Atop the ladder, Tattoo is able to finish the miserable creature's live and when Heavy has the same idea she notices it is not moving anymore. Inspecting the mirror, neither Goggles nor Tattoo are able to find anything remarkable about it... no secret compartment, no secret message, nothing.

Inspecting the others washtubs, Heavy founds no more creatures inside.

Just a small recap: The guards have asked you for 3 dead doppelgangers. The crazy man who can speak properly is missing. It appears the general consensus is to return to the barricade... just waiting to see if you'll follow Goggles' suggestion about the safe words and blood test.

Tattoo raises a slightly amused eyebrow towards the half-orc, but responds to her patiently. "Its so that if we got separated we could make sure that anyone who returns is actually them...and not one of those creatures in disguise." She gives Goggles an approving nod. "It's a good idea."

Spending a moment thinking, she tries to think of a good code word. Something that they wouldn't be able to guess easily...or manage to use in conversation accidently... Reaching into her bag, she pulls out the deck of cards from earlier and shuffles them a few times, before cutting the deck and looking at the hidden symbol on the back of the top card. Eight of hearts. Shrugging, she passes the card around to the others. "Here. If we get separated or I'm acting dodgy...ask me what card I drew."

"Damn it, woman. Ain't no shifter." Reaper carefully pricks his finger on the edge of his scythe, showing the crimson color to the others.

He looks a bit nervous, a bit uncomfortable. "And um, y'ant us to write somethin' down? I'll just whisper't in your ear. How about't?"

Heavy smiled. "Trick question! She didn't draw anything! We don't even have pencils in here. But she looked at one that was red!" The half-orc looked very pleased with herself.

Tattoo chuckles and pats the half-orc on the back. "You got him there. Very clever. But, I think we are just going to focus on you remembering your own word."

Turning to the professor, she gives him a look, as if asking, Do you seriously expect her to remember anything we come up with? "I only intended the card to be used as my own code word. You'll still have to come up with your own. Seeing as how remembering one card is the kind of thing a magician expects from a child at a birthday party, I didn't think it would be too unreasonable." A wicked smirk spreads across her face. "Of course, if that is too difficult to remember for our prestigious professor, I'm sure I can think of something more manageable for you. Must is be one syllable or do you think you could handle two?"

Sorry, couldn't pass up the opportunity for Mira to be an ass. ;p

Goggles dug in her kit and found some paper. There appeared to be some complicated looking formulas on some of the paper that looked vaguely familiar. Finding an empty sheet, she tore off a few pieces and handed one to the Professor. On hers she wrote the word wings. It was then that she noticed her handwriting matched that which had written the formulas. "I guess this kit is mine after all," she muttered. She continues murmuring to herself, "When I have the time, I have to try some of these out and see what happens."

Goggles almost hit her forehead with her palm. Of course not everyone knows how to write, or read for that matter. How could I have been so dense.

"Sure, sure. Maybe that's better anyways. Each person whisper their word or card or whatever identifier to each of us in turn. If we ever get separated then you'll be asked for that when we're reunited."

"Professor it looks like we'll need your ring to test the blood."

When it came to testing Heavy's blood, Goggles asked, "Is it ok if I also take a small sample of your blood for myself? You have some interesting properties when you rage that I may be able to work into my formulations."

Heavy was starting to get the impression that this secret word thing was important. Frowning, she concentrated on remembering her new friend's whispered words. Then she had to come up with one for herself. [i]What to pick? Sword? Too obvious. Claws? Too scary. Hmmm....[i]

To Goggles, she said, "You want to use some of my blood for whatnow?" When the girl tried to explain, Heavy just shook her head. Nicking the inside of her arm with the new dagger, she held it out to Goggles. "Take what you want. Just give some to Professor Luscious first."

He gave Goggles his ring after he polished it on his shirt. He then continued to tidy up himself. In fact, he had removed most of the dirt and was now working on his clothes.

He stepped away saying, "And it's LU-CIUS. With your tongue on top of your mouth for the LU and bringing your teeth together for CIUS part." He then exaggerated the enunciation, "LU-CIUS LU-CIUS."

Tattoo just chuckles as the professor tries to teach the half-orc his name. However, realizing that it might take a while, she wanders back toward the mirror. Realizing she doesn't entirely know what she looks like, she takes a moment to glance at herself. Tilting her head slightly, she runs fingers through the streaks in her hair and smiles. I like it. She is just about turn away from the mirror, when suddenly she sees something else...not her own reflection, but that of a little girl...or was it her? Reaching for her temple, suddenly a memory comes flashing back.

