Tahbet has a wide smug smile on his face when he speaks to the bouncer next to him: "You fought well, I'll fight alongside you again if the opportunity presents itself."

He takes up position behind Fiona, looking like her big mean shadow. He wears his victory smile proudly, all the while focusing the mage with his eyes. Tahbet doesn't really understand what Variel is saying, but he gets the general meaning of what's going on.

Tahbet respects the attackers that didn't turn and run, since this heist really was dangerous and they still tried it. So if anyone was to hurt the prisoners, he would step in and stop them. So if you plan something like that, give me a chance to intervene.

.

The man sighs miserably.

"We were hired by some guy on the wharves last month to knock over this tournament and grab the chest. Nobody said there'd be Shoanti bruisers here!" he complains.

"We were supposed to meet him on the docks later on tonight."

The capture thug just looks at you dully, and occasionally nods as the mage speaks.

Was that a mistake and you meant "her", for the one-eyed woman, or did he actually say "he", referring to someone we don't know about?

.

They were hired by an unnamed man who said he'd meet them on the docks after the job. This is not in reference to the one-eyed woman who was a part of the crew.

While Variel poses wise questions, Bofur pats the mage down for distasteful mage-y stuff, like polished sticks made of wood or bone, figurines, a coin purse and what-not.

"Sounds like in-fightin ta me. I heard Saulie used ta be a big shot among the town's underworld."

The mage sighs.

"Thulavia, my lover. We hired these fine fellows here on the promise from some guy at the docks. Glad to see she made it out. Is there anything else or can you let me suffer in peace?"

"I believe we can let you suffer in peace for the moment."

Variel looks to Fiona, Tahbet, and Bofur. "Shall we see what the proprietor wishes to say to us? Then he and the local authorities can determine their fate."

.

As you question the mage, it becomes apparent that much of the staff are not happy. As the crowd filter out afte rcashing in their chips, there are arguments and shouting from several of the waitresses.

"I can't be sure of my safetys here!" complains one as she rips off her horns. "The pay ain't worth it. I'm outta he'ah!"

The casino becomes a whirlwind of activity as staff storm off after the customers, and soon the casino is nearly empty except for the four of you, the two bouncers who were introduced as Hans and Beyar, and a dwarf working the cash cage. Hans and Beyar shout after the departing staff but then give up.

Hans and Beyar then make their way over to the downed mage as you wait for the gendarmes. Hans starts going through Angvar's pack, and setting out objects as the mage looks on dejectedly.

"So whatcha got here? Think you're so big and mighty..."

He dumps out the Angvar's pack and sorts out the following items.

- a wand
- a scroll
- a spellbook
- 33 gold worth of chips
- bracers

Hans looks over at the group. "Don't gimme that look. Once the gendarmes get him he'll be lucky if they don't steal his teeth. Youse folks want any of this? Your victory, your loot. I'm happy to take a finder's fee though."

Beyar stands behind Hans, and silently grins.

"I say we let them go. " Tahbet's words hang heavy in the air. "They didn't do too much and they can help us get who is behind it all. "

He pauses for a moment then addresses the Mage:"If we let you go, you would meet again with your lover. You would go to the meeting with the guy that hired you. We would follow and take him down. We hunt together, then part ways. "

He thinks for a moment. "your stuff should pay for the damage you caused and show your good will. What do you all think? "

Fiona scratches her head. "I'm not entirely convinced it's necessary--considering how badly the attempt went, this show of force might be enough to convince their contact to leave well enough alone."

And I fail to see how it'll get me any closer to learning of the Blot.

"But then again, it sounds like it could be fun. If you're insistent on this, I'll go with you."

Variel wrote:

Noticing how most of Saul's staff are quitting on him in the aftermath of the botched heist, Fiona takes note of Variel's words and nods. "Why not? At least there's drinks in it for us."

Variel sees Hans looking through the wizard's pack. "I would say his chips are certainly forfeit; the rest is probably a reasonable start at reparations, but since Saul is the wronged party here, I would say he should decide. I wouldn't mind being paid for my services, but won't stoop to looting the thief myself."

I believe I had already emptied the mage's pockets. See my post from 3/27 at 1:52 a.m., at least that's how it shows on my screen.

