Terrill refrains from commenting aloud about the priestess' description of Dunnamast, waiting instead for the fellow to make an appearance. If he's 'cheerful' for a Caydenite, I just hope he can abstain long enough to be useful in our mission.

The only other potential lead may be the murders of people who were backing Baldimar's research, but that's more what attracted our attention and led us to this temple in the first place.

"Of course, of course -- when the time is right, certainly," Saphira replies to Skybek. "Drinking contests are quite common, and you must know that a master brewer must taste the ale before serving! It's only polite. But we the Drunken faithful are also certain to make sure Cayden's holy beverages do not become a poison to the body or the will, and don't overindulge. At least not often."

She adds with a wink, "as I'm sure you know. But it is after sundown, after all."

Faeron's interjection removes her nascent happy mood. "Murders?! When? Where?! Do you think Baldimar was murdered too?"

Before anyone can reply, Timeon returns and says hesitantly, "Uh, Saphira? We can't find Dunnamast... anywhere. Did he go out or... something?"

Saphira nearly panics at this juncture and frantically asks for your help in looking for him. "What?! No, I don't think so! You, Pathfinders! Help us find him!"

Unsurprisingly, the Pathfinder party proves more adept at finding Dunnamast than slightly inebriated clerics. With only one part of the temple as yet unexplored, the group heads straight for the Cask Rooms, a series of three cellars packed with bottles, casks, and kegs of nearly every drink imaginable. On the second level Dunnamast is found wedged between a wall and a giant cask of rum. The priest smells like a flagon of bad grog is mightily unconscious.

DC 20 Heal:

"Oh dear..." Saphira replies with an ashen expression. Faeron leads the priestess back to the second cellar just as Skybek casts his spell.

Instantly, Dunnamast's unconscious face pales to a bone white and his body begins convulsing in seizure. Bishop and Faeron move immediately to restrain him and manage to pin down his flailing limbs. After a short while, the convulsions stop suddenly, Dunnamast's body going limp and his eyes rolling back in their sockets. His jaw opens and terrible words come pouring forth in a singularly unpleasant and gnashing tone.

Skybek translates in a stunned voice, the thick Dwarven accent mixing oddly with the character of the original.

I claim this mortal as my own,
His flesh is my flesh!
His blood, his bone, his thoughts, his soul,
All of this is mine!
Be gone oh you pitiful mortals,
You weary flesh clusters,

Look ye not unto my claims,
Or as well shall you suffer this man's fate,
And upon you I shall feast!
For mine is the damnation of a thousand nightmares!
Of the blistering flame of eternal waking!
Of the madness that gnaws!

The recitation stops as suddenly as it began and Dunnamast's form goes rigid. Small trickles of blood seep from his eyes, nose, and ears.

Sorry to vanish for a bit, was quite literally called out on an emergency at work.

"You're right, Bishop," Terrill says, "Xersus may be able to help us sort this out. Osprey said they'd be at Skyreach. This puppetry of a person must be stopped!"

Assuming the scenario allows for it (since Osprey said to contact him if we find anything), let's go to Skyreach and ask Xersus about this demonic possession thing.

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

The scenario in fact demands it!

Leaving a fretful Saphira behind, the team hurries back to Skyreach, where they find Osprey, Xersus, and a miserable looking quasit in shackles organizing notes in a study. A very brief description is all that Xersus needs before he interrupts: "We need to get there right away." Osprey obliges by teleporting everyone back to Cayden's Hall.

Saphira and the other clerics have since moved Dunnamast to the private meeting room on the west side of the building. Xersus makes a couple of quick checks on the unconscious and bleeding man before turning back to the group. "Alright, tell me everything. Explain your experiences. Quickly but in full."

Xersus listens intently, his face twisted with consternation. "I see," he says. He opens a black case filled with weird brass devices, crystals, incense, and other tools, and the proceeds to inspect Dunnamast’s body. He circles it, muttering to himself as he rapidly scribbles notes into a weathered looking tome. For ten minutes, the gnome studies his patient with a trance-like intensity, completely ignoring the worried questions Saphira asks.

Finally, he stops his pacing and turns to Osprey. "I need to perform an extraction." Osprey nods grimly.

Xersus turns to the group and explains. "Extraction involves psychic projection. I shall enter a trance in which I project myself into the psychic realm where Dunnamast suffers. I am not sure what is attacking him, and thus far have only ever heard tales of the dream realm's connection to shapeless, primordial demons. I seriously doubted their existence until this event. In order to succeed in this task, I will need all of your help. The realm of dreams and nightmares is both maddening and deadly, and I cannot guarantee your life or sanity should you choose to join me. Without your help, though, Brother Dunnamast will die."