In front of a large and old mirror, you see yourself in a light blue gale dress embroidered with black stones. After a couple seconds you notice several imperfections... the dress, despite gorgeous, wasn't new and was probably a bit outdated fashion-wise but you did not complain about it.

At your side, sit on the bed, is an older woman with striking similarities to you... specially the shape of her nose, and her blue eyes. Despite showing a happy face, it is clear that the woman was crying before. There was hope in her eyes.

You are also smiling but you are quick to discern that your smile isn't nearly as sincere as that of the older woman... on your eyes there was just resignation and perhaps shame...

Grasping her head, the asylum comes back into focus. Suddenly she feel a growing sense of urgency...that she needs to get out of her...that someone needs her help. Trying to shake it off, she turns to the others and speaks with her tone remaining as apathetic as ever, but her fingers tap nervously against her leg. "So...as fascinating as this whole Luscious Lucius thing is...maybe we should just get Reaper and the Prof's code words and then...I don't know...get the hell out of here?

Goggles uses the Professor's ring to test each of their blood in turn to see if it'll turn blue on contact.

She saves Heavy for last so that she can also collect some of her blood in one of the empty glass vials in her kit. She found ones specific for blood which was coated with heparin to prevent clotting. Apparently I've done this before and was prepared for it.

"Thanks for allowing me to do this. I'm quite excited to use this when I have the time to create something."

Reaper sighs nervously as the others turn to him, expecting him to come create some pass word.

"Code word? Code word..." Reaper thumps his forehead with his finger. "Can't remember m'won name. How'm I 'sposed t'remember a code word? Plum crazy idear, y'ask me. Hell, just ask me to snot up Creepy over here. That should be proof 'nuff, shouldn't it? I know it and it knows me. No way no shifter could do this, could it?"

"Still..." He muses, rubbing his chin. He turns to Goggles. "Okay. I'll whisper a word in yer ear. You can write it down to show t'others."

He leans in and whispers his secret word to Goggles.

"Nightmare."

Heavy nodded her head enthusiastically at Tattoo's words. "Yes, hell out of here, I like that plan." With one dead ganger over her shoulder, she balanced the bundle in the crook of her elbow and grabbed a second corpse by the ankle. Thus encumbered, she began making her way back the way they'd come. Over her shoulder, she said, "Can the rest of you manage the last one?" As she dragged her burden, she called out, "Little crazy guy? Where you hidin'? It's safe now."

I figure we can just use the other bodies that are lying around?

Between Reaper's breath on her neck and the word that he whispers in her ear, Goggles' body shudders as a shiver travels down her spine. "That's one I won't forget," she murmurs.

Writing down the word 'nightmare' on the other side of the paper she had written her own word, she shows it to the others before taking a flint and steel to it to burn it to ash.

"Let's hope that two dopplegangers count as 'a bunch' when we go back to the angry men. I really do want to get out of here and that looks to be the only way we can go."

Taking a peak at Reaper's word, Tattoo just lets out a single chuckle and shakes her head. "Should be easy enough to remember. I'll give him that.".

Frowning slightly when Goggles brings up the men at the barricade , Tattoo asks, "Do you think that this won't be enough?" She pauses for a moment, before continuing slowly, as if testing the waters. "Because, you know...there were a few of them dead in that other room right? Maybe we didn't kill them...but then again...maybe they don't know that?"

Before testing her own blood, she makes sure the others are watching so that they can't accuse her of hiding anything.

"Friend? Hello? Here, feller feller." Reaper calls out to the vanished man as though he were calling a scared cat.

This reminds him he's rather hungry.

How could I have an appetite, figurin' all this gruesome business? I must be more twisted'n I thought.

"Er...Zandalus sees? Praise! Words fail! Words fail!" He calls out in the deranged man's unusual lexicon, hoping to garner a little trust.

Neither of you reveal yourselves as doppelgangers luckily. After a couple minutes lost gathering the dead monsters, you leave the grizzly 'chirurgic room' behind but you hear no response from the crazed man and also finds no sign of him... at least until you reach the barricade, where you find him dead in a puddle of his own blood, pierced by two crossbow bolts.