Addressing the two bouncers, Bofur asks them "So, Hans n Beyer was it? What keeps you two uglies here when the rest of the staff has followed the shiftin winds? You 'n Saul go way back?"

.

Hans nods once. "We stick to Saulie, he's been good to us. Loyalty ain't count for much in this town, but it does to us --- wait. Let 'em go?!"

The scroll and bracers are magical but Fiona is unable to identify them. The wand is a wand of shocking grasp with nine charges remaining.

Hans shakes his head. "Saulie ain't gonna like that. This guy gotta pay fer what he's done---"

Hans is interrupted as Saul walks up with the dwarf from the cash cage. Saul laughs at taps Hans on the shoulder with his giant key-hand. Despite his tournament being a complete bust, he is in very good spirits.

"Bah, let them go. Hired cronies for someone far more powerful. There are still a few people who refuse to believe I'm trying to go straight. Some mercy will help with that."

He points his key at Angvar and the other thug.

"Go on. Your goods are your forfeit for attacking my tournament, and a reward to my fine defenders here. That was excellent work; most excellent."

As Angvar and the thug run off, Saul leads the group to the northwest of the casino, and then up some stairs.

"Larur, get some wine please." The dwarf bows his head politely and takes off while Saul leads you to a lavishly furnished room with a roaring fire. The dwarf Larur returns quickly with a bottle of wine, which he uncorks.

Saul takes the glass of wine, and gestures with his giant key-hand as he speaks.

"Please, have a glass. Andoran - good stuff. Now, I am a man who likes to speak his mind and shall do so. If you were to inquire about me, you'd see that I was a former crime boss. A gang leader. It was a poor choice of industry. My foolishness and hubris cost me my health, my fortune, my family, and my hand."

He takes a sip of wine.

"My wife is dead. My sons are exiled. So I took what I had left, called in some favours, and bought this fine establishment. This was once one of the greatest gambling halls in Varisia, and I intend to restore it to its former glory."

Saul sighs dramatically.

"Unfortunately, although you can leave the world of crime, the world of crime does not always leave you. I assume that Clegg Zincher or some other foul bastard organized this hit on my tournament. I want to "go legit" as they say, but the shadow of retribution hangs over me. That mage - Angvar, is a leader of a small gang of toughs who work contracts. I've considered throwing myself at one of my old enemies and work for them in exchange for protection, but that would be a dishonour to my promise to go straight. So..."

He points at each one of you in turn.

"You fought with a fury and skill I do not see around here frequently. You comport yourselves with grace and intelligence, and frankly you're an intimidating bunch as well. Would you like to work for me, and help an old rogue go legit?"

Bofur is both surprised and a little unnerved by the casino owner's openness. It's the loyalty displayed by the two bouncers that offers him some reassurance. He sips his wine unaccustomedly and looks at the others for their reactions.

"I didn't 'xactly come to Riddleport to be someone's muscle. On the other hand, if'n the responsibilities aren't too time-consumin' I could pursue my other interests and the extra money wouldn't be unwelcome. Don't suppose you got a few rooms available here?"

Variel listens to Saul, and to Fiona's and Bofur's responses. He takes a light sip of the offered wine (mindful of the fact that he's been drinking whiskey up until now).

"I am here on business of my own, but part of my business is Calistria's. Seeing that a wronged person gets what is coming to them ... and that those responsible do as well ... those are part of my holy calling. If you wish me to assist in that, then I am willing to accept your offer of employment. As Fiona asked, did you have something specific in mind?"

Saul nods amiably.

"Well obviously your skills in a fight are of the greatest importance to me. However, if you are interested in more steady work I need people for... well, everything here. YOu of course would all get rooms - and board if we can find a cook. Some of the duties you could go for are running games, managing staff, 'spotting' whereby you stay on the catwalks or mingle in the crowd to spot cheaters, I have a kitchen that needs running - and so forth. The more you put in, the more we all get out, savvy? You think of how you can be of best use to the Gold Goblin, I trust you all to know yourselves well."

Saul finishes his glass.

"If you are interested, I will set you up with my man Larur who handles the day-to-day of the place. He can give you a tour. You've met Hans and Beyar, and you will likely run into Bojask as well who is my bodyguard when such is required."

Fiona considers Saul's offer for a bit, resting her head on her chin in thought.

