Did anyone take the +2 bastard sword? In no one claimed it Kawrock would not be able to resist picking it up.

"As much as Duristan seems to be an idiot. I think there might be more to him then we think. It still bothers me that he knew exactly where to find the stairs of the moon." Kawrock says as he picks through the battle field.

Wren, as stated above, is ready to go.

Wren doesn't want the bastard sword. :)

Also, post 5000+!! w00t! Squawk!

YAAY! Look at us go!

The group start exploring the area trying to figure out where the tracks lead. They head east, rapidly. As you spend the time finding the tracks, you hear footsteps coming down the path from behind you. You prepare for more fighting, and instead see a group of Varisians approaching with their hands up. They are armed, but do not appear to be violent.

"We wish to speak! No violence. I am Rhakis Szadro of the Princes Wolves, I believe we share a common enemy in the Whispering Way."

Kawrock will listen if any of these people say anything interesting in varisian. Which Kawrock speaks fluently.

Though I can imagine you're a bit confused, because my eye color's different. Though I can easily explain that! I am not only epically famous, but have also become Desna's chosen one quite recently. Eldon walks up to the nearest Varisian and pats him on his/her arm, because he can't reach the human's shoulder. "Come, do tell me! What can you tell us about the Whispering Way, and how do you know we're after them?"

The man chooses to ignore Whiskeyjack's insulting tone and speaks plainly.

Wren's research on the wolves tells her that the Princes Wolves are a Varisian and have some reputed ties to the Sczarni crime family. Although they are infamously capricious and untrustworthy, they also have no reputation for violence.

"We are the Princes Wolves, one of the wolf tribes of the Shudderwood. Our tribe are ancient enemies of the Whispering Way. It is known they murdered Kvalca Sain, plunging our people into a civil war we want no part of. I want to parley to share information on our common enemy."

"Sure," Wren agrees, "I can speak of much. And much more deeply than any of these. Great is the wisdom and knowledge within me. I am like the night owl and the wise raven rolled into this beautiful elven form." Wren offers a yellow toothy smile.

"The Whispering Way have fled, as you likely know, with Kvalca Sain's heart towards Feldgrau if I was to guess. This is a complication to an already difficult war we have been trying to stay out of. I have sent some of my pack after the Whispering Way to retrieve the heart."

He gestures to the tracks all over the place.

"The hated Jezeldans - the Demon Wolves are the ones who slaughtered your friends. They worship demons and are your enemies regardless of the situation. Their stench is all over this clearing. If they retrieve that heart, they will attack your Lodge, they will slaughter the innocents of Lozeri, and the Shudderwood will be a place of cruelty and violence. They cannot get that heart. If they fail to retrieve the heart, then Cybrisa will be unquestioned as Packlord, and we can return to a state of peace."

He pauses for a moment.

"I will give you tokens which will mark you as allies of the Princes Wolves. My people will not harm you and will cooperate with you. What we want is the heart removed or destroyed. Cybrisa has named herself packlord and if her status is unchallenged, peace can reign."

"As we have already come to an agreement with Cybrisa it would be in our best interest to help those that support her. We will take these tokens you offer and do our best to support your pack." Part Four: The Race to Feldgrau

The Story Thus Far

The Whispering Way have stolen the heart of Kvalca Sain, the Packlord of the werewolf tribes of Shudderwood. A Packlord's Heart has near-religious significance, as consuming the heart is the only way one can become the true ruler of the Shudderwood werewolves. This theft has caused a civil war as the five tribes split into two factions. On one side the Silverhides and the Broken Ones, on the other the Primals and the Demon Wolves. The Princes Wolves remain neutral.

The Silverhides' leader, Mathus Mordinracht, had consumed but a part of the heart to give him a claim to legitimacy. He had conspired with the Whispering Way to slay Kvalca Sain, giving the heart in exchange for his crown. Your mission was to stop the Whispering Way, and in doing so found yourself thrown into the chaos of werewolf politics.

Cutting the proverbial knot, you stormed a meeting of the Broken ONes and Silverhides, slew Mathus, and allowed Cybrisa to claim Mathus' body, becoming the new Packlord. There, you then restored the temple and received a blessing of Desna. Clues you found indicated where you can finally come face to face with the Whispering Way: the ghost town of Feldgrau. 130 miles away in the county of Ardeal.

There, the Demon Wolves and Princes Wolves have both pursued the Whispering Way, after the Packlord's heart. You have formed an alliance of sorts with the Princes Wolves, agreeing to fight a common enemy in the Whispering Way, and prevent the psychotic Demon Wolves from claiming the heart.

When last we left our heroes...

You have been marching for days, thumbing the tokens given to you by the Princes Wolves in your pocket. The Shudderwood is a claustrophobic, unsettling place to be, and very dangerous. Thankfully, you seem to have developed a reputation and you are left alone. Finally, after two and a half days of hard marching, you break out of the woods. For a moment, you can enjoy the sun beating down on you and the feel of wide open spaces. A short walk later, you arrive at a waypoint on your way to Feldgrau - the "city" of Chastel.

