Sorry for the inactivity. Still waiting on actions from Jinxx, Ronan, and Bellis.
Dejik's arrow shallowly damages the howler. Nilus hustles closer but does not get near enough to attack.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
Unfortunately the howler notices Sarkast as he creeps around a rock, waiting for an opportunity to throw a spear.
So that's Ronan, Jinxx, and Bellis who are up! As mentioned before the map is updated.
GM SpiderBeard |
Jinxx and Ronan both advance towards the howler while Bellis raises her voice in song.
The howler roars, moving in on Nilus and attacking. However, the paladin spins his glaive, keeping the creature back!

INspire courage is active, +1 to hit and damage. Everyone is up! Remember the squares in the rubble are difficult terrain. One square = 10' movement and no five foot steps.

Sweet Jesus.
Before anyone else can even react, Nilus roars a battle cry and slams his glaive down. The brutality of his attack elicits a gasp of shock from Anevia as the howler is instantly killed in a spray of demonic gore. The incessant, horrible howling stops, and beautiful silence is once more heard in Kenabres.
For most. Sarkast and Jinxx are faced with an incessant ringing in their ears, almost like the howler's cry. Distracting and irritating, it makes it hard to concentrate and think straight.
End of Combat
Sarkast and Jinxx are under the effects of the howler's howl. From Ayesha's knowledge planes check, they will suffer wisdom damage once per hour until a successful save is made. This is a curse effect.
Sarkast |
Sarkast comes around the rock, shaking his head. He witnesses the demolished body of the demon, and mutters in Dejik's direction, "Muistuta minua ei saada huono puoli!"
He listens as Ayesha explains about the howler's curse. "Well, for now I can survive. If it becomes more incessant, we may have to search for a surviving temple to see if the curse can be lifted. In the meantime, let us continue on our way."
He recovers his pack, and resumes tracking the group's way through the ruins of the city.
Nilus Romani |
Such a creature deserves only a swift end. The world is better with its ending Nilus says as he cleans his weapon. Then he turns to follow Sarkast
Dejik |
Dejik blinks, and is once again grateful that her vision is only shades of gray. Truly, Nilus, your goddess guides your hand. Is anyone hurt, besides the howl?
Dejik retrieves her arrow from the demon puddle and purifies the carcass, just in case the nearby people need a safe food source. (Not tasty, but safe, at least.)
If possible, Dejik will walk beside Sarkast and Jinxx, repeatedly asking Iomedae to help them.
As the group walks, Dejik tries to cast Guidance on Sarkast and Jinxx once per minute. Since she doesn't know exactly when they will have to save next, she'll try to keep it active as much as possible. If she can't get both of them without slowing the group down, she focus on Sarkast.
GM SpiderBeard |
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Make a will save, +1 from Dejik's guidance spell.
The group make their way northwards through the rubble, picking over the bodies of residents and demons alike. Eventually, everyone comes to face a massive rift in the group. It is around 15' across, and it is hard to tell how deep it goes. It rips through the city from east to west, circumventing it may take quite a while.
Sarkast |
Will save: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 = 24
Sarkast looks over the rift. "I myself can clear that with little difficulty, but this is my specialty. I wonder if we might be able to rig up a few ropes into a bridge that would carry the rest of you?"
The scout looks for a likely place on both sides to secure ropes.
Sarkast can clear the rift taking 10 for Acrobatics. He carries 50' of silk rope. I'm thinking if we have sufficient rope of rigging up three lines, one to walk on and the other two to hold with hands, then as each person goes to cross, secure them to one of the ropes with a loop in case they slip. Would that work? Sarkast also has a 10' folding pole that can be extended to assist with balance as well.
Dejik |
Dejik pulls out her grappling arrow and rope. I can see across it--where do you want me to attach it?
Is there anything high enough on our side to create a zip-line-type setup? Attach rope high on our side and low on the far side, then rig up a harness to slide across with.
GM SpiderBeard |
The ringing in Sarkast's ears ceases. He looks over both side and can find ruined buildings with very heavy stone rubble that should be sufficient for the ropes.
Yeah, since the rift shot through a crowded area there's enough on either side rubble-wise to support the ropes.
Ronan Black |
"Jinxx will jump across. With the help of the rope I can make it I'm sure. Rigging a sling for Anevia is our best bet to get her across."
Jinxx takes 10 for a total of 15 to jump across
GM SpiderBeard |
The ringing in Jinxx's ears ceases and he easily leaps across the gorge, the mighty beast clearing the air with no effort at all.
Nilus Romani |
Nilus will attempt to get across the easiest way possible, since his climb modifier is like -6
Ayesha Jalal |
"In the desert, we used to use a two-rope slackline setup to traverse canyons. you shuffle across the lower rope while holding on to the upper for support. Practically anyone can make it across that way, and Sarkast and Jinxx cand set the ropes up on the far side. I'll stay here and jump across, myself."
In the past I have described this setup and had GM-fiat it as a DC5 acrobatics or climb check. It is quite simply the easiest way to ford a river or cross a chasm is you can safely get one person and two ropes to the other side. Because you have handlines as well as foot lines, you can either support with your hands and move using your feet, or vice versa. We used to use this rig all the time when I was a kid.
Ayesha helped set up the slacklines and then stood ready to assist the others. Once everyone was across, she took one of the rope ends in her hands, asked Sarkast and the others to be ready to pull her up is she missed the jump, and took a running leap.
acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
GM SpiderBeard |
Graceful in all things she does, Ayesha springs across the rift.
WHEEEEEEEEEEEE
Ahem. That Nilus fellow is proving himself to be a valiant ally. You may consider bestowing Radiance upon him. It is a mighty weapon but I am loathe to share my person with another.
I know exactly what you're speaking of. This would be a good setup. It would not work for Anevia though since you'd need both legs to traverse.
Sarkast |
Yeah, that's basically what Dejik and I were going for ... but for Anevia we need to rig up a sling and pull her across. What kind of skill check would you want for setting up something like that?
Ayesha Jalal |
"Not a spell, Anevia, but I can rig a sling for you."
After everyone else had gone across, Ayesha used one of the ropes to make a sling for Anevia. It took a few moments to get is at least somewhat comfortable for the woman, but eventually they got there. Then, she tossed the spare end of the rope to Sarkast. A few moments' pulling was all it took to get the woman to the far side of the chasm before Ayesha made the leap herself.
Radiance? Is that the name of the other sword? The one we found underground? I agree that he would be a good choice.
GM SpiderBeard |
Okay, I'm going to say that climb is the skill needed to rig up this sort of system so will have Sarkast roll climb and Ayesha aid another.
Yes, it won't tell me much more than its name. I think it may be stupid. But it has great potential.
Ayesha manages to rig up a sling for Anevia. The rogue looks very nervous but settles into the sling. Over top of the ground, she sits heavily in the sling, and after it doesn't break she is carefully brought across the rift.
Sarkast's Climb Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Ayesha Aid Another: 1d20 ⇒ 2
With some adjustments, the sling is set up to work properly, and the entire group is successfully brought over. Upright and smiling, Anevia hugs Ayesha and starts limping off southwards eagerly.
"My house is not too far from here!"
Anevia Tira-blade |
The group continue on northwards, and thankfully as they get away from the rift the destruction seems to have abated. Bodies are still seen littering the streets but things are quiet. After another hour of walking, Anevia lets out a shout of joy. She points down to show a little brick house on the left side of the road which appears to still be standing.
"Oh thank the gods my house is still upright. Hopefully Irabeth is there or left a note or something." She starts limping forwards in earnest.
Nilus Romani |
Allow me to escort you there Madame. Nilus says as he hustles to catch up with Anevia.
Sarkast |
After getting everyone across and recovering the ropes, Sarkast resumes his place scouting while the party traveled. Once Anevia points out her home, he says, "Have a care, we have encountered many dangers ... do not run forward into another in your haste to find your wife."
Spear in hand, he steps up and checks the perimeter of the area, looking for signs of danger.
Continuing to Take 10 on perception, looking for ambush, traps, or natural dangers of any kind.
Bellis Eisen |
Bellis grins with joy at Anevia's reaction and keeps up with her and Nilus, eager to see how things are going. "I do so love a happy reunion! Please, Shelyn, let this work out, just one bit of good news in this city!"
Anevia Tira-blade |
Oh for the love of God I made a map and then realised there was one int he book.
Anevia nods enthusiastically at Bellis and the group make their way to the door with Sarkast in the lead. Sarkast carefully listens at the front door, but hears nothing. Anevia frowns as she sees the door to the house is unlocked, but pushes in nonetheless.
"Ira? Ira are you here?!" shouts Anevia into the house. No answer comes.
"Well, that's neither good nor bad..." says Anevia as she looks around the place.
GM SpiderBeard |
As Anevia looks around, suddenly a fire beetle appears out of thin air and attacks her! The create latches itself onto her leg, biting viciously and eliciting a scream of surprise and pain.

