Hi everybody! I'm Andrew. I've gamed with some of you before, some I haven't yet had the pleasure. I'm looking forward to running your adventure!

This will be a Normal Mode PFS (not Core) game. We'll be starting as soon as folks are ready. Upkeep business:

1. This will be a party of 5 PCs and played at Subtier 5-6.

2. If you haven't done so already, please put a few of your stats into your character subheading. Please include current/total hit points, armor class (all three), CMD, saving throw modifiers, initiative modifier, and perception modifier. Feel free to add other stuff, such as per diem spells or ki points or expendable other resources.

2. On your character's page, please include a stat block or link or some other arrangement so that I can find your character's full stats in some fashion. Stat block is easiest for me but if you have a preferred arrangement (such as a link to your character sheet), that's fine too.

3. Introduce yourselves and your characters in-character in the gameplay thread.

Secondly, a few basic expectations:

1. A quick-moving thread is more fun for everyone. Please post at least once per day, and the more the merrier. Take your time and roleplay your hearts out, but do post regularly and keep the game moving. I'll make sure to do the same. If you know you'll be unable to post for a while, please let us all know here and consider giving march orders to the party (especially if we're in combat) and know that the game will likely still keep moving.

2. I've gotten pretty familiar with the PFS/Pathfinder rules over the years, but obviously I haven't dealt regularly with every class or situation. So if you are concerned that I've messed up somewhere in a way that really impacts gameplay (which is entirely possible), please feel free to raise the issue here in the Discussion thread or privately and I'll do my best to correct the issue. It's all about learning!

3. Please pay attention to text formatting and the thread tabs. Use Gameplay for gameplay and Discussion for non-gameplay discussion. Use the [b] tag and quotes for in-character speech and the [ooc] tag for out-of-character commentary. Use spoiler tags when necessary and open them only when appropriate.

4. Initiative! I've fiddled with a few different initiative systems and I think I've found one I like--you can act when your name is bolded at the bottom of my most recent initiative post. If you need to post out of turn due to limited internet access later or something similar, please put your whole turn in a spoiler so that everyone else (including me) can ignore it until it's your turn.

5. If you cast a spell on a baddie, please tell me the save and DC as appropriate so that I don't have to try to dig it out of your statblock. Same goes for other similar effects.

6. Have fun and be the awesome Pathfinders you are!

Andrew,

Thank you kindly for running this! I'm really looking forward to this!

So, I've used Skybek for mostly level 1-5 adventures, but I fear that now he is level 6, he is going to be getting into some very serious encounters as the scenarios get harder. He has been accumulating a lot of gold for a while. My chronicle sheets are home, but I am estimating he has upward of 10,000 gold pieces and I have not purchased any new magic items in a while. I am wondering what you all might suggest I purchase to help himself and consequently the rest of the party. At the moment, Skybek has the following magical items.

Magic Items:

pearl of power (1st level),
wand of cure light wounds;
breastplate +1,
light steel shield +1,
battleaxe +1,
cloak of resistance +1

Other Gear:

crossbow bolts (20), heavy mace, light crossbow, backpack, bedroll, belt pouch, crowbar, waterskin, wooden holy symbol of Tankard, wrist sheath, spring loaded (10 lb)

Please kindly give me your suggestions before we lose the opportunity to purchase needed equipment.

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking | Liberation Points: 4

Sure thing!

Here and here are two excellent posts with great advice in that respect. And, as Painlord advises, approximately ten percent of your wealth should go into consumables.

For a cleric, that means you should stock a sizable scroll library of various utility spells that you'll need in particular situations but probably shouldn't prepare (more than once) every day. I suggest picking through the list of cleric spells and buying scrolls of various things that might be handy now and again. I am particularly fond of the remove X spells for my scroll libraries. In fact, most of my characters have some even if they can't cast those spells--I just hand the scroll to somebody who can.

Looking at your particular list of shtuff and 10000gp, I would advise:

pearl of power (2nd level) -- 4000gp
Headband of Inspired Wisdom +2 -- 4000gp
Scrolls/consumables -- 2000gp (see Painlord's post and cover what you can)

After that, Ring of Protection +1 (2000gp) will help your AC, boosting your cloak will help your saves, a belt of giant strength or belt of mighty constitution will help your battle prowess. Jingasa of the Fortunate Soldier (5000gp) is also an excellent choice -- +1 luck bonus to AC plus 1/day convert a critical hit or sneak attack to a normal hit.

My charisma is currently 12. I need a 13 charisma for selective channeling. If I purchase a headband of mental prowess and increase my wisdom and charisma by +2, will this allow me to select selective channeling as feat when I reach 7th level?

