Sarkast:
The moat's bank is a steep climb that may be difficult for the more heavily-armoured members of the group. It's nothing to Sarkast, who quickly scampers up, and then carefully peers in.

Within is an open area filled with rubble where the wall has partially crumbled into the moat. It looks like there were once several rooms here but they have completely collapsed. There is no lighting or decoration, just stone wall. Another, larger room is to the east which is lost to the darkness. To the south, Sarkast can distantly hear angry muttering and smell blood.

Map is updated. The other PC tokens are there but ignore them. You're on the centre left. It's a huge map.

----

While Sarkast is out scouting, Irabeth approaches the group.

"I need to go in with you I think," she says as she eyes Citadel Drezen unhappily. "I started this whole mess with Staunton Vhane, I need to finish it."

Noting that the area is currently unoccupied, Sarkast takes a moment to try to create a path to help the others climb in.

Is it possible to create a path to make the climb easier? If it requires Knowledge (engineering) Sarkast will need advice, but if his own knowledge of climbing and creative use of Disable Device could help, he'll do that before returning to the group to report.

Sakarst:
Although you don't have the basic knowhow on how to set up the hill for climbing, you have Aron and Anevia with you and Aron has extensive experience in this sort of work. He carries some basic tools with him, and with some ropes and some carefully dug foot-holes a basic system is set up that will allow people to climb up into the hole.

"I have a lieutenant who can keep command of the troops in the meantime - I've already let Garrick know he can expect temporary command in my absence. Aron and Anevia are going to run guerilla attacks against the few weak points in the citadel, that should keep those inside distracted. Aravashnial has volunteered to scour the area for potions and so if you return here at the end of each day, he will hopefully have found some new supplies for you."

Unless you ahve further actions I'll pop you in the Citadel later on today to get things moving.

.

Hitting fast forward.

With Aron's help, Sarkast manages to set up a neat means of entry and exit from the moat. They return and get a quick briefing that Irabeth will be accompanying the group. With their goal firmly in mind, the retrieval of the Sword of Valor, the group beds down for the night ready to move out the next day.

It is clear that there is a stalemate where the massive Citadel seems to have a sparse, but dangerous population who dare not face the full army, while the army itself cannot enter the Citadel without suffering massive casualties. At the crack of dawn, Anevia and Aron are already gone, circling the Citadel with their plan of guerilla attacks, distractions, and inconveniences to its denizens. Aravashnial has taken off to begin scouring Drezen for magical supplies.

The group meet up, gather supplies, and make for Sarkast's entrance. The footholds and rope rigging work perfectly, and soon the group find themselves in the west of the citadel, north of what Aron marked as a garrison on the map.

This room appears to have once been several smaller chambers, which have all crumbled into the moat. Daylight streams in from the west, but further in is utter darkness. Immediately east of their entrance is a grand hall. The walls are bare and uninviting, but show the strength of good dwarven stonework.

There are doors in all directions; double doors and a single door to the east, two matching sets of doors to the north and south, and double doors to the west.

Map is updated. Remember you can reference the hand-drawn map to figure out where you are. I'll make assumptions on party order unless its laid out explicitly. I need to know who has light.

There are two doors in the south, is the sound heard through both, as if they lead to the same room? If so, either door will do. If not, please place Sarkast by the one with the sound.

Sarkast gets his knife in hand and waits for everyone to get into position. He crouches slightly, making room for Nilus to be able to reach over him if needed.

The sound comes from both doors - they apparently lead to the same room.

The group gather around the two doors, pause for a moment, and then swing them open! A grisly site awaits them in the room. Dozens of beds fill this wide room, jamed together with little space between them. A dozen decapitated human bodies lie in a heap to the west, while a dozen human heads sit to the east. A fierce-eyed woman with wild hair, spiked shoulderpads, and a huge sword stands, waiting for you.

"DEG! Du drepte dem! De døde av min bladet, men du drepte dem ! Herre Staunton vil holde sin hånd og spare meg hvis jeg gir ham

Staunton Vhane:

This AP does a strange job of building Staunton as the big bad behind the scenes but doesn't show the PCs that much. That said, you very much know who he is.

Staunton Vhane is a famous dwarven paladin who Irabeth uncovered as a traitor to the crusade and agent of the demons who had been betraying the crusades for decades. He was uncovered by Irabeth as being a key agent responsible for the fall of Kenabres, but escaped from her before he could be brought to justice. He is now commander of Citadel Drezen.

