at the boring opera, though the puppet on his hand seems always ragerly pointed at the stage.
Snapped awake by the loud gong, as many doubtless with him, the Gnome squints at the performers dashing from the stage in a hurry.
"Hmm, ifthisispartoftheplay then, why are the dancers running?"
Ulfgar Dankill |

Earplugs: Made of waxed cotton or cork, earplugs give you a +2 circumstance bonus on saves against effects that require hearing but also cause a –5 penalty on hearing-based Perception checks.
I'll buy 50gp of jewelry extra and lend 50gp of jewelry to Cerin and Herald. I'll also buy Herald a courtiers outfit. I'm in a nobles outfit but with 50gp instead of a 100gp. If asked, Ulfgar will say the most important jewelry is hidden from view.... If asked by a good looking female dwarf, he'll even offer to show it. (CHA 9). 65gp to waste. That's like an expensive healing potion used.
Ulfgar ignores the snorty remark from Caladrel. Every title was earned after all. Typically elf not to care about real world achievements.
Seeing as Cerin and Herald can't afford the jewelry, Ulfgar lends him some of his in a very un-dwarfly fashion. Ulfgar's goal in life isn't fortune, but fame and through that the restoration of his family name. None the less he notes it down in his chronicle book. "Cerin owes me 50gp of jewelry, Herald owes me 50gp of jewelry and 15gp for his courtiers outfit. To be payed by the first of Desnus 4716. They can be found at the lodge at locations X and Y.".
***
Ulfgar had followed the story of Victory, until it becomes apparent (even for him) that it wasn't a combat but rather a love story, he began focusing on the opera building itself. He had bought earplugs -3cp on his way here and has them in the entire time. If its too late to have bought them, I'll just note them on my sheet, but not use them for this adventure.
As the gongs sound is heard, Ulfgar looks up and sees the men running from the stage. He frowns but shrugs. Much like the rest of the audience, he has no idea if it is part of the show or not.
"The actors run because the next scene is coming up? Anyone know how long this pansy dansy stuff lasts normally?" he eyes Caladrel with that question, "Anyone see Wuthers or this cleric of Irori?"
