    Dot with a tail

Your latest assignment has brought you to Kaer Maga, the City of Strangers. As you wander the streets, awaiting a briefing, a man approaches, nods, and hands you each a letter bearing the Glyph of the Open Road.

    Opening the letter, it reads:

    Greetings Pathfinders,

As you may have heard, the Decemvirate has decided to extend its protection to Guaril Karela, who has proven himself a valuable informant. Karela has requested the Society’s help to head off an assassination plot against him. We’ve learned that the
Gael family, a rogue Sczarni faction, is behind the plot, and they are operating out of Kaer Maga with the support of some of the city’s ruling factions. As the senior field agents in the area, you are the best equipped to investigate the Gael family and disrupt its plans. Root out where they’re hiding, and shut down their operation.

As you are no doubt aware, politics in the Asylum Stone can be complex and nuanced, even by Absalom’s standards. To avoid stirring up a hornet’s nest, I advise you to do your best to turn the conspirators’ allies against them before striking their hiding place. Keep in mind that past events in Kaer Maga have tarnished the Society’s image in the city. I wouldn’t expect hostility, but flashing a wayfinder is unlikely to impress the locals. Try not to further undermine our image through acts of public mayhem. Since Master Karela is officially under the Society’s protection now, I would remind you that our reputation is on the line. Be efficient.

The ruddy-complexioned tiefling's toothy grin morphs into a look of consternation which is mimicked by a twitch in his tail. "Politics," he spits. "At least there's some sneakin' to be done. Hey, if we end up gettin' caught, we could always pin it on those Aspis bastards, eh?" The thought seems to cheer him up some.

As he goes over the missive once again, he racks his brain to recall anything about this family and their placement in Kaer Maga.

A young Garundi woman who weighs in at a paltry 4'8" and 112 pounds with traditional tanned skin and black hair. She carries some travel and adventuring gear and wears a number of bandages over her eyes. On her belt is a number of scroll tubes and wands, as well as a heavy pick with a skull running through the apex. She seems oblivious to the world around at first glance.

    @ Sczarni/GM:
Kris privately ensures that she's fully able to see 60 feet out (and in the dark), but prefers the guise of a blind seer and that "members of the Esoteric Order of the Palentine Eye" became a staple of her cover story in her last adventure. "Enough about them is known that nobody knows anything about them works well enough for me."

She will be buying a Hat of Disguise so she can disguise as herself, but more... Seer-looking...

Kris "looks" around. "This place feels just like the last. Realistic. Emotional. Not as ocean-y, though I'm not complaining."

I think Our Favourite Uncle is sending me something from one of the boons, but I'm not sure.

Xenobia is a young albino woman of Tien descent. She is of middling height, has long flowing platinum hair, and lavender colored eyes. Her breastplate bears the symbol of Nethys, and is worn over a black and white robe. The right side of her face is covered with an ivory mask, resembling that of the god's displayed on her armor.

Xenobia eyes the sketchy group with slight disinterest. "Let's just remember to keep this subtle. We don't need all of Kaer Maga coming down on us."

There is no extra information to gain, but you do need to try to tracks down leads. The scenario lists Diplomacy only. I assume because you talking to people and trying to keep a low profile. I think we can use KN: local as well. Xeno and Kris, do you want to make a check?

The scenario states that you can hire a guide for 5 gp, but then lists no mechanical benefit for for doing so. This one suffers from the editing errors that have gotten more numerous of late. If you guys hire a guide, I'll give you a benefit. For 5 gp, I'm assuming you do.

After about three hours, the party picks a few good leads concerning the Gaels.....

Your first lead directs you to the Blushing Rose, a brothel located near the center of the Hospice District. There the party meets Miss Feathers, a muscular woman who stands a head taller than the other working ladies. She is in the middle of telling a story about her most awkward romantic entanglements, her booming voice and quick laugh accompanied by dramatic gestures with her feathered boa. As you appraoch, she turns. "Hello dearies! What can I do for you....and you...and you...and YOU!" She says, saving her emphatic "you" for Xenobia.

D'oh. Had the window open too long before posting. Forgot to refresh.
And aye, I think it looses a lot of character not calling Feathers a male at all. But that's all I'll say on that.

Having never met, Rikas cocks an eyebrow at the ... 'lady', but lets the others do the talking. Absent-mindedly, he draws a dagger and starts fiddling with it with one hand.

"We could use a little information from you." Xenobia chimes in, seemingly unphased by the attention.

Miss Feathers nods and sits on a divan, offering seats to the party. As she makes herself comfortable, she launches into a series of stories. "Oh honey, let me tell you about this one fellow. He was a hell-spawn..., she glances at Rikas, "..and what he could do with that tail of his.... She goes on like this for an hour or more before finally getting to a subject of interest.

“I know a lady named Imelda Gael, but not well enough to have met her family. She’s a rough one, all muscles and tattoos and always mad about something. Sharp as a whip crack too, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear she’s gotten herself in trouble.” Feathers says in a gossip-y tone. She rents a lovely little house in the Bis district. I’ll give you directions, though I can tell you she hasn’t been seen there for several days. I doubt she’s left the city, but there are enough nooks and crannies around here that anyone wanting to lie low can do so.”

Feathers doens't even blink at Rikas' statement, then turns to Kris, waving her off. "I just happen to sit and visit for a while. Do not fear, you wouldn't believe, but I know when to keep my mouth shut." She says with a wink.

Andrazi chuckles at the exchange. "So if we wanted to lay low in this town, where could we go?"

Miss Feathers bats her eyes at Andrazi. "Honey, there are more places to lay low in this city than a giant has pet cats!" She says, chuckling at her little joke.

With nothing more productive forthcoming from Miss Feathers, that party follows up on their only lead.

The Bis District is entirely indoors, located inside the hollowed-out southwestern segment of the city wall known as the Ring. The Kiln, an imposing fortress and golem factory, is visible in the district’s center. Giant lamps hang on cables from the roof 80 feet above in artful geometric arrangements. Massive balconies jut from the walls of the Ring, supporting lavish homes for the district’s elite.

Their flickering, magical lights could almost be mistaken for sparkling waterfalls constantly pouring down the terraced stone interior of the Ring.

The directions from Miss Feathers lead you to a smoothed, stone terrace
on the northeast wall of Bis that rises 20 feet above the street level. An enclosed staircase spirals upward toward the home. A statue of a human man stands beside the house’s front door, holding out an everburning torch to light the balcony and entry. The front door is a sturdy wood door locked with a good lock. There is large window on the south side that looks into a living area, but it is fixed and does not open.

Looking through the window, Rikas sees this room’s walls are papered in white with elaborate patterns in gold leaf. Large glass windows provide a commanding view of the district. A comfortable leather armchair occupies one corner, while a glass orb hanging over a round oaken table glows with magical light. A door along the north wall stands slightly ajar.

Rikas notices nothing unusual about the statue, but he does notice a trap on the door. Using your original Disable check. With his fine set of tools, Rikas is able to disarm the trap, then easily unlocks the door.
