Algund straightens up, a hard look in his eyes. Yeah, put him to sleep. We don't want him scaring people. We bring him to the guards, there's nothing else for it. What's the closest place we can bring him?

Algund moves to catch the man as he falls, ready to carry him off.

Algund does in fact know about Groteus, but it wouldn't make sense for him to talk about the god right now, I think.

Cataria nudges past Gadren as she witnesses the crazed doomsayer entangled with Algund on the ground. She wasn't able to see anybody's lips other than Algund's so she missed Corwin's offer to put the man to sleep.

As the man begins to walk away, Cataria rests her hand on Algund's shoulder. "He's done nothing illegal, and the guards are strained enough as it is. This man is leaving now, and likely hungry, and more than likely mad. Leave him in peace. No need to worry his family any more than they must be already."

I understand that, Cataria, but uh...well, he's real likely to cause some harm if we leave him out here. People will be jittery and ready to fight after last night, he'll give them a target. And once they kill him as a group, they'll be bound together, and won't stop until someone makes them. Now obviously that's the worst case scenario, what's more likely is that he runs into some people and scares them off, until eventually one of them beats him up. But he's very vulnerable, Algund looks away for a moment, and doesn't finish the sentence.

We'll tell the guards he's done no wrong, I'm sure they'll release him if he does have anyone to come looking for him. And once we've got the orphans sorted and we've figured out how things are after the chaos, I'll come back for him.

Cataria sighs, brushing past Algund, a resigned expression on her face as she draws her Morningstar and thumps the back of the man's head with it lightly, attempting to knock him out.

After almost certainly thwacking the man on the head, the small girl catches him during his fall, half-carrying, half-dragging him to a quiet corner where he can (hopefully) sleep off whatever has made him a raving lunatic. She pats his pockets down, searching for anything of value. If she finds anything, she will tuck it all down the front of his trousers, to keep his possessions relatively safe from looters who might be inclined to steal from an unconscious man.

After her work is completed, Cataria will stand back up, slip her Morningstar back onto its loop in her belt, and shrug at the quizzical faces of her colleagues. "Spells are limited, and it's a waste of guard resources and our time to spend too much of our day worrying about him. Korvosans take care of their own. Especially in the poor districts. If he's well-known and well-regarded, someone will handle it. If he isn't? Well, Korvosans take care of their own..." she trails off before returning to Gadren's side and taking hold of his elbow again.

Gadren relaxes his stance a bit more, Algund has the man under control so gave him some space while he talked to Cataria. It might take some time moving through the city in it's current state of discord with unusual individuals coming out of the woodwork. Gadren gave Algund an approving nod with a slight smile once he finishes his statement about the guards.

Continuing your way, you eventually reach the adress that should be Pia's home in Old Korvosa. As you knock on the door, you can hear a lot of commotion inside. A moment later, the door opens, with a small grubby boy─you assume to be no older than eight or nine─standing in the doorway with a defiant look on his unwashed face.

Behind him, a woman with shoulder-length dark hair approaches, wearing an old watchman's coat. Filling the room around her appear to be nearly twenty children, all dressed in dirty clothes, all ranging from six to fourteen years of age.

The dark haired woman takes a minute to stare at the group of people on her doorstep, trying to blink the exhaustion out of her eyes. Once recognition sets in on some of them, she visibly relaxes. “Rebecca, Corwin, good to see you well after last night. I see you’ve found friends.” Her voice is even more raspy and horse today than it was yesterday, a combination of sleep deprivation and smoke inhailation.

She pats the small boy on the head, ”They are friends. Get one of the taller boys to help, there is a box of clothes in the hall closet way at the top. Then you all get baths!” She calls to the retreating form.

Pia then steps outside and closes the door gently behind her. ”Sorry, I meant to meet up at Zellara’s place, but it was so late when I got home, I was exhausted. Then still needed to check them for any injuries or illness. I just woke up.” She looks back towards the door, ”And there was so many more of them than I expected. There was less when we left Lamm’s and I honestly expected many to just run. They’ve eaten almost all the food I just bought yesterday. But they needed it. It’s going to cost most of my remaining coins to get them enough for a few more days. That’s if I can even find a store open. A few I think may have homes to go back to, but most look to be long time street kids, several still refusing to speak. ”

She sadly shakes her head, ”I don’t want to turn them over to the city if I don’t have to. A few of the older ones actually expressed fear of that. And after last night, I think the homes will already be getting an influx…”

Anything else she might have said is cut off by a large yawn.

