Your majesty, like the others, I am surprised to discover that there is no one better suited to this task. But I trust your judgment, and if there were anyone better suited, you would be talking to them instead of us.

Dejik turns to the others. When I was still a scout and messenger, the commanders reviewed my reports and devised a strategy, then write up orders and have me deliver them to the squad leaders. She looks back at the queen. I assume that's the next step.

Super busy over the last couple of days, sorry for not posting

With a bit of shocked look, Ronan looks around. "Your Majesty, We will do our best in what ever task you need us to do, Jinxx and I are at your command."'Yes, Jinxx I think she likes you too."

Nilus nods in appreciation of the vote of confidence.

We will fulfill this Holy Quest your Majesty, I too believe that we were all chosen.

Galfrey nods as the group replies. "I should specify - I only require a single commander for the army. You presence is a motivating one, and your powers are of great use for more specific situations. I recommend that you choose one of yourselves as the sole commander, or someone you have worked with and trust. When I delegate, I mean it truly. The army is yours, but the command of the army should be given to one who is most capable. I know this is the correct course."

She raises a finger. "This plan is a risk, but it is a worthy one. The demons will not expect, and may not even notice it, what with their attentions focused on the southern border. If you can secure Drezen quickly enough to find the Sword of Valor, it should do most of the work keeping the place safe once you've reactivated it."

She folds her hands and she looks from person to person. "No questions, truly? You know all there is to know of the Sword of Light, Drezen, its denizens, the people I send with you?"

Sarkast seems surprised by the Queen's last question. "I would not have presumed to interrogate the Queen. I expected that you would have advisors or scholars to provide the background we require. But since you ask, we would be grateful for any and all information you can provide. I have not heard of the sword and know very little about the city you send us to."

Ronan speaks up"Your Majesty, we do not know a lot of the Sword of Valor. Any information about it you can tell us would of course be most helpful. As for a leader may I suggest Nilus or Irabeth of Iomedae, they are both great Paladins and I for one would follow either."

Your majesty, may we have copies of your most recent scouting reports? Maps, terrain hazards, last known numbers and locations of the demon hosts--anything would be helpful. And we should meet with the officers: my commanders would not send troops into battle without knowing their strengths and weaknesses--

Dejik pauses and turns to Irabeth. I'm sorry, Irabeth, I'm speaking out of turn. And I'm sure I've missed something.

Irabeth is not actually present.

She nods over at Sarkast. "In this case, questions are what I hope for and expect. I'm unaware of how much information you have about this going in."

Galfrey holds up a finger. "One. Despite the name, it's not a sword. It's a battle standard-an artifact once used by Iomedae herself during the Shining Crusade. The church loaned the banner to the First Mendevian Crusade and allowed it to hang in Drezen, where it bolstered crusader morale and, perhaps more importantly, warded against demonic attacks, deceptions, and even teleportation. It is a perfect defense against demons. It is located somewhere within the Citadel Drezen. At one point it was held within a special vault, but our divinations have revealed only that it is in the Citadel. The Sword of Valor, by design, is hard to pinpoint. We assume it is kept as a trophy."

A second slender finger arises. "Two. Drezen was built during the First Mendevian Crusade as a strategic foothold inside the World wound. Dwarves chiseled it from of a rocky hill near the source of the Sellen River. It held for well over a decade, withstanding almost constant war before a traitor turned the Sword of Valor over to the demons. We never found out who it was, but with the Sword ofValor's protection gone, the demons took Drezen in a night. It has been in their clutches for decades."

And finally a third. "Three, your army will be one hundred crusaders; devout paladins of Iomedae. A small, but elite force. I feel it will allow you to move without attracting attention. You will also be accompanied by three specialists, chosen by me personally. Aron Kir is a cleric of Shelyn, an excellent healer with a deep knowledge of demons and their tactics. Sosiel Vaenic is an expert on siege tactics, traps, infiltration, and scouting. He will have the maps you want. And lastly there's Nurah Dendiwhar, she'll support you with bardic magic and is an expert on the region. She knows more about Drezen than anyone I know."

.

Next scene will be up this evening.

After hearing no further response, Galfrey nods once and stands.

"Then please, come with me. A ceremony has been arranged for you while we have met. I understand you are not accustomed to leading armies. Rest assured, I expect there will be one leader for this army. But you are blessed by Iomedae and the decisions must be yours. Choose a leader from amongst yourselves or your friends. Follow me."

