The heat can be felt by Brevon as far away he is. The smell of burnt flesh and hair hangs in the air. There is something dreadfully familiar about it.

He is moving swiftly even before Anevia falls, glaive gripped firmly. Inside, it doesn't take long to find the source of the attack, a hulking figure with a large weapon. He looks as though he could walk over any of them.

"Guard the children!" he yells, brandishing his glaive sternly. "Lay down your weapon!" he barks, praying he displays more courage than he feels.

Rukzha answers Brevons questions happily. She loves asking and answering questions. "Sadly, the Blackwing Library, where the children we rescued earlier are fortified, is in the other direction. We are currently trying to find Anevia's wife and the Eagle Watch she is part of."

"There were Quasits tormenting these people. They are evil familiars who apparently love to play with and torment their victims rather than outright killing them."

Magic users generally have strong minds, that's needed to control the magic after all. He might have no trouble resisting my hex. Sadly I don't have any of my major spells left, but hopefully the lesser web will be enough. "People like you give half-orcs everywhere a bad name!" Rukzha says in cold fury. Nevermind that they've met more twisted and corrupted humans than her own kind so far, it still upsets her. She proceeds into another guttural powerful chant, sounding a bit similar to the one she used against the Quasits, but somehow more muted. Her fists clench tightly together as she cants.

Anevia's cry of pain echoes through the open door, and at the sound, Kelumarion bolts inside, pausing only to receive a blessing from his caller. Arrika, standard action cast guidance.

Seeing the crazed half orc man attacking the others, Kelumarion returns the favor, trying to close his iron jaws around the man's leg. ::Arrika! Protect the younglings!:: Outside, Arrika sends grim wordless agreement through their mental link and grips her spear tight, trying to keep an eye on both the battle inside and the huddle outside.

As I use them more I do get a better grip on how to do it, but there could be a backlash too... "That should help some, but you suffered quite the serious burn."

Rukzha looks towards Elriel once she's done with Anevia and walks closer to the half-orc. "Maybe we can question him? Should bind him up first though. I'll make sure he doesn't pass on, in case we decide to do that. Might be nice to know why he was hiding here and what he knows of Irabeth. Anevia, what do you think?" Elriel wrote:
Elriel steps up kicking chairs out of the way. His blade on the alf-orc's throat, he asks Anevia, "Any reason why this scum should live a second longer?"

"No... he had already a second chance and this is how he used it. His name is Vagorg, one of several criminals Irabeth tracked down during her time in the River Kingdoms, and he is a cultist of Xoveron... Irabeth managed to capture him before he was able to burn down an entire neighborhood in Tymon and delivered him to the authorities... We had completely forgot about him until this moment..." Anevia has difficult to talk while Rukzha tends her wounds with her 'strange' healing powers. After she is finished, Anevia nods to her and thanks before grabbing her crutch and joining Elriel in his search for any clue about Irabeth's whereabouts. "... thinking about it I think Vagorg's purpose was simple revenge..."

Elriel finds (and Rukzha identifies them) two potions of invisibility, a wand of ray of enfeeblement (CL 3rd, 11 charges), a ranseur of the gargoyle, and 42 crowns (gp).

Ranseur of the gargoyle:
A ranseur of the gargoyle appears to have a head crafted of obsidian, but is in fact as hard and resilient as steel. This weapon functions as a +1 ranseur that grants a +4 bonus on disarm checks rather than the typical +2 bonus a ranseur grants. Up to 5 times per day as a swift action, the wielder of a ranseur of the gargoyle can cause its skin to harden for 1 round, gaining a +2 enhancement bonus to its natural armor score.

Anevia moves to her bedroom and, after opening a secret niche, returns to the living room with a small note and a sack. "It is from Irabeth... she is asking me to meet her in the Defender's Heart when I return! She is alive! She also left us a couple potions..." She smiles in clear contempt, oblivious to the fact that the note really doesn't mean that Irabeth was still alive. She hands the sack to Rukzha, which contains two potions of cure moderate wounds and three potions of invisibility.

