Slothsy |
Hello All!
Welcome to GM Slothsy's Emporium! If you haven't played a game with me before, please know a few things.
1) I use google slides to host maps, handouts, etc. Please keep up to date with it during the game. It'll be linked by my avatar shortly.
2) Your participation matters! If you don't post, the game doesn't move on. Even if it's a short post, it''ll be good to know that you're checking in.
3) I like PbPs because they're immersive. Take time to RP, especially with each other. I'll favorite people's posts that I find to be particularly enjoyable. Take the time to really have your character inhabit the world and describe their actions. How do you approach the guard? How do you swing your sword? What makes you pause?
4) I go by the rule of two. If two players agree to an action and no one dissents, then that happens. It keeps things moving.
I can't think of anything else to say except: Welcome! I hope you all have fun.
Slothsy |
I think we're waiting for Zinou to check in. Once he's done so, I'll post the briefing (if you feel your party comp is suitable).
So far, we have:
Paladin 5
Inquisitor 6
Skald 6
Oracle/Sorceror 9
Arcane Duelist 7
APL is 6.7, which means we round up and play up with the 4-player adjustment. Is everyone on board with that?
Edit: You also all have recieved a PM from me asking for a specific request.
I also need to know what scenarios you've played with this character.
Silas Proth |
If the scenario is 5-9, and the APL is 6.7, doesn't that put us in the bottom subtier?
This character has played:
The Night March of Kalkamedes
The Wounded Wisp
The Confirmation
The Haunting of Harrowstone (3 xp, credit)
The Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment
The Slave Master's Mirror
Between the Lines (credit)
True Dragons of Absalom (credit)
The Enigma Vaults (3 xp)

APL 6.7 rounds up to 7, which is out-of sub-tier. Because there are more than 4 of us, we play high sub-tier with the 4 player adjustment.
If you'd like, I can select a lower level character. I have several in the 6-7 range. If so, what kind of character would you prefer
Available at tier 5-9:
6) Barbarian, Summoner, Kineticist
7) Wizard (Conjurer), Investigator
8) Magus
9) Sorcerer
Silas Proth |
Nah that's fine with me, I was just making sure. If you're going to play up a whole subtier, a paladin is probably the best class to do it with-- and I do love a challenge!

Also, could I use Diplomacy for gather information (to have already known this through social interactions)?

The research system represents the PCs’ sorting through extensive collections of texts, investigating subtle clues, and track down hidden leads in several different collections. A collection can be almost any source of information used for research, ranging from a complete library to a chest of disorganized documents.
Each research challenge is like an encounter and has two key statistics: a Complexity rating, which reflects the level of complexity of the information being searched, and knowledge points (kp), which are an abstract representation of the amount of information a given collection contains. A research challenge’s Complexity rating acts as the DC for a Research check to unravel that library’s clues. A Research check is akin to a Knowledge skill check, though many research challenges note additional skills a PC can use for that collection.
Attempting a Research check requires an uninterrupted 8-hour period of research, and a character cannot take 10 or take 20 on a Research check. Each 8-hour period of research grants a cumulative +1 bonus on Research checks in that collection. Up to two additional characters can use the aid another action to assist a primary researcher. In addition, some libraries grant a Knowledge bonus—a bonus on specific Knowledge checks (including Research checks) made within that library—due to the depth and completeness of its collections. Research checks cannot be made untrained unless the skill could normally be used untrained.
Succeeding at a Research check reduces a research challenge’s knowledge points, similar to dealing damage to a creature’s hit points. The damage dealt by the primary researcher varies based on her training in the skill she used for the Research check. A primary researcher reduces a collection’s kp by 1d12 + her Intelligence modifier if she has either the Skill Focus feat in the skill or has both 5 ranks in the skill and treats the skill as a class skill. Reduce this to 1d8 + her Intelligence modifier if she has either 5 ranks in the skill or treats the skill as a class skill (but not both). Otherwise, she reduces the collection’s kp by 1d4 + her Intelligence modifier. For every 5 by which a Research check exceeds the collection’s Complexity rating, the primary researcher decreases the kp total by 1 additional point. Rolling a natural 20 on a Research check acts like a critical threat, doubling the kp reduction if a second Research check with the same modifiers (taking no additional time) succeeds. Conversely, rolling a natural 1 on a Research check automatically results in failure, and the collection’s kp increases by 1/4 its maximum knowledge point total as the collection’s complexity causes a researcher to follow a wrong avenue of research.
As the knowledge points are decreased to various “trigger points,” the PCs uncover the collection’s corresponding secrets. By the time a collection’s kp total is reduced to 0, the PCs have learned all that they can from that library. In order to learn more, they must visit another collection and continue their research there.
Skill Focus OR Class Skill + 5 ranks – 1d12+INT
5 ranks OR Class Skill – 1d8+Int
Base – 1d4+Int
Exceed DC by 5 - +1 for every 5
Nat 20 – Critical Threat, roll to confirm to double KP reduction
Nat 1 – Critical fail, increases KP by ¼ maximum

