The cool shade beneath the roof of Manaket's Swordmeet Lodge provides a welcome respite against the dry heat of Rahadoum. Here, incense burns in the corners of this well-adorned meeting room and soft cushioned chairs provide comfortable landing pads for the bottoms of travel-weary Pathfinder bottoms.

A Chelaxian of slight build walks into the building, he sniffs the nice smelling incense, his mind goes to a happier time before a frown crosses his face

At least the maladies have left, even if the horrors of Bonekeep have not.

Relaxing himself, he draws his sword and starts talking to it,

"Yes, we are free from that accursed place now ... I know what it did to you, I was the one spending time fixing you ... Yes, this place should be much better."

Baal continues talking to his sword as he watches his companions arrive

A stocky tengu walks into the lodge with a profound hunched back wearing mithril breastplate and dressed in black. He removes a jingasa from his head and wipes the sweat from his brow. A longbow is slung over his shoulder next to a sagging backpack. He glances around the room for a moment pondering to himself.

Black is a poor color choice in the desert. I wonder if there a privy nearby to change into?

He spots Baal speaking to himself and draws closer speaking in a formal tone with Tian Xia accent. He swiftly bows before his introduction.

"Good day sir. My name is Nokazi Stoneclaw, and I have come to assist on a special Pathfinder mission."

Baal looks up at the Tengu who just entered and hids a grimace.

"Nokazi Stoneclaw, eh? My parents had an exquiste sense of humor when the named me, I go by Baal, but my full name is Baal-Hostem." Baal pauses for a second and cocks his head towards his blade. "My sword is curious, he doesn't like chaotic individual, you wouldn't happen to be of that persuasion, would you?"

"Please to meet you...both. It is an uncommon question that you ask, but I will answer it plainly. I do not lean toward anarchy or order. I am told that I have a good heart, but in my profession it is considered a weakness."

Nokazi pours himself a glass of exotic tea and sits down on a stool.

"You have sparked my curiosity. Is that an intelligent sword in your hand? I have never laid eyes on such a marvel. Master Sword, how many deaths suffered by one's hand before they can no longer claim to have a good soul? The fact of the matter is that I am a hired killer, but I do not gain satisfaction from it. I do enjoy the lifestyle and rich rewards that it offers however."

"Good or evil make no difference to me, after all," Baal pulls out a Sigil of Asmodeus from his tunic and smirks, "Some of use care more for rules than anything else. Yes, my sword is Intelligent but the name he took for himself is Slayer of Chaos. I prefer to see the death of demons, which is why I joined the Silver Crusade, so our goals match nicely."

Baal pauses a moment longer before he looks back at Nokazi and continues, "You said you are a hired killer? How does that match with your apparent intellect? After all, it's not every hired killer that gets into a philosophical discussion when you sit down to meet someone."

Although it is difficult to discern, the tengu's beak blushes and smiles.

"Your words are too kind. I do not possess any mastery of philosophy or divine doctrine. I have made a small habit in my downtime to ponder the true desires of my heart and whether the greater good of my actions have any impact on future civilizations."

He pauses a moment to slurp his herbal tea.

"Self-realization is a long and arduous chore, but tea and meditation can help break down one's blind spots. I am beginning to think I missed my calling a pacifist monk. Too many rules though..."

Nokazi gazes into his cup and enters into a relaxed state of mind. Not trying to get preachy. He possesses indomitable faith in the Empyreal Lord Korada.

Baal gets up hurriedly to avoid the getting we from Fenrik's Ale.

"Good god, man! What's gotten into you, don't you know that we've been summoned for a mission?" Looking over at Nokazi, Baal says, "I'm afraid we'll have to continue our discussion at a later date, for the rest of you who have entered, My name is Baal, and Nokazi is the Tengu sitting in the corner."

Baal looks down at his sword, then replies "Yes, Slayer, I know you desire the blood of the Chaotic, I'm working towards getting you some. No, it's not nice to say that about Fenrik, even though he might be completely drunk. Yes, Tarquin is one of those alchemists that doesn't mean you have to say it out loud."

Baal looks up and sees several eyes on himself before he moves across the room.

How my irl group plays it is that My sword has telepathy, I don't. So I talk to My sword... but nobody else can hear it. Baal hasn't figured that he's talking out loud to his sword tho...

"Ah, all here, eh?" says Venture Captain Obo, striding into the room. "Let's get started then."