Prominently positioned at the crossroads of the Vistear and Vhatsuntide rivers, Chastel exaggerates by calling itself Lozeri’s largest city. While undoubtedly the county’s most populous community, the aggrandized
township lacks the size or stature of a true city, being more akin to an overgrown farming hamlet with a market that fills its central plaza, spreads down the main avenue, and spills forth to partially encircle the town.

You make your way into Chastel, and although your motley crew gets a lot of strange looks, Chastel is above all a trading hub, and weirdos have their place here.

You're finally at a settlement where you can buy/sell things. Chastel has a 10k purchsae limit and a 2k base value. Your base magical items like anything with a +1 is available without question.

Wren considers what she knows once she realizes that the party is actively on the way to Feldgrau in the county of Ardeal.

"I think Feldgrau is where I met the man with both a...blahblahblah...could shoot both ways at the same time...blahblahblah...had to pay double with the...blahblahblah...because he couldn't find enough socks...blahblahblah...and then it was one onion for each...blahblahblah...but the only way to swivel and fit the corncob...blahblahblah...and that's how we discovered peanut butter," Wren remembers as she walks.

Uh, do we have an up to date treasure sheet with what we have to sell? How does this group do distributions and whatnot?

Base Value (2K) and Purchase Limit(10K):
This section lists the community's base value for available magic items in gp (see Table: Available Magic Items). There is a 75% chance that any item of this value or lower can be found for sale in the community with little effort. If an item is not available, a new check to determine if the item has become available can be made in 1 week. A settlement's purchase limit is the most money a shop in the settlement can spend to purchase any single item from the PCs. If the PCs wish to sell an item worth more than a settlement's purchase limit, they'll either need to settle for a lower price, travel to A larger city, or (with the GM's permission) search for a specific buyer in the city with deeper pockets. A settlement's type sets its purchase limit.

.

Although Wren doesn't know too much about the layout of Ardeal aside from it being farms and plains, she has a pretty good understanding of its history.

Ardeal takes its name from Ardealia, first wife of Ustalav's founder and unifer - Soividia Ustav. The city of Ardis was the original capital to Ustalav for a millenia, until the last King fell before the Whispering Tyrant and breaking the line of Ustalavic Kings. After the Shining Crusade drove away the ancient lich king, Ardeal was torn into fiefdoms between the ruling nobility who looted the land, enforcing unsustainable farming practices that reduced once great soil to dust.

When the capital was finally moved from Ardis to Caliphas, Ardeal was left to rot. Noble estates now stand empty, lands left to lie fallow or in the hands of squatters. Sustenance farming is the norm here as serfs left to die by their masters claimed what they could. With meagre central government and a dwindling population, Ardeal is prey to the rest of Ustalav. Its borders steadily shrink and its people are simple prey for bandits, werewolves, and worse.

This campaign has never done serious treasure tracking, I think a side effect of it being so stingy with loot. I'll create a loot tracking spreadsheet and figure out what everyone should have by this point. That's a weekend goal though.

let's go shopping

.

Let's get going. I'll be kind and say your shopping cutoff is next Monday but going to get the game moving anyways.

Happy to have a break and enjoy civilization (as much as this town is civilization) for once, you head out into the great planes of Ardeal. Your final destination, Feldgrau is in an area called the Furrows. With that new knowledge, Wren knows far more about this area and its history.

The Tale of the Furrows:

Around forty years ago, Ustalav was embroiled in a civil war shortly after the revolution which established the Palatinates known as the War Without Rivals. Count Neska of Barstoi was infuriated by the King's mismanagement of the resources of bountiful farmland in Ardeal, and so raised and army and conquered it.

The invasion was tenacious and brutal, tearing apart the land with a decade of trench warfare. Eventually, Barstoi lost the land. In their bitterneess, they set fire to what remained of Furcina, and then sewed the land with salt. The resulting wastelands were renamed the Furrows.

Feldgrau, in the heart of the Furrows, was the scene of a brutal crime. Not abandoned, the army of Count Neska spent a night there as they withdrew from Ardeal. As a thanks for the town's hospitality, they butchered the citizens and put the town to torch. This is where you now go.

Your journey through the plains of Ardeal is without issue as you travel steadily eastwards. The land here is flat and wide open, and and being a large, armed presence on the roads you go unmolested. The people here appear to almost entirely be sustenance farmers and there is little that would suggest a central government which does anything for the land.

You see the black waste of the Furrows appraoching as you head down a gentle slope towards your destination. Here, you see something interesting on the road.

The silhouette of a lone farmhouse stands against the stark gray sky. The house leans uneasily, its weathered planks straining to keep the fragile shell of peeling paint and cracked shingles upright. The bodies of four wolf-like humanoids hang from a large tree in the farm's yard.