Well, if nothing else, I'll have a place to stay for free while I try to find out more about the Blot...

She looks up at Saul and nods. "Very well--I suppose I can lend my singing voice to your job. I'd very much like to get acquainted with Larur."

"That sounds good Saul," Tahbet starts while raising the glass of wine he was offered.

Once he has the chance, he speaks to Saul: "I have a proposal. The first three guests each evening that are upset about losing, may challenge me to a fistfight, one-on-one, who wins gets half the money lost. If I win, the customer at least got to blow-off his steam and won't crush the tables and I earned my pay."

He thinks for a moment, then adds: "Also the other customers bet on the fight itself. So everybody wins, right?"

Tahbet has a broad smile on his face, thinking about all the honour and fame to be had here. I need to sharpen my skills and if we can't go after those thieves' boss, I need some other exercise, he thinks.

Saul slaps his hand on his leg and smiles.

"Excellent, then we have an accord. If you wish to inquire as to who hired Angvar then by all means. I will be pursuing these inquiries my own way. I'd put money on Clegg Zincher regardless, but one never knows which enemies may crop up. And consider their items to be yours, a reward for the good deed. In the future I will add danger pay to such situations."

He then grins over at Tahbet.

"Ahh, you will want to speak to Bojask then. Below the Gold Goblin is the Octahedron, a Riddleport fighting pit which Bjoask runs. So we already have a setup for this type of betting. I like your idea a great deal, Tahbet and will see that it is enacted. Now, if you will excuse me I must attend to some business. Larur will give you the tour. Please understand that some parts of the Goblin are off-limits; the interior of the vault and my own private chambers for obvious reasons."

He leans on his key-hand, standing up.

"Now if you will excuse me, I will leave you in the capable hands of Larur as I have business to attend to. A pleasure, all of you."

.

Saul leads you out of his chambers where Larur stands patiently. The dwarf is well-groomed with a steadfast expression on his face. He smiles widely as Saul explains the situation.

"Welcome and greetings! Glad to have some brain around here, m'name is Larur Feldin and I'm the manager of this here, eh, fine establishment."

Larur leads you all on a tour of the Gold Goblin, explaining things as he goes.

"This was once one of the greatest casinos in Varisia - but neglect, crime, more neglect, and a lot more crime has lead it to a shadow of its former self. It is our job to bring pride to this place, and integrity!"

He proceeds to show the group around the Gold Goblin; to the rooms in the east wing, the large kitchen, counting room, lounge, bar, and other basic functions. He then turns to all of you.

"Now, my job right now is to find some staff. If you folks want to help me out, see if you can do just that. You can also follow up on those folks what attacked the Goblin, although Saul said he was on that too. Or you can just kick up your feet and get a good night in. It'll be a week before we re-open."

Feel free to make any skill checks or state clever ideas to get people to work at the Gold Goblin. If you want to pursue any leads you may have on the attack on the tournament, let me know as well. Otherwise consider this downtime where youcan puruse personal interests, or just wait out the week until the Goblin opens for business.

"Thankin' ye for the tour, Larur. I suppose the obvious question is, what competition does the Golden Goblin have here in Riddleport? Are there other legal gamblin' spots? Underground ones? I'm thinkin' you also need some entertainment. I haven't heard our Shoanti here sing or play, but I suppose she's easy on the eyes if you're human. That might help."

"I've got a fair-ta-middlin' eye for spottin' cheaters, so I could place m'self above and watch but that don't bring in more players. Maybe some of the more charismatic sorts could spread the word?

Fiona looks around the Gold Goblin for an ideal place to sing from. "I happen to take pride in my singing, I'll have you know. Mr. Larur, is there a place for me where I can perform for the most people at once?"

Bofur turns and looks at the dais in the center of the room, whence he fired the deadly bolt at the mage. He points at it and states, "I'd say there's a good place to start! That way, no one can miss you, though tall as ye is, that's prolly not a problem ye have."

.

Larur nods amiably as he listens. When he responds his voice is dry and pleasant.

"Well for competition there's the Free Coin District on the other side of the city across the river, nothing really in this neck of the woods. In the Free Coin District you'll find the biggest game in town. The Dragon's Hoard, the Watercress, and the House of Nabin - all of them have a lot more money and prestige than this place. The Overlord runs those and the games are crooked as they get, but he advertises well.