Ok, I've checked over my chronicle sheets and I have about 21,000 gold to spend. Here is what I've come up with. Before I put this list to pen on my inventory tracking sheet, what are your thoughts?

Pearl of Power (Level 2) 4000 gold
Headband of Mental Superiority +2 10,000 gold
Belt of Giant Strength +2 4000 gold
Scrollls (see below) 2425 gold

Total = 20,425 gold

Endure Elements, 25 gold

Lol, I have a lot of thoughts:

This first is, holy Cayden Cailean, have you not spent any money since 3rd level? On to the real stuff:

Headband: if you're not super worried about having high DCs on your offensive spells (such that you prepare, anyhow) then this is an okay choice. That said, consider how much you're getting out of a boosted Charisma (an extra channel per day and the opportunity to exclude only 2 enemies from your channel) for the cost of a much more expensive headband and a precious feat. Alternatively, you could boost your primary casting stat (gaining you more spells, esp. high level ones, higher DCs, better concentration checks, etc. etc.) by +2 and saving a bunch of gold for other stuff or even by +4.

Belt: my alchemist (Boom, whom you've met) has turned more and more tanky over time, but I never boosted her Str above the starting 14 via a belt. I instead spent on a higher Int and just prepared Bull's Str regularly. Since they don't stack, I'd rather take the +4 from Bull's and give myself another spell slot to prepare it in. The pearl of power will help with that too. For the belt slot, I recommend the Con route -- more HP means you survive another round to hit again. (Alternatively, just spend on the headband for now.)

Scrolls: A good list. I might add: share language (2nd), invisibility purge (3rd).

Overall: With that amount of gold hanging around, you may consider upping your weapon. For 6000gp you could make is a +2 or +1 shocking or similar, for 16000gp you could make it +3 (counting as cold iron and silver) or +1 holy or similar. That would still leave you enough for a headband of inspired wisdom +2 or a pearl of power (lower DCs, but more flexible) plus 1000gp worth of scrolls. If you went the +3 weapon route, along with a bull's strength, your attack bonus would increase by 50% from +8 to +12.

Andrew, couple questions. Why the trip roll for croc, and does throwing a weapon provoke an AoO from the croc like using a ranged weapon would?

I may not be the DM, but I do know the answers...

a) That's what crocodiles get to do when they hit with their bite.

b) It absolutely does.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Cott: Druid (Saurian Shaman) Lvl 5 HP 48/48, AC: 18 (FF: 16, Tch: 13), Perception + 11, Initiative +4, F+7, R+4, W+8 Jenny: Raptor Lvl 5 HP 46/46, AC: 21 (FF: 17, Tch: 15), Perception + 5, Initiative +4, F+8, R+8, W+2

Crocs grab when they bite. That's a grapple check, and it's included in the croc's rolls. Not sure what the trip check was for.

-Posted with Wayfinder

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking | Liberation Points: 4

The statistics for a croc define a death roll as "d8+6 plus trip" in the same way it does for "plus grab" for the bite. So the trip roll is there as well.

There is no AoO because you cannot make AoOs while grappled, and the croc has the grappled condition as well as its target.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Cott: Druid (Saurian Shaman) Lvl 5 HP 48/48, AC: 18 (FF: 16, Tch: 13), Perception + 11, Initiative +4, F+7, R+4, W+8 Jenny: Raptor Lvl 5 HP 46/46, AC: 21 (FF: 17, Tch: 15), Perception + 5, Initiative +4, F+8, R+8, W+2

Ahh. Actually, I think I used death roll wrong the first time I summoned crocs. Upon rereading the ability while looking up the stats for the summon this time, it seemed like the croc wouldn't get to use it in the first round, when it initially grappled the enemy.

"Death Roll (Ex)
When grappling a foe of its size or smaller, a crocodile can perform a death roll upon making a successful grapple check. As it clings to its foe, it tucks in its legs and rolls rapidly, twisting and wrenching its victim. The crocodile inflicts its bite damage and knocks the creature prone. If successful, the crocodile maintains its grapple."

The way it's worded there made me think it has to start the round already grappling something, and if it makes a successful check to maintain the grapple, it can deathroll. I could be misinterpretting it though.

However, death roll doesn't include an attempt to trip. Ability says it does bite damage and knocks enemy prone, but doesn't mention needing an additional trip check.

It's under special attacks, not in the fluff text.

And hmm, I guess you're right. That makes sense from an action economy standpoint as well (it is a CR 2 creature, after all). I'll modify the damage (it won't be a huge difference in the end, I think).

And yeah, exactly that was my thinking. Seemed too powerful to get three attacks, grapple, and trip in a single round.