Do whatever you want with Vagorg. As by her conversation it looks like Anevia would prefer him to die, but it is up to you!

Brevon tenses as Elriel places his blade on Vagorg's throat. But Anevia's explanation gives him pause. "A second chance," he says from the doorway. "So he was delivered into the light, only to fall back into shadow." He steps across the room. "The line between them is a fragile, small thing, enough for any of us to stumble across."

An image comes to mind. Candlelight in a dark hall. He dismisses it immediately.

"But to return willingly...Elriel," he kneels, resting his weight on his glaive. "This man has committed terrible acts, but he may yet serve a purpose in this world. Is this really what you want?" Tag Elriel

Brevon examines the weapon and iconography. "Let's see... Xoveron, the Demon Lord of Gargoyles. Enjoys impalement."

He lifts the ranseur. "A strong weapon." Casting detect evil on the ranseur.

Rukzha stands up from the unconscious body of the half-orc and looks over to the paladin. She removes her mask and her eyes bore into the man. "That's in the code of a paladin of Sarenrae right? Rukzha flinches slightly as Elriel slits the man's throat. She's still not used to effortless killing, even with all the chaos and combat of the last few days. Such confidence and strong determination. That sure is admirable.

"These healing potions are quite potent. They will help recover even from severe wounds. I can heal myself with my powers if I go take damage. So I suggest someone else carry the healing potions potions. Maybe the two of you take one each? If you continue going toe to toe with the enemy it's good to be able to recover in a hurry." She looks to the two men who went into melee with the half-orc?

"These other potions are potentially even more interesting than the healing potions. They let you turn invisible for three whole minutes. They would be great for sneaking past enemies, scouting or getting off a surprise attack. Though sneaking past enemies is going to be hard with the throng of people we have along with us. In combat the invisibility will stop functioning upon attacking, but it can still be crucial." Rukzha speaks with passion and fervor about the magic contained within the bottles. She loves talking about interesting subjects and magic is certainly interesting to her. "Not quite enough for carrying one each, but some of one can have one at least." Brevon and Rukzha about Xoveron:
Xoveron is the demon lord of gargoyles, gluttony, and ruins. Some believe that the Horned Prince can look out of the stone eyes of any gargoyle perched atop a ruined building to watch the world below, and that from these vantage points he selects those he wishes to torment. Whether or not this is true, the monstrous gargoyles of the world certainly venerate horned Xoveron as their lord. Sacrifices to the demon require bodies to be cast from high windows or impaled atop spires under the open sky—always in ruined locations, for inhabited cities are anathema to the Horned Prince. His goal is nothing less than the emptying of the cities of the world so that he may reign over the resulting desolation. Xoveron is the patron not only of gargoyles, but also of the dreaded nabasu demons, and he often sends the latter into the Material Plane to spread his cruelties. Xoveron appears as a four-armed, four-headed gargoyle.

Brevon doesn't detect the weapon as evil, only its wielder. It also appears to have no connections to Xoveron at all, besides its name.

Once you have finished the discussion about the loot, let me know and I'll move us along! Rukzha, about Brevon's paladin code, you were able to fully remember it. I'll post it in the discussion thread so we can... discuss... it similar to what we did with Sabrina, so we know our boundaries.

Brevon grasps the ranseur firmly in his hand, then twirls it lightly in the air. "So, the Horned Prince deigns to extend his wicked claw into the light of day. He shall find his own weapons turn against him as his machinations are bathed in the light of the burning sun. This will be put to proper use."

He also collects a cold iron dagger, tucking it into his belt, before stepping out into the light of day.

"This man worshiped Xoveron, the Lord of Garagoyles and Ruins. That one seek to bring destruction to all of civilization so he can rule over the ruins left behind. What twisted views... While he might succeed in turning Kenabres into a ruin, all hope is not lost. There is still a lot we can do to salvage what's left. Even more so if we join up with the eagle guard. Let's go." Rukzha puts back on her mask as they start walking.

