From a letter you received today:

And thus, we have elected to hire Professionals of the Highest Quality in order to Preserve and Protect our interests in Trade with the northern City-States of the Freelands. Gentlemen, you are these Professionals. Master Talwyn, Wizard of the Third Order; and Master Aethon, Summoner of the Second Order and Seer of the of the Second Order; we most Humbly request that you track down the Bandits by the Names of Samuel O'Finn (Wizard, suspected of the Fourth Order), Stonealf Spearedge (a Dwarven Warrior, suspected to be a previous member of the Monolith Guard), and their Goblin Companion who is known to be a Foul and Brutal Knave. Upon successfully Slaying or Capturing all of these Cruel Hooligans, a sum of 2000 Scepters will be paid to Master Talwyn and Master Aethon. Please contact Mosker ul Daniel an Macarana for further Information. His Address is enclosed.

Sincerely, Marco ul Sebastian an Viscross, Merchant, speaking on behalf of a coalition of merchant, tradesmen, and travelers.

You have been contacted by a group of merchants including the exceedingly rich Marco Viscross due to their problem with the aforementioned bandits, who recently began attacking traveling merchants and robbing them of all their wealth - and they have shown no compunctions against killing.

The reason they contacted you is because you two are professional adventurers, of a sort. Despite the booming economy in Atahl, neither of you managed to find a job - perhaps due to living in Taloen, also known as the Magekeep, which is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, rendering jobs few and far between.

You met at a New Year's Fair last year, after simultaneously tripping a thief who had been about to escape with the wallet of a merchant, who ended up hiring both of you as escorts to his carriage for three months. Since then, you have worked on various jobs, such as escorts, resource-gatherers, and detectives.

This is the first job offer you have received in three weeks.

What do you do?

Go to the resources folder I linked in the first post. You can see a map there and there is also a "Terms" document which will help you speak like a native. More will be added later.

"Hmmm. Some bandits, eh? Doesn't sound too tough, Talwyn. And I'm getting pretty short on Scepters. What do you think?"

Jeez, guys, way to go easy on a guy during his first time.

Remember, put what you say in bold and "quotation marks". I refer you to the first post in the discussion thread.

"Weird, it's as if some one is trying to communicate with me through an incorrect medium."
Placing one hand on his brow in an expression of minor distaste, Talwyn sighs, "Nevertheless, I shall attempt to communicate. Perhaps, dear Thekitos, you should consider the fact that one of their number could well be a wizard of the fourth order. This could easily tip the scales in the favor of the bandits we seek to destroy. That said, I'm hardly wealthy, so I defer to you judgement. What say you?"

What is the order of the monolith?
history: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18

The Monolith Guard is an elite order of Dwarven warriors who guard Urd from the invading goblinoids of Umbrare. They are known for wearing nigh-indestructible stone plate forged from granite.

Also, remember: you can only edit a post within an hour of posting it.

Aethon strokes his chin for a moment before speaking. "Well, we should definitely cautious, but between the two of us, I think we'll manage. I say we do it, though it might be good to get help before we go."

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

"Of course. It would be unwise for two such non-martial individuals as ourselves to dive headlong into danger without a guard of sorts." Talwyn strokes his beard thoughtfully. "And perhaps it would be wise to "read up" on these vagabonds, for who knows, the search may yet yield useful fruit. Shall we visit the inn? I have some small wealth for just such an occasion."

What is the name of the inn we would be visiting?

If you're looking to hire warriors, the Steel Guild is the best place to go.

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Eyes sparkling, Talwyn corrects himself. "I have had a flash of inspiration. Let us visit the Steel Guild. Their type are always looking for just this sort of trouble."

You enter through a large pair of double doors into the Guild. Inside, there's a large commons room with doors leading out to rooms for the negotiation of contracts. You can see a huge, shiningly bald black man in an dirtied apron who you know to be the Overseer of this branch of the Guild.

He calls out to you, saying, "Hail, stranger! By your stature, I'm guessing you are on the search for workers, not work. Hahahaha!"

Talking to him is the best way to find warriors of the sort you are looking for. The pricing for this sort of job is generally (level^2)*3 GP per day of work, plus expenses, plus 25 gold for the family if they die.

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"Indeed, sir. We have received some work of our own, and are looking for some strong arms to accompany us. Anyone looking to hunt down some bandits and earn some Scepters along the way is welcome to join us."
Aethon turns to Talwyn.
"How many hands do you think we'll need, Talwyn? I have a little over a hundred Scepters. You?"

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn shruggs and mutters, "Some three-hundred and sixty, if we are about the business of flaunting wealth." He eyes the overseer and questions, "Do you have any men-at-arms to suit our purpose, honorable sir?"

"Hmm. How many you looking to hire? I'm guessing two or three, if you'll be bandit hunting."

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"Two should do nice, don't you think, Talwyn? Who are your two best men?"

