Dotting for probable character use.

Your party has known each other for a short time. You all hired on as caravan guards for a man named Silas Gribb. You have had a little time getting to know each other as the caravan made it's way from Cassomir to Belhaim, the town in which you now sit.

When your caravan arrived two days ago, it was swiftly stopped and detained by the town constabulary. Next thing you know, Gribb is arrested on a warrant for smuggling. You all are able to quite easily claim your ignorance and innocence in the matter and local law enforcement releases you to your own devices. Within an hour, the sheriff and his best deputies are on their way to Cassomir with a shackled Silas in custody.

Stranded in this small town of Belhaim with very little money, Talia Orem, the young proprietor of the Wise Piper Inn, takes pity on the you all and offers free room and board for a few days—long enough for your now aimless party to at least figure out what to do next.

Sitting in the common room of the inn, enjoying a free meal of fresh bread with cheese and honey, washed down by watery mead, your party chats among yourselves.

Go ahead and make intros if you'd like, I'll put another post up once everyone has posted.

The lithe half-elf sits at the table trying desperately to not get honey everywhere, while a white tiger lounges on the floor beside her wishing she'd drop more than just dairy and bread.

Her long chestnut hair, sandy highlights emphasized in the inn's lighting, falls over her shoulder, dangerously close to the sticky mess on the plate.

"I probably shouldn't be asking, but I can't help but wonder what it was Silas was trying to smuggle anyway."

With a shrug, she wipes off her hands as best she can, finishes her mead and brings out the flute you've heard her butcher nearly every night on the road. Thankfully, she keeps it away from her lips and practices silently with her fingers over the holes.

"Whatever it was, it leaves us without work. Maybe there will be some postings in the square. We can check tomorrow."

The raven haired man with blue, almost glowing eyes, approaches the table of the half-elf he recognized from the caravan and arrest. He sets his longbow down against the wall and smiles.

"Hi, Lia is it? I did not get a chance to speak with you, or any of the others, as we traveled with the caravan.
To be honest, I was not expecting to be stranded here and was spending more time in thought than conversation.
I should have noticed Silas Gribb was no good, but like the rest of our group, I needed the money."

He hesitates offering his hand, not sure how he would avoid the honey. He decides on a more formal bow.

"Ares is my name. I am a follower of Erastil.
I have been admiring your tiger. How long have you two been together?"

"I had noticed your silence. Any thoughts in particular?"

Brash and bold as always, Reynaldo Li strides into the room with a knowing smile, his armor a little too revealing and tight as usual, and his broad gladius at his side. The Tian claims relation to the house of Kirin and to Amari Li herself, if he's to be believed, but there's the rub. If there's something to be said with confidence while working a room, it's usually being said by Reynaldo.

His mood when he reaches the table with Ares and Lia changes abruptly. While the smile never leaves, his voice presents a much different picture. Wish we were able to get out of here, he says, low enough only the half-elf and aasimar can hear. There's no coin to be had in this thorp. I could put on a bloodsport to cheer their days and not make enough to get me half a league, let alone all of us.

As you all sit around the inn, garnering not a few stares from the other patrons, suddenly the inn walls rattle as if shaken by thunder! People in the inn look around in bewilderment then begin heading toward the door and windows to discover the source!

Through the windows, you see a cloud of dust rising into the air to the northeast, when suddenly a villager bursts into the inn, screaming. The Witch Tower has fallen! Galvanized by the news, everyone in the inn jumps from their seats and lurches for the door at once.

KN: local or Diplomacy to gather more information

The four of you head toward the direction of the collapsed tower, overhearing people abuzz about dozens of kobold bodies found amongst the rubble!

Arriving at the collapsed tower, two locals putter about aimlessly. One wanders about scratching her head, and the other stands with hands on his hips, chewing on a stalk of grass. These two, as you have learned during your short stay in town, are Letha Mulle and Varyl Hodd, the least experienced of Sheriff Benhovy’s crew and clearly out of their element with the sheriff on his way to Cassomir.

