Kaelic burns, stabs, and burns the bear again!
Juma misses the bear as it stands, finds his staff useless while in the bear's grasp, throws it down, and reverses the bear's hug. Using the bear's weight against it in the style of Tien martial artists, Juma flops the bear over and pulls its arm behind its head!
Apparently dying of embarrassment, the bear cease to move, then disappears with a poof!

Kaelic |
"You wrestled that dying bear like a champ! Bravo!" Kaelic pauses. "Okay, that was pretty good, but I had to do your job while you were going all chest-to-chest there. You're welcome."
Did I already detect magic? If not...

GM Tektite |
You did detect magic, the whole room gave off conjuration. As in conjuring a bear!
Searching the room, the party finds a chest that Kaelic unlocks to find about 3,200 gp in coin and gemstones. Also the is a scrap of paper on the nightstand that appears to have bawdy limricks written on it. The armoires and wardrobes store rich clothing worth a total of 850 gp. Sitting on the writing desk is a gold ring set with a fat black pearl worth 1,350 gp.
Kaelic detects magic from the scrap of paper and eventually deduces that is is some sort of secret page.
Kaelic |
"Well there's some kind of secret message hidden here, but I don't have the magic to read it. Best not try either, unless you're fond of curses and such. Now Juma, carry my gold!" Kaelic concludes before taking a brief look around. "That's all up here, right? To the basement?"
GM Tektite |
The spiral stairs lead up to another level. I'm going to assume you go there first.
Heading up the spiral stairs, you enter a glass domed chamber. Within this glass-domed chamber is an enormous telescope that sits upon a platform over a veritable sea of metal gears. An angled metal chair sits below the device, within reach of a cluster of pedals and levers that enable its occupant to perform adjustments to the telescope’s orientation. Tables covered in books and charts occupy the southeast corner. The view of the surrounding skies afforded by the glass dome is breathtaking in its expanse.
Detecting for magic, Kaelic notices an aura behind the party. Looking, you see a 1-foot-wide ledge runs around the edge of the dome. Sitting on the southwest portion of this lip is a creature that looks like an obese infant, but with leathery skin mottled with spots of grime, curling ram’s horns, sharp blackened teeth, and black eyes with no pupils.
It merely grins wickedly at the party.
Juma Salvadore |
Juma dutifully continues with the inventory ledger.
"...and one deathbaby."
Looking up, he adds, "Excuse me, what's the best term to identify you? Just give me any sort of title to write down and we'll be out of your hair."
Kaelic |
"I think you have it right." Kaelic mutters as he stands up on his toes to peer at the ledger. "D-E-A-T-H-B..." he glances back up at the creature. "Yep, looks good."

As the party ignores the deathbaby, it takes wing and flows to the east, pointing a wand at the party. A lightning boly shoots out of the wand and hits Dagon and Kaelic!

Dagon and Juma are up!
Death baby is 15' feet in the air.
Kaelic |
Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
"Juma, hit it!"
And don't stand in front of me if you can help it.
Juma Salvadore |
"Whoa! Fan out!"
Juma tries to move to where he won't be in a line with his comrades (feel free to move me on the map), and chucks a chakram at the deathbaby.

Dagon dances out of the way of the electric attack, steps to the side, and tries to take the wand out of play.
Grease on the wand. DC 15 Reflex save or drop it.
GM Tektite |
Juma throws his chakram, hitting the creepy baby!
1d20 ⇒ 1
Dagon casts a spell, greasing up the wand and it shoots out of the baby's hands, falling to the floor!
The creature snarls and swoops toward Dagon, it teeth bared!
Flying Charge Bite vs Dagon: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Fort Save vs poison
Luckily, Dagon throws up an arm and fends off the creautre!
Everyone is up!
Juma Salvadore |
Juma puts his staff away, then does his best (5ft step, since stowing the staff is a move) to position himself between his allies and the deathbaby, hoping to make himself the target of the next attack. He then takes a couple of quick breaths and prepares to pull the monster out of the sky.
Readied action to grapple the deathbaby if it enters my reach: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Kaelic |
Kaelic throws out a burst of flame from his hands before scuttling back away from the action. "Fire death!"
Cast Defensively DC 17: 1d20 + 4 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 3 + 4 = 20 Success!
Burning Hands: 4d4 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 3) = 12 DC 15 Reflex for half
Kaelic |
Technically I think it can go off now, since you're adjacent to the deathbaby (who is in melee range with Dagon apparently).
Juma Salvadore |
Really? I guess I assumed a fly-by that ended with him way up in the air again, but re-reading I see that wasn't actually stated. So I guess if he's already in reach, I attempt a grapple with a 20; if not, I ready with a 21. And in either case, I provoke, and any damage is subtracted from that number.
GM Tektite |
1d20 ⇒ 18
Kaelic unleashes a gout of fire at the deathbaby, but it pitches to the side, avoiding much of the flames!
Juma reaches out and grabs the deathbaby, while Dagon begins singing!

Headbutt vs Juma: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 - 2 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
The deathbaby snarls and tries to bite and headbutt Juma, but has little luck!
Party up!
Dagon Nommo |
"Watch out! It's poisonous!" Dagon maintains his song, then steps into flanking, draws his dagger, and attacks.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 + 2 = 9 vs. AC-2 for grappled
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Juma Salvadore |
"I'll hold it, you guys beat it!"
Maintain grapple, pin if successful: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 9 + 1 = 27
Ha! When did I become a grapply-guy? I should dip monk next level and make it a thing. :D
Kaelic |
Kaelic whips out his weapons and gets stabby.
Sickle: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 = 10, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Kaelic |
Dagon as well. He's adding that +1. I mean, I'm adding that +6 and rolling the die, but apparently it's the rolling part I'm screwing up.
Kaelic |
Sickle: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 1 = 23, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Mace: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 1 = 14, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
"Hack! Slash! Die!"
Juma Salvadore |
Juma flexes his manliness in an attempt to crush the deathbaby.
Maintain, if successful he's still pinned and takes damage: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 1 = 21, Damage: 1d3 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8

Don't forget your +2 for flanking with me, and +5 for maintaining an existing grapple.
GM Tektite |
All the difference in the world.
Under the vicious assault of the party, the deathbaby is shot, stabbed, and squeezed to death!
Out of Combat!
Other than the lightning bolt wand, that Kaelic thinks hold another 5 charges, there is nothing of of interest on the deadbaby.
In addition to 50 rare star charts that focus on strangely empty-looking swaths of the night sky, lying on the tables are an exquisite platinum astrolabe, six rare astronomy tomes of aged Taldan pedigree, and two expensive handheld telescopes. In all, this stargazing gear is worth 5,000 gp.
Downstairs?!

the deadbaby.
I see what you did there. ;)
Juma stands around waiting for his companions to finish whining about their boo-boos, then finally asks, "Are you guys ready to move on yet?"

Descending the stairs to the lower level, you enter three interconnected rooms cluttered with dozens of stacked crates and chests containing only mundane household supplies.
A single door stands in the western wall. Opening the door, a corridor runs to the north and south, then both ends turn to the west.