With that she turns, and leads the group through Defender's Heart, and back to the dusty square in front of it. There, the remnants of the crusade as well as a variety of important-looking people in military regalia, officers and senior clerics, are assembled in a crowd. They break into applause as you step out behind the Queen. Anevia hoots and hollers from the side before being elbowed by Irabeth.

As the group travels through town, Sarkast is clearly uncomfortable at the attention. He quietly speaks to the others.

"I suggest that the leader should be one trained as a paladin already, so that it is someone the army will be prepared to respect and listen to. Nilus or Dejik, or perhaps Irabeth if she is coming as well?"

As Galfrey strides out she looks to Sarkast.

"As you are in charge, you bring who you wish. This mission is of utmost importance and provided you keep the army small, bring whichever specialists you wish. Irabeth would be an excellent commander if that is your desire."

Now outside, Queen Galfrey steps to the side and the five of you are lined up with Jinxx sitting beside Ronan.

"Loyal citizens of Kenabres, crusaders, and valiant servants of the Inheritor. We are here today to recognize our brave heroes for their great personal sacrifices for this city." She draws her longsword and turns to the group.

She turns to the group. "Kneel before the Gods and your Queen. Ronan Black, Nilus Romani, Ayesha Jalal, Dejik, and Sarkast. I dub thee the Knights of the Fifth Crusade!"

A thunderous cheer arises from the crowd as she taps you on the shoulder with her sword. "Arise Sir Black, Sir Romani, Dame Jalal, Dame Dejik, and Sir Sarkast!"

Female Magus 12 | AC 26 T 16 F 21| HP 102| F +9 R +9 W +8 | Init +11 | Perc +18

Feeling foolish, and not a little embarrassed, Ayesha knelt with the others to receive her knighthood. She was a little nervous about the implications of the thing - was she now beholden to Galfrey as personal monarch, and not just as the ruler of the area she was passing through? - but excited as well.

At the call to rise, she did, a flush suffusing her face.

.

A thunderous cacaphony sounds up from the crowd as paladins beat the flats of their swords against their shields and the survivors of the destruction of Kenabres cheer and whistle at the embarrassed party.

Ronan, feeling a little uncomfortable with all that has happened, does his best to look the part that has fallen to him.

With the party knighted, Queen Galfrey turns to a paige, who hands her a wooden box. She opens it to reveal several ornate military medals.

"Finally, for your individual actions in combat to this date, I am delighted to award all of you with righteous medals. These symbols are for the greatest of crusaders, they are blessed with divine power, and they will aid you."

She steps over to Sarkast.

"Sir Sarkast, for your stout heart, determination, and courage I award you the medal of vigor. You have taken mighty blows from the most terrible of foes yet stand before us this day, a testament to the strength of the Kellid people."

A red hexagonal symbol bearing a white castle is affixed to Sarkast's chest.

"Dame Dejik, for your intelligence, kind heart, and devotion to the Light of the Sword, I award you the medal of clarity. The information gathered has perhaps turned the tide of this war, and your devotion is peerless."

A blue symbol bearing white eyes is affixed to Dejik's chest.

"Dame Jalal, Sir Black, and Sir Sarkast once more! For your speed in battle, having felled powerful demons with precise and grace, I award you the medal of agility."

All three receive a triangular medal of a demon's face ringed with swords.

"Sir Romani, I have two medals for you as well. For delivering the death blow to demons of great power, you receive the medal of valor. And for perhaps the greatest act, for convincing the tiefling Arenius to throw down the hatred of the Worldwound and take up the shining sword of the crusade, I award you the medal of command."

Nilus receives a medal of crossed swords over a shield, and another of swords sticking out of a demon's skull.

She then leans in. "I won't make you give a speech," and then winks before turning to the crowd.

"The Knights of the Fifth Crusade!" Another thunderous cheer goes up, and the crowd is given the sign to be dismissed.

"My gentle men and women, you have your mission, and a reward I am certain none of you asked for. I will now retire. The specialists assigned to your mission will be awaiting for you in the war room."

With that she turns, and leaves you outside. A few people come up to congratulate you, but soon the roar of the crowd and the incredible attention paid to you has abated for now.

The medals have yet more buffs! I will explain in the discussion thread.

Inside Defender's Heart, Irabeth greets you all with a clap on the sohulder. The half-orc looks relieved for the ceremony to be over.

"I am so sorry you had to bear through that. Queen Galfrey loves pomp and ceremony to bolster morale, but it's misery for those who have to endure it. Let me grab some drinks and we can meet Galfrey's specialists in the war room. I got the impression you were interested in having me along on this mission. I await your orders!" Irabeth grins and moves to the bar of Defender's Heart to get some drinks.