Looking at the mass of unwashed orphans, Thorfinn is dismayed. But for the Commandant, I could have been one of them. Some may be irredeemably corrupted, and follow Lamm's path, but others... he steps forward and extends a hand. "Thorfinn, of the Sable Company, ma'am. I'd be happy to speak to Commandant Endrin on behalf of these children. I don't know that any would be admitted to the Academy, considering the...circumstances of their backgrounds, but the Company has other work, and can always use those with sharp eyes and wits. It's not a path to luxury, but it's honest work for honest wages. Mostly."

Algund watches Caria uneasily, stretching a hand out suddenly when she raises her morningstar. He relaxes as the man turns around, and walks slowly up to the pair of them as he falls.

Okay. We leave him here, for now.

Later

Algund is mostly quiet on the walk, staying near the back of the group. He's one of the later ones to walk through the door, and he looks over the orphans as he does, waiting for Thorfinn and Pia to finish introducing one another. Don't worry about the cost of food, as long as it's available I'm sure we've got enough between us, you won't come out behind if I can help it. She's tired and does not deserve to lose out. Seems like a good person.

Algund offers a hand, glaive held awkwardly in the other, Algund, Neithan, ran into these others last night. So did Thorfinn, actually, and Gadren and Cataria. Algund gestures at them each in turn, We ended up sleeping together at Zellera's Algund blinks slowly, ...sleeping...at Zellera's...together. He shakes his head once and smiles, it's really rather endearing. Anyway, she's dead, as you know, but her ghost is still around, wanted us to stick together, told us "the city of Korvosa has need of you". It was pretty vague, but she's probably right. That about sums up the whole I see you've found friends thing, I think. Algund finishes with one hand on a hip, looking for a place to put his glaive.

Oh, and did you happen to see a particular boy? Algund scans the children again, Merrik Pilts, nine years old, about four and a half feet tall, maybe seventy pounds. Dark hair, dark eyes, cuts on his fingers. His father's a fishmonger at Gold Market, always let him play with the knives, but apparently he's not too coordinated...anyway...

Algund calls out to the children, Merrik? Merrik Pilts?

Gadren will wait til Pia has had a chance to respond to Algund's question about Merrik Pilts. He'll then nod and place his other hand on Cataria's on his elbow to make it easier for her to notice him speaking. The hand moved out to shake Pia's as he speaks making sure Cataria has a clear view of his face. "I am Gadren, Priest of Pharasma. Cataria here is a performer, diviner and friend of the late Zellara, gifted by the gods but they took her hearing in turn. Be mindful not to start turning your back while speaking so she can understand you. I can provide as much water as you might need through magical means or if additional healing is needed just say. Some of the older children may be able to find a life with the various churches of the city that they have the temperament for. The hard lessons learned might lead some to be more inclined towards particular churches but better for a dour and pragmatic person to become a worshiper of Asmodeus than a Norgorbor. For those with the capacity of such things, there's always a few cleaners in a cathedral you have to consider how faithful they really are. It is unfortunate that we are meeting you at this time but together we might make more of a difference.

Pia returns greeting to the new comers, and gives a small almost knowing smile to Cataria.

”If possible, it will be good to give the children a choice in their fates. It’s a simple something that they have not been given much. I’m sure a few may be interested in the guard or clergy, some maybe able to find apprenticeships.” She says towards both Thorfinn and Gadren.

”Merrik? That might be the boy helping the young Ms Preet in the kitchen. The description fits.”

”Zellara is correct. The city is in need. It’s been restless lately and after last night…” Pia takes a moment to close her eyes and breath deeply before saying barely audible , ”So many new voices…” Opening her eyes, it's easy to see a haunted look in them that has nothing to do with her lack of sleep.

