"Hmph. And what's keepin' the folk from just inventin' somethin' for the money? Throwin' in a few good phrases?"

Bofur seems to warm to the topic. "Mr Overlord, sir, our researchers have examined the blog in detail and determined that it is merely an atmospheric anomaly caused by Triaxus discharge interminglin' with the energies emanatin' from the Cyphergate. It poses no risk to Riddleport whatsoever, we can assure you. Now, as to the reward..."

"I imagine the overlord would have some way of discerning truth from lies when it comes to that." Fiona shrugs. "Magic, natural talent, or what have you."

.

As the group stand back, talking quietly to themselves Variel spots the half-orc try to palm a card. However, this time, he is caught.

"Yer done, friend," says a particularly brutal-looking dwarf who is missing most of his nose. The short bouncer grabs the back of the half-orc's chair, tipping it back and slamming it to the ground. He then steps on the half-orc and fetches a card from his sleeve.

"Cheaters go in the harbor." The half-orc loudly begins to protest and then several others in the cards area stand up, apparently coming to the half-orcs defense.

At least ten more guards leave their posts to make their way over to the cards section of the casino floor as it looks like a very large fight is about to break out.

Fiona's eyes light up and she gets a big grin on her face. "Oh, this ought to be good..."

She leans forward, watching the spectacle unfold with great interest.

.

Weapons are drawn all over the place as the guards set themselves for a big melee. However, one of them, a beefy-looking human woman covered in tattoos, raises a hand, chants a spell, and the belligerent patrons (and a few bystanders) fall asleep.

"Right, in the harbour boys!"

The remaining belligerents are quickly overwhelmed, and a series of around a dozen people are marched straight out of the door of the casino, their chips left on the table for the nearest person to grab.

Once outside, the snoring fighters are hauled to the end of a pier, given a heave ho, and tossed into the disgusting, heavily polluted harbour. All of them wake up instantly. Half of the casino piles out to look at the display.

Most of the patrons and guards at the casino are distracted if you want to get up to anything. Otherwise, let me know what your next plans are!

I can't think of anything illicit I want to do.

"Well, that was entertaining. And a good idea. We should let Saul know about that method of handling unruly guests and see if he wants to hire himself a sorcerer."

Variel finishes his drink, and as he returns the glass, he asks, "So who's the woman with the spell? I want to make sure never to get on her bad side."

"I don't get it. There are three casinos here already up and runnin', efficiently by the looks of things, plus Clegg's entertainment venue also up and runnin'. I thought we'd find some pretty easy ways to take these others down a peg or two, but they seem to be operatin' lucratively and well. So, why would Saul open yet another casino in Riddleport? Is he just trying to tick someone off? And why did the Overlord let him?"

Fiona stretches. "I suspect we'll find out soon enough... for now, I think we've seen all we need to see today--we've got some good ideas for things to do at the Gold Goblin. Come."

She starts walking out of the casino to return to the Gold Goblin. "Let's go."

Everybody files in and a few scavengers flee from the tables where they were snatching up chips. Soon the casino is back in full force and the drinks start pouring and the games begin again in earnest.

"Oh, yes. Quite." Fiona turns to Bofur. "We've seen how effective having a sorcerer on staff can be for dealing with unruly patrons, we've seen how effective drinks & distracting sights can be on getting more people to play, and we even have an understanding of how some of the 'fancier' gambling halls here work." If it wasn't clear, that was addressed to a random employee when Variel returned his glass.

.

Ahhh!

Variel stops one of the waitresses.

"That there's Bad Meg, keeps folks in line but gives me the creeps! All that finger wiggling. Stay on her good side, mind. She and the owner keep fightin' and someday someone is gonna get turned into a turnip!"

The group finally depart the Dragon's Hoard and make their way over to the last of the big three casinos in the area. The House of Nabin has a beautiful front entrance with a large staircase leading up to what appear to be heavily decorated marble columns. The sounds of music reach your ears as you approach, and as you step through you are greeted by a packed gambling hall with at least a dozen different entertainers. Some bawdy songs are being played by a troupe near the entrance while tumblers flip and roll on a raised stage in the centre of the room.

As you begin to step in, a brawny human woman holds out a hand.

"Gotta buy in to step in. One silver's worth of chips minimum," she says in a deep, hoarse voice.

Variel gives the woman a silver and looks around. "Well, this is certainly a lively place!"

As Bofur steps away, he says, "Take care, we probably won't be terribly long."

Take 10 requires a certain amount of concentration as it is meant to take the place of a roll. You can't simultaneously roll every skill you have. That said, I'll assume you make the appropriate checks at the appropriate places.

Tahbet strides in imposingly with the rest of the group, tossing a silver to the woman at the door. The expensive entry fee notwithstanding, this place seems to be a party in full swing. The games in the area are the ubiquitous dice and card games, as well as a few decent-looking roulette wheels. Several people at the bar are playing a game called Biribi, a Taldan diversion similar to roulette where those in the bar buy a token to back a certain number. A caller at the bar then randomly chooses a number, calling out the token for a fairly substantive return.

