Awenydd83 here.

A travel worn half orc walks into the room and drops a heavily laden pack on the floor in the corner. A cloud of dust billows out from the impact, testifying the many miles traveled recently. He looks around noticing he is the first to enter, and picks a chair by the fire to rest in until everyone else shows up.

Xuan Fung is Tian-Shu, so Xuan is his family name and Fung is his name.

Fung, a young Tian-Shu man, steps lightly into the room, almost as if he was floating in the air. He is garbed in simple robes, although they cover what appear to be quite well-crafted leather lamellar armor. Other than a simple dagger at his belt, Fung carries little else. Interestingly enough though, there appears to be a constant breeze around him, gently stirring his robes and his long flowing jet-black hair.

He notices the half-orc sitting by the fire, and appears uncertain how to proceed. Fung smiles with some apprehension at him, before introducing himself, "Um .. greetings. My name is Xuan Fung. Fung, if you will."

Fung's role in combat is primarily a ranged striker. Out of combat, he has some thieving skills.

The scale mail armor and spear that he carries are barely noticed in the shadow of the expensive styles. He carries himself with grace and confidence.

Goblins|| ...||Heresy

On a brisk fall evening, Pathfinder Society Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng welcomes the you into his modest Absalom home for an impromptu meeting. He offers you chairs and drinks, wipes sweat from his brow, and dives into business. He is a stout and hardy Taldan with thin, graying hair and a thick, bushy mustache, unfurls a map on his butcher-block table and places a meaty finger on the parchment.

"The abandoned district of Beldrin’s Bluff was once the gem of Absalom’s Precipice District—now it is but a weathered crag of broken rock at the edge of the roiling sea. When the great quake hit ten years ago, entire blocks of the Bluff sheared from the mainland. Cliffside tearooms and exclusive estates fell into the waves and carried hundreds of nobles to a watery grave. An elite academy, called the Tri-Towers Yard, remained on the mainland, but sank wholesale into the earth. Children unfortunate enough to survive the quake lay pinned under debris as sewer water slowly rose from the ground and drowned them. Nearly every student perished."

"Today, crumbled stone walls and weed-filled lots sprawl where gentlemen’s clubs once filled with pipe smoke and hobnobbing lords. The Drownyard—er, that’s what the illmannered call the school these days—lies behind a fence of black iron pikes, constructed by the families of the dead to discourage morbid trespassers.

"Even respected archaeological groups have been denied official access. Our own Society has itched to explore the site ever since the quake—that is, ever since we discovered that the school fell through the roof of a lost necropolis. Unfortunately, the emotional trauma attached to the school has remained fresh. But finally, after ten years of mourning, the politically-connected families of dead students have sanctioned our delve request."

With a toothy smile and a clap, Drenge says, "I’m pleased Beldrin’s Bluff was once an affluent cliff side neighborhood to announce that I’ve selected your team for the delve. I want you to find a way into the necropolis, document your findings with professional detail, and recover artifacts of historical significance. The Society is interested in one artifact in particular—a two-finger ring topped with a ruby salamander."

"In ancient times, a wealthy merchant cut a ruby salamander ring from the hand of young cat burglar named Horastian. Horastian later became a renowned information broker and art collector. The Pathfinder Society hopes to magically locate the long-dead thief and his fabled hoard by using the ring as a divination focus." He pauses to take a long drink from a worn ale horn. "I do not know what you will encountor in the necropolis as your team will be the first from the Society to explore it. I'm sure you've all passed your Confirmation by now though, and know to be well prepared on your adventures."

Drandle pulls an iron key from his waistcoat. "I leave you with the key to the Drownyard gate. Remember, the Drownyard is a deeply personal site for many powerful Inner Sea families. You will tread upon the graves of their children. Be sure to give the site the respect it deserves. About the necropolis, moldering texts tell of a coastal necropolis, rich with ancient treasures. Until the Tri-Towers Yard sank, no one knew the necropolis’s location. Go into town and see if you can find out anymore information before heading off."

Knowledge Local or Diplomacy (Gather Information) DC 10:
The Tri-Towers Yard was an elite academy for the youth of the noblest families of Beldrin’s Bluff. The quake struck at noonday. The children were buried in rubble, and as the sea frothed up from below, it carried unnatural things, tormented dead long ago interred in a hidden necropolis beneath the academy. No one survived. Now the Tri-Towers Yard is known as the Drownyard, a desolate ruin filled with strange black ichors and salty brine.

Fung sighs to himself. Why is it always the dead...

