Nemis |
"Feels like there's something in there exuding that shadow. I'd wager it's probably a disc that we need. I fear not the dark, but I'm no good in melee, and I'm guessing if there's something nasty in there, it'll hit hard."
Jillia Tennille |
"Disc? Well, what are we waiting for? Direct me to it, Oloch," Jillia instructs, blindly entering the room.
Perception (feeling around with bare hands): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
GM thunderspirit |
It takes Jillia a few minutes to feel her way along the floor to the back of the room, which provides the only-slightly-helpful half-orc with no end of amusement.
Finally, Jillia's hand finds a stone disc, some seven inches across and about an inch think.
When her hand comes to rests on the stone...
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
...Oloch can hear heavy running footsteps thunder about him for a moment!
Inira: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Jillia: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Kaylee: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Muzhaa'f: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Nemis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Oloch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
FYI, players: this is a haunt encounter. With the darkness effect my interpretation is that the only one who can be affected currently is Oloch. I'm not sure that's really fair, but that's how I'm reading this. I'm willing to give a Kn (religion) check to everyone except Oloch as well, but any such check will be at a significant penalty to identify it.
Round 1
Oloch
Jillia
Nemis
Kaylee
Inira
<haunt>
Muzhaa'f
Oloch, Jillia, Nemis, Kaylee, and Inira are up!
Jillia Tennille |
Hah, that's funny. So if I wasn't charmed into being even more reckless, I'd be affected! Chaldira protects me!
K:R: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
"What's going on, guys? Oloch? Anyone?"
Inira McCullagh |
Knowledge, religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Seeing as others can apparently see in this room, Inira watches their backs, peering back down the hallway.
GM thunderspirit |
Forgot to give the DC for the haunt, which is 20.
Kaylee Sharpston |
Kaylee has no specific knowledge of haunts, unfortunately. She'll move toward the darkness effect but not enter it for fear of danger, and start cheering on her allies. +1 atk/dmg and vs fear.
Muzhaa'f |
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 lolz "Jillia, I'll deliver that disc, so you can keep searching for more..." Muzhaa'f says, unaware of what's happening.
Nemis |
Religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Nemis wracks his brain about details.
GM thunderspirit |
Jillia, Inira, and Nemis all can seem to recall something about this sort of thing, but can't quite put their finger on it...
Oloch sees the shadowy form of a burly cyclops straining against a massive serpentine creature. The serpent strikes at they cyclops' face, and Oloch can feel the pain in his own eyes!
DC 14 Fort save or suffer the effects of a blindness spell from the haunt!
Pregen_AM |
Kn. Religion1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
A haunt!Oloch calls out as he heads of to read up on haunt encounters...then instinctively reaches out and bids Gorum to rid the world of this scary shadow.
Touch attack1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 Damage 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (1, 8) + 4 = 13
So positive energy ey? I'll convert weapon of awe to Cure moderate wounds and attempt a melee touch attack.
Nemis |
"Guru's gut!"
Nemis doesn't know what to do, so he REALLY hopes Oloch knows what to do.
GM thunderspirit |
Oloch, thinking quickly, blasts the haunt with positive energy and all is still again!
Yay! Cos this one is nasty, especially at this level.
With the threat suppressed for now, Jillia is free to fetch the stone, and Oloch's height allows him to notice a pair of onyx animal carvings (worth 100 gp each) and a mithral stick on the top shelf in the northwest corner.
Nemis |
"Well done! My cousin has experienced these, but this was my first time. I can tell now that I should probably take his advice and pick up one of those strange occult tools for dealing with them."
Nemis will look about the room, but is otherwise ready to move before that thing gets free.
Jillia Tennille |
"This is that disc that the Starwatcher Spirit asked for, I imagine," Jillia says proudly once she's out of the darkness, presenting it to the rest of the group.
"Not really sure why it wanted it- -you guys got any idea?" Jillia says, already taking a few steps in that direction.
Nemis |
"No idea."
Nemis steps in front of Jillia politely, but completely. "Mayhaps we should look for more first."
GM thunderspirit |
Jillia Tennille |
"Oh yeah, of course," Jillia replies, a beaming smile. "I bet the Starwatcher was only expecting one disc. I can't wait to see the look on its faces if we bring a whole handful!"
Jillia offers Nemis a high-five for his suggestion.
"Shall we?" she calls, waving a hand for the group to follow.
Muzhaa'f |
Muzhaa'f flashes Nemis a look that says, 'Good thinking.'
Is it still dark in that room?
"There was another set of doors on the other side. Let us see what further secrets this place holds."
GM thunderspirit |
It is not still dark in there; the spell effect on the disc is what made it so. But Oloch found all that was there to be found.
Nemis |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Nemis has no idea how to handle the high five and holds his hand up as if to give one, but then bows from the waist.