As you approach the barricade, the guards' response is unchanged in the beginning, as they point their crossbows at you, demanding you to leave them alone. This changes when one of them notices Heavy carrying the dead doppelgangers. The guard leaves you for a minute before coming back with 'Captain' York, "So... it appears you managed to bring a couple of them down... you, come closer to show me the corpses. Slowly if you know what is good for you!" the man points to Heavy.

The half-orc moved slowly to the barricade, then dumped the two bodies right on it. "We killed these, and also a few other dead guys. Well, they were already dead, or something, but we killed them again. I think they'll stay dead. This place is weird. Can we come through now?"

Tattoo stares down at the bleeding man, feeling anger well in her chest. He was helpless...I should have kept a better eye on him...

Looking up, she hears the half-orc all but growl at the men and its like her own anger is being vocalized. Oh no...we can't antagonize them. Putting a hand on the the half-orc's shoulder briefly, she gives her an almost imperceptible shake of the head, trying to discourage further accusations, before letting her move forward to dump the bodies.

He swallowed his pride and tried his best to calm everyone's nerves, "Listen people. What will it take to convince you that we are not doplegangers? We really are just trying to get out of here. What do you know of this place? Have you tried to escape?"

York then turns to Lucius while waiting for the door to be unlocked, "You'll have your answers just in time... just be a little more patient, please." After a couple more seconds you hear the sound of the closest door to the barricade being unlocked. As you reach for the door handle, it's plain to see something has tried to beat its way through this door in the past, but succeeded only in weakening it.

The door opens to two small rooms whose were once clearly separated, but now a broad gap in the brick wall links them. Dusty buckets, brooms, and racks of cleaning supplies lie in the rear of one space, while the other features a small desk and chairs shoved out of the way. Two more guards stand in this room, a woman and a man (probably Loric).

York bars the entrance to the hall beyond him, "Right, I let you in, now give up your weapons and come with me. You'll have your answers." he demands in a stern tone.

Lucius kept his eyes on the violent DaNae. He didn't like to give up his weapon, especially now that he had become comfortable with his rapier.

However, it really did seem like the thing to do if they wanted to get some answers and get out of here. They had hit a dead end in the other direction.

He unbuckled his belt and gave up his rapier, hoping the others followed suit. "Please be reassured that we mean you no harm. Again, we just want to leave."

He looked at DaNae and raised his hands, "No weapons, no danger. It's OK."

Heavy was very reluctant to give up her sword. The others seemed willing enough, but she wasn't sure if these guys were really friendly yet. She looked over at Tattoo, and said, "Do you want me to give them my sword?"

Goggles wasn't about to give up her defense without knowing what was going to happen. "Where exactly are you taking us to 'find' answers and why do we need to give up our only protection? A logical answer and I hand it over. How do I know you aren't dopplegangers luring us into a trap?"

"I'm going to take you to talk with miss Klaczka, our so called 'leader'... as far as I know, we are the only survivors and I intend to keep us alive. Confiscating your weapons is just an insurance... you proved yourselves quite capable in combat by killing those shifters and we have children, old people, and mentally instable patients among us... it is for their protection that I require your weapons." York explains as he insists about your weapons. The other guards stand still, clearly apprehensive.

Tattoo puts a hand on the half-orc's shoulder reassuringly and gives her a little nod. We can't afford to start a fight with these people. She looks down at Heavy Hitter's clawed fingers. Besides, I'm not sure she needs that weapon to be lethal...Me on the other hand...

Tattoo, lets out a sigh and says, "Of course. It's a reasonable request", as she hands over her spear, her whip and her sling. However, she "forgets" to hand over her dagger, hoping that the men will simply fail to notice it.

Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 To try and make the dagger go unnoticed
Bluff: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 If called out on it, this roll is for her to act like she totally just forgot she had it. Daggers are so small after all ;)

I haven't gotten a chance to level up yet, because have an annoyingly busy week and I figured posting in gameplay should be the priority, as to not hold things up. However, I used the skills above as if I were one level higher because I would definitely be increasing them both this level. If that's not okay, just dock both by one point.

Goggles reluctantly puts her cleaver down. "It's more for food purposes but if you insist, I'll leave it here. I'm totally expecting that back when we leave." She then picks up her pack and and moves towards the door to follow York.

"Couldn't help but notice you all avoided answering my comment about you possibly being dopplegangers."