Wren stares at the bodies and the tree from a safe distance. She rocks on her pidgeontoed feet as she considers.

"Oh dearie, that reminds of that one gentleman I used to know. He loved to be...blahblahblah...two hands, one gnome...blahblahblah...until he could see through time...blahblahblah...then became two cups, one gnome...blahblahblah...ended with all of us laughing. It was a nice time."

Wren stays far back.

"But I do wonder what could hang werewolves on trees? Must be something very strong and big, don't you think? I don't see any giants around? Maybe a titan or two?" Wren looks for castles in the clouds while she waits to see what others do.

Whiskeyjack held his newly enchanted warhammer at the ready, as well as his shield, as they approached the farmhouse. He didn't like the look of things, though that was hardly a surprise. After the last month or so, he'd likely have a heart attack and go sober if they happened upon a freshly painted building with friendly people welcoming them for a feast.

As he tried to get a look around the farm, the wind kicked up. A swirl of dirt flew into Whiskeyjack's face, and he began to cough, eyes tearing up.

Lena and Arval:

You approach the ordinary looking tree and start inspecting the bodies. Strangely enough it does appear like these werewolves did not revert to their human form upon death. The others have also started acting strangely as they suddenly react strongly to the tree and draw their weapons! The tree stands there without doing anything.

Everyone Else:

As you approach the tree, a puff of greyish spores shoot out over the group. Your vision swims briefly but you manage to cling to reality. However, Arval and Lena seem somewhat entranced. As you realize that something strange is happening, you notice that the bodies of "werewolf skeletons" are now instead human skeletons.

The tree then animates, and rears back before firing vines at the group!

Knowledge Nature DC 22 (Arval/Lena may not roll):

This is a hangman's tree, which is an enormous carnivorous plant which entrances its victims with its spores before drawing them in with its spines and eating them whole. The stripped skeletons are then hung outside.

GM question since I have seen different rulings on this. Since I've already cast produce flame and my BaB is now high enough for a second attack on a full round action. Could I throw my flame twice as a full round action next round?

The ability doesn't specify once per round, so yes. It's not like that it'll be OP if you get your iterative attack with it.

Arval and Lena:

Whiskeyjack screams in rage and runs towards the tree, beating on it with his hammer while Kawrock starts throwing fireballs at it and Eldon actually tries to fence with it.

Kawrock and Eldon then grab their necks and start twitching and choking for no apparent reason. The tree does nothing and is obviously very harmless. Your friends are obviously under the effects of some insane hallucination.

Btw there are additional will saves for the group in this I'm rolling privately.

[spoiler=Everyone Else]
As Whiskeyjack's worst nightmare comes to bear he charges in at the tree, which lashes out reactively at him! He blocks the attack, and manages to whack the tree but good. Kawrock's fire bolt slams into the side of hte tree but dissipates harmlessly as it resists his magic. Finally Eldon bravely charges up, assumes a perfect fencing position, and then jabs at the tree to little effect.

The tree retaliates and rears back before whipping out three vines for different people. Kawrock, Eldon, and Whiskeyjack all feel the long vines wrap around their necks before they are yanked high into the air! Whiskeyjack, being a doughty dwarf, keeps his feet on the gruond.

Finally, Wren acts, scorching the tree with acid.

Kawrock and Eldon take 12 damage each, are grappled, and have been hoisted 15' in the air! You are strangled and unable to speak or cast spells with verbal components. Whiskeyjack takes 12 damage, is grappled, but is not pulled into the air.

Oops, sorry. With an Init of 20, not sure why Wren is going after the tree though. I'll continue to front load.

Gah, I don't know how I saw your initiative as low, Wren. Must have read 2 instead of 20. So you're not front-loading anything!

Arval and Lena:

Lena, you start to get ready to blast the tree, but then realize it's just a simple tree and there's absolutely no need for violence. You refrain from casting your spell.

Lena:

As you struggle with the urge to attack the tree, you suddenly seem to snap out of it. Your vision clears, and you can now see that the tree is animate. THree of your friends are being choked by vines and look to be in a bad shape. This killer tree is on a rampage!

Arval staggers around slurring and helpless.

You are no longer hallucinating and can act normally next round.

Everyone Else:

Whiskeyjack starts wailing away at the tree with his war hammer, cutting great gouges into it as he is hauled by the throat. Eldon struggles mightily against the vine around his throat but it is far too powerful.

Arval staggers around, loopily shouting for everyone to calm down while Lena seems to snap out of the trance over her. Kawrock gags as he swings his weapon wildly at the tree vine, but does not manage to actually do much. A huge horrifying mouth then opens in the tree, and Whiskeyjack and Eldon are pulled into the open mouth! The vines slowly constrict around the three heroes' necks.