Outside she pulls Arrika aside. "We found quite a few invisibility potions, five of them. You take one as well, who knows when it might come in handy?"

Thank you, Rukzha, Arrika replies with a nod, tucking one of the potions into a fold of her dress. She had stayed outside with Sabrina to see to the others, but all had been quiet...except inside her mind, where the waves of Kelumarion's righteous anger had washed over her at encountering the ambusher. He had rejoined her just as Elriel's appeal to Pharasma had echoed out. ::One less to worry about.:: Both minds were a mix of grim satisfaction at the execution...and regret at the wasted second chance. ::He received the wages of his actions.::

So, we go to the Defender's Heart next? Kelu said you'd found a note from Irabeth...that's good, at least, right? It means she survived the attack at the festival... The last sentence is in hushed tones as Anevia limps out of the small house. Hope was a rare thing in the ruined streets; it wouldn't do to crush whatever hopes Anevia may have had for her missing wife. Joining with the crusaders will be good - we'll be able to get these people to better help, maybe even those we'd hidden away at the Blackwing. And maybe we can help the crusaders, or seek their aid in bringing down those safe houses of the Baphomet cultists. Or maybe they'll cast us away, if there's more who share her father's views... Even in her mind, she carefully avoids the late Lord Prelate's name, as if simply its mention could bring him back upon her from beyond the grave.

You leave Anevia's house behind and move north once more, sticking to the Dusbal Street for the most part of the way. This part of Kenabres seems to have been somehow spared from the general destruction but the bodies and occasional looters are still present, like two tieflings in the distance that flee from your group as soon as they are spotted. Thirty minutes later you arrive at the Defender's Heart.

The stout stone structure managed to survive the fall of Kenabres with ease, and also a bit of luck. From southwest to northwest there is a huge rift that ends only in the darkness below, much like the one you had fallen a couple days before. Even so, the structure seems perfectly stable. Many tents are scattered around the former inn, belonging to many known mercenary groups and the main entrance is protected by a debris barricade. Crusaders, soldiers, and men from the city watch look as you approach and more soldiers with crossbows are visible at every third window.

A crusader moves towards you, probably to bar your passage, but as soon as he recognizes Anevia he bows slightly and lets you pass. Anevia lets out a joyful cry as Irabeth appears, quickly coming to greet her once word of her return spreads. The women embrace tenderly before Anevia introduces her wife, Irabeth, to you. "These, Ira, are the men, and women, responsible for keeping me, and all these others, alive! I feel that I was lucky in the end."

Irabeth is a strong and beautiful half-orc woman, clad in a golden crusader armor with symbols of Iomedae. Her armor is worn, showing clear sign of intense usage in the last days. She offers her gauntleted hand to you while talking and thanking. "It is difficult for me to find enough words to properly thank you for bringing Anevia back to me safe and I'll gladly swear to assist you in whatever way I can." She notices the commoners following you and orders one of the other crusaders to guide them inside to provide for them before continuing, Anevia close to her arms. She then motions you to follow her inside, continuing to talk along the way. "I'm now in charge of the Eagle Watch, well, at least until the Mendevian army arrives to help us to reclaim the city. Word got out about the attack on Kenabres but I also heard that Nerosyan and other cities along the border are facing their own plights... so far, I'm certain that none of the other border cities have suffered as great a defeat as Kenabres."

Inside the inn, you find the place crowded with survivors and soldiers alike, even if pretty organized. The big common room converted in barracks for the soldiers and the kitchen working to feed all of them. You see wounded people everywhere and a couple soldiers carrying a body from upstairs, probably someone who did not resist his wounds. "Kenabre's wardstone has been destroyed and, as a result, the entire network of wardstones has diminished in power to a shadow of its former strength... I thank Iomedae daily for the inherent disorganization of the enemy for if the demons had made as focused an attack on Nerosyan as they did on Kenabres, things would be even direr." She arrives at a large room on the second floor, probably a master room that is now converted to her office. She points to a mismatched chairs for you to sit before continuing to the other side of the table. "Now... I'd like to know all about your own fight so far... I know you are tired but I think you can spare a couple more minutes before anything else..."