She looks towards Rebecca while shaking her head slightly, ”Your family is well. But I’m afraid Kamilla will not be rejoining us, her father was killed in the riots. That nice young guardsman, Mattuen, stayed to help escort her to the Cathedral with his body…. “ Pia sighs. ”But we can discuss all that when not standing on the stoop. Come in, you all can see to the children, perhaps seeing Wren will calm a few of the more skittish ones and we can find out their names. Confirming that Lamm’s flunkies are imprisoned and can not hurt them anymore will probably help also. Once the children are settled we can figure out what Zellara and Korvosa need us to do next.”

"I am sorry for her loss." Rebecca does her best to keep the emotions of the news of her family being safe off of her face as she says this. "Perhaps Algund and I should speak with them. He seems to have a way with the lost, and I can regale them with tales of the cell their former tormentors are in now."

Questioning the children and discussing their fate, a few of them do have homes and caretakers that they can be returned too, but the vast majority of them are orphans, with no place to go. It would seem that Gaedren preferred his lambs lost.

A boy named Merrik Pilts is among them however, and he regards Algund somewhat suspisciously.

I like that, a choice in their fates. Algund seems pretty sure of this point.

New voices? Does she hear the dead? That seems to be causing her some distress...I feel a kinship with this woman.

Algund follows the others inside, taking a look around the house. He takes off his helmet as soon as he comes inside, and looks for a place to put his glaive. Mind if I just drop my pack and things in the corner, or is there a closet or something? He asks, not wanting to impose on Pia, whose house is already full of strange children.

Algund seems quite pleased with this, a way with the lost? Sure. Was lost once myself, but uh, got my feet under me now, or whatever people say.

GM Teleute wrote:

Algund stands a safe distance from the boy, arms behind his back. He seems to be choosing his words carefully, and speaks a bit slower than usual. There you are, your father sent me to look for you. He also said that you ran away from home, though he wouldn't tell me why. Was he a drunkard? Did he beat you? And I hear you were found by Lamm, that's a mean fellow with no real redeeming qualities, but you don't have to worry about him any longer.

You can tell me why you ran away if you like, but you don't have to. I certainly can't make you. Can't make you do anything, in fact, but I can bring your parents here, or you to them. What happens when wants to stay here? Do I bring they? And then if he still wants to stay, if they have to rip him away? How could I watch that?

Oh, my name's Algund, by the way. I'd be glad to help you with any problems you'd like.

Later

We should start by returning those with families, assuming that's what they want. Maybe Rebecca and I can do that while Thorfinn, Gadren, and Pia stay here and talk to them about their future. Not sure if it's a good idea to split up like that, maybe Cataria should come with us as well? Seems like we want to try to act quickly if we can, so that we can react to the people in the city before the guards do. Not that they necessarily would be bad but uh...we're better. Is the assumption, on account of, you know, we get to decide what we do completely, and not what they do.

A momentary smile passes over Pia, "My Jonathan used to dump his gear by the door the time." She chuckles briefly, "There is a weapon rack behind the door."

Unlike the rest of the small, but tidy, house the weapon rack has a noticable film of dust from obvious disuse, except for a recently placed crossbow.

Wren worms her way past the rest of the group, gives Pia a quick hug and dives into the mass of children.

Within seconds there is a bout of laughter, cheering and the loud sounds of Wren being very directive to the rest of the children.

"We aren't in that pit anymore. You are guests! Kess, go sweep that up. Tani get off the chair. Mouse, get Alee and Pip and get the bedding together for airing. Hana stop pushing Vril or I will pop you one...", comes the voice from inside.

"Pia, I am glad that you didn't have any significant problems last night...well, aside from the lack of sleep. Children can be very...energetic." he says with a beardy grin. Like my children that I will not see again... The grin vanishes with a flicker of pain.

"In any regard, is this going to work to take care of the children? The orphanage that Wren was taken from...well sold to Lamm from actually doesn't make me too comfortable about the prospects of any child in one of them." he says scratching his chin.

"As for apprenticeships...that might work. But usually the family of the apprentice pays the way of the apprentice into the craft...which is why so many orphans take bad turns. They don't have many prospects beyond thieving or the guard."