Adding on to Mun, Fung replies to Dreng, "If there are any restless undead, we'll do what we can to lay them rest."

Turning to the party, Fung asks, "Are any of you able to see if this ring is magical?"

Before we head into the necropolis, Fung will pass his wand of clw to any of the divine casters to use on him after combat if necessary. He also has a wand of longstrider, and unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anyone in the party with that in their spell list? If so, can Fung get Mun's help to UMD that? Everyone else is free to use the two wands if you wish.

The tall elf addresses the group. "I am known as Mūn." He pronounced the name the same as the large orb that hovers above Golarion throughout the night. "I think I may have neglected to introduce myself before."

"Fung, I should definitely be able to identify if the ring is magic; and perhaps learn some of its abilities if that is so."

The elf appears a little frustrated before continuing. "I did some research, and uncovered little more than what Dreng told us, other than some irrelevant facts like the timing of the disaster. I think, given that we have strong reason to suspect we'll encounter the undead, we might want to take the time for some shopping; other than that, though, we should probably head up to the site and begin our investigation."

Mūn will purchase 2 vials of holy water before we head up to the ruins.

While spells with a range of 'personal', such as Longstrider, can absolutely be made into wands, they are a bit limited because only the person using the wand can get the benefit. So in this case, if Mun is the only one with UMD, he is only able to use it on himself. The same would be true even if it were on his spell list. Technically it can't even be used on an animal companion, which I recently learned. While they have Share Spells, that does not apply to spells cast from a wand or scroll.

Dreng just shakes his head at the additional questions and shuffles you out of his home. "I'm sorry that I don't have any further information for you but I am very confident in all your abilities to see this through."

It takes a little over 2 hours to make your way to the Precipice District on the other side of town. Within minutes of arriving, a well dressed messenger taps Mun on the shoulder, and without saying a word, hands him a scroll on delicate, but very expensive parchment.

Hero of the Society,
It has come to my attention that you and your cohorts
were chosen by the noble Pathfinders to enter and
explore what became of the Tri-Towers Yard. As my
daughter, Junia, was lost there during the great quake,
it seems only proper that you attend the banquet I am
holding tomorrow in memory of her. You and your friends
should wear your finest and arrive at the Dacilane Estate
in the Ivy District at sundown. As you are probably not
accustomed to the traditions of nobles, not attending
this dinner would be a serious slight upon the memory of
my daughter.

Sincerely,
Lady Miranda Dacilane

Since there is really no investigating to do, I'm just going to move us along to the dinner.

As you arrive at the address on the invitation you find a sprawling estate surrounded by a tall, wrought-iron fence and overly decorated in statuary, fountains, and a carefully landscaped garden. As you approach the door, before you can even knock, a butler opens the door and motions you to enter. "Welcome, Pathfinders, to Lady Miranda Dacilane's estate."

Inside the house you see gilded furniture, painted ceilings, gold-spun wallpaper, and valuable Chelish rugs that, if sold, could easily feed a family in the Puddles District for a year. Coming down the stairs is a striking middle aged Chelish woman with a very stern face, in an exceptionally expensive lavender gown. "Good evening Pathfinders. I am Lady Miranda Dacilane. Let us eat first and then we shall discuss why I called you."

Dinner is a long, drawn out affair of 10 courses, each tasting better than the last. The dining room is a bustle of activity with 3 separate servants busily hurrying about like bees, bringing out plates of food and clearing away the scraps. Your glasses are always being topped off as soon as they are almost empty. She keeps to small talk while eating and listens to the stories you have to tell, though she never really says much about herself.

After dinner she starts talking about the real reason she asked you to eat with her. "My daughter Junia was one of so many children lost. Hundreds of them pinned under the rubble in that sinkhole. The black water rising—the kids screaming." She quiets for a moment. With a tear running down her cheek, "None of us could get to them." She gets her composure back after a few moments, "I would like you to bring back any information you have on my daughter. I just need some closure." She looks at you with a look of despair on her face as another tear slowly runs down her cheek.

Sense Motive DC 10:
Despite her obvious wealth, the Lady Dacilane’s grief is very real

Sense Motive DC 15:
Though she acts very polite to all of you, you can tell that having to socialize with guests that are not nobility, is very uncomfortable for her.

Throughout the dinner, Fung is clearly uncomfortable as well. Despite his bluster earlier, he stays completely quiet throughout the dinner, eventually taking the cue and lead from Mun rather obviously. How to drink the soup, which knife to use, even how to sit. Anyway observing might even think he is an automaton keyed to Mun's actions. Fung dutifully eats up every scrap of food presented to him, not tasting a single morsel.