Despite the grim surroundings, Arrika can't help but smile as the couple embraces. Everything else in Kenabres may have been going wrong in the worst way...but at least here something was going right. And the joy she feels is not only her own - a second warm wave of contentment rolls wordlessly in her mind, and she feels a gentle headbutt against her side.

At Irabeth's bidding, Arrika follows to the improvised office, sitting and then slumping in the worn chair; she hadn't realized until that moment how much the previous days had worn on her, though she felt...stronger, somehow, more able to bear the weight as it grew. I'm Arrika Telryn, of the Neverrun clan, she begins shyly.

I was at the festival when the rifts opened...we were caught in one, and ended up in some caverns below the city. Anevia fell with us - that's how she got hurt. We managed to find some mongrelmen living below, who gave us a safe place to rest, and we found a cell of a demon cult working down there as well that we took out. There was word of some safe houses they had in the city...they were working with Areelu Vorlesh - At the name, Arrika makes a small gesture of warding, calming herself before continuing.

We made it back to the surface last night, and took refuge in the Riftwardens' old headquarters. One of the Riftwardens is there, Aravashnial, and a few others we'd found being attacked as well. Then we came to see if we could find you... Here, Arrika blushes slightly with a small smile. Anevia missed you. And we found some others along the way, who hadn't managed to make it to safehouses - will they be able to find a place here?

Elriel sat down and offered minor comments as Arrika recounted their miraculous journey.

He showed the scale of the silver dragon to the half-orc as further proof of their survival.

He also hoped that the Eagle Watch could take over the task of looking out for survivors.

He then added, "As we have told other before, we are not Kenabres' saviors but we humbly offer to do our part. Do you know anything of these cultist safehouses?"

He sighed, "It seems you're in charge here so where is the biggest fire; what is your immediate need?"

Before she answered, he looked at his companions, "We're all still in this together, right?"

Okay, adding an alchemist fire to my inventory.

Brevon's heart skips a beat at the site of the rift and the infinite blackness of its depths. The sheer magnitude of the void below seems enough to overtake the world in a single breath. What hope is there against a force such as this? he wonders silently to himself, knowing better than to voice his doubts during such a dark time.

The site of the reunion between Anevia and Irabeth is heartwarming, however. Two lovers, separated by tragedy and believing the other dead, seeing each other now as if for the first time. He knows that longing, that craving to see her face. It is a burning desire hotter than any mortal soul can bear.

And yet he is still here.

Smiling through his own heartache, he congratulates these women, brushing off any suggestion that he is the reason they are now together. "I am barely more than a stranger to her saviors."

________

Inside, he listens with great interest to Arrika's description of events. "Truly, I would swear it a miracle that you have survived, except that I have witnessed with my own eyes your bravery and valor."

He nods in agreement as Elriel speaks. "Truly. Irabeth, The Inheritor is fortunate to count you among her holy warriors. I am Brevon Sabor, a brother in light, though my devotion is sworn to Sarenrae, bless Her fair and noble name. I hail from Karcau to the south, but have been sent by The Everlight to fight back the darkness. I would be honored to join these heroes in their efforts to protect and rebuild Kenabres. "I'm glad you two could be reunited." Rukzha responds to Irabeth's thanks. "I'm Rukzha Kerzuk. I used to live with the Order of Heralds, though I'm not sure you could count me among their number as I'm not even a squire."