Rebecca shakes her head. "That should be possible, but not today. I still need to find someone of high enough ranking in the Guard to take my after action report concerning Lamm's lawful slaying last night. Not that anyone would miss him, mind you, but it would be a shame if other murders were tied to us simply on account of our killing him. Corwin and Pia should come with us... Ms Avelard and Ms Preet should probably give testimony as well, if only to ensure that his former associates get the rope instead of parole."

As she says this she gives both young ladies a smile and drops down to eye level with them.

"I promise that if you do you will not be held accountable for anything you were forced to do for the snake and his gang. I would understand, however, if you just want this to be over. Your father should be back within the week, winds being kind, and I know that he will be overjoyed to see you again." She gives the young Preet's hair a tousling. "Until then you may stay with me, or with Mrs. Verlaine if you prefer."

She stands a moment, contemplative. "I could use a couple of older kids to help out around my office. It won't pay much beyond shelter and food, but I can teach some of what I know. Perhaps put in a good word with the admittance board for the Korvosian Guard if any show aptitude for it."

Alright[./b] Algund seems a bit uncomfortable at Pia mentioning Jonothan, but doesn't say anything.

He finds the weapon rack and deposits his glaive gingerly. He leaves the layer of dust intact, not daring to disturb something so delicate. [b]Breathe carefully, eh? It's beautiful enough to warrant concentration. This, this here's the real dust of death, not the dirt that's piled in a grave. This is what they leave behind. Beside the long glaive he places his sword, still in its scabbard, and below both he drops his pack and helmet.

Alright, although I think you'll have trouble finding someone high ranking who isn't busy after last night. I guess it's important though, like you say. If you don't find someone satisfactory, I'm sure you can just leave a notice to whatever low ranking official you do find, and that way in a few days when things calm down and you can find someone more important they won't be all confused and, you know, "why didn't you tell us sooner?" Algund's voice changes rather comically, and he grimaces. Uh... he chuckles, anyway, I can still take the kids home, although it might not be the best idea for me to try alone. If we split into three groups we can sort things out fast, which is good because we also need to sort out the kids with no family and buy food.

So Rebecca, Corwin, and Pia will go together with a few of the kids in search of a high ranking guard.

Me and probably at least one other person will return the other kids who have homes. Hopefully we don't encounter any trouble.

Then the remaining two or three people stay with the kids and try to find out what they might be good at. Get a decent list how many might find a place in a church, which of the older ones would be good for Rebecca or to send off to the guard.

Then after getting that list together you can...hmm...wouldn't want to go out and leave the kids alone. I was going to say buy food though. Maybe one of the other two groups does that instead?

Sound like a plan? Who's coming with me?

Cataria nods when introduced to Pia, a smile on her face. Later, as she enters the small home, tears form in her eyes, running down her cheeks. "These...all orphans?" her mouth hangs agape as she processes the tattered clothes, dirty faces, the smell of dust clinging to the throng. "If any are in need. There is a woman. Anca, from Midland. She has a tent, maybe you know it?" She describes the location of her de facto home for the past several months. "I'm sure she would be able to take one, perhaps two of the children. Cataria bites her lip, should I mention my own family? Certainly they're wealthy enough to help. But no. That leads to too many questions. turning to face her colleagues. Gadren might have a few connections with some churches, could find some spots. I myself am normally a resident of the temple of Shelyn, which I need to visit soon to let them know I'm okay, and I bet we could take in another few kids. Post

And Rebecca's maybe got some opportunity for older children to help her around to office. Post

Okay. I don't see why the group that says here would need to have multiple people, but it's perfectly reasonable to be apprehensive about sending only two people out into the streets. Certainly now, when we haven't had a chance to really get a lay of the land yet.

It's not a bad suggestion, anyone else have opinions on the matter? Algund seems to be quite relaxed, ready to discuss this as long as it takes before taking action.

After a moment's confusion passes her face, Rebecca mouths "Oh" wordlessly as comprehension dawns on her.

"My apologies, I was not suggesting that only the three of us go. I was merely saying that as the three of us are the only ones remaining together from those that killed Lamm, that the three of us will all have questions to answer."

