Mikhail's cutlass rings harmlessly off the monster's enormous breastplate just as Piotr's spell seems merely to infuriate the beast. But Ahran's blade strikes true, piercing the mighty sinews below the monster's knee. Just then, the mighty owlbear slips on an eldritch banana peel and crashes to the ground. Furious, it lashes out at its tormentor.

The Talonquake slashes Ahran with two tremendous swipes of its paws, each the size of a bear. The Chelaxian warrior is nearly killed and the mighty owlbear sweeps him up in its claws. But it lashes out at Mikhail with its terrifying beak and the warpriest lunges out of the way of danger.

Unfortunately, it looks like your Disabled and not Unconscious. Since your still conscious I think it will continue to rip into you. Giving you the liberating command will give you the escape artist check you can get out and that may save your character. Its not technically a standard action due to the spell, but you will probably be counted as doing something strenuous and then fall prone and at -1 HP but at that point it likely goes after a greater threat.

Male Human Sorcerer(Fey) (Bard) 10 - [HP 98/98 | F+18, R+17, W+18 | AC 25 | Perception +15 | Focus Points: 2/3] [Exploration Mode = Search]

Aristu releases control over his illusion in order to gather energy from his source. Chanting and tracing eldritch patterns with his hands, green bolts of force launch across the trampled ground to strike the giant beast.

force damage: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 3, 3) + 3 = 11

Aristu takes a step back and prepares to draw more arcane energy.

The illusion of Tuskgutter continues to paw the ground and snort menacingly at the owlbear.

Piotr moves about before summoning a sphere of flames to burn the owlbear.

Move - 35 ft
Standard - cast Sphere of Flames (6 rds, 2d6 fire, Reflex DC 16 to negate damage)

Flaming Sphere damage (Reflex DC 16 to negate): 2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6

Melee attacks on a prone adjacent foe get +4 to hit. Foes with the grappled condition take a -4 penalty to Dexterity. This results in a net bonus of +6 to hit the owlbear this turn.

Ahran is conscious and Disabled at exactly 0 hit points. No need to stabilize but you can still take a move or standard action. Which might knock you out.

Reflex save vs. flaming sphere: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Thorn flashes in Alister's hand as the bard slashes at the downed juggernaut. His blows cut deep but the maddened beast seems barely to notice. Likewise Mikhail's sword slashes the Talonquake while Aristu and Piotr blast it with force and fire.

No. You can't use a Hero Point like that. They can only be used to take an action or to benefit yourself. I'm not seeing an action Aristu to could take that is reasonably likely to stop what's about to happen.

I'm not happy about it.

Like Aristu, I don't see how Piotr could use a Hero Point here with a reasonable chance of saving Ahran.

Is Talonquake still prone? I didn't see where the owlbear got back to its feet.

Good point. I had forgotten that. Why not go ahead and put the spell's area on the map?

Being prone imposes a -4 penalty to attacks. That penalty would not have made a difference to any of those three attacks, however.

Mikhail will lead the way into the cave with his sword out and ready.

The heroes of the Sword Marches enter the dank lair of the maddened owlbear and work their way past strange shrieking fungus, past many natural hazards and deadly spiders and a pair of wily spider-men (Piotr calls them ettercaps), finally winning through the true lair of the Talonquake.

There, they find the rotting corpse of another, smaller owlbear, slain by many spears and arrows. Around the body are the corpses of dozens of men, most in leather armor, all killed by the great beast. The corpses of two owlbear cubs also lie nearby, along with one surviving cub. It is starving and hoots pitifully next to the body of its dead mother.