Bellis takes 5 damage. Jinxx is up!
GM SpiderBeard |
Jinxx leaps on the fire beetle, and noisily crunches it. It vanishes as it is killed. Anevia winces at the inflamed wound.
"What the hell is going on?!"
A second fire beetle appears after the first! It leaps at Anevia. This one scores again, drawing a louder scream from the rogue. Snarling, she whips out a short swrod and stabs down.

Nilus moves to assist, attempting to see what is going on. He will open the door for Sarkast

GM SpiderBeard |
Dejik's arrow strikes true, instantly killing the bettle. It vanishes as Ayesha darts in to open the door. A half-orc wielding a ranseur lies in the bedroom. His eyes widen and he snarls.
"Anevia! Say your prayers, your wife will find your corpse in bed waiting for her!"
Anevia spies the half-orc through the door.
"Who the hell are you?!"
Enraged by her response, the half-orc shouts back, "MY NAME IS VAGORG! Your b*&+~ of a wife locked me in jail and you will be my revenge!"
I'm just going to keep the round going. So everyone but Dejik has an action! Opening the door was a free action for Ayesha since was already ajar.
Sarkast |
Sarkast darts in, getting between Bellis and the half-orc. "Stand down or be killed where you stand!"
Acrobatics past Bellis to avoid AoO, moving 15'. Then ready an attack if the half-orc starts a hostile action. Also, once I am in place, I should provide cover for Ayesha to move inside the ranseur's reach and join me.
Acrobatics vs CMD: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
GM SpiderBeard |
Sarkast flips into the room, easily avoiding the reach of the half-orc's ranseur. He snarls at Sarkast, still casting yet another spell.
It's another summon monster spell.
