"I know nothing about closing off these portals. Can you see a weakness in the ceiling or wall where we can bury the rift?"

perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

.

Ayesha looks over the cavern carefully, trying to find some sort of weak point whereby the cavern could be triggered to collapse. Over top of the queen's chamber she notices some cracks in the ceiling, but without any real knowledge of engineering she'd be unable to do much about it. If only the army brought with them some sort of expert on siege warfare and sapping...

As the group looks over the ceiling, there's a certain strange KRAAA sound from the portal. Their presence near this gateway to the abyss has attracted attention, and as they turn to watch an enormous demon stalks its way out! A cloud of spores and a trail of feathers surrounds this twisted cross between a man and a gigantic vulture. It lets out a screeching cry and leaps to attack.

Knowledge Planes DC 19:

This is a well-known demon, a vrock. One of the most infamous of its kind, the vrocks are profane champions of the Abyss and embody rage, violence, and hatred in a wya few other demons do. They are ravenous, grotesquely opportunistic, and delight in bloodshed. The legend is they are formed of the souls of only the most vile, hate-filled humans.

For every 5 you beat the knowledge planes check by you can ask a question.

Initiative:

Dejik: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Nilus: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Ayesha: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Ronan: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Jinxx: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Sarkast: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Vrock: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Looking around quickly and spotting the group, the vrock takes off into the air and and begins flapping overhead. As it flies over the group, it lets out a horrid screech, which shakes the entire cave.

Everyone must make a DC 23 fort save or be stunned! The vrock is flying 20' overhead, directly above Ronan, Aravashnial, and Dejik. You can all go!

Ayesha was so caught up in trying to find a way to close the portal that she really wasn't prepared for the giant turkey to burst through the rift and attack. Her limbs seized up and she was locked in place, helpless to turn a defense or offense to the attacking demon. Ayesha stared at her numbed limbs in horror as her beloved scimitar dropped from her grasp to ring loudly on the cave floor.

Oh, this is not good.

The game doesn't specify, but it's a constitution-based save so would not be fear or compulsion.

Nilus and Sarkast both drop their weapons as the screech pierces their ears.

.

At 1 min a level he still has his wings. I'll GMPC Jinxx just to get to round two.

Jinxx leaps from the ground at the vrock, slamming into the flapping demon! However, Jinxx's clawing and biting is to no avail as the vrock has a tough, leathery hide.

Aravashnial's Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Aravashnial is similarly stunned by the vrock's powerful shriek!

With a squawk the vrock flies away from the party, across the hall before alighting on the ground. There, it goes into a bizarre dance, and a portal begins to open beside it!

The ringing in everyone's ears begins to subside as the horror of the vrock's shriek fades.

Everyone is up!

As the ringing in her head subsided, Ayesha stooped to grab her scimitar from the ground. In one swift movement, she pelted towards the demon, intent on closing the distance before the creature could summon more allies to the fray.

2 move actions: pick up scimitar, and close distance

GM:
I placed Ayesha on the map where a normal movement would take her. If Ronan casts haste, then that would allow me to get in contact with the demon. I just don't want to influence his actions by posting this in the open.

Jinxx rushes in at the casting Vrock, leaping upon the ravenlike demon! However, without Dejik's spell to bless his claws, the eidolon is unable to do enough damage to overcome the demon's resistance.

Arvashnial, ignoring his dropped staff, quickly weaves a spell. He points triumphantly at the vrock who shrieks, his portal having been counter-spelled.

"That's a vrock! You need to bless your weapons and watch for the spores coming from its body!"

Sarkast nods thanks to Dejik before flying into battle again. Holding his cold iron spear in both hands, he darts in and out with speed enhanced by both Ronan's spell and divine power.

Spend a mythic point for Fleet Charge. With hasted movement, move wide around the Vrock to get into flank with Ayesha avoiding the Vrock's reach. Follow that up with a full attack action, using the extra attack from Haste but not two weapon fighting.

As Ayesha charges the vrock it swings out, using its enormous range! Ayesha catches a claw in the side, fouling her swing.

Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 24 Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 3) + 5 = 11

Nilus, however, is far more fortunate as Radiance slashes the enormous demon brutally! Blood with a sickening, purplish colour sprays out and the vrock calls out in pain.

Sarkast, after having missed, leaps from his position and lands directly on the vrock's back! Straddling it, he slams down three times with his spears, supernaturally hasted. The bless spell from Dejik seems to have done its work as the vrock's hide isp unctured like paper. It screams in agony, throwing Sarkast off.

