Numair smiles indulgently at the men.

"Now, I am willing to overlook the beating you gave me, but I would like to know what is going on. I don't hold any personal malice towards you, after all; if we wanted you dead, we wouldn't have bothered to heal you. With that in mind, why don't you spill the beans, as it were?"

"Look mate, I don't even know who hired me. Just some tall lady in a cloak. Said to rough you up a bit, that's all," croaks the man in blue.

The red-jacketed man looks uncomfortable, as if there's more to his story. Ever so quietly, he mutters, "And I was blackmailed."

"A tall lady in a cloak. Fitting. A grey cloak too, I assume?" Eveline humphs, turning then to the red-jacketed man. "Blackmailed? Someone forced you to attack us? The same lady?"

Eveline seems reluctant to do judgment upon these thugs, in case they redeem themselves and seek redemption from their sinful ways.

Blue eyse Eveline carefully. "Yeah, sure, grey cloak. Yeah."

Red shrugs. "Dunno. Probably. Grey cloaked, yeah." A sudden realization and wave of emotion crosses his face. "But please! You have to help me! Iomedae is my goddess, but I still have family in Rahadoum! She's been threatening to set the Legion on my mother! Please, you have to convince them my ma isn't a believer! She's faithful only to the Laws, just like the Legion is!"

"A legion of what now? Elaborate," Eveline inquires, not knowing of what this said Legion is. She knows what and where Rahadoum is, and how it's the Land of Man, devoid of religious activities. Eve herself never plans on traveling there. "Regardless, if what you say is true, this lady has connections abroad. But why would a Rahadoumian woman targets pathfinders' couriers? Oh right, religious artifacts and tidbits..."

Eveline ponders, and moves to the side to get a moment of solitude.

"Well, the plot certainly thickens... I wonder why she is targeting Pathfinders in particular? After all, in this part of the city, there is no end of people trading in religious relics..."

Lionel grunts, clearing his throat after the long silence. "Now, I'mma seein' this from tha prism o' tha things we done for tha good ol' Society, but we coulda... liberated somethin' o' theirs? In tha name of cooperation'n'all, of course."

Looking around, then stopping his gaze on the poor sob in front of him, Lionel sighs. "Yo mamma, how we gon' get ta her? "The Pure Legion, of course! You know, the ones who enforce the Laws of Man? No worship and whatnot?"

"Pathfinders? Who? She's been making me do all kinds o' jobs, can't keep it all straight..."

Lionel's line of questioning causes the man to slump. "Well, I dunno... but... she'll be killed..." He begins crying softly.

Eveline comes back to the group. "Alright, here's what we do. Take all weaponry off of those thugs, they certainly won't need them. And possible magic items, be that a payment for their crimes. And, if you two," Eveline says, pointing at the two men accompanied with a stern gaze, "leave your life of crime forever, I won't come back to get you and make you regret."

"Should we get this cloaked lady captured, she shouldn't be able to falsely accuse your mother of worship. So help us help you. Do you know where this lady is now, or how to contact her?"

Eveline seems very earnest, and really does want to help the thugs get their lives back on track. She has, however, slim hopes of that happening.

If the thugs are unable to help:
Eveline scoffs at the men, flicking her hand in a mocking manner once their arms and armor have been taken off including all possible magic items. "Be on your way then, and hope our paths cross again. We must go see our next lead now, must have had a long wait."

Neither man is able to help--even the blackmailed gentleman is only ever left notes and money--and give up their gear without too much fuss. Besides some mundane equipment, they each carry a dose of medium spider venom.

Friar Horace is a thin, precise man with a hawkish nose. His description of events is precise and to the point. "Aye, I saw what happened. They attacked that Pathfinder right over there," the friar says as he makes a curt gesture to a patch of dirt in the alley behind the alehouse. "They were wearing grey cloaks, but I don’t think they were guards. Your friend was holding her own, but then someone shot her from that rooftop." He makes another precise gesture pointing to a building across the alley. "I called out for Brothers Ellis and Freel and grabbed my staff, but by the time I got outside, it was all over. We were able to help your friend back into the alehouse and Brother Freel went to fetch the Greycloaks.

"I didn't see what happened to the relic your friend was carrying--they must have grabbed it while I was getting my staff. When Brother Freel tried to follow the thugs, he found their cloaks discarded at the delivery entrance to the bakery. After that, things open up to the market proper and it's almost impossible to follow anyone out there."

I must wonder how daft the greycloaks must've been to use such an easily replicated cloak as their insignia... anyone could get a cape of grey fabric and pose as a guard," Eveline rants, shaking her heads once before turning to the friar. "Precise and to the point, thank you."

Since Eveline doesn't come up with any questions to ask, she ponders about the scene and climbs up to the roof to see where the arrow really came from, and in case there are some footprints or whatnot.

Eveline swiftly climbs back down and dusts off her wardrobe before joining the rest of the group.

"It's very likely those two thugs we encountered earlier were the same who assaulted the courier on this alley, just with some grey cloaks on. Though who's the third person on the roof? My guess is this dark, tall woman we've been hearing about. Regardless, let's head to Jarid's place."

Jarid's shop proves a little more difficult to find than the Alehouse, and the sun is beginning to descend by the time the third attempt at directions produces a small hobby-hole stall deep within the bazaar of the Gods Market. On the front of the stall, a large sign proclaims "Estelle’s Last Hope Mercantile." A smaller sign below, obviously in a different hand, advertises "All merchandise verified authentic," and in even smaller text below that is written "No Refunds." The stall is filled with a variety of unique items bearing various claims, each less likely that the last. 'Cayden Cailean's Lost Loincloth' sits on a shelf next to a clumsily preserved, half-eaten apple claiming to have been discarded by Norgorber on the day of his ascension.