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn adopts a pensive look and glances at Aethon. "How does that sound, friend? Two? Three? Or perhaps you have a different leaning? I personally favor two - one guard apiece, and enough left for us to still reap a reward. Or perhaps a pack of tyros? Mayhap we should learn more of our prey before choosing our guard. Do you think a visit to our employer would be in order?"

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"Hmmm. Perhaps you are right. More information could be useful before coming to any decisions." Aethon turns to the Overseer. "My apologies, would you be willing to wait a short while while we come to a decision?"

"Of course, laddie! Of course I'm glad to wait. Care for a scone before you go? First one's free."

Regardless of whether or not you take a scone, he waves you off with a hearty "Come back soon!"

I assume you all go to Mosker?

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Correct.

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

Indeed.

I'll have a map of the city up in a bit, but ya'll basically live in Baker Street-esque flats in the eastern living quarters of the city.

You go to the address enclosed in the letter you received. It leads you to a small door with a simple placard on it that simply says "Office of Mosker ul Daniel an Macarana".

I'm going to assume you go inside.

Talwyn knocks, and the two wait a moment before hearing a bolt slide from inside.

An impeccably-dressed man opens the door, and glances from Aethon to Talwyn briefly, before saying "Ah. Master Talwyn and Master Aethon, I presume. My name is Mosker ul Daniel an Macarana. Please, come in."

He leads you into a cluttered room with curtains over the windows. There is a strange sense of borderline-obsessive organisation to the place, despite the first impression of chaos. He waves at two seats set in front of a worn ash wood desk. "Please, sit down."

"Now, you know the basics about the job. We suspect their base of operations is somewhere just north of Atahl's jurisdiction. I have a list-" He pauses momentarily to pull a document from a shelf behind him without looking "-that has some more details and the addresses of some witnesses to the tactics used by the bandits." He places the document on the desk. "I would advise talking to as many people in that file as you can manage. If you have any questions about the job, please ask. I would like to have your answer by next Wednesday."

It is currently Friday, by the way. I'm just going to use real world months and weekdays to make everything easier.

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn takes the document from the desk and turns to Aethon.
"I find his advice to be reasonable. Do you have any objections, or should we begin witness-hunting immediately?" He raises an eyebrow mockingly. "I feel your prodigious people skills will be of some use at this time."
After a slight pause, he murmurs, "If not your uncanny wit..."

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"I think it would be wise to meet with the witnesses as soon as possible; the more information we have on these bandits, the more prepared we can be." Aethon pats Talwyn on the shoulder. "And it would probably be for the best if you let me do the talking, eh, Talwyn?"

Mosker watches you, utterly expressionless.

"Very well. There are some notes on them enclosed as well. Is there anything else you need before you go?"

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn shrugs. "Nothing comes to my mind, and I somehow doubt much will come to my companion's. Thank you for your assistance, honorable sir."
He gives Aethon a return pat on the shoulder, guiding him towards the door. "Most reputable and guileless of friends, I will ever consent to the useful application of your personal..." He glances heavenward, then sidelong at Aethon, "...magnetism, providing magnets play the part of magnets, and not synapses."

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

Aethon grins. "I don't really know what you just said, but I liked the sound of it. Sy-napses? Guile? You're gonna have to teach me some of those. Now, let's be off before it gets late and we have to wake people to ask them questions." He takes a look at the list. "I guess the best way to do this would be to just start at the top and move towards the bottom, so we don't miss anyone."
He pauses for a second, then turns to Macarana and gives him a winning smile and polite bow.
"Oh, and thanks for your help, Good Mosker ul Daniel al Macarana; we'll be sure to apply ourselves to the best of our abilities. Your little bandit problem will be over before you know it."

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

As he walks to the first of the witnesses, Talwyn reads the notice aloud to Thekitos.

The file mentions Jack Greenbeard, a dwarven merchant; Jeremiah Smith, a caravan guard; Sara Wenselslas, the daughter of a merchant; Matthias Armstrong, captain of a band of mercenaries; and Julius Kane, the only wizard to have witnessed the bandit's resident caster in action.

Mosker's Notes:

Jack Greenbeard
May be at the Fat Dragon, a local inn. Heavy drinker, gambles and is good at it. Trades in statuary and jewelry.

Jeremiah Smith
A Tiefling. Ashamed of it his heritage. Hides it well. Oni-Spawn.

Sara Wenselslas
Traumatized. Prone to crying. A Sorcerer of the First Order, though not open about it.

Matthias Armstrong
Insulted by his defeat. Slightly sociopathic. Abused in his childhood.

Julius Kane
Wizard of the Fourth Order. Master craftsman. Triple widower. In his late seventies but is in excellent health for a man his age.

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn pauses, his narration complete, then says to Aethon, "Well, Aethon, any preferences? I have no particular leaning, as I plan to talk to all of them, but perhaps you do."

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"Well, I think either Greenbeard or Matthias sounds like a good place to start. Drunks and the proud are easy to coerce, so getting them to cooperate shouldn't be too challenging. Hopefully."

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

"Your confidence is inspiring. Lead on, O Great Diplomat - the path to Greenbeard is as clear as the noonday sun."

