Wizards and spells?

Rules Questions

Owner - October Country Comics, LLC.

Since the rules forum lacks a "Ask a simple Question" type thread i'll ask in a new one.

Q #1 When learning my new spells per level, as a specialist do i need to have a certain amount of spells dedicated to my chosen school?
Lets say i'm a 3rd level Wizard(Evoker) and i'm selecting 2 2nd level spells. Do i need to have at least one from the Evocation school or can i select any spells?

Q #2 When preparing spells for the day do i have to prepare a 2nd level spell in a 2nd level slot or can it be an unmodified 1st level spell? This works for any level. Can i prep a lower level unmodified spell in a higher slot? Same question for the Bonus school spell?
As a 3rd level Wizard with a 21 Intelligence i get 4(0 Level)/4+1(1st Level)/2+1(2nd Level). Can i prep Magic Missile in my School slot for 2nd level?

Q#1-Yes, one of the two do have to be from your school.

Q#2-Yes, you can prepare lower level spells in higher level slots, and if the spell you were preparing in a higher level slot was in your school, you can prepare it in your school slot.

Thanks and Thanks.

I have not seen this. Where is it written?

I could have sworn that was right, but now I can't find it....dang!

Under Wizards, spells:

SRD wrote:
Spells Gained at a New Level: Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventures. Each time a character attains a new wizard level, he gains two spells of his choice to add to his spellbook. The two free spells must be of spell levels he can cast. If he has chosen to specialize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from his specialty school.

That is found in the PRD, but where is it found in the books? It is not in the CRB 6th printing.

Here we go. It's not in the classes chapter with the wizard, but instead in Chapter 9-Magic. Core Rulebook, pg 219.

"Spells Gained at a New Level: Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventures. It was removed in either the 5th or 6th printing of the CRB. It used to be on page 219 under "Spells Gained at a new Level" (at least in the 4th printing it was there).

It is no longer in the PRD, which contains the most recent errata.

When I look at the SRD, I do not see that last line.

Where are you getting your quote from?

It's in my Core Rulebook. Though, mine is the fifth printing, so they may have taken that out?

I have my book right beside me, and typed it straight from there.

Maybe it's been changed since the fifth edition?

I just downloaded the 6th printing PDF, and yeah it looks like the errata hit between the 5th and 6th printings, so it is no longer a requirement to split spells gained by specialists.

This is another frustrating issue with all of the pertinent information not being in one place but spread across several chapters. I know most of it is just hold overs from 3.5 but they need to consolidate these. One of the best 3.5 books published was the Rules Compendium that brought all of the entries together in one place.

I also realize that there are updates and errata but I feel like I can not rely on my CRB and always have to go to the SRD.

I see it in my CRB on pg. 219 spells gained at new levels. Though i have a first printing CRB.

Q.Where is the errata located?

Wow....you don't even have to take a spell in your school?
I know some wizards that will love to hear this.

I generally don't print and update my CRB when errata comes out either, but I don't mind using the PRD as it's fast and fairly easy to search. You can, however, printout the most recent errata and update your CRB so it has the most recent language.

Just like any reprinted work, fixes, clarifications, and changes will be made during its lifetime.

Thanks Sniggevert. In the few seconds i was away i found it and downloaded the PDF. I'll need to print this before my next game to go over changes. I guess i should check to see if more of the books i own have been updated.

I will second Hendelbolaf. A Rules Compendium would be ideal at this stage in the game. Updated with rules clarifications. I know the 4e one was a god send.

Sometimes, you already have all the spells of your specialization for that level, and if you had to split spell gain, you would be getting hosed if you are a specialist.

Exactly my point.