The vrock rears back, and a puff of choking, horrible black spores flies off of the creature! Ayesha, Nilus, Dejik, and Jinxx are horrified to see green vines growing from their skin.

Spores: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Aravashnial quickly chants a spell, and a green arrow flies from his hands, slamming into the vrock! However, the acid does not seem to harm the vrock.

Acid Arrow: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

The vrock then leaps at Sarkast, slashing and biting at the rogue. Sarkast takes two claws, is bitten brutally on the shoulder, and then smacked to the ground with the vrock's wings leaving Sarkast a bloody mess.

DING! Welcome to level seven!

Nilus and Ayesha set upon the vrock. The brutal cleaving blade of Ayesha's scimitar manages to completely sever the vrock's foot. It collapses to the ground and Nilus raises up Radiance before chopping down viciously. Its head comes off, and the demon lies dead before the party. Somewhat redundantly, Dejik's spiritual weapon stabs into the corpse before vanishing.

Dejik quickly chants a spell, and as Iomedae's blessing washes over the group, the vines shrivel up and fall off.

Aravashnial looks wearily at everyone.

"I think we've done what we came here to do. The question of what to do with the portal remains, but unless we have a solution here we can confer back with the army."

Dejik reels and staggers forward, clutching her head in her hands. My head...so dizzy...

She takes a deep breath and borrows Nilus's arm to steady herself. When she looks up again a few seconds later, the scar across her face has faded noticeably, and her mouth falls open in surprise.

I-I can see the whole cavern! She spins around and looks up. Even the ceiling! It's still all shades of gray, but I can see!

She runs towards Aravashniel, then stops short. Oh...no...it does fade away...still, it's nearly twice as far as I could see before! She picks up bow and gives Aravashniel a quick hug. Maybe I won't have to give this away after all.

Dejik's blindsense extends to 60 ft now. (Coincidently, from where she was standing, the cavern walls were all within 60 feet, so that got her hopes up.) :-)

Sarkast smiles as Dejik heals his wounds. His expression becomes one of astonishment as Dejik looks around, her eyes less clouded than before. "Surely the gods are smiling on us and rewarding us for our actions.

When Aravashnial suggests a magic lock and bringing reinforcements, he agrees. "That sounds like our best option, then."

Aravashnial frowns over at Ronan.

"You know... that should close it permanently. Try it!"

Ronan looks over at Aravashnial "I hope you are right." then he walks over to the portal and concentrates to cast Dimensional Anchor on the portal

Ronan waves his hands, chanting the spell. He slowly twists his hand, closing his fist. The portal shudders violently, and as Ronan's fist closes, it snaps shut.

With the vescavor hive dealt with, the group returns to their entrance where Aron and several others have lowered a series of ropes. Everybody is hauled out, and the awful, mind-render insanity of the vescavors is finally over.

A huge cheer sounds up from the army as the group returns. The execution of Nurah had been miserable for morale and put a pall on the morning's march, and the good news is well received. The vescavor swarm seems to have been completely dispersed; Aron's reasoning is that the horrid insects are incapable of independent thought in any meaningful way, and with the influence of the queen gone, they must find a new one. Soon, the army is mobilized once more and ready to march.

Several hours pass as the group continues through the edge of the Worldwound towards Drezen. The land itself is an enemy. Sure steps on the hard ground occasionally give away, with the land crumbling beneath causing at least one broken ankle amongst the paladins. Howling, brutal wind slows the march and despite the total lack of life in the area, a swarm of biting flies appears at least once, spreading misery through the ranks. Still, the attitude of the army is hopeful. Something great may be done this day.

Finally, with the sky slowly darkening (the sun has always remained red and indistinct in this cursed land), Citadel Drezen appears in the distance. Irabeth gives the call to halt the march.

Irabeth rides up on her brown palfrey to the group, pointing out in the distance.

"There she is. We need to plan, scout, and prepare for what lies ahead of us. Aron and Anevia have already volunteered to scout. If any of you who are stealthy enough wish to join them, let me know. Once we have our intelligence, we can then decide how we approach. Otherwise, get some rest. It's been quite the day."

The army is striking camp for the evening. I'll need Ayesha's quartermaster roll and anything you wish to do in the evening.

Ayesha made her way back to the camp to find herself once more buried in the accolades of the army, along with the others. She retired to her tent early to look over the daily reports, smiling at the efficiency of the last couple of days. It seemed that the new methods were taking hold, and the individual unit logistics officers were starting to take initiative.

When all was done, she said her goodnights to the others and blew out the lamps. It had been a long day, and the stess of the day has nearly drained her. She needed a good nights rest and meditation in the morning if they were to assault a keep.