York nods as Goggles and Heavy hand over their weapons, "Mura, please secure these weapons and make sure to not misplace them, and also take that dagger." he points to Tattoo. Once he turns back to you, he motions you to follow him while talking to Goggles, "Well, I though it was obvious that we are not shifters... hell, we asked you to go after them... also, why to lure you within a trap if we could have simple filled you all with bolts?"

York leads you until the end of the hall, where you find double doors to the west and a single door to the south. To the east, you notice that a set of four bed sheets have been clumsy stitched together, creating a curtain that obscures what lays beyond in that direction. The captain stops in front of the closed doors with his hands on the handle, but before doing so he speaks to Reaper, "I... I noticed that thing... is that a ghost? Nevertheless, that thing is practically identical to you. Do you control it? Can you make it disappear like you did before, or at least keep him out of the chapel?" he sighs before continuing, "As you might imagine, a couple of our survivors were once patients of the asylum and I'd prefer not to scare them anymore... none of them deserve any more horror..."

Once York gets Reaper's answer (if he agrees or not), he opens the double door. Improvised pallets are clustered beneath sculpted divinities, and cooking fires burn beneath cracked windows in this chapel. Panes of violet and blue stained glass form spiraling patterns between prisonlike bars, while dozens of candles flicker from modest alcove shrines. The Briarstone chapel is consecrated to Pharasma, as suggested by a prominent statue of the goddess standing before the sanctuary's westernmost wall and depicted on the spiral stained glass windows. However, there are smaller, candlelit shrines to other deities, including Abadar, Desna, Erastil, Gozreh, Iomedae, Irori, Sarenrae, Shelyn, and even a modest donation box beneath the symbols of Asmodeus and Zon-Kuthon. Several lesser deities also have ledges with symbols and candles here. Each once served as a place where the distressed could come and pray for guidance or mercy for their afflicted loved ones.

The chapel's role as a place of reflection and consolation has largely been pushed aside for more pragmatic uses. Aside from York, you count thirteen survivors in the chapel, apparently all humans, engaged in different activities: some are preparing a meal, while others are resting or talking among themselves. As you enter the chapel, a woman comes closer to you quickly, her face clearly revealing suspicion. The woman is beautiful, having a pale skin, dark hair, and eyes of different colors... one brown and the other green. She wears dark clothes, a necklace with the symbol of Pharasma around her neck, and a silver badge with a single black tower surrounded by what appears to be dried tree branches on the bottom and sparkling red stars on the top.

The woman turns to York, "Who are these people, Vaustin?" she inquires, having no compunction about making it clear that she is wary of you.

"They are also survivors for what I know... They appeared about an hour ago from the western courtyard. Since we were also wary of them, I requested for them to prove that they were not shifters and they've done so by bringing us a couple fresh corpses of those monsters." he looks at you, perhaps trying to read your intentions, "I don't think they wish us any harm... nevertheless I confiscated their weapons."

The woman sighs before looking back to you, bearing the pragmatism of someone harboring great concerns. "Very well. My name is Winter Klaczka... but who are you, and how have you managed to survive outside?"

"Oh, right. Of course." Tattoo remarks casually, as she hands the dagger over. Damnit...We are in a vulnerable position here. Hopefully they are true to their word.

Walking into the chapel, Tattoo's eyes wander over the shrines appraisingly. Along the way she sees some symbols that feel vaguely familiar and some that don't at all. However, none of them seems to really connect with her or trigger any memories. Her attention flittering back to the matter at hand, her appraising eyes now land on the pale skinned priest. Who are we? Good question.

"We were being held prisoner in a basement area below the courtyard. We were able to overpower the creature that was our captor and grab the keys it carried. From there we found our way up here...and that's how we found you..."

He then asked many questions, "What can you tell us about this place? Why are you all here? Is there no way out? How long have you been here?"

"And why did you ask us how we survived outside?" Remembering the burning rain, Goggles asks, "Do you know what's going on with the weather? And where exactly are we?"

"This feller's of the ghostly persuasion, looks it. Can't say for sure, but he is known t'walk through walls." Reaper says this almost proudly, as though extolling the virtues of a favored son. "Purdy swell, y'ask me. But dun' worry, he keeps t'heel. You treat us right, we won't be botherin' nobody or goin' nowheres...forbidden."

Creepy offers no commentary, seemingly content to drip ectoplasm on the floor.

Walking into the chapel, Heavy's stomach rumbled. The smell of food instantly made her mouth water. As she looked for the source of the smell, she caught sight of a beautiful butterfly statue. It was covered in a mosaic of black and purple tiles, and gems in the shapes of stars, sun and moon.