Rebecca turns back to Pia. "Roran and his dragon were escorted off by a group of hellknights that we ran into. With all the problems the city is facing at the moment, I suppose the thought of a wandering dragon and his boy was just a bit too much of an unknown variable. I do hope that they do not execute them both on principle." She shakes her head at the thought.

"At any rate, if the Guard has questions for him I am sure that there are about twenty forms for them to fill out with the local Knight leader in order to obtain the 'privilege' of doing so." Rebecca rolls her eyes, clearly not a fan of the knights' endless emphasis on lawful behavior at the expense of expedience or common sense.

Pretty neat spell, that one's new to me. 21 is a succes, but I'm afraid 12 is not.

Very little people are out and about, Pia observes, and very few of the people that are out, have time for idle banter. She does pick up a little bit of information from some city folk regarding the riots though.

"The Acadamae's closed its doors and says the doors will stay closed until the troubles in Korvosa die down. Can't say I blame them!"

Knowledge Local DC 12:
The Acadamae (T5 at the Korvosa map) in Citadel Crest is a renowned magic school. It was founded roughly a century ago, and built by dwarves from Janderhoff in less than a month. The students as well as the faculty live inside its 30-foot-high walls, and very few outsiders know what happens within or are permitted entry. It's said to be completely self-sufficient, the Acadamae providing for its inhabitants all they need to live.

Apologies, with the Local modifier from the city statblock, Pia's second roll does succeed, so here's another bit of "information".

"No Korvosan monarch has ever died of old age. No Korvosan monarch has ever produced an heir after being crowned. They call it the 'Curse of the Crimson Throne.' No way in hell would I ever sit in that chair if I got crowned!"

"The Acadamae's locked down tight" Pia gives a bit of a nod to Corwin. "No plans to open doors until order reestablished." She shakes her head, trying to quiet some of the louder voices to their natual murmer.

"Mostly chatter about the King, as expected." Pia gets a puzzled look, "Did you all know no monarch of Korvosa has 'ever' died of old age or produced an heir after crowning? Being called a curse: Curse of the Crimson Throne."

It's probably a decent idea to at least see if the guards are still in decent shape, even if we do get turned away for lack of time.

Pia Verlaine wrote:
"I can try asking the City, would be easier than walking around, but sometimes it is hard to quiet enough of the other voices to hear the ones I need."

Algund folds his arms and watches closely as she listens to people who are not there. How is that? Hearing voices, I mean, do you wish it would stop? Is there anything I can do for you?

Pia contemplates Algund's questions. "In the beginning, I didn't even notice. Voices, real or imaginary, don't have any meaning when you are already dead." Pia cannot stop tears from forming in her eyes. "Jonathan.... was my life. His death..." Pia takes a deep breath before moving on.

"The voices are what eventually got me moving again. Out of the house, back to work. Even if I wasn't...still... am not whole. Maybe never will be. I truly believe I also died that day, maybe not physically, but in every other way. A gift, a curse, a mix of both, I don't know."

"But one thing I do know, last night, my first moment of real peace in 5 years. Not just my own. Many others had suffered because of that man. So if it is a curse of still being alive when I should be dead, a gift from one of the gods I am still on speaking terms with," Pia avoids eye contact with Gadren at that statement. "Or something else entirely, it doesn't matter. It's part of me. Even those who are dead deserve to still be heard by someone, deserve help. Not just those powerful like Zellara. I seem to have been chosen for some of that." Pia shrugs at the end of her statement. "I had alot of time to think last night when making my way home."

Gadren nods not questionaing Pia on this at the moment, he hoped she didn't mean Ugathoa by avoiding his gaze. It didn't matter over much to him, the most arrogant heirophant of Asmodeus to the most humble local priest of Desna, all are judge by the Grey Lady. He knew some found being around priests of his favoured deity, people didn't like remembering who they had lost or their own inevitable fate.

It was inevitable and comforting, we all go to the boneyard eventually but not everyone looked at it that. "You are fortunate for the reprieve then, I appreciate you are trying to spend the time well. It's not easy being an orphan in Korvosa even on a normal day. If you're not keen to offer any prayers to the Grey Lady Pia I wont chastise you, don't fear that I am some evangelist. I offer council and needed services but I am no missionary who doesn't shut up. Whatever gods yet offer you comfort then I am glad you still find reassurance with them."

