Lena and Kawrock quickly fire off their spells. Lena's magic missile thunk in solidly while Kawrock's bolt of flame passes through, yet still doing some damage.

Wren gathers herself, moving past the bocking battler, and moves into the room. She draws a wand as she moves. Unable to move on map right now, but can move to any square within one of 'Lena.

"Oh poor, dearie. We'll have to put her out of her misery," Wren looks again at the child, this time with much more pity. "Careful now. Don't let this hit you."

Wren activates the wand, pointing it towards the wraith.

1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 4 = 20 touch to hit; (-combat)
2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 acid damage.

On the next round, the acid burns the wraith again. 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 acid damage.

Since Wren, Lena, and Kawrock are using ranged attacks I've set them up so they can attack without a cover penalty. Wren - you can move your own token on the map so feel free to do so :D

Arval charges in, but his wide swing misses as spells fly around him towards the wraith! Lena's small white burst of energy misses widely, but Wren's acid arrow hits squarely. The arrow flies right through and hisses on the wall, but some of the acid can be seen sizzling on the incorporeal little girl.

The childlike whimpers cease and instead a low, foul hissing sound is heard as Arval engages in melee. She lunges in, swiping at the doughty warrior. Instinctively, he raises his shield to block but her hand passes right through the shield, and numbing cold shoots through his arm.

The sizzling acid seems to take over more and more of the wraith spawn, and finally the dual attacks of Arval's flaming sword and Kawrock's flame bolt hit home, and with a shriek, it vanishes.

The old shack is now silent. The only sound the overgrown crop outside rustling in the wind.

Some more con drain on Arval for 1 point, adjust hp if necessary.

Eldon moves into the cot. "Well done, everyone! Exactly as I taught you! I was observing outside, and it all looked great. Nearly as great as I'd have done it all by myself."

As Eldon also looks around for anything out of the ordinary, he listens to Wren's story and nods approvingly. "Yes, those cabbages remind me of the time I went plucking tomatoes with the king of a faraway nation. It was a sunny afternoon when we headed into the castle yard, where we encountered some of the other nobles. I was introduced to... and the cat winked at her... albeit I had the tomatoes... thus I told him... then the red dragon said... Suffice to say, it was quite hilarious! Hahaha!"

When done talking and searching, Eldon places his hand on Arval's forehead. "Nothing bad, you'll get over it with a bit of rest. Shall I tell a story to boost your energy?"

While the others check over the shack for clues, Kawrock will take look outside to see how many other structures are in the village and how close it is to nightfall.

With the trial ending around 1pm and then a good three hour walk to Hergstag, movement through Lepistadt, and the work done so far it's currently very late afternoon and approaching evening. The sun will likely set in the next hour or so.

A somewhat overgrown track leads south to the lake shore. Westwards lie more buildings. You recall hearing that the Beast lived near Hergstag by the lake. Overall, Kawrock counts around fourteen clusters of buildings, with some standing alone, and others standing in groups of two or three.

Area map is back up which shows a token for the whole group and where you are.

Arval slowly rises and follows the other into the village. Compared to the start of the day he looks a bit pale.
"Shall we find some people to talk to or shall we head for the lake first?"
Tural asks everyone as they arrive.
"If we keep walking we might have some hours of daylight to inspect the lake. "

Eldon points at the two buildings the party's already explored. "If more buildings hold wraiths, like these two buildings did, then there will be no sun to keep them inside."

Wren looks around at the party.

"Oh, poor Stitches, I feel so badly that he is sitting alone, probably worried about what happened to him. We should continue on, day or night, with our search," Wren suggests.

"I would want to go explore the town," Wren says as she begins to walk that way.

I'll take that as a vote for town, so you go west.

With Wren leading the way, the group starts to head westwards towards a series of four buildings set in a square, roughly 100' from each of them.

Wren's Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 1) + 3 = 10

As Wren approaches the first building she steps on something hard, which depresses under her weight.

SNAP!

The jaws of a bear trap spring out from the long grass, clamping brutally around her ankle! Blood seeps from the wound as it holds fast.

Wren takes 10 damage and is stuck in a bear trap. Half movement or a disable device/strength/something clever check to remove.

"SQUAWK!!! PLUMIE!! GET HELP!!!!" Wren begins to howl and whine, stunned and shocked by the sudden attack. Plume, her invisible, incorporeal, and non-existent bird companion, fails to go get any help.