The large table within the war room of Defender's Heart now has three people seated at it who all stand as you enter. A tiny halfling woman steps forwards and bows with a flourish.

"I'm not sure how to address several knights at once, so uh, hello! I am Nurah Dendiwhar! If you want anything known about Drezen, I'm your woman."

A soft-spoken man bearing the symbol of Shelyn on his armour steps forwards, he smiles at Nilus. "Sosiel Vaenic, of Shelyn. Sir Romani, it is my honour to serve alongside the Knight of the Rose. I have been assigned as the chief medic for your army."

And finally a hollow-eyed young man. "Aron Kir, I specialize in subterfuge and siege tactics." He seems shy and nervous, and does not say much.

Ayesha looked at the three and smiled. "First, you can address me as Ayesha. It has been good enough for me these past years, and it shall continue to serve. As for Drezen, why don't you start with the current estimate of demonic forces there, all known entrances, and the best place to eat. As for healing," she indicated Sarkast, "Sir Sarkast seems to need it more than the rest of us." This last was said with a grin.

As the group goes to meet the advisors, Sarkast says to Irabeth, "We're actually hoping for more than just your company. You have lived here in Kenabres and worked as a defender of Mendev for some time. We think the paladins might appreciate having a commander who is ... one of them? We think of you as our peer, and want you to lead, not follow."

. . .

Responding to Ayesha's comment, Sarkast smiles back and says, "While I do take my share of wounds, I am grateful to Dejik for keeping me up and moving. She deserves the credit for my recovery more than I ... if it were my choice, she would get this medal instead of me. All I did was keep putting myself where I could get hit!"

He adds, "Olen todella kiitollinen on tavannut sinua."

Maps will have to be up tomorrow night, sorry!

Aron stands. Despite being quite young his voice is quite hoarse and his manner is matter of fact and cold. He spreads out a map of this section of Mendev on the table. A few pleasantries are exchanged until Aron loudly clears his throat.

"On my advice the Queen has recommended the following approach to Drezen. I'm going to assume you don't know the terrain around here very well, apologies if I'm a little too basic." He taps his finger on a river leading northwards from Kenabres.

"This is the Sellen River, it passes alongside Kenabres and then travels north, parallel to the border of the Worldwound. I recommend we travel along it via the eastern shore; the terrain is difficult on the western shore and if we were ambushed it would be suicide. Travelling northwards we veer from the river to the town of Valas' Gift."

His slender finger draws a line northwards. "We then cross the river at Vilareth Ford. This is the northernmost crossing point on the West Sellen. It's guarded by a small contingent of crusaders and so we should have safety and welcome there."

Aron lets out a long breath, and then places his hand along a river drawn on the map. "This is not a river, this is a dry riverbed that was once the Ahari, which is a good natural trail. We'll be in the Worldwound at that point, and can continue to Drezen. Does this make sense? "

Dejik studies the medal, seemingly amused. A medal of clarity, marked with an eye...that's ironic on several levels.

She listens to Aron's briefing, then leans forward to get a closer look at the map. How many days travel would you estimate? And if the Ahari makes a natural trail, do you think the demons would guard it more closely?

She turns to Nurah. And anything you can tell us about the general dangers of the Worldwound would help--I've heard just being in the area can be deadly, even if we somehow avoid any demons.

Male Kellid Rogue (Unch) 11 / Urban Bloodrager 1 / Trickster 5| AC 29(32 w/Cmb Exp) T 18 F 22 | HP 122/122 | F +7 R +14 W +5 | Init +11 | Perc +21

Sarkast studies the maps, memorizing the route and matching its features up to what he knows of the area. Take 10 for 18 Knowledge (geography) and 22 Survival.

He points to Vilareth Ford. "When was your last contact with the crusaders here? Are we certain they have survived the recent assaults?"

Female Magus 12 | AC 26 T 16 F 21| HP 102| F +9 R +9 W +8 | Init +11 | Perc +18

Ayesha also studies the maps, then listened to what Sarkast was saying regarding the carefully planned route. It seemed to her that a force of several hundred paladins should be able to handle any "lightly defended" garrison, but perhaps that term was more flexible to others.

Nurah stands on her chair to better speak with the group. She has a high-pitched, musical voice and speaks a little too quickly.

