Arval Beyondane |
Arval let's him be shuffled into place by the little halfling.

He glances at his surroundings but sees nothing to gain somewhat of an advantage.

Bah! Server ate my post.
Hearing the howling, Whiskeyjack immediately reached out and cast a spell among the group. A nimbus of blue-white energy surrounded everyone with divine protection.
Casting communal prot evil. Everyone has protection from evil for umm...I minute. On second thought, let's hold that spell until the werewolf pack gets here. I'd hate to waste it on traveling

"Oh, I have just the thing up my sleeve to make them howl! They won't like this one bit!" Wren crows, reaching up her sleeve...to pull out a...FEATHER!!! It's a nice green feather. Good shape, but still just a feather.
What else did you expect, really?
GM SpiderBeard |
Whiskeyjack blesses the group while Eldon starts his babbling. Three enormous shapes move out of the forest; gigantic werewolves in hybrid form wielding greatswords. As you make eye contact they let out another howl before attacking! These enormous creatures must be of the Vollensag tribe.

Kawrock casts more fire at a werewolf, and Whiskeyjack wade sup to break some faces. His swing bounces off of the werewolf's tough hide.
The two werewolves not in pits roar as they leap at Whiskeyjack and Arval, attacking the two of them viciously. Arval blocks a reverberating blow with his shield, but then is bowled to the gruond by a werewolf which lands a vicious bite on his shoulder, crunching through the armour. Whiskeyjack manages to block the attack.
The werewolf at the base of the pit starts scrabbling up the walls, snarling all the while.
A volley of arrows flies from Duristan and his men, thudding into the easternmost werewolf. Clawing at the air, it collapses to the ground in front of Arval. Wren and Lena then follow up, blasting the other werewolf with magic. It also falls, a smouldering ruin of a beast that slowly returns to its human form.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Arval sheaths his sword and grabs the shovel strapped to his pack with his other hand. He starts digging up dirt and throwing it into the pit.
"I will try and bury him alive."
He says as he throws a shovel full of dirt on the werewolf.
Still having no ranged weapon I thought this the best solution to my current predicament...
Eldon Appleton |
Priceless! xD
Eldon frowns at Arval, then shrugs and moves aside.
"The honor's yours, Duristan," he says, motioning at the pit with the werewolf.
GM SpiderBeard |

Arval digs up a nice sized rock and throws ir over the edge, he grins when he hears the rock hit something on the way down. He digs up more dirt and throws it over the edge, pelting the werewolf with small rocks and dirt.
Eldon Appleton |
"You're doing fine, now finish it," Eldon comments as he watches the others.
GM SpiderBeard |
I'm going to be merciful and not spend a week on this.
Duristan and his archers rush to the side of the pit as the werewolf constantly tries to climb up. With Arval shovelling rocks on the werewolf and a hail of silver arrows, it finally dies after prolonged suffering.
End of Combat
Dursistan rushes over to Arval, drawing his bow and pointing an arrow at him.
"I saw you get bit! You're a werewolf now and we'll have to put you down!"
Arval Beyondane |
Arval's eyes narrow on the man.
"You asking for a shovel in the face?"
He raises the shovel in both hands, ready to smak the man on the head.
"Lower the bow. I am no werewolf and if I were I would not support them either way."

Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren waits for the results of Kawrock's ministrations, wondering if she needs to incinerate Arval where he stands or whether she needs to wait until the next full moon.
"Hurry up now, Dearie...don't want his fleas to spread if he has them," Wren says, hoping Duristan will lower the bow before he gets brained.
GM SpiderBeard |
As werewolves are not quite the forest creatures Kawrock is familiar with, they are beyond Kawrock's expertise.
Wren's Knowledge Local + Research Bonus: 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 11 + 4 = 23
Wren, however, has recently read a decent amount about werewolves thanks to her hours stuck away reading books.
Werewolves are a race unto themselves who propagate their kind through the traditional fashion. As with the Vollensag you just killed, like attracts like and they tend to form packs with their own internal politics. Werewolves can change themselves into three forms - human, wolf, and hybrid. The werewolves you have encountered have nearly all been in hybrid form.
However, natural werewolves spread a curse/disease (scholarly opinion differs) called lycanthropy through their bites. Those who are thus cursed will become a werewolf on the next full moon, and lose control of their
However, the curse/disease (scholarly opinion differs) lycanthropy can create 'afflicted'. Those who gain the curse of lycanthropy become wolves and lose all sense of identity, typically attacking and killing others. Natural werewolves tend to treat afflicted lycanthropes as playthings or slaves.
Lycanthropy is treated by the divine magic of powerful priests, and can also be purged from the body by eating the poisonous plants wolfshade and belladona. There are countless folk remedies, such as Duristan's scar ward, that may or may not work.
Eldon Appleton |
"We will have to bind him on the evening of the next full moon, and see what happens," Eldon comments with a matter-of-fact voice.
Arval Beyondane |
Hearing Wren tell him about the curse he feels relief wash over him.
"See, I am no werewolf..."
Still not fully sure he scans the bushes around them for the plants Wren mentioned.
Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
GM SpiderBeard |
Remembering the moon from last night, you are extremely close to a full moon in the next day or two.
Not feeling particularly cursed or werewolfy, Arval takes a quick search of the area for belladonna or wolfsbane. Pulling off a gauntlet he successfully yanks a plant from the ground, only to yelp and drop it, his hand covered in raised white bumps. Stinging nettle. Not quite wolfsbane.
Duristan looks cautiously at Arval and lowers his bow.
"Fine, but don't come crying to me when he eats your family. I stopped carrying wolfsbane after I got the scar ward, as you should have done!"
He looks out into the woods.
"My men and I are going to approach from the flank, this way their forces will be divided and we won't have to battle them all at once. Good luck, and don't get eaten!"
With that, Duristan charges off westwards into the woods with a "tally ho!".
Anyone else is free to make survival checks to find some herbs. Update and new location will come tonight as I don't have time to do the full map update right now.