Variel keeps a keen eye out as the group walk through the pack casino floor. A tumbler rolls by while a jester apes the mannerisms of a half-orc losing badly at dice. The half-orc finally roars in disapproval and takes a swing at the jester who flips out of the way, and into the crowd, laughing.

The games seem on the up and up at first glance, although expensive to maintain. Variel and Fiona watch some of the tumblers for a moment, and then the con slowly becomes apparent. At least two of the tumblers are pick pockets, who have been targeting the drunkest patrons with a few too many chips, picking them up here and there with incredible dexterity.

That was the intent, sorry if that wasn't clear. I thought I'd speed things up by just stating "take 10" and giving you the numbers so you didn't have to click through to my character sheet to figure them out. :)

Variel watches, occasionally putting a copper on a roll of dice or spin of a wheel. As he catches on to what is going on, he nods. Not how I would run things, but if people aren't watching their purses, it really is on them.

He keeps a close eye on the performers moving through the crowd, making sure they don't get too close to him or his companions as they make their way around.

.

Know anyone who wants in on a Second Darkness game? :D

Variel makes his way through the jubilant crowd and notices something unexpected, the tumblers are working over the staff as well as the patrons. Tips from waitresses are vanishing and it appears this may not be a typical night out for the House of Nabin.

Bofur wanders in circles around the three establishments as if lost in thought. In fact, he checks for back and side doors and notes windows large enough to enter on the ground floor. If there are large windows on the second floor, he considers scaling options: horizontal timbers, crumbling plaster, ornamentation. He also considers how well lit the areas are and where an uninvited guest might be spotted from. Lastly, he looks around for 'law enforcement', which he expects is probably the Overlord's own thugs in a town as rotten as Riddleport.

I'm pretty sure that is more than enough to read Bofur's inner dialogue in my next to last post.

.

Bofur:

Leaving Variel and Fiona to flirt while Tahbet impassively watches over everything, you take a good walk around this district. Rather than typical town guards, you quickly learn that Riddleport has its own mercenary army, a sort of military police called the gendarmes who are personally paid by Overlord Cromarcky and exist predominantly to put down riots and keep competition from getting too powerful. They are notoriously corrupt and bribes are expected for almost any basic activity. However, their brutality keeps the city safer than it has ever been.

This particular part of Riddleport is in the extreme northwest and is a broad, sandy plain against the harbour. It's almost on the opposite side of the city from the Gold Goblin. It is strictly an entertainment district as a variety of street vendors sell food of questionable quality while the requisite drug dealers and prostitutes ply their trade wherever their is open space.

As you do a walk around the House of Nabin, you spy a strange sight in the back. A couple of costumed entertainers are seated and going through a pile of various valuables. One gendarme stands guard as they sort the valuables into bags. A small boat is beached nearby, ready to leave at a moment's notice. Somebody who looks to be dressed in a waiter's uniform for the casino lies in a pool of blood against the back of the building.

Variel and Fiona watch the tumblers work the crowd with some fascination, always keeping far enough away and looking wary enough that nobody attempts to bother them. Thanks to the one silver cover, nobody seems to care that they're not drinking or gaming. After a little while, they begin to spot the system. Items are picked from the customers and staff, and passed over to a musician who then passes them over to a bus boy who seems in on the con. The bus boy then disappears into a back door. The drunken frivolity of the place seems to have prevented the staff, or anyone from spotting the elaborate ploy that's going on.

"We've been found boys! Out of here! And those two ratted us out!" cries the tumbler as bouncers around the area draw clubs. The tumbler points at the two of you and around a dozen nasty-looking carnies get ready to fight their way out!

I'm not starting an initiative roll yet as you can choose how you respond to this situation. The carnies are thugging up who they can on the way out to the back door and a couple seem keen on going for you.

Bofur:

Knowing when to leave well enough alone, you make your way away. As you begin to move, you hear shouts and the sound of combat coming from within the same casino, which Variel and Fiona are in.

GM/Variel:
Fiona's mood takes a turn for the worse. As it turns out, Variel was right--the staff were in on the con.

"I see you've decided to do something about it. I didn't think tshamek would be stupid enough to try attacking in broad daylight." She hefts her earthbreaker to her shoulder. "Tahbet!" She calls out for her bodyguard.

.

Fiona: I think I didn't write it clearly. The staff were not in on the con. There's a big melee about to break out between the entertainers and staff, and the entertainers are pissed off at you and Variel for ratting them out.

Mutt:

I'm hitting fast-forward on how you got from your background to this scene, hope you don't mind!

Being from Kaer Maga, the legendary lawlessness and chaos of Riddleport was a little underwhelming. Sure, there's piracy, violence, drugs, and prostitution, but the brutal military force of the gendarmes keeps it from getting too exciting. The matter of work was not too difficult. The buzz of the city was a reformed crime lord, Saul Vancaskerkin, hosted a massive gambling tournament that went bust after a failed heist attempt. Saul's staff walked off the spot, and now there's a need for everyone from cooks to bouncers. It seemed like a good place to start.