The half-orc moved towards it as if under a spell. "So....pretty...." She reached out a green and filthy hand to stroke the butterfly's wing tenderly.

After a moment, she tore her attention away from the statue, and turned back to her friends. "Ooh, you're pretty too!" she said to the dark-haired woman. "It's true. I don't remember my name or anything. But we don't like it outside at all, the rain burns. This place isn't nice at all."

Klaczka lifts her hands, motioning you to stop with the barrage of questions, "Hey, hey, calm down a bit... you have a lot of questions and this will take time. On the other hand, I have too much on my plate right now... there is a lot to be done." she points to the other survivors. As she points out, you are able to see that a couple of them are still injured, while others are agitated by your presence or some unknown malady of the mind. "Airwynn and Bates are still pretty wounded... Loic needs to be constantly calmed down... we need firewood for the night, and also someone actually capable of cooking something. I honestly can't talk to you right now."

"We have not many capable hands around here and almost all of them I had to keep in guard duty." she starts to turn around to return to her chores but then seems to have an idea, "Hum... since you have nowhere to go and will be using our supplies, how about you actually help? I promise I'll answer all your questions if you do so..."

Heavy clapped her hands twice in delight. "We can help! The professor, he can heal with magic, I've seen it! Maybe he can help your friends! And Tattoo is really nice, she helps calm me down all the time. And I'm strong, and scary! I can get wood, I bet I could carry loads of wood. Or I could be a guard. I could do both! I could guard the wood!"

He then addressed Klaczka, "Eh, sure. We can certainly help and I understand that you're busy but just one question."

He looked around, "How long have you been here in this... community?"

Tattoo waits to hear the woman's answer to Lucius. However, either way she shrugs apathetically, "Well, if we are all stuck here, it would seem that your problems are our problems. So what kind of help are we talking about? I get the feeling you aren't looking for someone to just...guard the wood."

"When looking at my formula book, I saw one for a healing draught. I can make up a few if you'd like." Goggles knew she wouldn't be much for guarding or for cooking. She hoped that she would be allowed the time to spend with her kit and maybe figure out some things about herself.

At Lucius's question, Klaczka turned around with sadness in her face, "One week and one day..." Meanwhile, York leaves the room, returning to the barricade.

At Tattoo's statement, she turned back once more, pointing to the altar as she instructed you how to help, "Since you mentioned healing, Airwynn and Bates are pretty wounded... they are those on the pallets near the altar. Airwynn was almost crushed by a falling wall and she has a broken arm and several broken ribs, while Bates has suffered vicious bites all over his body..."

The woman then points south towards a man sit on a bed being taken care by an old nurse, "That one over there is Loic, an asylum patient who has auditory hallucinations of his dead sister calling for him... Naysa is trying to calm him down with little success since your arrival."

Turning to Heavy, she continues, "Just behind you there is a pile of wood that needs to be broken." As you turn in that direction, you notice a pile of splintered furniture and fallen support beams laying heaped in the north alcove. A crowbar and a handaxe are all the survivors have to break the scrap of wood apart, though.

"Finally, there is food to be made. We have a fire, a couple cooking implements, collected water, and basic foodstuffs. Those two..." she points to a man and a woman on the north side of the chapel, "...are trying to help but are not doing great..."

Basically there is it. These are guidelines of what needs to be done but if you can come upon with anything else, I'll make sure to incorporate it into the game in a nice way. Just remember, many of these men and women are a bit harmed, afraid, and hopeless. Some of them are clearly patients, while others are nurses, and a couple others seem to be normal people.

Goggles moves towards Airwynn. Over her shoulder she tells the Professor, "I'll take the broken bones, you take the bites."

She puts her kit down beside them and consults her formula book. In less than ten minutes, she had mixed a bunch of chemicals together from her kit into a healing draught. She had found a notation next to the formula allowing for it to be made for others. It was a minor, but important change to the formula. Otherwise the extract may have done harm rather than good.

She held the extract to Airwynn's lips. "This will help set your bones. What this doesn't mend, I can brace with a splint to help the bones to set properly."

Of course this is all assuming that Airwynn will let Goggles help her. Goggles will mix a CLW extract for Airwynn which will work now that she's 2nd level and has the infused curative :)

Goggles then assesses Airwynn's remaining injuries.