"Full moon is coming soon, best to take the time to find some herbs for Avral. Would be a shame to see Duristan try and wear Avral's pelt, like that poor dog he had skinned." Kawrock does a sweep of the area from the air to find any of the herbs Wren mentioned.

"An ye best no' be threatenin' me friends again, Duristan! I know we been drinkin' together, bu' tha' won't stop me from puttin' me armored boot up yer backside if'n ye be doin' i' again."
Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren clucks and coos and makes ready to continue on to the stairs, satisfied that Arval won't be turning into a werewolf anytime soon.
"Duristan, save your silver for those that really need it and lets get moving on."
Wren preens a bit more, ready to go.
Arval Beyondane |
Arval takes the flask and takes a good long swallow. He pours the rest over the wound after taking off his armor and grimaces.
"Burns!"
He yelps as the first few drops fall on the tender flesh.
"It will leave a pair of nasty scars."
He says when examining the wound more closely.
"If someone could bandage it? I'd rather not take the shirt off now."
After dithering for a little while longer he puts on his armor again and is ready to leave.
Eldon Appleton |
Eldon also searches for the anti-werewolf herbs. Even if Kawrock already finds enough, it doesn't hurt to carry some more.
Survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Whiskeyjack Dunaldthal |
"Come 'ere ye big baby."
Whiskeyjack moved over to look at Arval's wound, muttering as he went. He was surprised to see how deep the wound truly went. Grumbling about careless lads and how they made it hard on poor healers to just relax and drink themselves to sleep, Whiskeyjack pulled his wand out and began sealing Arval's wounds.
Arval, is your HP total in your status bar correct? If not, tell me how many of these you need.

"Terrible feeling, just... unnatural..."
He says as he begins putting back on his armor.
GM SpiderBeard |
Kawrock looks for herbs, assisted by Eldon. Between the eyes in the sky and eyes on the ground, a single small belladonna plant is found. The potent poison, also known as deadly nightshade is carefully picked by Eldon. Arval dutifully swallows some of the small black berries. After a minute, he begins to convulse. However, the poison does not seem to take any serious effect aside from making him foam a little at the mouth. The convulsions eventually pass. His next trip to the latrine may not be fun, but he has taken the medicine. It is now a waiting game to see if it worked.

Pushing southwards, the path opens up ahead to reveal a cleared out section of forest which contains an enormous building.
A wedge-shaped, flat-roofed, trapezoidal edifice is attached to an immense tower of stacked flat stones rising to a dizzying height. Also constructed from large stones, the wedge-shaped building stands about 25 feet tall, though it contains only a single story. A series of arches in the north wall permits access to the interior of the building’s ground floor, while a pair of ascending ramps carved into stairs climbs to meet the spiraling stair that wraps around the tower.
Along the south wall of the temple, the first ramp climbs from the forest floor in a straight path until it reaches the roof of the low building at its western end, 25 feet above the ground. Along its north wall, the opposing ramp doubles back, climbing another 25 feet to connect with the tower and join the staircase spiraling around it. The tower forms a tapering column of solid rock that rises nearly 150 feet above the forest floor, capped with an open-air observatory at the top.
As you move southwards, Kawrock spies more enormous primal werewolves along the edge of a ridge which lines the path. They let out a howl and begin to charge you, but as they approach, a volley of crossbow bolts fly from the top of the tower towards the primal werewolves!