A portly Keleshite man with a thin chin-strap beard sits behind a narrow counter.

As if Eveline and Numair had summoned him with their words, both stop in their tracks as a shaggy-haired, unkempt fellow steps out of a tavern across the way. The Pathfinders exchange a look and turn back to the main, taking a couple of steps in his direction. He looks up from his coin purse, sees the approaching figures, and bolts down the street!

Chase time! I am sorely tempted to run this using the modified chase rules introduced in Season 5, but I have decided to follow protocol and run as written. For reference, here are the chase rules summarized:

Chase Rules:
It takes a move action to move through a single square. When a character exits from a square, he must choose one of that square’s two obstacles to face before moving to the next square. Instead of exiting a square, a character can choose to take another action not directly related to navigating the chase’s course, such as casting a spell or drawing a weapon.

A character may attempt to move three squares during his turn by taking a full-round action. That character must overcome both obstacles on the square he is leaving. In this case, if a character fails either obstacle check by 5 or less, he only moves one square forward and his turn ends. If a character fails either obstacle check by more than 5, he cannot move at all that turn. A character unfortunate enough to fail two obstacle checks in a turn becomes mired in his current square. A mired character must spend another full-round action becoming unmired, effectively losing his next turn.

A character can also choose to make a ranged attack or cast a spell during his turn in a chase. If the action is a full-round action, he can’t move at all. Use the number of squares and their established distances (in this case, 30 feet) to determine ranges as necessary. The terrain where the chase takes place might provide the target partial or even full cover or concealment. A character can only choose to make melee attacks against targets that are in the same square.

A base speed of 20 feet induces a -2 penalty on all rolls, a 40 foot base speed provides a +2 bonus on all rolls.

Reed tries really hard to be convincing, but doesn't get very far with a guard getting towards the end of a long day. Numair decides that's for suckers and jumps right through the window and practically leaps over the ivy wall behind. He finds Lionel already ahead of him but doesn't slow down, clambering atop the burly Calistrian and scrambling up the fence. On the other side, he finds himself among the shocked guests of a tea party--but his quarry is in sight at a nearby pond!

Eveline follows Numair through the window and... does something!

Barnel gives a small yelp when he sees Numair so close behind, and tries to hurry across the stepping stones, slips, and has to swim for the other side in his hurry!

2d20 ⇒ (15, 6) = 21

On the far bank, he scrambles up like a wet dog and splashes into the bustling market beyond.

Scarab Sages

'The Grandidierite Sage' Male Half-Elf Sorceror 9 (HP 74/74) (AC 16/10/16) (CMD 12) (Fort +8, Ref +5, Will +8) (Init +6) (Perception +22)

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27.
CMB: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21.

Spurred on by the nearness of his quarry, Numair bows to the hostess of the tea party, then muscles his way through!

Grand Lodge

Male Human Ranger 2 HP 20/20 | AC 19/13/16 | F +4, R +6, W +1 (+2 on Fear vs Humans)| Init +5| Perc +6

Numair is a badass this go around. ;)

Having learned by following Eve's example, Reed maintains a low profile and casually inches his way out.

Will take my one square of movement and hope for better things.

Scarab Sages

Female Halfling Ranger 2/Paladin 2 | HP 31/32 | CMD 18 | AC 21, t 15, ff 17 | Fort +10 Ref +10 Will +8 (+2 vs. fear) | Init +6, Perc +10 | Active conditions: Darkvision

No, Eveline will not use her second move action to try and pass the second square. There's a reason for that. Now, on round 2, she will use a full-round action to try and pass both challenges of square two. If I would have gone further, I couldn't have done this. Trust me, I've looked at the layout and planned all my actions already. ;)

Eveline takes a breather before dashing among the bathers, gaining enough speed on the slippery surface, almost gliding along the surface, and jumps over to the ivy wall, swiftly climbing over it.

Full-round action, attempt both challenges.

Climb: 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 - 1 - 2 = 6
Reflex save: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 - 2 = 21

Rerolling climb, GM stars to good use.
Climb: 1d20 + 8 - 1 - 2 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 8 - 1 - 2 + 4 = 25

Eveline bypasses the embassy wall and the chelish tea party, traveling on eaves above the occurrences. She gets easily to the long pond.

The Exchange

Male Human Cleric 3
Stats:
HP:39/39 [AC:18(12), T:12; F:16(18)] [F:6, R:3, W:6] [Perception +2, Init +9]

Climb: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 4 = 10

Lionel climbs on the wall, but doesn't quite manage to get a stable grip.

Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 2

As he attempts again, he draws the attention of a nearby guard, who begins approaching. "Heh. Now, this ain't what it seems like, brotha!"

Mired. Damn you and your GM stars :)

@ Eveline: fair enough!

With a burst of speed and uncanny litheness, Numair makes the far bank before Barnel can get out of the pond. The man scrambles up the bank and tries to run again, but the sorcerer grabs a fistful of the man's wet cloak and doesn't let go. Soon, the rest of the party catches up and Barnel has to switch to a different tack.

Out of initiative!

"Alright, look, I don't know who in the Nine Hells you are. Whattaya comin' after me for?"