"I won’t mince words," he declares as he strokes his graying beard, standing over a low table. "This mission is of vital importance to the Pathfinders' ongoing success in the Worldwound. The Society has many powerful spellcasters, yet few can compare to the Riftwardens in feats of demon-banishing. That Abyssal scar spawns many demons, and the aid of capable abjurers would be a great boon in our march to Jormurdun, the newly discovered Sky Citadel. When our leaders requested the Riftwardens’ aid, we were denied; too many of their wizards are already committed to Mendev’s cause."

Obo's face betrays his chagrin, and he continues. "However, in saying no, they tantalized us with a means of securing their trust and alliance. Several Riftwardens led by Jahani Jodinaj and stationed in Azir were recently preparing for a dangerous task, but they recently stopped responding to magical missives. Were we Pathfinders to investigate these Riftwardens’ disappearance, we would have performed a great service to be repaid in kind. Ah," he notes with some pleasure as two servant carry platters of drinks and fruit into the room, "We have refreshments. May you find them to your pleasure."

As he begins peeling an orange, he frowns and adds, "We have one potential ally in this investigation, though I doubt he will leap at the chance to help. A contact of mine recently spotted the former Pathfinder Eando Kline in the sook of Azir. He has donned the guise of a copper merchant and likely prefers a degree of anonymity, but he is also a very well-connected man; if anyone knows what ills have befallen the Riftwardens, it is he. Should he not wish to speak, tell him, ‘Sasha Antif-Arah sends her regards--healthy and alive from Andoran.’

"Beyond that, be careful, Pathfinders. The sands of Rahadoum are unforgiving, and the Pure Legion is even less so."

Any questions?

Obo nods. "Pathfinders are accepted in Rahadoum, but like all others we are subject to the famous--perhaps infamous--Laws of Man. As you may know (Kn History, Local, or Religion check!), Rahadoum was wracked by decades of religious wars some time ago and, at the end of the conflict, banned all religion in the nation through the so-called Laws of Man. These laws are most heavily enforced in the capital, Azir, which is where you are headed. The Pure Legion is an elite militant organization that doles out punishment for violating the laws of man, from mere fines for the possession of forbidden texts to public humiliation or deportation for proselytizing or displays of divine magic. Needless to say, getting thrown out of Rahadoum altogether would not be helpful to your mission, so best avoid that." The Venture Captain takes a huge bite out of a peach and awaits the next question.

In response to Fenrik's Knowledge roll:

Fenrik searches his pounding brain for what he can recall of the region:

Spoiler'd for Brevity:

Azir is the capitol of Rahadoum. The entire nation upholds the Laws of Man, which make worshipping the gods illegal. The country adopted these laws following decades of religious wars, and although this has driven away the most devout merchants, Rahadoum is nevertheless the home to many influential businesspeople. Although often referred to as atheists, the people of Rahadoum accept that the gods exist but simply refuse to venerate them, believing that the price of worship is too great. An elite militant organization known as the Pure Legion enforces the ban on religion. Despite the Pure Legion’s best efforts, there is nevertheless a considerable trade in smuggled religious paraphernalia. Punishment for breaking religious law ranges from a fine for possession of forbidden texts to public humiliation or deportation for proselytizing or displays of divine magic.

The entire nation upholds the Laws of Man, which make worshipping any god frowned upon and basically illegal. This tooty-fruity stance happened after many decades of religious wars, and although this has driven away merchants and commerce, Rahadoum is nevertheless the home to many influential businesspeople- the rich always looking to make a buck....BURP!... Although some folks view them as atheists, the Rahadouminians accept that the gods exist but simply refuse to venerate them out of principle i think. I heard they believe that the price of worship is too great. They do have a militant bunch of legal enforcers called the Pure Legion who enforce the ban on religion. As good as the brown shirts...spits on floor are, they cant stop everything and religious items get smuggled in to feed the demand of some local groups. "Do you know how we would recognize the Pure Legion? Do they hide themselves to catch closet religious acts or are they uniformed or otherwise open about their position and intent?"

"Also, will our tiefling colleagues face any problems? Some people could mistake demon blood for demonic worship, much less the Riftwardens thinking they have dark ties."

"Any idea what we could come across over there? Are we talking demons that could have stuck it to those riftwardens? Or are there other parties at play here."

Obo shakes his head. "No, that's why we're sending you. I have, however, notified the majordomo of the Riftwardens' leader Jahani that you will be arriving soon. I suggest speaking with the seneschal." He consults a paper on the table and scribbles a note on another, handing it to Tarquin. "This is the address."

Tarquin wrote:
"Also if you could tell us where or how to find Eando...He might have taken a different name. Can you tell us how he looks or looked? Perhaps some hobbies he has if we really need to track him down?"