Sarkast rushes in, one dagger slamming into the Kellid woman's ribs. He slashes out twice more without joy, but the final attack scores deeply as well, slashing her over her eyes and causing blood to pour and obscure her vision.

"Ikke spille dum med meg! Og de døde for deres feil - jeg var barmhjertig!"

Kellid:

"Do not play the fool with me! And they died for their failure - I was merciful!"

There are a decent amount of empty rooms in the citadel so when searching an area I'll open up a little more of the area to move things along.

Irabeth, who had been watching the group's back against any reinforcements comes in to look over the bound woman, shaking her head sadly.

"You have great faith Nilus, I am shamed by your devotion. That said, we appear to have not been noticed. I haven't heard anything." She looks back in the direction the group came from.

"It would take very little effort for me to get back to camp - I can bring our prisoner back to be taken in and questioned. Let me return our prisoner while you explore this area."

They find that the garrison is attached to the southwest battlements, which afford a very nice view of the occupying armies and access to a couple of old catapults. Nothing of value or interest is found in this section of the citadel otherwise.

Map has been updated. Irabeth has offered to return the prisoner for you.

Nilus bows to Irabeth You honor me. I would greatly appreciate your assistance. and Nilus will help Irabeth take the big woman to the precipice of their climb and watch them go down the side of the Keep.

Once this is done, he lifts Radiance and says There will be foes that cannot or will not be redeemed. These we will slay. the "we" he means Radiance and himself.

"Someone grab that sword. We may need it to cut our way through a wall or locked door. What say we let Irabeth take the armor with her. I don't think any of us will use it, and it will only slow us down if we have to leave quickly. The potions, though, those we keep."

Is it safe to assume there is nothing of note in the rooms you opened up? If not, assume going forward standard take 10 Perception on such areas.

Also, do we expect the entrance to the real vault to be in the false vault, or in the chapel? If the former, let's head north; if the latter, east.

Sarkast checks each of the rooms in turn, then leads the way deeper into the citadel, eyes and ears peeled.

.

The entrance to the real vault is in the false vault. And yeah, I'm going to assume Sarkast goes over everything with taking 10 perception unless otherwise stated.

The group (eventually) opens the doors to the north, which reveals a very wide hallway leading northwards that forks eastwards on the side. Doors line the west wall. Stark dwarven practicality is the defining feature in the citadel's construction. There is no decoration, but the hallways are at least clean and free of the horrid stench and gore which has thus far been the trademark of the demons.

Most frustratingly, the doors are all iron, and they are all locked. Opening the north double doors takes a frustratingly long time for Sarkast to make his way through the complicated locking mechanism. Along the west, the group spies an empty, spartan room, its original use long since forgotten. At the end of the hallway are three doors leading east, and two leading west.

Listening at the west doors shows nothing but silence. The faint sound of movement comes from the east door.

Map is updated. All doors are iron and locked with DC 35 disable device checks to open.

Stepping back from the door, Sarkast quietly tells the others, "I hear movement. These doors are taxing my ability, and opening them would certainly give us away. I suggest we use the magic chime, and prepare to rush in."

He takes the Chime of Opening from his pack, and waits for the others to prepare.

Nilus holds Radiance ready and nods to the man.

"I would like to point out that we just picked up an adamantine greatsword. It should make quick work of any lock, hinge, door, or wall that we need to get through."

As a GM who has had plenty of groups use adamantine weapons to do THIS, I await the coming derailment of plans with glee

Nilus just gives Ayesha an odd look. Do you have some personal vendetta against this building?

.

Ding!

Chime: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

The group hear a few clicks as the door tries to open, but the chime fails to completely open it. It appears this door may be too complicated for the chime's magic without some extremely good luck.

After the chime failed to open the door, Ayesha cocked an eyebrow at Nilus. "Only in that I don't wish to be in here any longer than necessary. Care to try the adamantine lockpick now?"

Crap, I forgot it had to make a caster level check.

Sarkast tries the magic, to no avail. He puts this chime away and asks, "If anyone has any enchantments that would enhance my own abilities, I might be able to get through in time, but it would still take luck and several tries." He looks back at Ayesha. "That sword may be our only choice, unless we want to try to go around from another direction."

Just to be sure, you did remember that it automatically dispels hold portal or arcane lock, and just needs the check against the lock DC? (Hoping ...)

.

Locks are not magical. Just an endless parade of bastards.

.

I need an action guys.