"I volunteer, of course," says Osprey, who looks to the party expectantly.

Any volunteers?

Then he sets up his devices, incense, and assorted components and begins to weave a strange spell.

DC 28 Spellcraft:
The spell is some sort of powerful conjuration spell from the teleportation subschool, but beyond that it is impossible to identify.

Moments later, your flesh turns cold, vision blurs, and all color washes to dull gray. The surroundings fade and soon nothing exists but a dull, twilight void.

First, there is the unsettling sensation of falling, then a more comfortable floating. Slowly, dark shadows solidify and you see everyone hovering around Dunnamast’s still form. Your companions appear gray and washed out, though sparks of color ripple through them like tiny threads of lighting. Xersus is positioned at Dunnamast’s head, holding him gingerly by the temples, and Osprey is at his feet. Thick, ropey tendrils of color maneuver slowly through the unconscious priest's translucent form. Xersus begins a slow, peaceful chant. The cleric's body seems to relax, and the tendrils within him recoil steadily from throughout his body toward the base of his neck.

Suddenly, the cleric's jaw drops and the alien tendrils erupt from his mouth directly into the gnome's face, piercing his eyes and nostrils and mouth and exploding out the back of Xersus's head!

Too shocked to move, you watch as Xersus fades from existence. Somewhere in the background you hear muttering from Osprey, and now there's a sphere of shimmering opaqueness where he was floating. The most unearthly and terrible screech you have ever heard tears your attention downward, where you recognize a huge, cloudy nothingness from which extend four brilliantly-colored tendrils of smoke that pass through Dunnamast's still form and end is sharp, bony protrusions. You're under attack!

From behind his sphere, Osprey shouts, "Hold it off! I'll tend to Dunnamast!"

The Terror's cloudy form crystallizes, expanding to a terrible, inconceivable size: a veritable giant made entirely of the blackest shadow you have ever seen. Thin tendrils of shade reach out to you like chains, coming to bind you and sap your strength... make a Will save.

Faeron:
The Terror's cloudy form crystallizes, expanding to a terrible, inconceivable size: a mummy, wrapped in the blackest rags of shadow, with a gaping, empty maw that could swallow you whole. And as you watch, it's mouth descends and begins to close around you... make a Will save.

Skybek:
The Terror's cloudy form crystallizes, expanding to a terrible, inconceivable size: Tygora, the efreet, stands before you once more only a hundred feet tall--and Harnac is no where to be found. As you look up in awe, her face morphs into that of a frost giant, leering and grinning as it reaches a fiery smoking hand out to crush you once and for all... make a Will save.

Terrill:
The Terror's cloudy form crystallizes, expanding to a terrible, inconceivable size: a veritable mountain with six sticky tendrils and a massive single eye. Its cavernous maw full of teeth like crags leers at you, and you see a rent butterfly mashed between two of the grinning mountain-shards. It's thin, rubbery tentacles reach out for you with blinding speed, coming to sap your strength, imprison you, and keep you caged like your dead goddess... make a Will save.

Val:
The Terror's cloudy form crystallizes, expanding to an inconceivable size: a bloody, rent butterfly with a demonic visage--Desna's true and terrible form, filling the sky with her blackened and torn wings. She grins and exalts in your horror, her wings wrapping around you to trap you forever... make a Will save.

Oops, missed Timber.

Spoiler:
Timber sees the largest alpha wolf imaginable, coated in jet black fur and red eyes. Make a Will save.

@GM: Improved Critical Feat

Will Save Bishop: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Will Save Timber: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

ugh, can I make a Spellcraft check before deciding to use my reroll? Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Just trying to picture the mechanics (mostly for Good guy survival. I count Bishop as doing 77 damage. I'm guessing that was fluff for incoproreal. I count Faeron at 73 damage. The only DR I can't penetrate is Epic, Bludgeoning, and Slashing. Can I tell what made Faeron's shots work?"

Meanwhile Timber, if he's still alive, will take an AoO:
AoO: 1d20 + 14 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 14 + 6 = 40
Confirm: 1d20 + 14 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 14 + 6 = 34
DMG: 4d6 + 20 + 12 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 3) + 20 + 12 = 40 (Magic)

@ Bishop: Bishop is not able to identify the spell. Faeron's shots work about as well as Bishop's.

I'll wait on everything else.

I'll save my reroll then. I hope I don't regret that. Also, I know this is true for me, but a character this level, spread out over a few years of playing, likely has one time only use boons I'm probably forgetting.

Again, Terrill and Skybek feel their attacks repulsed, but Timber finds a way through--tugging at the Terror's foggy form. (Before the vision, that is.)

Timber and Faeron, make a Fortitude save. Still need a Will save from Val.