"Clegg Zincher, the man we may think was responsible for knocking over the tournament, he runs a huge arena pretty close to the Goblin - so we're in competition with our arena and beast fights when we do those. As for underground gambling - it's everywhere. This is a pirate's town and they like their gambling. The hope is that there aren't any great halls in the Wharf District, it's a good opportunity if we can keep the damn staff long enough."

He then nods over to Fiona.

"A public performance would do well to get some customers. Frankly out on the docks works when the ships are coming in, folks will be in with money and an urge to spend it. Stay the hell away from Zincher's Arena though. You can also try the markets in Lubbertown, we'll get different clientele there and it's sort of a city-within-a-city... harder to piss off a crime lord there."

Bofur spends the rest of the evening getting to know the Golden Goblin, at least those parts he has access to. He determines how many doors go in and out (is there a staff entrance?). He asks to meet Bojask and take a look at the 'beasts' they have in stock. How well are they being taken care of? Are they usually killed? Where do they get them from? He isn't particularly interested in the most luxurious accommodation, but he has to have a window to the outdoors.

.

Warning, wall of text!

Larur looks over Variel and nods once.

"Done, you've got confidence and we need that for a pit boss. Make the games your own; don't let that ghoul head bite you though. Nasty business, but customers love it."

---

The group spends the following week trying to find customers and employees.

Fiona/Tahbet:

Fiona spends a good amount of time singing for sailors coming in and aside from any number of rude propositions she manages to get people interested in coming to the casino, and makes some coin as well.

With all the attention heaped on her, she also manages to get in several questions about the Blot. The first thing she discovers is that sailors love to call it Blakely's Shadow for reasons they can't quite articulate. It appeared around a month ago and has remained in the sky since. It also changes and has even disappeared on occasion, but always returns after a few hours.

Finally, the overlord is offering a 1000 gp reward to anyone who can determine what the Blot is, and if it is a threat to Riddleport. Nobody has determined anything of use.

Tahbet remains nearby to Fiona, sizing people up to see if they're worthy of work. With the ships coming in several sailors often find themselves immediately unemployed. He's able to find four strong women and men to come on as bouncers, and one cagey halfling who claims to be a great skiffs dealer.

Variel:

Variel heads out into the core of the city, hitting the markets and Lubbertown to see what he can find. He's able to find a surly dwarven cook, a mute Kellid who is willing to clean up, and a few good-looking waiters and waitresses. Thankfully with the chaotic wax and wane of work on the ships harbouring at Riddleport, it's easy to find people out of work.

Bofur:

Finally Bofur explores the Gold Goblin from top to bottom. He meets up with Bojask, a drunken lout of a man who manages the Octahedron and is none-too-happy about Bofur's presence but lets the dwarf in anyways. The Octahedron is a small underground arena that can hold around 30 spectators. Within several cages Bofur sees some pretty sorry-looking beasts: a few wolves and a bear who have obviously been badly treated by Bojask.

The only places Bofur is stopped from entering are Saul's private apartments upstairs and the cash cage.

Map of the mainfloor has been updated with descriptions for each area. Everybody has rooms in area 19. There is a top and bottom floor I'll upload in a bit. The top floor includes catwalks over top of the casino floor.

---

After a few days the group manage to meet up with Larur once more who has managed to hire croupiers, dealers, and some other staff. It's a skeleton crew, but enough to open up.

The Gold Goblin Staff:

Variel Duardlon Pit Boss
Bofur II Head Spotter
Fiona Sun-Touched Entertainment
Tahbet Earth Shaker Head Bouncer

Larur Feldin Floor manager
Bojask Octahedron manager
Lixy Parmenter Dealer, ghoulette
Beyar and Hans Guards, cash cage/vault

Included but not counted - waiters, bartenders, croupiers, counters, dealers, janitors, cooks, bouncers.

Larur looks over the couple dozen amassed people and slaps his hands together, beaming delightedly.

"Damn fine work you lot, damn fine work. Saulie will be pleased. All right folks, we open in two days. Fiona has already been doing some great advertising. I need everyone on hand to clean this dump up and get it sparkling for the opening."

Larur then tends to the four of you.

"Here's the system I've set up with Saul. Your base pay is 10 gold. With the disaster from the tournament we're at a loss right now, so I gotta reduce that. But if we make more money, you make more money - savvy?"

Larur hands you 8 gp each.

"So there's a start. You're already doing better work than most of the useless lubbers around here. Let's keep it up."

Turning a Profit:

Once a week, you can choose to make a skill check of your choice. This skill check will add a modifier to Saul's roll to turn a profit. You are free to make up clever ways to use skills. DC 15 is a +1, DC 20 is a +2. Here are some examples:

Bluff - Cajole people into visiting the Goblin. Repeated failures may harm its reputation.

Craft - Create eye-catching advertisements.

Diplomacy - Manage the help, greet customers. Alternately, convince people to come to the Goblin.

Intimidate - Bounce out troublemakers. Or you can threaten people at rival game halls!

Perform - Sing to entertain customers or attract new ones.

Profession (gambler) - Run games at the Goblin.

Perception - Spot cheaters.

Feel free to do anything else you need to. Next scene tomorrow. At this point, you have successfully identified the other items as a scroll of shrink item, and bracers +1. Everybody earns 8 gp.

Fiona pockets the money Larur offers. "My thanks, Larur."

Predictably, it was easy enough for Fiona to drum up interest in the Gold Goblin--a combination of her entrancing singing voice and exotic looks was enough to cause quite the stir among the sailors of Riddleport. Her coin purse was filled with tips (with more than a few sailors offering more for 'private performances' that she graciously turned down), and she even managed to learn more of the Blot while she was at it.

All in all, a productive week. Who knows--maybe they'll even come to gamble instead of ogle me. Admittedly, some of them were quite charming enough to look at… still, I need to keep focus. I still don't yet have a complete picture of what the Blot truly is.

She turns to the rest of the group, her coin purse jingling with new, well-earned gold. "Well, I think we can call this a productive week."

A thought crosses her mind, making her turn slightly pinkish. "I'm curious--are we going to have to wear some sort of uniform while we're working here?"

Variel grins and chuckles. "If you'd like, I'm sure we can find something suitable ... and I'm sure Saul has a few suggestions. But I suspect that for the level of talent you're bringing, you'll be fine in whatever you find comfortable."

Fiona arches an eyebrow at Variel. "Really."

She shrugs. "Well, I've never been one for shyness--we might as well see what sort of clothes will suit me the most."

Is there a costume room somewhere in the Gold Goblin?

'Yasraena Zauviir'|DR: 2/-|Spell Slots: 1st: 6/6; 2nd: 5/5; 3rd: 4/4|Performance Rounds: 27/28|Female Human (Shoanti) Skald 9|AC: 20/13/17 (19/12/16 in Raging Song)|HP: 67/67|Saves: Fort: +9, Ref: +6, Will: +8 (+11 in Raging Song) (+4 vs. Bardic Performance, Sonic, Language-Dependent, +1 vs Fear)|Init: +6|Perc: +14

Going off the assumption that there's a costume room...

Fiona wanders into one of the Gold Goblin's back rooms, where all the former staff costumes are kept. After making sure the door is shut tight, she looks around at the clothes before beginning to try on a few sets.
--------------------------------
Well, this 'succubus' costume is skimpier than I thought it was. And--by the spirits, how do tshamek even walk in these? I feel like I'm about to trip over myself with every step I take.

Fiona looks at herself critically in the mirror. The thigh-high leather boots appear to have been sized for a woman with smaller feet than hers--her toes feel crammed into the tips of the boots. Grimacing, she sits down and slips them off.

I'm not wearing this costume. Between the amount of skin shown and the ill-fitting boots, I'll be too distracted to perform properly.

She starts to change out of the succubus costume and starts looking through the other clothing sets. Well, the boots, at least, are going. The rest of the costume I think I can keep... She makes sure the false horns and tail are in place before looking for more comfortable footwear.
--------------------------------
When Fiona emerges from the back room with her hide armour bundled under her arm, she's wearing a 'succubus' costume from the 'Cheat the Devil' tournament--false horns, fake tail and skimpy attire. The major difference is her lack of thigh-high boots--she's opted to go barefoot.

"So, think I should stick with this or find something classier?" She asks, resting one hand on her hip.