I just wanted to let you know before anyone else (as I promised) that my next game as a GM will be The Sanos Abduction (#4-05). It's a crazy 3-7 game I played in a convention this week-end. If you want to play and have a character available, please subscribe on my speadsheet :)
Rolando Pascal |
Is there any benefit to trying the different types of skill checks? I have ranks in all four of the skills, but my best two are knowledge arcana and history, both at plus 10 (not including the library bonus or Raska's lackey bonus)
Silas Proth |
No worries Slothsy. You've been updating more than a lot of other GM's I've had, and anyway we all know life happens.
Shamak |
No problems :)
Lord Ras'ka la Vas'ka |
Oh great and powerful GM, Slothsy, when hiring students as paid interns from the Arcanamirium, will I be paying 1 gp per day per intern (scribe) or 15 gp per day per intern (sage)?
This way we can each have two little aid-another bots and each make our own skill checks, even if that research is separate. It highly increases the odds that we'll be able to find good information, and quickly. This is coin I will gladly spend (to help give scholarship to the Arcanamirium students, of course). We can call it the Ras'ka la Vas'ka Pathfinder Research Internship.
For 5 players, that will be either 10 gp per day or 150 gp per day.
Slothsy |
Hmm, I will say that you can find yourself a set of scribes (1 gp per day) who are excited to be involved in some real-life research. They're trying to build their resume, you see, as the Arcanamirium has a rather low acceptance rate. They're all fresh-faced and good workers, but some of them (looking at you, Kyras) have a hard time understanding that you need to be at work at 8 AM, not leave the house at 8 AM. Kids these days.

Does my memory ever return?

Slothsy |
Silas, you were targetted with a repress memory spell. It will take a break enchantment, psychic surgery , limited wish, miracle, or wish to restore those memories to you.
Silas Proth |
Having played 322 in Serpents Rise, I'm thoroughly enjoying this whole scenario :-)

Shamak |
Yup! Rataji (with the "spoils of the siege Rataji" boon) :)
Silas Proth |
I applied it to a different character, and I'd need to wait until after work to check but I read it as the boon only applies to the character who gets it.
Torean Spellbane |
So I've played Serpent's Rise, but I've been holding the chronicle for when I have a 7th level character. Does that still count? I played Marnarius.
Slothsy |
Yep, it still counts. There's a lot of flexibility. However, spoiler alert this is the scenario for 322, so only those with the boons for 322 will be getting the special thing.
I chose GM credit for 322 myself. I haven't gotten to play Serpent's Rise yet. At this point, since I've run it 4 times, doing that would feel weird.
Shamak |
Deepmarket Deception is for the brawler, but I don't know any others.
Shamak |
To all my games: I'm struggling to have some wifi from Tuesday. I don't know when it'll be stable. If my character is blocking the game, please bot him or place him in delay. Sorry for that!