Rukzha is moved by the emotion that is clearly displayed between the two women. She's filled with mixed emotions, glad for them, jealousy for what they have and somehow their desire is contagious and she feels some of that as well. I wish I had something similar. I feel so alone sometimes. Just me, these powers, dreams and voices in my head. I want to feel something more, from a real person. She glances sideways over at Elrierl. Speaking off... Elriel is so quick thinking and confident. I could do a lot worse and we've been through so much together. An image flashes through her mind of touching the heavily wounded Elriel after the fight with the mad crusaders to patch him up again.

Rukzha does her best to explain her side of the story. She feel comfortable enough explaining things to Irabeth given what has happened. Still, talking about her past doesn't hold the same interest to her as new exciting topics and as such her tone is more even as she quickly goes over the details. "As for me, I was with a group from the Order of Heralds when the city was initially attacked. Sadly I got separated from them in the chaos that followed. The group was lead by Terrace Del'Ven. Do you know what happened to them? Are they here perhaps? I didn't fall with your wife and the others down below, but after being seaparated from Terrace and the others I made my way down some tunnels to hide, only to be captured by the cultists Arrika mentioned. After being rescued, I've done my best to help battle the demons and keep us alive with my magic. I might not have the martial prowess of most members of the Order, but I'm still able to help out with my powers. My foster father, Ghortuk Scarskin, taught me the foundations, but sadly he is no longer with us." She winks at Irabeth at the last comment. It should be safe to mention Ghortuk right? She should know him and not be wary because she knows. After all his magic did help her out quite a bit.

Suddenly her voice gets a lot more passionate as they turn to topics of what to do next. "Speaking of Ghortuk... Given that we now know that the Topaz Solutions hides one of the safehouses for the cultists of Baphomet, I'm pretty sure the guy there was the one who told the Inquisitors to take him. The presence of the safehouse, along with two others, were revealed in a note from the cultists. I don't know what the situation is here exactly. But I think investigating those safehouses might be a good idea. I'm not going to back down from helping out in any way I can. Now where did we put that note..." Her words trails off as she looks for the note and tries to figure out who was currently carrying it so they could show it to Irabeth.

Here, Arrika replies, withdrawing the cultists' note from her belt pouch and handing it to Irabeth. Giving the half-orc a moment to peruse it, she sits back again. I agree with Rukzha - unless you know of something more pressing, Irabeth, I think these cultist safehouses are top priority. They've already accomplished their chief goal...but I'll take eliminating any concern we can. We don't need their kind trying to hinder any more of our work.

Tired, sore, a girl with nothing but a few magic tricks in far over her head...but I'm still using the word "we", aren't I? I'm still in, Elriel...I don't think I could go back to sitting and letting my fate rest in others' hands. Besides, Kelumarion would never let me live it down. The feline, lying on crossed paws, lets out a short huff of a laugh. And Brevon, we'd be glad to have you as well...Kenabres needs every sword it can get, and so do we.

Elriel nods his approval, not that it was needed, as the rest of the companions pledge their hearts to the fight.

"It seems we are all in this wherever this takes us. I'm glad to have you by my side. I can think of worse ways to die than trying to stem this tide."

He looks at Irabeth and Rukzha, "I'm relatively new to the town so I will defer to you on which one our next target should be. But I agree that the safehouses should be strongly considered."

Since your posts and questions intertwine, it would be confusing to answer separately... I'll try to answer all your questions though.

Sabrina is strangely quiet for the whole time, appearing to be lost in her own thoughts and doubts. Once you finish to tell your story, Irabeth looks at her, almost as if waiting for any report. She then ponders about your words. "Terendelev shall be remembered forever in our hearts for I've never met a more loyal and altruistic being... her death weights heavily in my heart, even if I'm glad that in her last effort, she was able to save you all. I'm also delighted to learn that the First Descendants of Neathholm helped you... I shall send some Eagle Watch knights down to contact Neathholm and work out an alliance."

