Zoresk looks after the fallen man, mouth thinned into a line. "It seems likely that this was simply the final act of a man gone mad, but is there a chance this was a murder?" Surprised by the woman's sudden approach, he listens silently, eying Irina curiously. He shrugs and tails along with Nilan, weapon still in hand.

With the group confused as to what just happened, they make their way after Nalla and into a small house. It's pleasantly, if sparsely appointed. Nalla moves in and collapses on a chair, shaking her head.

"Close the door please. I'm sorry. It's late. I... I can't grieve for him in public."

She takes a moment and composes herself as the last of the group filter in.

"My name is Nalla, I handle the accounts for the town. My husband is mayor now, was deputy mayor. This... this is not a good place. Derevin had been running this town for years, his predecessor, who the hobgoblins killed was a dim-witted thug. His death now places the town in the hands of a far more devious man. The six of you were showered with riches for what you did, but there is so much more that was just kept by Derevin. He may be richer than that snake Silversleeves now."

Nalla keeps her eyes averted from Nilan while she speaks.

"Jerend was.. my solace from these people. We had been seeing each other for a year. Forgive me in my shame, father. Jerend was upset for a month before his disappearance. He was very ah... stoic, reserved. Good man. He'd gained a temper and looked hunted, like he never slept. This got worse and worse until I heard he got into a fight, but nobody would tell me anything. Then he vanished. I know it's dangerous out there but Jerend was so careful."

Clearing her throat, she looks up at each of you.

"I don't know what you need. I just know you're good people in a bad place. But I have money. I have connections. I have... please - tell me what you need and I'll arrange it. I just need somebody to find out what happened to the only good thing in this rotten town."


Nilan looks disturbed by this revelation

So, You believe that your husband may be to blame for Jerend's fate?

Nella looks at Nilan helplessly.

"I don't know. Maybe. I'm... cautious of making that kind of accusation. I just know that something happened to him."

Sorry I have been absent, lots more family drama and hospitals and sickness. But I am back and should be on a consistent schedule.

Irina listens intently, By the time I found my friends the day had worn thin, I was meaning to approach them the next morning when my attention was diverted. I cannot begin to describe the sorrow I feel that we found your...ah companion in this manner and I am sincerely sorry that my mind wandered away from our conversation but I know that I will for sure follow up as best I can to discover what has happened here. If my friends choose to aid me, all the better...

Irina frowns worriedly rubbing her hands as ponders the next move and shaking her head to herself that she had been so careless...

UGH! I knew I forgot something. Dammit, well character development for Irina I guess?


Should we speak with the Mayor? Perhaps the direct approach is best? Nilan offers, he is no investigator he is a mere tender of souls and watcher of Fate.

Fingers eyes the lady Nalla with a skeptical eye, trying to discern the truth of her statements. He's seen his share of liars and lunatics in his day, and wonders if this lady is either one or both.

No... I recommend caution. Let's ask what other villagers think of the situation first, our spiral should lead us slowly but inexorably close to the truth..."

She then realizes how she's spoken and offered and blushes, bowing: "That is but a suggestion!"

"I think Kumyo has the right of it. Any man made mayor is going to be well liked in the local community and we can't afford to be making accusations and alienating people. If Jerend came out of the east road, there might be something in the woods worth investigating. If we can find someone who's more of a woodsmen then I am, it might be best if we go take a look at the trail before it's gone." He pauses and glances at Nella before continuing hesitantly, "I mind keeps running over the holes he had in the side of his head. They looked like something that were done to him. Might be worth doing some research to see what might have causes those."

The group watches her carefully. Nalla seems to be either the most gifted liar Fingers has ever seen, or she's telling the truth to an extent it makes her very uncomfortable.

Her eyes widen and she quickly shakes her head. "No you can't just walk up and accuse him! I could be in great danger and I don't know if he did it for sure, I'm just sure he did. Jerend had many friends around town - I only saw him once every couple of weeks. Maybe somebody knew what had happened to him before he left?"

Fingers, believing the ladies tale, now tries to sort out what it means for he and his allies, and for Nalla herself.

"Do you think Deverin knew about you and Jerend? Anything that leads you to believe that? Or do you think he unfortunate accident is nothing more than mere coincidence?"

"Second, do you know where Jerend lived, especially his camp or cabin in the woods? There may be clues at this home that leads us to know more about what caused his madness."

"Third, what can you tell us about Jerend in general? Was he prone to erratic behavior? Did he have other enemies? Is there anything important we need to know about his past or situation?"

Trying to keep herself busy, Nalla fills a kettle from a bucket of water and sets it by the hearth. She then produces some tea leaves that look expensive and imported.

"I... I don't know. Derevin never mentioned it to me or behaved any differently. The only reason I don't think it was an accident was Jerend's behaviour before he left. Something was bothering him."

She spoons in a few tea leaves.

"Jerend lived in a cabin in the woods. I've been there once but we usually met in town," she looks away as she speaks, watching the kettle. "I can draw a map. And he was a very stable, good man. Well-liked in town. He would occasionally get obsessed with certain ideas, particularly creatures to hunt. So his behaviour was risky but.. predictable?"

While she does, so Fingers looks round the place for any hint of where all this ill-gotten treasure might be stashed.

Nalla spots Fingers looking around the area.

"This is a guest home as we hadn't the room on our grounds. Not much to see here. Our proper home is in the south of town." She moves to a desk in an adjacent room and returns with some paper and a quill. She carefully writes out a map of the area, simple but skillfully drawn. The cabin is a short distance to the southeast of the town.

