Silas recognizes the dogs as the legendary hell hounds. Tilver and Velika know the following:

A typical hell hound stands 4–5 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 120 pounds. Efficient hunters, a favorite pack tactic is to surround prey quietly, then attack with one or two hounds, driving prey toward the rest of the pack with their fiery breath. If the prey doesn’t run, the pack closes in. Hell hounds track fleeing creatures relentlessly.

Hell hounds are particularly favored by fire giants, as the creatures are immune to fire and share the fire giant’s sense of cruelty when it comes to handling intruders. Only when a fire giant goes too far toward treating a relatively intelligent hell hound like a pet do such alliances begin to falter.

They have a powerful bite, are immune to fire, vulnerable to cold and can breathe a cone of fire. Though not as intelligent as a human or dwarf, they are nonetheless far smarter than animals.

I can't beat Tilver's roll so won't roll here. Holys of course pretends he knew all this already, even though he may not have.

"Although such creatures as these are beyond my expertise, their powers recognise my majestic heritage and so their fire should not burn me to the same extent as they would the rest of you. Snapping jaws, however, recognise no such primacy. I therefore suggest that searching for a secret door to bypass them would be preferable."

Dain pulls the Madame's journal out of his pack and flips through it for a few seconds, then stabs his finger at a page. "The book mentions the secret door here. Hmmm....It says that you need a ladder to reach up to the secret door, so it could be a secret trap door in the ceiling, or else it's up high on a wall." He thinks for a moment, "Maybe it's in the ceiling of the room where we found the magic jar of pee? We didn't see any way up from there and there are obviously more tower floors above it that we never found a way into."

The actual passage, for anyone who looks at the book, is:

I have somewhat befriended the Cobbledman. He grows more mad with each day, however. I hid my half of the spiral contrivance in his tower with him. I shall not even tell Radanna. Of course, she will not tell me where she keeps her half, either, but there’s really only one place it could be. Certainly no one could sneak a ladder up to that secret door without her knowing about it.

Tilver is going to check if there's a ladder which he can move. He's going to head to the 'pee jar' room to check the ceiling.

Did I mention the ceiling in the "dance hall" is only 8' high? Tall characters might be able to reach the ceiling, or small ones given a lift.

Tilver, it's not impossible to remove and use those ladders, but they are set into the walls. Breaking the points of attachment might also break the ladder.

The bed thing might work, too.

Silas walks into the dance hall and looks up to see if he can find a secret door around where the tower would be above him.

I did not realize that. I take 20 for a 27 to find a secret door.


There are 25 5'x5' squares in the ceiling. Taking 20 with each square will take you almost an hour. However, after running outside to take a look from the bridge again, you manage to guess where the base of the square tower is in relation to the hall below. Taking 20 after that only requires about ten minutes of work.

Silas discovers a small finial decoration which rotates aside to reveal a hidden key hole in the ceiling.

On a random side note I think you should take 20 on searching to find traps as often as possible. If we have buff spells rolling it might not be worth while, but in cases like this there is no reason not to just take our time and not get hit by Mass Harm/Mass Cause Light Wounds traps and all die. Although if you just roll 20s on all the searches I guess that doesn't matter so much. :P

Tilver is tapping around the keyhole, when he suddenly stops. "Everyone, back away. Quickly now." He squints at the ceiling for a moment, looking like he might poke at something with the butt of his spear, but then lowers it.

"There's something there, I'm sure of it. If you don't have the right key, then it'll trigger. Find me something to stand on, I need to see if I can disable it." Once up near the ceiling, Tilver takes a moment to study the keyhole and carefully inserts his tools to try and disable the trap.

Dain gives Magill a look, and the raccoon scampers over to the stairs and down. Dain follows, but as he is descending he pauses to give Tilver a thumbs up gesture, then continues to limp downwards.

"I should be able to get up and lower the rope." Silas takes a run and jumps up the ledge to pull himself up.

Acrobatics to jump up: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

So with that I should be able to catch a ledge that is about 11 feet tall I believe. Since the roof was only 8 ft that will hopefully be plenty.


Silas scrambles up into the tower room. The floor is stone and the ceiling is twelve feet high. An iron ladder built into the tower’s stone wall rises up to a wooden trap door in the ceiling.

The walls here have niches carved into them. Many are empty, but flasks of liquid sit in four of them. In another rests a bit of something wrapped in cloth. In a sixth niche sits a small grey idol—it appears to
be a demonic figure made of compressed ash.

Tilver climbs up to see what the chamber holds. He pulls out his lantern and it sparks to life. "Holys, Velika, are any of these things magic?" He peers at the demonic idol in particular.

Dain waits for Velika to climb up the rope, then gives Magill a boost so that she can pull herself up into the square tower. He then climbs up the rope himself, and pulls the rope up after him.

He watches Velika cast her spell, and waits to see what she discovers.

Taking 10 on the Climb checks gives Dain a 9 (because of negative level) and Magill a 20.


Everyone makes it up to the small tower room.

The liquid in the vials is non-magical, as is the statuette, but the object wrapped in cloth is magical. It turns out to be a small block of incense.