"Kline has almost certainly taken a different name. He is a rather elusive fellow. He's a Taldan man of average height with brown hair and... oh, well, I forgot about that!" He snaps his fingers again and another servant hands him a piece of paper. "This should prove helpful. This is a sketch of Kline. And like I said, word is that he's taken the guise of a copper merchant. Can't be that many in Azir, can there?" He hands this paper to Tarquin as well.

"Oh they're not secretive. They're a police force, not secret police. Very direct, uniforms and all. Even confrontational and exhibitionist, you might say. You'll know 'em when you see 'em."

"Hmm, good question," Obo notes, stroking his beard. "No, I do not think that will be an issue. Tieflings are rare in Rahadoum, as they are all over Golarion, but not unknown." He glances down at priest's covered sleeve. "I expect you have more to worry about than they."

Knowing he has to sober up some Fenrik's head starts to hurt with all of Kargens questions..."Just point out who is the enemy and when I can kill them..."

"Ah. That kind of Pathfinder," Obo grunts. "Murder is illegal in Rahadoum as it is most places. Remember, you're being sent to find people, not kill people."

Obo grunts again. "Just be careful is all. No need for you to get stuck in Azir's prison."

FYI that comment was not directed at you, Qwerty, just your character. :)

"Be polite, discreet, and charming. The usual. Kline parted ways with the Society some time ago, and as I understand the feelings that prompted his departure are still raw, but he is not what one would call an enemy of the society."

Obo plucks a fourth plum from a nearby platter. "Mmmm."

Nokazi is jolted out of his meditation from Fenrik's spilled ale and dries hhis feathers with the dirty bar rag. He whispers something to a servant.

"I believe you've had your last ale until the mission is complete, friend. We need your wits about you and not drowned by poison. Have some strong black mint tea. It is bitter but refreshing."

A kettle is brought on a tray with a ceramic cup. He pours hot water into a cup and drops in a metal egg with tiny holes. After a couple minutes, the water turns black and aromic. Nokazi offers the tea cup in trade for Fenrik's ale.

"Please, sip this instead."

Fenrik takes the cup and sips it...thinking long and hard about the taste..."Not bad. A tad bitter...you know what this needs? Some gnomish brandy." Fenrik says and takes a flask out of his jerkin and pours some brandy into the tea cup. He takes another sip. "Much better. Many thanks. Let us be off then."

"Alright, if there are no more questions, here's the coin for your travel expenses. Your ship leaves on tomorrow's morning tide." You have time to make any purchases necessary.

The voyage around the coast of Garund was entirely uneventful with smooth, easy sailing, and you have just docked in the Port of Azir--Port Godless. The heat of the midday sun accentuates the strange juxtaposition of salty sea air and dry, desert wind, just as the Rahadoumi caravans mingle with sailors from a dozen lands to make the markets of Azir a bustling, cosmopolitan hub of western Garund. The city’s edifices ranges from old constructions rejuvenated with elegant murals and exotic carvings to much newer buildings built with irregular angles and acute corners that combine to create an elegant mosaic of art and architecture. A vibrant soundscape overlays this visual effect, combining the sound of men haggling over baskets of dates, camels bleating in protest to their handlers’ commands, and the chorus of seagulls that soar overhead in search of an easy meal.

Ahead is a customs checkpoint that sits athwart the entry to the harbor market. Two Pure Legionnaires assist a port official by asking individuals to declare any religious items and making cursory checks inside carts, backpacks, and other containers. You see a holy symbol of Sarenrae confiscated and thrown in a pile of religious paraphernalia, while an elderly fellow's Asmodean tattoo is covered with a strip of cloth. There are only a few other passengers in line in front of you.

Let me know how each of you plan to handle this and make Sleight of Hand rolls as necessary.

Perception, take 10: 10 + 10 = 20

As the line progresses, Kargen watches the Legionnaires and evaluates the possibilities. He could try to hide his holy symbol and tattoo. If discovered though, he might be fined. It seemed like they were even allowing in tattoos as long as they were covered. What he could not risk was being barred entrance to the city. Their mission required they get inside, so perhaps honesty was the better part of valor here. It wasn't like they could take away his god anyway. The Old Man would understand. Sometimes a Hunter has to act disinterested to get closer to his prey.

The archer get to the front of the line and fishes out his wooden holy symbol. "Here you go, Legionnaire."

If Kargen sees that they're searching for tattoos or doing things like rolling up sleeves and the like, he will also declare his tattoo. Otherwise, he'll just declare the holy symbol.

As Fenrik makes his way to the front of the line he declares he has no holy symbol or religious iconography in his possession or inked on his skin. The only religious item he has is his gnomish brandy flask and if they want to take a pull from it he is inclined to let them.