When Lady Dacilane starts to speak, Fung sits up rimrod straight, displaying some impatience, just wishing for the night to be over. However, when she starts to share on the fate of her daughter and the other unfortunately children, he gradually but visibly soften, especially when he hears the clear grief in her voice.

She is just as uncomfortable with me as I am with her. We are from two different worlds, but perhaps not too different after all.

Still not quite daring to question the lady too much, he mumbles under his breath, faintly audible but definitely earnest, "I am sorry for what happened to your daughter. We'll do what we can to bring you closure."

Hervey is moved by the lady's display of despair. "We shall do everything in our power to treat the Yard with the dignity and respect your daughter and all the other poor children deserve. We shall not disturb anything needlessly nor forget our purpose there."

He coughs slightly, leans forward, and continues, "I know it's difficult, but can you tell us anything more about what happened that day? Was the quake natural or magical? Did you see anything in the water with the children?"

Garekk sits quietly through dinner, ram rod straight. Because of his Orcish heritage, he has had few encounters with human nobility. However, he does understand Honor and Grief.

"I understand your grief, my Lady." Garekk says, taking his turn in the conversation. "We will do what we can to assist you."

She takes a moment to regain her composure, and her stoic face returns before answering your questions. "I wish I knew more about that day, but I was here at home when it happened and allowing explorers has been a sensitive subject to the families. Myself, and some of the other, wealthier families, have decided enough is enough, and that we need to know more though. That's why you're here." She says with a hint of annoyance. It seems like she's starting to get exasperated with having to host and interact with 'lesser' people.

She gestures to an enormous painting in the dining hall of a rigid, sharp-featured young girl with long black hair. "This is an exact portrait I had commissioned right before she started school that year. It is the only one I have, and after the accident I had it moved in here, so she could eat dinner with me. I do recall Junia once mentioning that lesser children— not my Junia, mind you—skipped class to tell ghost stories by candlelight in an abandoned corridor beneath the school. I know she would never be involved with such riff raff."

Lady Dacilane pauses a moment as she tries to choke back another tear. "I'm sorry, but I must ask you all to leave now. Talking about my Junia has been very difficult and I need my rest." With that, she abruptly gets up from her chair and walks back upstairs, as one of her house servants shows you to the door.

Beldrin’s Bluff is a rotting ghost town at the edge of a hungry sea. Throughout the derelict landscape, seagulls perched on splintered timbers reflect your passage in their glassy black eyes. Overhead, dark clouds move ashore with the promise of a storm.

As the you approach the Drownyard on Beldrin’s Bluff’s west side, you see a fence of black iron pikes surrounds a block-wide yard. Dead tree branches reach out from the fence like the arms of emaciated prisoners desperate to escape. A man is on the inside, cutting the trees down. Some of the dismembered branches remain, stuck in place by knotty elbows swollen around the iron.

Garekk stands as the Lady dismisses them and retreats from the room. With a nod to the house servants, he leads the way from the home and into the night.

The next morning, he meets up with the other pathfinders at the Drownyard, and nods his head over towards the caretaker. "I guess we shall start with him." Garekk says, before calling out to the man. "Ho there! We are Pathfinders, sent from the Lodge to investigate the ruins. Can you spare a moment?"

There is a gate with a simple padlock along the iron fence.

The man looks up from his sawing and watches as you approach, his thinning hair is matted and sweaty. As Mun and Garekk call out to him for assistance, he maintains his silent, suspicious staring. Something about the way he looks at you, it's as if he is staring into your soul, and it send a chill down your spine. Behind him, you can see partially collapsed buildings and three whitewashed towers leaning precariously in a lake-filled yard.

Mūn gets a chill when the man returns his address with nothing but a stare. He glances back at the rest of the group, as if he wants to make sure he's not walking up alone. He draws the Drownyard's iron gate key from a pocket as he walks towards the lock.

"So, are you a caretaker of this facility? That wasn't mentioned, in fact. Are you employed by one of the families?"

As soon as the Pathfinders open the gate and pass through, the man approaches them with an abruptly friendly demeanor. He drops his gloves, smiles, and reaches out a hand to shake those of his new friends. Whatever suspicians it seemed like he had, have completely melted away. "Hello there, friends! Besides your new found friend, the entire area is empty save for a few crows picking through the grass. And despite the man's somewhat odd behavior, he is alive and well.