1d2 ⇒ 2

After ringing the bell by Jack Greenbeard's door, a well-clad halfling answers the door. "Guests for Master Greenbeard?"

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

"Indeed. My name is Talwyn Sabrauska, and this is my companion, the honorable..."

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

Aethon bows deeply and beams at the Halfling. "Aethon Thekitos, at your master's service. We have some questions to ask Mister Greenbeard, and would be honored to see him as soon as possible." He pauses for a moment before continuing. "Do you have a name, my good friend? I like to keep things as personal as possible, and names are a good first step, I find." He smiles broadly at the Halfling again.

"Ah, you may call be Deeds."

He shuffles awkwardly, and then says "Please follow me."

He leads you into the house, which is a mixture of the geometric designs favored by dwarves and the opulence frequent among the successful merchants of the Freelands.

Deeds leads you up to a heavy wooden door. "Mister Greenbeard? A Master Talwyn and a Master Aethon here to see you."

A thunderous, slurred voice booms out from the other side. "Bring them in!"

The halfling opens the door into a room more magnificent than the rest of the house.

On a raised mahogany desk sits a dwarf with a magnificent green beard. "Hail, friends! How can humble old Jack Greenbeard help you today? Want some Saigh?" he says, gesturing to the half-empty bottle on his desk and a few shot glasses.

Saigh is an extremely strong and expensive liqour.

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

"Actually," Talwyn replies, "While I am no enemy of a good drink, my companion and I are here on business related to the bandit attack you survived, and were hoping you might provide us some insight as to the nature of their strength, so that we might more easily destroy them."
He pauses.
"On second thought, I'll have a shot of Saigh, if you're willing. I have heard much of the potency of dwarven brews, but have never had the opportunity to taste such a respected liquor."

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"Some Saigh sounds like a treat, if I may say so." Aethon waits for drinks to be poured before continuing. He takes a drink of the alcohol and speaks again. "So, I hear you may know some things about a particular group of bandits, who we've been contracted to deal with. Any truth to that?" He grins widely and takes another drink of alcohol.

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn downs his shot, his eyes rolling at Aethon's statement.
He muses, "Interesting. So this is dwarven alcohol. Perhaps, if I were wealthier... No. Now is not the time."

Pouring himself another glass, Jack Greenbeard roars "Ah, yes, the bandits! They practically robbed me into poverty - I had to cut down my Saigh consumption by fifty percent-" he pauses to pour himself another shot "-but still, I imagine you want me to tell you what they did."

"It happened pretty fast - thundering hooves, and a man shouting in some weird language. There were horses everywhere, damaging my carriage and next thing I knew, I was tossed out by the side out of the rode and everything I had with me was gone!"

Tsking disapprovingly (and oddly coherent despite being on his sixth drink that you've seen), Jack Greenbeard shakes his head. "Robbed blind by horses! They tell me it was the work of a wizard, and lemme tell you, I believe 'em. You can't trust most wizards - they're sneaky. Damn good customers, though!"

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

"The horses were riderless?"

"Riderless, but they had saddles and the whole get up. Not fancy, mind you - wouldn't be caught dead on something so plain - but there."

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

"Hmm... Sounds like..."
Arcana Horses: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
"And the talking... Reminds me of..."
Arcana Languages: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23

The horses sound like some kind of summoning spells. You have no idea as to what the language could be.

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

"Well, mysterious horses aside, you didn't see anyone? Nothing to point to anyone, not even afterwards? Aethon leans back and takes a big drink. "Damn. I guess getting a lead can't always be so easy."

"I got a glimpse of a human in an overcoat. Couldn't see over the horses, though."

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn takes a deep breath.
"Well sir, we thank you for your patience, and hope to bring you news of their defeat soon. Until then, happy feasting. Come on, Aethon."

"Have a fantastic day, and catch that bastard before I have to go on another trip!"

He laughs uproariously at what must evidently have been a joke as Deeds comes in (acknowledging the "joke" with a token laugh" to lead you out.

Where to next?

Male Human Summoner/Oracle 5 | Perception: +1 Sense Motive: +6 | AC: 14 FF: 12 T: 13 | Fort + 4 Ref +3 Will +5 | Init +4 | CMD 14

I think we should head to Matthias.
"Well, shall we visit this Matthias Armstrong next? Hopefully we will discover more there than we did here."

When you arrive at Matthias Armstrong's house, you knock on the door and are invited in by a booming voice.

The man inside smiles at you, but his eyes have an odd deadness about them. In his hands lies a razor-sharp klar, which he is currently in the process of polishing.

"What do you want?"

Male Human Diviner/True Professional 5| Perception: +5 Sense Motive: +9 | AC: 15 FF: 12 T: 14 | Fort +6 Ref +8 Will +6 | Init +6 | CMD 14

Talwyn steps forward quickly, giving a cursory nod.
"We seek retribution for the fallen. Gold for ourselves. Many things. But right now we want information. You are a man of business, so I won't waste time. The bandits who attacked you - tell us everything you can."