Irabeth accepts the note from Arrika and even if she sighs, you are able to see determination in her eyes. "I saddens me to know about these cultists... the Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth are, in my opinion, one of the most dangerous elements of the enemy. They have spies everywhere and have apparently been among us for decades. Only recently has proof of their presence been manifesting. I personally managed to root out one of their more powerful members, the leader of a group called the Hammers of Heaven. We all thought of Staunton Vhane as a model crusader, but as far as I was able to discern, he's been working for the demons for decades. There's even evidence he may have been the one to betray Drezen 75 years ago. They knighted me for that discovery, but I'm still not sure why, since he slipped through my fingers and is out there still, causing who knows how much more damage..." Irabeth trails off here for a moment before she shakes her head to clear her thoughts.

"I agree with you, Rukzha, for as long as the Templars still have their safe houses, they are still a force to be feared in Kenabres and we have already plenty enemies... I could send a group of crusaders there but if you could take a look at them, I'd like to employ my crusaders elsewhere, firstly in an escort mission to bring here those still in the Blackwing... would you be interested? I can reward you for this."

"Meanwhile, I invite you to rest if you need. I'll arrange a room for you and also food... it is not much though. Along the soldiers, crusaders, and common people, we have a couple merchants with us who could provide you with a good amount of equipment. The Eagle Watch has not authority to impose martial law and to keep the morale, we've done our best to avoid wholesale requisition of gear... there are also plenty clerics and acolytes that should provide you with restorative magic." She then looks at Rukzha. "And yes, the Order of Heralds are among us, even if many have perished in the attack."

Elriel is content with how things turned out so far with the Eagle Watch. He was hoping to be able to help out, even though he was an outsider but this didn't seem to matter to Irabeth.

Taking a leadership role never given to him, he states, "Yes, we will gladly investigate the safehouses for you and there is no need for payment. We owe our lives to the silver dragon and this is just us trying to repay her."

He shakes his head, "For some reason, she thought we were worth saving. I just hope we can live up to that."

He then adds, "Although no payment is requested, we would appreciate you taking care of the refugees. There's a special little girl in the library who's been through a lot and I don't want to see her get hurt."

He looks at his companions, "Do we need to visit the quartermaster or are we ready to go?"

His concern for the girl is touching. Rukzha thinks.

"While I agree with Elriel that payment shouldn't be needed, any equipment we can use to help battle the demons would still be very welcome. As you've said, many have fallen in the battle. Perhaps some of those left behind something we could use? It would be sad to barely succumb to our enemies if we could have succeeded with better gear that was left behind here."

Her face turns apprehensive as she asks her next question. "About the order... What about Terrace, is he here?" We weren't particularly close, but he did lead the squad that rescued me, so I owe my life to him. "And Alexis Terrabane? She was also with the group Terrace Lead." I hope she made it, she helped she me so much after what happened with the inquisitors. We've shared so much. Alexis was probably Rukzha's closest friend among the order. "And Balthor Illysian? He wasn't with the same group, but it would be nice to know about him as well." He is still the one responsible for me in the Order. Or is it was now? As the steward he did manage everyone not directly in the military part of the Order. It would be nice to see his always smiling face again. Though is he still smiling after all that has happened?

What time of the day is it? Did most of it pass so we should rest, or do we still have plenty of time left? Rukzha would certainly benefit from resetting her spell slots, but she won't insist/suggest to go to rest if only a small fraction of the day have passed.

Brevon twists his face in dismay at these revelations. "I am sickened to learn that the agents of darkness have taken on false guise as guardians of the light. Faith in allies has always been necessary in conflict, and now it seems we do not even know who our allies are. Rooting out these spies takes high priority, once we've established relative safety for the survivors of Kenabres."

Brevon regards Sabrina as if for the first time, scanning her up and down, regarding her armor, weaponry, symbology, even her style of hair.

A fellow paladin of...Iomedae, of course. It makes perfect sense to find many of them here. But... Does a 19 allow me to determine if she is in need of atonement?

"A safe place to sleep, simple meals, and clean water are more than I could hope to ask for, thank you." He bows deeply to Irabeth.