Rebecca quietly goes to Pia and gives her a reassuring hug. "I miss him too, though not as much as you I am sure. He... he helped me transition from patrolling East to patrolling South.... helped me get a better sense of the place. I probably would have ended up dead a month or two in if not for the advice he gave me. Perhaps some of the folks in East I pissed off with my efficiency were counting on that, truthfully." She shakes her head. "If only to avenge his loss, Lamm's death was a long time coming. I know it won't make you whole again, or bring him back... but hopefully he is satisfied in the afterlife."

Picking up her rapier once more, as well as her crossbow, Rebecca makes toward the door.

"First order of business seems to be to scrounge up enough food for everyone. Wren, you and two or three of the older children should come with us to bring the food back once we acquire it. Thorfinn, you and Cat should stay here, get to know the children better and see who has parents among them that may still draw breath." Assuming the recent troubles have not rectified that condition. Grimly, Rebecca shakes the though away and continues.

"PIa, Corwin, and I will venture to get food and then get to Midland to make our report. Algund and Dren may come with us or stay here, as they deem practical."

Cataria reaches for Pia, instinctively resting her hand on the crying woman's shoulder, her eyes becoming red and watery as she listens to the story. "I know how hard it is, to be cursed by the gods. Your voices are what got you moving, while the Gods seemed intent on forcing me to stop. I used to love music. I'd listen for hours, clapping along, moving my feet to the rhythm and beat. There is something magical in the eyes of a person while they sing. It's like I could hear traces of their soul, floating on their words.

Now, I can only feel the beat in my hands and feet, a slim ghost of the joy I used to know. I wonder, sometimes, if the Gods were trying to teach me a lesson, or punish me for my youthful wildness. I've been...still. Forced to use my mind, open my heart, rely on my friends as I learned how to live again. I thank the Gods for the changes they've brought in my heart, and the powers they've given me in trade, and yet, I still wonder if I've been shorted in a bargain I wanted no part of."

Cataria's entire face is red now, tears streaming down her cheeks. She sobs for a quiet moment, before muttering. "I will go where the children need me. Tell me when and where."

Gadren checks the straps of his armour and equipment quickly again before nodding to Rebecca and moving beside her, he'd rather be out there dealing with whatever would come than sitting her waiting. He offered a weak reassuring smile to Cataria and makes the Pathfinder sign language gestures for goodbye and watches for signs of recognition of it's meaning. Either way he simply waves and readies to delve out once more into the streets knowing well things might get dangerous out there and it was up to him to make sure people got back in one piece... he hoped. It might have been far easier on him if the day had gone differently, he wasn't in a mood for getting distracted by things out of their hands, there were hard practical matters to consider and overcome. As his eyes fixed on the door the soft smile he had moments before faded to a grim resolve.

I'll go with you, gotta stop by the temple. Five Corners isn't too far out of the way, and I need to see how things are around there. Plus the priests will probably have talked to some people from around the city, might be able to give us some advice.

Algund moves towards the door, still silent, ready to follow Rebecca.

As the group leaves Pia's home and starts down the street, there's only a handful of people going about their business.

Suddenly, a rumble issues from below, and a moment later the city street cracks apart and long fissures run across the bricks. The road bursts upward, casting chunks of rock into the air and raining bricks on the surrounding area. The stench of sewer filth and garbage belches forth, heralding the approach of a large monster, a three-legged freak that is mostly mouth. Three tentacles, two tipped with barbs and one with eyes, extend from its sides. The beast lumbers towards some of the townsfolk in the street, and its intention appears clear.

"Sounds like an excellent plan. We have a significant number of mouths to feed. The gold we have gained from Lamm should be adequate to feed the children for some time...if we stretch it."

Corwin gets back to his feet, helped by a white-faced Wren, as a chunk of road slides off a nearby slate roof and comes crashing to the roadway, accompanied by dozens of slate tiles.

"By the Gods, what is that thing!" Corwin exclaims, watching the thrashing beast climb up onto the road.

I have no idea what that is, but it doesn't look friendly. Get away from it, he shouts at the townsfolk.

Detect evil as a move action.

If it detects as evil:
