Guten Tag, everypeoples.
I'm the aforementioned friend of Barvo, currently posting with my standard Paizo account. I'll make up an alt once I get a character decided.
I won't toot my own horn, as Barvo seems to have done that already. I will say this will be my first PbP, so I'm a little uncertain as to the norms, customs, and other such involved. Be gentle as I figure out my way around here.
To reiterate what I've been told, we've got a skald, inquisitor, bloodrager, and ranger. I'm the sort that likes to fill in gaps in a party, so I'll ask first if there's any particular roles (Classical or Forge Of Combat) people think need filling.
Some concepts I've got bouncing in my head right now:
- Elven wizard with a focus on illusion magic. Thespian.
- Halfling paladin. Little man with big, boisterous heart.
- Human (Half-elf?) Cavalier. Noble and honourable, but not polite.
I'm also interested in trying out a Slayer, Brawler, or Witch.
So, any thoughts?
Fiona Sun-Touched |
Oh, don't worry, sir--we'll be gentle with you. ;)
In all seriousness, our party is doing well in terms of fighting ability--the ranger is focused on using the crossbow, the bloodrager is our melee workhorse, our inquisitor packs a whip for reach attacks, and the skald (me) serves as a supporting melee attacker with some arcane magic thrown in.
Personally, I feel that we could benefit the most from either a mage or a cleric. What do the rest of you think?
Bofur II |
I love your halfling paladin idea. As long as he isn't too squeamish, 'cause we gots us some ragey peoples.
And I wouldn't skimp on the Wisdom and Sense Motive; I'm starting to think you just can't trust people here in Riddleport. Is it just me? It's me, isn't it?...
And no worries about being the newbie. I haven't mastered it either. There can be a fine balance between playing your character and encouraging more interaction, unless your character is the engaging type already.
GM SpiderBeard |
Hey Trigger! I'll send you a pm with some links to guides on PbP posting, how it works around here, and all that other instructional stuff.
In short, you're working for a casino in Riddleport in Varisia. This AP allows for more questionable morals than others, so provided you work with group cohesion in mind you'll do well. A paladin will have to do some mental gymnastics to justify everything, but can certainly work.
I think the thespian wizard is a good fit thematically and balance-wise, but the group can handle pretty much any character and I can change the universe to suit the group's balance.
GM SpiderBeard |
Sent you all the stuff. OH. Also, game map is done in google maps. I am very liberal with how I do the maps in that I load a map, a few tokens, cover up the unexplored parts, and trust everyone not to peek. It's worked out so far. Everyone moves their own tokens. You can see the current map at the top of the page.

Thinking about it, I believe I will go with a witch. I haven't played a witch yet, and I've been meaning to try one out.
Beyond that, I've got two concepts to go with. One would be a human witch of simple origins. I've been having a fondness for heroes who start out from the common folk. The other idea would be a halfling. (I also have a fondness for halflings, for much of the same reason. Little men trying to make their way in a big world.) And Barvo knows what to expect when I say he'd be a Chubtoe.
Probably leaning towards the first idea, but I'm still open for votes. I'll work on my character tomorrow, tonight being my meatspace game.

Hey, Trigger! Good to have you aboard. Don't worry about being nervous. We'll help you out.
As for classes, here's my thoughts:
Elf wizard - would fill up a role. Would be interested in seeing how the 'thespian' angle can be done as a wizard.
Halfling paladin - not a bad choice. Again, we're dealing with questionable morals. But it can be pulled off.
Cavalier - cavaliers are awesome. You can do so much with the right build. I also have a feeling that the cavalier's impoliteness might cause him and Mutt to butt heads. :)
Cleric - again, this would fill in a role of the party. But, that's your choice. I'd personally recommend either Desna (because Travel domain is awesome [particularly the Exploration subdominan]) or Nivi Rhombodazzle (for a more roguish cleric). Both provide the Luck domains and are both goddesses of gambling/luck.
Slayer - I haven't really experimented with the slayer. But I have heard it said that the slayer can fit well as either/both an assassin type rogue or as a frontline fighter.
Brawler - brawlers are cool. Mutt was originally supposed to be a brawler/bloodrager that could pull off martial arts while raging and flying.
Witch - I'm actually playing a witch with the hedge witch archetype in a Wrath of the Righteous. I have him as a healer/buffer/debuffer. It's turning out really well.
EDIT: I like the ideas you have for the witch.

On an unrelated note, I've bought Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition off of Steam for my laptop.
Loving it. :D
Fiona Sun-Touched |
Anyway, just waiting on our GM now. :)
Thaddeus Claville |
There we go, Thaddeus is statted up. Still have some tweaking to do, notably a status line and purchasing some equipment, but at least I have enough to give a thorough review. As for now, I have an early shift tomorrow, so I have to go to bed. I'll finish it up tomorrow after work.
Thaddeus Claville |
Ah, dangit, I keep forgetting to post as Thaddeus, and posted with my main profile. And somehow I missed it this time around before the edit timer expired.
Fiona Sun-Touched |
Is it wrong of me that I'm imagining Thaddeus speaking with the voice of the Engineer from Team Fortress 2?
"Mutt" |
Heh. I now imagine that, too.
Now I have to do this: "For instance, how am Ah gonna stop some big mean sum'a b*tch from tearin' me an unsound an' unneeded behind? Th' answer: Use magic. An' if tha' don' work? Use mor' magic. An' mah hexes. An' Ol' Horn. We may not be th' toughest. Bu' we ar' th' smartest. We can outwit any sword any day, lad."
Sorry, Thaddeus. Just way too much fun.
EDIT: That attack is for if we decide to attack now. If not, then disregard it. It all hinges on what the others want to do.
"Mutt" |
That's one bad guy down. You can say this about Mutt, he knows how to make an entrance. That's twice I started out cleaving a guy in half.
Thaddeus Claville |
Is it wrong of me that I'm imagining Thaddeus speaking with the voice of the Engineer from Team Fortress 2?
It wasn't who I was intenting, but who am I to say it's wrong? Imagine it however you want.
And, really, it may be a good model to imagine a country voice belonging to an intelligent individual.
"Look, buddy. Ah'm a spellcaster. That means I solve problems. Not problems like 'Is Negative Energy evil' 'Cause that would fall within the purviews of yer conundrums of philosophy. Ah solve practical problems!
Fer instance... How am I gonna stop some big mean unholy abomination from tearing mah soul out through my spleen? The answer? Cast a spell. And if that don't work... Cast more spells.
Like this reflex-targeting stat-damaging lil' ol number researched by me... Cast by me... And you best hope... not targeted at you."
Continues to play the pan pipes.
"Mutt" |
Very nice and cool, Thaddeus. A lot better than what I came up with.
You know, a part of me wants Mutt to take in the dog as a pet.
Thaddeus Claville |
Well, that stinks.
Apparently that recent update of the Paizo servers that prevents older web browsers from working has hit my smartphone, which was the way I was going to keep a regular posting schedule.
It's weird, it doesn't stop me from going to individual topics. What it does do is stop me from going to the main Message Board page (That is, this page) and replying to topics. I can read what's going on, but can't make a post until I get home.
I can still commit to a post a day. Just was hoping I'd have more of the day to do it in.
Fiona Sun-Touched |
Have you updated your smartphone's browser? I think that'll solve the problem.
Thaddeus Claville |
I can't seem to find a way to do it manually. I was under the assumption the browser updates automatically. Also, my phone is a Galaxy S3, so it isn't top of the line.
GM SpiderBeard |
Get wayfinder! It's a good app that directly connects to the paizo boards and has shortcuts for the bbcode.
Fiona Sun-Touched |
Anyone feel bad about one-shotting that thug now? I kinda am...
Poor doggy.
Thaddeus Claville |
Can't seem to find Wayfinder. Noting in the Google Play store, and searching for it on my desktop reveals a link, but clicking it leads to a blank page.
GM SpiderBeard |
Weird, was a bit of a trick to find.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arcanosoft.wayfinder
"Mutt" |
Do we post in order of initiative?
Also, would this be a good time for Mutt to do lethal damage or should we still try to take them alive?
GM SpiderBeard |
The initiative works in 'blocks' whereby if the order was this:
Good guy 1
good guy 2
good guy 3
---
Bad guy 1
---
Good guy 4
---
Bad guy 2
---
Good guy 5
Good guys 1-3 can post in whatever order they want. Good guy 4 can't go until the bad guy posts. And good guy 5 has to wait until everyone before him has posted. In this case, you're good guy 5.
You'll have to wait a bit but I'll try to be as responsive as I can to move combat along. I will always say who has the next action. In this case, only Bofur can go. You of course can use free actions to talk and emote and so forth.
Fiona Sun-Touched |
Is there a sign that there are more thugs coming from downstairs?
"Mutt" |
I love how everyone refers to Mutt as a Shoanti when he's a shoanti/varisian mix. I'm just passing it off as his shoanti traits more noticeable than his varisian traits. :)
Variel Duardlon |
Eh, you're all "human" as far as Variel is concerned. He's not racist, but he has spent most of his rather long life in Kyonin. ;-)
Fiona Sun-Touched |
So before I start up my Raging Song, who wants to accept it? I know Mutt's willing to take it, but what about Bofur & Variel?
Variel Duardlon |
Since you can choose round by round, any round I don't intend to cast a spell I will probably accept it.
Thaddeus Claville |
Thanks for hunting it down, Spiderbeard, but that link still doesn't work for me, on my phone, tablet, or desktop.
I think I found the App on another site. Haven't tried it out just yet, though.
Bofur II |
We're talking about inspired rage, right? I don't know the skald very well and I was thinking raging song is like bardic music... it's the umbrella term for the class ability and you choose the effect.
I would use it as long as I'm wielding my battleaxe.
GM SpiderBeard |
Sorry guys, had to march in a parade and then play two gigs yesterday. Had no time to update. On it now!
Fiona Sun-Touched |
We may need to invest in some heavier armour for Mutt at some point...
And speaking of Mutt, I think you actually have 9/15 HP from your bloodrage.
"Mutt" |
Well, mutt can only equip up to medium armies and not get a spell failure chance. Also, I didn't want to gain an armor penalty on my skills.
Thank you for the clarification on the up, Fiona.
Variel Duardlon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Well, mutt can only equip up to medium armies
OK, that's a hilarious autocorrect fail. I now have an image of Mutt with a miniaturized army hanging off him, parrying blows. ;-)
