Whiskeyjack Dunaldthal |
Whiskeyjack hustled back to stand beside Arval, turfing Eldon out of the way as he did so. He raised his shield and held it to cover Arval and himself, and prepared to swing his mighty hammer.

Eldon Appleton |
"That's just silly, Wren," Eldon comments. "How can I be his son? I'm absolutely flawless, and he's not."
Eldon looks at Arval and Whiskeyjack in front of him, then at Lena and Kawrock plugging the other tunnel through which the large fishman could approach. He moves a small distance away from the warriors in front of him, and decides his position's all dandy.
After taking out his crossbow, Eldon loads it with a bolt. Meanwhile, he shares a story about a fearful creature he recently slayed by shooting it from the sky. "It was a large bat-like demon dragon, and it circled the house I was in! I blasted it with fire, then locked it in a cage, and shot it from the sky with a bolt from this very crossbow! I'll show you the corpse later on, when we return to the surface!"
Inspire Courage +2 continues!
GM SpiderBeard |
Back! Thanks for your patience. Wren, I guessed at the best acid pit location - point is it made its save and circled back around.
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
As the mega-skum arrives to start beating on the wall, Wren pops off an acid pit, which it leaps back, just avoiding. Arval and Whiskeyjack stand fast while the pit blocks off the tunnel. Everyone gets in position, and as the wall drops with a satisfying wonk sound, Lena blasts the creature with a pair of scorching rays. It looks at the pit, looks at all of you, and roars, circling back the way it came to take another run at you!
The skum has now circled around back to the south. Everyone is up![

Nicely done tactically.
Arval just plants his feet and lets the rest of the part rain hell on the mega-Skum. Two more scorching rays and a magic missile find their target while Whiskeyjack stomps into place. With a quick swing, he kneecaps the skum, and then caves its skull in with a hammer. His insane gibbering finally ceases.
End of Combat
You take a while to look over the area and the bodies of the strange skum. The massive one was likely very, very old, although something had clearly driven him insane. His axe has a strange design and is magical.
This axe is ancient, around 2,000 years old.
You find the following items of value in the chamber:
- +1 defending greataxe
- amulet of natural armour +2
- a dozen assorted gems worth 50 gp
- two fishgold bracelets, worth around 450 gp together
Peering down the tunnels from the two rooms you see that they meet. The foul stench to the northwest is coming from an enormous midden heap, the results of god-knows-how-long of skum garbage.
You can explore the midden or push westwards.
Wren the FeatherMage |
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25 Know (History)
Wren takes a look about, wondering why the big one was so insane...but then remembered that not everyone was a lovely person like she was.
She identifies the magics and looks around. She will follow Arval whichever way he goes.
Arval Beyondane |
Arval avoids the midden heap, not even thinking about rummaging through it. He makes his was through the caves, towards the unexplored hallway.
Whiskeyjack Dunaldthal |
Whiskeyjack spat upon the large skum, then shook teh goo off of his hammer. "Ye know, when things like tha' are abou', ye ge' th' feelin' tha' this ain't a happy little fishin' village. Still, some good treasure on 'em. Anyone want this fancy amulet? One o' ye squishy types perhaps? I be thinkin' we should probably jest throw tha' axe in th' bag. no one 'ere ken be usin' i' too effectively."
Whiskeyjack felt the same as Arval about jumping into the midden, but he thought they had better at least search it for magical items while they were there. He paused a moment and activated his arcane sight.

Something's Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Whiskey's Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
Whiskeyjack approaches the midden and from a distance casts a detect magic spell. After a moment he can recognize at least one magical aura buried in the trash. However as he looks in, he notices that there is... something organic and large in the trash, lying still, but its hard to tell from yellowish, dusty fungus everywhere. It has not moved yet.
Vladlena |
Careful whiskeyjack, that looks icky
GM SpiderBeard |
It continues to stay perfectly still but you take a while to stare at this thing and it finally clicks in this is some kind of shambling mound. However, it appears fungal rather than plant-based - like a living yellow mold. The spores are assuredly very dangerous if disturbed.
You have some knowledge of this rare variant. It is empowered by electricity, resistant to fire, and resistant to damage from piercing and bludgeoning weapons. As a plant it is immune to mental attacks, poison, paralysis, sleep, and polymorph.
Wren the FeatherMage |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"STOP JACK!! THAT THING IS DANGEROUS!" Wren caws at W'Jack. "Better let someone more expendable, like Arval, provoke it. It's like one of them....<read spoilers above>...blahblahblah...moldy stuff betwixt my toes...blahblah...spread on toast. Delicious!"
Again, Wren explains the spoilers above.
Wren moves back, readying her wand should the goons which to provoke the shambling mold.
"As a reminder, don't use fire!" She glares at Kawrock.
Wren the FeatherMage |
Did...did you just draw a comparison between a fungal shambling mound to vegemite????
Uh, maybe. I don't pay too much attention to what Wren says (it's better that way)...so maybe. Also, toe cheese. <involuntary shivers>
Wren looks at Arval, wondering what set the man off, and then focuses on the not-mound.
When others are ready, she will shoot it with her wand of Magic Missile.
4d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 3) + 4 = 18 damage.
GM SpiderBeard |
The group lines up, looking at Wren uncertainly. She zaps the spore mound with the wand of magic missile, and that seems to do it. It lets out a weird blurping sound and rises out of the midden, yellow spores floating in the air around it as it approaches.

Arval, Whiskeyjack, and Kawrock all move in on the spore mound while Wren flings off another magic missile. Both give the spore mound mighty whacks, but as they do so puffs of yellow mold burst into the air. Both Whiskeyjack and Kawrock find themselves reacting badly to different spores. Eldon begins his usual babbling while Lena fires off an acid arrow into the spore mound.
Worse yet, Whiskeyjack's attack appears to have been entirely ineffective, while Kawrock's slashing blade does a much better job.

Arval charges in and just misses terribly as his sword almost gets lost in the garbage. Lena is more fortunate as she mildly scorches the fetid spore mound, but the strength of the fire manages to burn off a ton of the spores, giving Whiskeyjack an opportunity to hammer at the spore mound without being hit by the spores.