Next steps? Do we need to rest and reset abilities?

I'm curious about time of day as well. Arrika's burned a few spell slots, but we can keep going as long as others like. Kelumarion and aid another are infinite resources.

I don't need payment, either, Arrika finishes softly, turning over Terendelev's scale in her hand. Kenabres hadn't been terribly kind to the Kellid girl...but it was home, and there were people who needed protecting. I've used a lot of magic today already, but me and Kelumarion are still on our feet, if the need is dire. And I've got some transcribed spells still at hand...Irabeth? Is there any scrolls here, or trained scribes? Potions, or maybe a useful wand, even? We have some spoils we've taken - weapons and armor and such, that we can't use. They're perfectly serviceable, some master quality even...we can work out some kind of barter if you want, for the things we need...

Some decent scrolls and a wand can keep me going for a while, if we want to press on. Toothy, is it ok if we use the stuff we've found to trade in kind, since I'm guessing the coin economy's not doing too hot right now?

It is quite difficult for you to precisely tell what time is it but it should be one-two hours after noon. Judging by the distance, it could be possible for you to investigate both the Topaz Solution and the Tower of Estrod today if you wish.

Looking at Rukzha, Irabeth gives her an apology look. "I'm sorry to say but I'm not sure if they are here... I've heard so many names in the last few days that it is difficult to know which of them are with us, which are still missing, and which have left this world entirely..." She thinks for a moment before continuing. "There is someone who could help you though. His name is Quednys Orlun... he was once the head librarian of the Blacking and, since the attack, is helping us by keeping order in the inn. Just yesterday he was making a list of the survivors so he might know of the people you are looking for."

To Arrika, she continues. "We have many priests and merchants of many different crafts... I'm sure they will pleasantly barter with you."

@Brevon: I think a Sense Motive would be more appropriate but even so I think it is not enough. You notice that she is somehow perturbed by something.

Rukzha wants to contribute as much as possible. "We should still have some daytime left, even if it's hard to say exactly with this sky so investigating one of two of these safe houses should be good. The sooner they are dealt with, the better. After a couple minutes looking for Quednys Orlun, you are able to find him helping a couple crusaders with a cart containing a couple casks of grease-preserved ducks, pointing where to storage them. Quednys is an aged and angular human with an eagle's talon tattoo on his cheek. Through his clothes you are able to see many bandages, some of them with blood stains, probably resulting from an open stitch. "So, how may I help you? Are you also refugees? Or perhaps soldiers... have you already talked to the commander?" He also carries a thick journal in one hand.

Seeing the injured man with the ducks reminded Elriel of a couple of things. Despite the witch's healing, he was still hurt and he was also famished.

"Yes, sir. We have talked to the commander and are about to set out again. But we haven't had much to eat and killing demons on an empty stomach is not good."

He dug into his pockets, "We have coin and can pay for our meal. What do you have?"

later
"Is there a place set up for healing where holy men channel their deities blessings?"

In a game I play, the 'good clerics' would have hourly channelings to heal injured soldiers but I'm not sure if this a possibility here.

It's possible to make out the symbol of the Order on Rukzha's torn and stained livery. "I used to be with the Order of Heralds before all this happened, in fact I was when it happened, but we were separated. The commander said you might know of their whereabouts. I was with Terrace Del'Ven's squad, do you know what happened to them? Are they here? Please tell me Alexis Terrabane is alive at least. And Balthor Illysian, the steward? He wasn't with the same group, but he was my superior, so it would be nice to know about him as well."

Arrika says little, but joins Elriel in a meal, her mind racing with what to ask after from the crusaders' supplies. Even with the spear, I do so little fighting that it's only fair I try to make the others stronger - Kelu, Elriel, this new arrival. Maybe I should ask for some scrolls of wards against evil, some spells I can cast to make their weapons stronger...and those grease slicks I was conjuring can do so much... I wonder if I'll ever really get the hang of this magic.