Wren looks from new face to new face to see if any can help.

Whiskeyjack tries prying the trap from the elven woman's foot, then using a few taps of his trusty wand to heal the worst of the damage.

Kawrock clicks his tongue twice. "You went rushing off before we could warn you about the bear traps. One almost got Eldon on the way in." Since Whiskeyjack seems to have everything under control Kawrock will look for other traps.

Arval and Whiskeyjack wrench at the bear trap. While its being pried open, Whiskeyjack jabs Wren's wound with his wand a couple of times, partially healing her poor ankle. However, the bear trap is not quite open far enough...

Another aid another on strength may do the trick. Hint hint.

"You should pull there," Eldon says as he points out where Whiskey should place his hands for better leverage. "It's more effective."

When that doesn't seem to help, Eldon carefully approaches the bear trap and tries to actually help.

Kawrock lets out a sigh as he draws his quarter staff. "You'll never earn one of my feathers if you keep getting yourself stuck like this". He says to Wren as he wedges the staff into the trap to add the leverage needed to get the elf free.

Hurry up. time is passing and I don't want to be caught here in the dark. One on one we are a match but in a group we could be in trouble. And remember, there is a boss spook somewhere round here.

Wren's foot comes free, and with Whiskeyjack's healing the ankle remains tender, but she can walk without too much difficulty. The group make their way westwards to a cluster of buildings. These ones are not barred but are abandoned like the rest, and a quick check over them, while watching very carefully for bear traps, shows them to be empty and devoid of wraith spawn.

From the cluster of four houses, to the north you see a small, whitewashed timber building surrounded by gravestones. Southeast, against the lake, you see a strange tangle of willow trees which have been scarred by fire. However, they appear to have grown in the shape of what was once a shelter.

Because it's been several months out of game and only a day in game, I recommend you guys go back and review your interview with the Beast on page 40 of this thread.

Why would I want one of those feathers? Wren wonders as Kawrock's proximity allows her a good look. Those dishevelled things are more like vericose veins than feathers...not suitable for much. Does he even preen himself properly?

Wren holds her tongue as the tengu works to free her.

"Thank you all for coming to my rescue! I'm so glad to have such good friends around to help! I remember my other good friends...blahblahblah...the green frog seemed to be the leader...blahblahblah...croaked twice...blahblahblah...a fat pig he was attracted...blahblahblah...talking blue flumph with a thing...blahblahblah...juggling chickens...blahblahblah...and the dogfolk who talked...blahblahblah...and don't get me started on the bear we met."

Wren's tongue waggles as the party moves forth, her leg barely limping.

Kawrock lets the loud talkative elf take point. Her vibrant colors and constant talking making her a prime first target if the party gets ambushed, He thinks to himself. He does keep an eye out for more bear traps though.

As Whiskeyjack and Kawrock worked on the trap, the dwarf cogitated about the thought that had been rambling through his mind. Something Brodur had said...

"By Angradd's hairy nut sack! Brodur said th' children were taken by a ghost who lived in a cave up onna hill near here. Betcha tha' be th' wraith wha' did all this! Anyone see a hill around here?" Whiskeyjack immediately started scanning the area, noting the graveyard and the willow stand along the way.

Thinking back Arval remembers what Whiskey just told him.
"You are right! Do we dare go there when it is getting dark?"
He asks a bit on edge.
"Not that I'd rather stay in one of those abandoned houses or anything. Maybe the hill is better actually now that I think about it."
He looks quite nervous at the prospect of going after a wraith in the dark. The moment Whiskey sets off Arval will follow.

A direct testimony from th' victim could prove Brodur's innocence."

But if we kill the boss spook, we may have to fight lots of boss spooks. This might be unwise. But evidence clearing brodur would be good.

It's settled!

The group head to the southwest, out of the village and over the low hill. A moldering scarecrow is atop the hill, leaning on a scythe. Its pumpkin face is carved with a leer and a sheep's jaw hangs flaccidly below. Aside from the sinister scarecrow, which has utterly failed at its task of keeping away birds, there does not appear to be much else on the hill at first glance.

He handles the ransid looking charm around his neck and walks off after grabbing his sword.
"Hold that fire spell ready!"