Someone from the crowd suggests checking to see whether the wizard Hunclay knows anything about what happened, given that his manor shares the hill with the tower. The deputies argue for several minutes, over who’ll knock on the wizard’s door, before a older woman grumbles that she will go and ask. Walking across the street, she stops and exclaims. There is a burnt kobold body over here!

The two deputies run over and inspect the body, before Hodd knocks loudly on Hunclay's door. When there is no answer, Mulle reaches for the door, but Hodd grabs her wrist, stopping her. "Whatever magic did in that kobold might still be active on the wizard’s door! Best let it alone!"

Mr. Hammerfist:
To your sharp dwarven ears, the sound of the collapsing tower was more akin to a landslide.

Sorry Reynaldo, I always miss your checks.

As Ares talks to a bystander, Reynaldo begins chatting up another townie. Hunclay, bah! He's old, crabby hermit. Rarely comes out, but for supplies. Usually see him once a week, but come to think of it, I haven't seen him lately. The townie shrugs and moves closer to the destruction. Another bystander overhears the man talking to Ares and puts an elbow into Reynaldo's side.

Everyone thinks the tower was here first, but it wannit. See Belhaim, was founded by Tula Belhaim, a great dragon slayer. She defeated the dragon Aeteperax, who ravaged this area. She made Baroness afterward for her deeds. Well, she married a fellow dragonslayer, a chap named Canteclure and they built a castle atop yonder hill. Legend is they were both found dead, marriage problems or sumpin'. The villager picks at his teeth with a finger, then continues. [b]Rulership fell to his side, the Canteclure's and the area was ruled by another Baron, a real mean, old cuss. There was some sort of revolt and the castle was razed. He nods to the collapsed tower. After it was razed, people started callin' it the Witch's Tower. The old man winks at Rey. You learn sumpin' everyday, eh? Without waiting for a reply, he stroll off into the crowd.

Lia and Hammerfist examine the wizard Hunclay's door and Lia detects no magic auras in the area and Hammerfist discern no traps. The dwarf reaches for the door handle, but just as he is about to grasp it, there is a mummur in the crowd. Turning, the party sees a middle-aged woman approaching the ruin.

You deduce that she is the town Baroness, Lady Origena Devy, arriving with her son, Arnholde. She begins to take stock of the situation and studies, briefly, the obviously over matched deputies, then scans the crowd. Seeing your group, she strides over and reaches out to shake the hand of all. May I ask you names, your the new arrivals in town, no?

"I understand that you are newcomers to our little village and you have been left bereft of jobs after that Silas man was arrested."

She once again shoots a look at the tower, tapping her teeth with two fingers. She turns back and gives your group an appraising look before saying. “Today’s your lucky day. Mulle and Hodd here can’t handle this without the Sheriff to hold their hands, and I want to know what happened here. You seem to be a capable bunch. If you go in there and look through the rubble—find out what happened and why there are kobolds in my town—I’ll pay the lot of you 500 gold pieces. While you’re looking around in the ruins, keep an eye out for any signs of our local eccentric, Hunclay. It seems somewhat suspicious to me that he’s not answering his door. A small crowd has gathered around the rubble of the collapsed tower. Only fragments of the first and second floors still stand. An enormous heap of cracked stone and splintered wood from the tower lies in a low mound here, tumbled partially down the hill to the southeast. The mound of rubble forms a natural ramp that leads up to the now-exposed second floor of the tower above.

The climb up the ramp is tedious as rubble slides under your feet, threatening to send you tumbling back down the slope. All four of you eventually scramble up, Hammerfist requiring a little shove or bracing here and there.

Gaining the top of the slope, you find yourself on the tower's second floor. Open to the sky above, this exposed upper floor contains only some smashed furniture and a sprinkling of rubble. A trap door is set in the floor against the northwest wall, but a stout timber has fallen across it.