"Onward, we shall celebrate after we complete the mission."
Kaylee Sharpston |
"Ohmigosh guys, that was AWESOME! We're SUCH GOOD PATHFINDERS, right???" Kaylee just happily bounces along behind her allies, ready to continue aiding them.
Going to be out of posting commission for the next few days, as a reminder. Thanks for understanding, I should be back Monday.
GM thunderspirit |
As the party makes it way back down the corridor to investigate the other side of the edifice, Nemis and Irina both notice a face pop out of the doors to the south, then immediately shut them again. She is dressed like the archaeologists but does not appear to be one they met previously.
Nemis |
"Ho there! We mean you no harm unless you do to us. Show yourself and give voice to your situation."
GM thunderspirit |
The calls echo down the hallway, but the head does not reappear.
Jillia Tennille |
"You guys see something or are ya just acting strange to try and freak me out?" Jillia spins on her heels to ask Nemis and Inira. "It's not gonna work," she says proudly. "Besides, Juliet's team was completely present, wasn't it?"
Muzhaa'f |
Muzhaa'f's suspicions are beginning to reach mountainous proportions. "Peculiar indeed. Perhaps that was Arletta, the one Juliet said was sick. ARLETTA?" he calls. If she does not answer: Muzhaa'f cautiously approaches the doors. Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
GM thunderspirit |
When Muzhaa'f calls out the name, the door reopens a crack, reveling a single eye peering out. A woman's voice asks, Tell me, strangers, what do you think about snakes?
Muzhaa'f |
"Snakes can be many things. A snake may be death, entertainment, a friend, an enemy, fear, prophecy, even food. I, however, am not a snake, and neither are my friends," the priest replies.
Diplomacy (Improve Attitude): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
GM thunderspirit |
She looks at Muzhaa'f with pursed lips. Mmm-hmm. And how about stone discs, eh?
Nemis |
Taking 10 on Sense Motive.
"Lass, I understand your distrust. There IS a lot of oddness going on here. I assure you though, we are of sound mind and bodies. Please perhaps you can help us sort this out."
Inira McCullagh |
Sense Motive, Take 10: 10 + 9 = 19
"I am witnessing some strange things out here, and I expect you have seen some of the same. Care to tell us what is bothering you? Maybe we can compare notes, and work together to set things right?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16
Jillia Tennille |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
"I'm not sure what's got you so bothered, but we're just here to set things right. We've only found the one disc, though. Know where there are more?"
And here's where Jillia's genial nature ends poorly.
GM thunderspirit |
The woman stops talking to Jillia altogether (sorry!), but warms up to Muzhaa'f and Inira enough to tell them that she is Arletta, and that she believes that both the crack in the wall and the Starwatcher Spirit are dangerous — the other archaeologists have already found a pair of discs and sent them through the crack for "safekeeping".
Kaylee Sharpston |
I'm back, everyone! Sorry for the absence.
Kaylee stares at the lady, decides she's not going to be her new best friend, and says "She doesn't seem to like us. Why not? We're AWESOME?"
Inira McCullagh |
"Did the other archaeologists seem off to you in any other way? I am thinking we want to hold on to this disk for now, and keep it away from that crack."
Jillia Tennille |
"I don't think she's talking about the same Starwatcher Spirit. Are there more than one? The one in the crack seems pretty well-to-do."
GM thunderspirit |
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Arletta rubs her chin a moment, then beckons the party to follow her, as she moves to the ivory sphere. She is careful to stay on the side away from the other archaeologists as she climbs the steps to the balcony. She rubs her hand on the side and brushes it across Jillia's forehead.
Arletta looks closely at Jillia. How do you feel now, dear?
Jillia Tennille |
"Like if I can get through the crack before the golem breaks through that wall, I can get the first shot in," she says, smiling, clapping her hands together. "I'll have the Starwatcher seeing stars." She tempers her enthusiasm for a moment. "Why does it want those discs anyway?"
GM thunderspirit |
I don't know, Arletta says, taking care to duck behind the sphere again, but I'm no stranger to charm effects like you and I were both under, and I can sense malevolence in it. She looks at the sphere a moment, then continues. I'm equally sure that, when the golem breaks through that wall, quite literally Hell will break loose.
She suggests the rest of the party take some of the sphere dust, then drops to one knee, pulling a cloth-wrapped bundle out of her pack. I hope I can trust you lot not to slip this through to that...that thing. She unwraps the bundle to reveal another stone disc similar to the one Jillia found, this one with a light like torchlight emitting from it.
Muzhaa'f |
"Agreed," Muzhaa'f nods solemnly. "Do you have any idea what this... sphere is?" He gestures at the beacon, trying to read the threads of magic woven through it. Detect magic.
GM thunderspirit |
Nemis |
"Are you okay Muzhaa'f? Perhaps we don't do that again and finish searching the place first..."