"I'm so pleased to meet you. I understand a couple of you dance; I'm a musician and aside from what I know about the history and terrain I'm sure we can do some wonders for troop morale. Anyways it's kind of hard to say at this point because we don't know how devastating the destruction of the wardstone shard was to the demons."

She draws a finger along the Ahari riverbed. "This is obviously a dangerous area and we're sort of skirting the border of the Worldwound. But we have two hundred paladins with us. The Queen was smart, this army is too big for a couple of dretches to want to tangle with, and too small to really raise an alarm or draw attention. Your journey should take four to five days if we aren't distracted. 160 miles in total."

Sosiel cuts in at that point. The cleric is tall, handsome, and with a commanding presence to him. His beautiful armour is immaculately polished and is well-decorated and Sosiel himself looks to have put a lot of care into his appearance. He has the only properly close shave you've seen since the fall of Kenabres.

"We must also think of the dreary things in life, commanders. The army must be fed. Unfortunately we do not have anyone with a great mind for logistics with us, and so if you know of anybody who counts his or her coppers with the same care parents take in counting their children, please let me know. The army can carry enough food to last us five and a half days, which gives us a day's buffer. Drezen should have plenty of supplies, but it does mean that a protracted siege becomes difficult."

He then turns to Sarkast.

"Our last communication from Vilareth Ford was this morning. With the demons having fled we don't expect any forces large enough to take the Ford."

Female Magus 12 | AC 26 T 16 F 21| HP 102| F +9 R +9 W +8 | Init +11 | Perc +18

"Well, I did grow up as a merchant's daughter. Ayesha slapped Nilus gently on the arm. "I doubt any force in this world could cause you to give offense, Nilus. Really, all of you, it's just a part of my life. Still, it's not a topic of interest here in this place. Please, carry on with your planning."

Nurah smiles at Ayesha. "A difficult story, Da-- I mean, Ayesha. The hardships you've endured give me even greater faith in our mission."

The little halfling woman passes her arm around the room. "Now, one other problem. This is it. You have us, and a bunch of paladins, mostly of Iomedae."

Aron cuts in. "I can't think of any better core troops to have in a fight than paladins, but there's still an army to run. Ayesha's mind for logistics is going to help a great deal. If you have any friends, allies, or others with talents of any kind, try to get them to come along. What we lack is variety. That said, I think we can begin our march in the next day or two. Last thing we need is a bunch of bored crusaders."

Female Magus 12 | AC 26 T 16 F 21| HP 102| F +9 R +9 W +8 | Init +11 | Perc +18

"Friends or allies? Hmmm...I almost hate to mention this, but what about a blind elven mage-historian? Aravashnial, though extremely eccentric, is well known in this place for his magical skills. He was blinded when the city fell, but managed to keep up as we fought our way to the surface, and his advice and help in planning was very valuable when we took the garrison. I had hoped to be able to find a way to cure his blindness, but we haven't run across anything yet that could do so."

Irabeth, having been quiet for the time being, speaks up.

"We don't get Quednys, but Aravashnial is a good idea, even if he's blinded. That man gets right up my arse but he knows more about demons than anyone else int he city. Let me see if he's here. His expertise would be invaluable."

She stands and clanks her out of the room. Sosiel opens his mouth to speak, but Irabeth returns with both Aravashnial and Anevia in tow. Although Aravashnial's wounds have healed over in this time his face is still a mass of scarring.

"Thank you Anevia," he mentions as he walks in.

"Sirs and Dames is it now? Well it's well-earned, congratulations. I'm glad that my contributions paid off."

He is eased into a chair and sets his staff to the side.

"Irabeth made it short, but I get the impression you'd like my considerable expertise as you now have an army, and a mission to retake Drezen. Fine. I have a price for risking my neck. Cure my blindness. Find somebody who can cast regeneration in this blasted town and we'll talk! Aravashnial is one of the few remaining Rift Wardens, a valuable ally in this struggle, and a friend. Like me, he was blinded in the initial assault on Kenabres, but the damage to his eyes was far greater, and our limited resources have not been able to help. Restoring his sight will greatly improve his ability to help in the future, but more importantly, it's the best way for us to thank him for the invaluable help he's already given.

Aid Nilus' Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
+2 to Nilus on the diplomacy check

Galfrey looks sternly at Nilus and Dejik but seems somewhat swayed by their words.

"This is a difficult request, but Aravashnial's reputation precedes him and your argument is sound. I will do what I can."

With that, she turns on heel and leaves the room, striding swiftly away. The smile on Aravashnial's face almost lights up the room.