It doesn't really reveal much more skin than what I wore for the Plummet.

As he's the only other dwarf who seems to be in Saul's employ at present, Bofur chats up Larur, offering to get to know each other over ale. He's curious how Larur knows Saul and what got him involved in this whole enterprise. He's respectful of the other man's position, however, and doesn't press for more than Larur is willing to share.

At one point, he walks past a door and sees Fiona dressed somewhat revealingly like a succubus. His heart races for the wrong reasons, but it only takes a moment to see that it's a costume similar the one the waitresses were wearing before storming out. He pities the human males who will be trying to concentrate while she performs. Shaking his head, he continues on his tour.

When they have some down time, Bofur asks the others if they'd be interested in scouting out the competition. Perhaps they'll be inspired by some ways to attract away some players.

.

Bofur finds Larur open to speak to and a gentle, no-nonsense sort of person. He originally worked at the gas forges, the source of most employment for water-averse dwarves in Riddleport. He goes on for a little while about carbauxine, the strange gas found in the Riddleport area that makes fire burn hotter than nearly anywhere else in Avistan. The powerful fire allows for forging the hardest of metals like adamantine. Work in the gas forges is a near-guarantee of dying young from black lung.

He fell in with Saul after Saul failed to set up a labour racket with the gas forges. But he found he liked Saul's intelligence and drive, and Saul saw far more than a labourer in Larur. Larur's natural head for numbers and patient disposition had him managing Saul's affairs and handling his books. He's been working for Saul for a couple of years, always a good distance from Saul's unsavory business. Larur credits himself with Saul's decision to go straight and the decision to buy the Gold Goblin. He admits he hasn't always trusted Saul, but Saul has always trusted him, and truly believes Saul has gone legit.

Hans whistles loudly from across the room and as Fiona emerges from storage dressed as a succubus she draws a couple of more catcalls from the staff.

Larur looks her up and down critically. "Not bad fer a human. I like y'without the boots. Makes ye look shorter."

Let me know if the group is going to follow Bofur's idea of checking out the competition. Otherwise we'll move to opening day after the long weekend.

Fiona gives Hans and the catcalling staff a sideways glance. "Well, evidently it's a popular costume choice here." She shrugs.

Larur wrote:
"Not bad fer a human. I like y'without the boots. Makes ye look shorter."

"Why, thank you, Mr. Larur." Fiona curtseys briefly. "Truth be told, the boots were too small for my feet."

--------------------
When Bofur brings up the idea of checking out the competition for ideas, Fiona nods. "I think that would be a good idea. Just let me get changed into my normal clothes."

She wanders back to her room to get changed into her hide armour before returning, earthbreaker and other weapons in tow.

When Fiona comes out to get opinions on the outfit, Variel comments, "While I think there are better themes to choose from, you will definitely turn heads, and turned heads often have loose coin belts."

----------------

"I think a nice stroll is in order. If it happens to take us near other establishments while we see the sights, who would I be to prevent it?"

A brief conversation with Larur gives the group the names of their most likely competition:

Larur's Note wrote:

Every two bit bar has gambling going on to some extent. You could knock over some tables or just do some advertising, but a lot of work for a small number of people. Clegg Zincher runs a massive arena pretty close to the Goblin, but he's dangerous and has it out for Saul. Be very careful if you case his part of town.

Across town to the northwest is the Free Coin District. There's around ten gambling halls there and three big ones - the Dragon's Hoard, the Watercress, and the House of Nabin. We're small potatoes to those three, but their games are rigged and ours aren't. Might be easy to drum up business.

Overlord Cromarcky basically owns that district and the gambling halls therein, but provided you don't attract too much attention he won't care. Got bigger fish to fry.

So you have the options of checking out smaller establishments, Zincher's arena, or one of the many casinos in the Free Coin District. Let me know where you'd like to go, and what you intend to do there.

Just posting to let you know I'm still reading. Though my creativity is at an all time low.
I guess taking a look at our main Competition wouldn't hurt. Just to get an impression of how high or low profile our own employer is in comparison.

Fiona starts heading out the door of the Gold Goblin. "I recommend we check the Free Coin District out--if this Clegg person really wants Saul out of the way, I doubt it'd be a good idea to just walk into his territory."