"It's probably a half day's walk, by a creek. There's a large trail marked by a boulder on the Caliphas road. Take that and it should lead you to the creek. Once you're at the creek, walk upstream. You'll see it then."

She looks at the rest of you.

"Is there... anything else you needed to know?"

Fingers looks to the others for guidance. "Is this the place to go first? Seems the best lead we have at present unless someone knows more they're not telling...

If they agree, he goes to grab his pack and makes ready to set out or the dead man's cabin.


"It looks so. It might provide hints for our subtle interrogation of the town..."

"I think that might be best." Looking aside at the woman, Zoresk leans closer and whispers to his companions, "If Nalla was seen speaking to us, I wonder if she might be in danger. Do we need to see her guarded or hidden?"

Nalla nods wearily over to Irina as she hands the map over.

"I have no reason to believe anybody suspects anything. I just have my suspicions and my need to know what happened to my dear. May She walk with you."

Taking the map, the group head out of the Douleurs southwards. Having been woken up at an unfortunately early hour it is just the crack of dawn by the time they get out of Douleurs. The trip towards the cabin is largely uneventful. The mountain scenery of the area remains spectacular and the woods that cover the low foothills relatively pleasant. Eventually, the boulder pointed out by Dalla is sighted and the group turns off onto a narrow but well-worn trail. Another hour's worth of walking leads them to a creek, and then eventually they what must be Jerend's home.

The small log cabin is built just twenty feet from the creek bed, the creek itself being small, shallow, and stony. A small clearing for the cabin has been cut, and an enormous pile of wood, somewhat decayed, rests against the cabin. It appears to be locked and shuttered.

Perception DC 20:

You hear a strange grinding sound coming from the wood pile, and spot a large shadow jutting out from it.

"What a wonderful area!" Kumyo's cheeks have taken a rosy hue from the travel, and Kurohyo's pelt has a faint sheen of sweat. Otherwise they look quite pleased.

Zoresk eyes the cabin warily, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, but still feeling uneasy given the circumstances. Resting with hands on hips, Zoresk enjoys the sunlight (a rarity in the cold north) and asks, speaking softly, "Shall we continue then? I suppose none of us thought to ask for a key... myself included."

Fingers looks at the cabin wondering why in the world someone would choose to live out here among the wild beasts, when there were some many interesting sights and sounds in the city.

His reverie is disrupted as he hears a grinding sound coming from the woodpile. "Ho there mates! Somet'ing is movin' 'round in tha' pile. Stand back! Check it out!" he calls to the others.

As the group makes their way to the front door there's a sudden rumbling and they all become aware of a loud chewing noise. Suddenly, the log pile beside them flies in all directions, spraying wood and some sort of nasty paste all over the area! Hidden beneath the log pile, having been eating its weight in wood is the largest beetle any of you have ever seen. It lunges at you to attack and using its enormous size, bowls over four of the group!

Trample: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Nilus, Zoresk, Kumyo, and Irina are trampled and take 12 damage! You can choose to make an attack of opportunity at a -4 to hit, or make a DC 16 reflect save for half damage.

Knowledge Nature DC 14:

This enormous beetle is a stag beetle, which is a known danger for loggers due to its appetite for decaying wood. It is likely behaving defensively.

Yelling in alarm and pain as the beetle tramples him, Zoresk's honed combat reflexives serve him well as swings his glaive in a vicious arc at the beetle. As the creature passes him by, he pivots and drives his blade into the distracted creature's back. "The creature is a stag beetle. It feeds on decaying wood and is likely only trying to drive us away from the cabin."

Acting on instinct IRina rolls away from the creature as best she can...

...but finds herself unable to scrabble out of the way as the creature tramples her.

Wheeling with the blow the young Chelaxian lets out a yell as she throws a powerful but ugly kick...

Sorry guys! Didn't get to a computer yesterday until I was at a state where I Could be declared physically dead.

As the stag beetle races over the group Zoresk slams his glaive into the creature, which bears down heavily allow him to pierce the hard carapace and do brutal damage. It finishes trampling the group and immediately is counter-attacked, but only Zoresk manages to score a hit.

The beetle appears near-death, but the mindless creature simply keeps attacking and attempts to pincer Zoresk. Its enormous mandibles bite down hard on the warrior, lifting him from the ground briefly before he fights it off!

Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 Damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 1) + 8 = 10

ZOresk takes 10 damage! Everyone is up.

Fingers shifts over 5' to get behind the beetle once more and attacks with his shortsword, striking deep into the insectile enemy.

Zoresk yells wordlessly in pain as the beetle picks him up in its crushing mandibles. As he feels his ribs creak, he wedges his glaive's haft between the beasts pincers and leverages them open. Dropping to the ground, he spins his glaive into a cleaving blow, snarling, "Bastard bug!"

Noticing the bug's critical state, Kumyo holds while Kurohyo keeps growling, biting and slashing.

Fingers manages to flip out from under the beetle and land on top of it. He slams down his short sword before rolling off. Taking advantage of the wound, Zoresk swings down his weapon, and the beetle's legs go out from under it and it collapses to the ground, twitching violently.

Then he channels to heal his allies once they have moved a distance from the Beetle.

Kumyo nods in gratitude at Fingers and Zoresk, then turns sharply to face her companion. With a soft caring hand, she guides the feline to the carcass, letting it smell it and get somewhat more comfortable with it. Kurohyo smells curiously at it then, seemingly satisfied, laps some of the beetle's juices.