Finding your way onto a ferry and down the harbour, you made your way to the Gold Goblin, a gambling hall in the Wharf district. There, you walked in to see a variety of staff cleaning the place up under the orders of a soft-spoken dwarf who introduced himself as Larur Feldin. After a quick conversation about work, he said you can have a job, but that a big bastard you like can probably do more than just bounce. Larur explained that Saul hired on a few "partners" who fought off the failed heist, and that you may be able to join their number.

Giving you some quick directions, Larur asked that you go to the Free Coin District, a section of Riddleport noted for its splendid gambling halls and prime competition for the Gold Goblin. You should be able to find Saul's partners without issue - look for a gigantic Shoanti man with a dwarf, elf, and another Shaonti woman. Find them, and tell them to get their asses back here to help clean up for opening day.

Agreeing, you took the ferry back to the northwest of the city, pausing to see an insane sight as hundreds of seagulls crashed into the enormous arch over the city. Upon arrival, you were quickly drawn by a huge commotion at the House of Nabin. Poking your head in, you were rewarded with the sight of two Shoanti and an elf facing off what looked like a group of angry clowns. As you step in, a dwarf bursts in beside you, wielding a vicious-looking crossbow.

Bofur:

You race over to the front door of the House of Nabin, and burst in to spot a number of angry-looking performers about ready to rip apart Variel, Fiona, and Tahbet! A tough-looking Shoanti steps in alongside you.

Okay, we're all in the same spot now!

Tahbet stalks over to Variel and Fiona, pulling his earthbreaker from his back to face off with the angry carnies who are torn between getting revenge, and getting the hell out. Looking up, the group spies a powerfully-built Shoanti step in with a nasty greataxe strapped to his back, and Bofur step in beside him.

At that moment, the place breaks into a fight!

Carnies are the coloured circular tokens. Square tokens with grey border are bouncers. Everyone is up! Map is in the campaign description and here

At the door, Bofur sees the threatening stance adopted by the entertainers. He rapidly loads his heavy crossbow and points it at the crowd. He considers ordering the entertainers to lie flat on the ground, then realizes he actually came to disrupt the casino. He takes a deep breath and shouts,

"I don't know what made yers so unfriendly, but it stops 'ere. Take cover, players!"

He fires at the central chandelier, trying to bring it down and cause mayhem, or a least make some noise.

Round 1: Actions
Standard Action: Start Raging Song
Move Action: Move below bouncer before me

Fiona hefts her earthbreaker and steps forward. As she moves, she begins singing a song that gets her heart racing. If anyone else felt like listening, they'd find the song driving them to fight, harder than ever!

Raging Song Crunch:
Raging Song Specifics wrote:

If a raging song affects allies, when the skald begins a raging song and at the start of each ally's turn in which they can hear the raging song, the skald's allies must decide whether to accept or refuse its effects. This is not an action. Unconscious allies automatically accept the song. If accepted, the raging song's effects last for that ally's turn or until the song ends, whichever comes first.

At 1st level, affected allies gain a +2 morale bonus to Strength and Constitution and a +1 morale bonus on Will saving throws, but also take a –1 penalty to AC. While under the effects of inspired rage, allies other than the skald cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration. At 4th level and every 4 levels thereafter, the song's bonuses on Will saves increase by 1; the penalty to AC doesn't change. At 8th and 16th levels, the song's bonuses to Strength and Constitution increase by 2. (Unlike the barbarian's rage ability, those affected are not fatigued after the song ends.)

If an ally has her own rage class ability (such as barbarian's rage, bloodrager's bloodrage, or skald's inspired rage), she may use the Strength, Constitution, and Will saving throw bonuses, as well as AC penalties, based on her own ability and level instead of those from the skald (still suffering no fatigue afterward). However, inspired rage does not allow the ally to activate abilities dependent on other rage class abilities, such as rage powers, blood casting, or bloodrager bloodlines; the ally must activate her own rage class ability in order to use these features.

Sorry. I was at work. Also, Mutt is half-Varisian/half-Shoanti. It's why he got the name mutt.

The half-Varisian/half-Shoanti man frowns intensely at the sight of the seagulls crashing into the arch. He mutters, "Stupid birds..."

Mutt enters the House of Nabin to an odd sight. A bunch of crazy carnies attacking three of the people he was sent to find. 'Where's the dwarf?' On cue, the dwarf comes in, brandishing a crossbow. He fires at the chandelier. Mutt begins to pant and growl, knowing that this is a fight. He's about to give into his rage when he hears something. Music. Coming from the Shoanti woman. Her songs seems to have the same effect that his rage has on him. The only thing missing is the fatigue his body goes through.

Mutt will accept the song. He uses his bloodraging stats now.

He stares at her for a bit before staring out into the crowd. "Street performers.... I HATE STEET PERFORMERS! I WILL DESTROY YOU!" He then charges at one of the carnies, drawing his greataxe. He brings it down.

So Mutt will charge at the green carny (including drawing his greataxe). Charge gives Mutt +2 to attack roll and -2 to AC until the next turn. So his AC is currently 10.

Charging Attack w/Greataxe: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 2 = 26
Damage: 1d12 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