Sarkast, Anevia, and Aron all head out, splitting up to scout the area while the army settles in for the night before their big battle.

Striking out across the south of the area, Sarkast comes across a large number of tieflings and cultists camped out amidst the southern district. They appear to be guarding a couple of warehouses full of military supplies that looks like it was captured by crusaders. Continuing on to the bridge that spans the riverbed, Sarkast is able to get a good sense of its tactical use. If the army could secure this bridge, their mobility will be severely increased. Otherwise the army would have to scale the sides of the riverbank to enter the northern half of the city.

Anevia returns to report a large amount of schir demons which hold a warehouse district in the northeast called Paradise hill. She reports many prisoners are being held, who could be useful if freed. Continuing on, she spots several catapults on the watch towers around drezen which could be catastrophic to the army unless disabled. She reports

Aron heads out across the ruins and to the cemetery. He reports back that it is crawling with undead who seem to be roaming freely around the place, and there is a large, strange-looking vault that gives of a great sense of palpable evil.

The citadel itself appears to be crawling with cultists, dretches, and tieflings.

Back at the camp, Nilus takes a moment to step before the assembled paladins, giving a stirring speech about what the army is fighting for, and the glory of their purpose. Despite the hard march of the day, his words ring true and he seems to have had a great influence on morale. Ayesha, meanwhile, successfully manages to save several supplies from being destroyed by insects and is pleased to discover that very little food has been used to date. The army could siege for a while if necessary.

With the scouts returned, and Ayesha done her quartermaster duties, everybody settles down to meet while Aron stands and starts discussing strategy.

Map is updated.

Clasping his hands behind him, the raspy-voiced young man starts speaking slowly and with gravity.

"Our goal here is of course to take the citadel, and we have two options. The first is to simply strike directly for the citadel. Drive a nail into Staunton Vhane's heart and be done with it. Option two is to take the city first. I recommend the latter option, but this is your army, commanders."

Aron spreads out his map and starts poking at it.

"There are three significant armies within city. In the northeast here at Paradise Hill, in the south at Southwatch, and in the west in the cemetery. Not only do we save ourselves great pain if we clean up behind ourselves, but they have significant value. Sarkast spotted a lot of supplies at Southwatch, and Anevia many prisoners that could join our cause at Paradise Hill. The undead I scouted out are a random element who could be quite dangerous. I firmly believe they need to be wiped out as well."

He then points at three more spots.

"And in the meantime, there are three areas of tactical importance. Commanders, I'd humbly suggest that since you are not experts in warfare, Irabeth and I handle the armies while you deal with these specialist missions. The first is to take the bridge, the second is to sabotage the catapults, and the third is to investigate this strange vault I found in the cemetery. If we can clear out all six targets, the citadel will be cut off, ripe for the taking."

Map is updated with a map of Drezen and notes on the six points.

He steps back, folding his arms.

"Thoughts?"

Nilus nods at Aron and turns to Irabeth Commander. Which of the targets would you attack first? And which could we assist with to aid you in our common cause?

Dejik peers at the map as Aron explains their options, frowning as she listens to the description of the prisoners. I have three questions, Aron.

First, is there any way to get to the watchtowers without crossing the Ahari bridge? Or do you think we'd have to take the bridge first, then move on to the watchtowers?

Second, do you think the undead will be able to impact the attack on the city? If they are isolated in the cemetery, we might be able to deal with them last.

Third, I don't like the idea of leaving the prisoners under the watch of those schir demons: is there any chance the fiends might start killing their prisoners at the first sign of trouble? As a healer, my instinct is to rescue the prisoners first, but I don't know if that's the best strategic move. And could we even get to them without facing the tiefling army first?

Regardless of Aron's answers, Dejik will defer to Irabeth for the actual decision. She just wants to understand the situation.

"The riverbed can be climbed, but with the horses it is particularly difficult. I'd only like to do it once."

She looks over the map.

"I would attack Paradise Hill first, scaling the side of the basin. Free the prisoners. If there are good people suffering at the hands of those vile demons they must be our first priority. We can then strike southwards using the east bridge, and carry on to the cemetery. In the meantime, our crack team could handle the bridge and the watch towers."

"It looks to me like taking the bridge should be the first priority for the tactical raiding team." Ayesha stumbled over that pretty name for her band of merry troublemakers. "That would allow the army to quickly free the prisoners and augment our strength, while forcing the cultists to either attack across the held bridge, or try their luck at the embankments themselves. I think we have more than enough supplies to absorb the prisoners without needing those that are currently in the cultists' hands. "
