Darren the Daring |
"You're a brave woman, Nijena." Darren admiringly watches her enter the room.

GM Sior |
Darren and Kuran watch as Nijena enters the room and heads towards the bridge by the pillar.
Tessa and Clossym?
Tessa Firdorn |
Tessa investigates the circular trap and arrow slits to make sure that it is not going to riddle the entire group in arrows causing their immediate deaths.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
This doesn't look activated at all. Tessa says as she waves her hand at it.
Lets head through there next. She says pointing to the southern door.
GM Sior |
Did Blossym step away again/still? Understandable, of course, just curious.
GM Sior |
Blossym peeks around the corner at the two women in the room.
With a sudden whir of gears and pulleys, the central column begins to spin and the door swings shut! 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22 Darren is able to catch it before it latches, providing him and everyone outside the room with cover from...
With disturbing frequency, the arrows in the recesses are launched at everyone in a barrage of blunt projectiles!
How it's gonna work:
Each round, every person in the room or in the hall (unless the door is shut) will get attacked by a random number of arrows. This will continue until the trap has expired its ammunition, which appears to be a lot.
Arrows start flying everywhere, including through the door! Blossym takes one arrow to the shoulder and is quickly thankful that they are non-lethal arrows. Darren also takes a blow a little closer to the neck as he holds the door!
Inside the room, Nijena takes two blows from the flying arrows which only bruise her further!
Tessa however is far less fortunate. The first arrow is enough to render the sorcerer unconscious under a barrage of arrows. Another flies out, tilting her head to the side with a final one, seeming to develop a flaw, punches through its blunt end and sending its shaft directly through the unfortunate sorcerer's body.
Blossym: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 for 1d8 ⇒ 3
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 for 1d8 ⇒ 2
Darren: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Nijena: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 for 1d8 ⇒ 8
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18 for 1d8 ⇒ 3
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15 for 1d8 ⇒ 5
Tessa: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 for 1d8 ⇒ 8
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 for 1d8 ⇒ 7
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 for 1d8 ⇒ 8
Confirm: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 for 2d8 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11
Blossym - 3 NL dmg
Darren - 4 NL dmg
Kuran - Out of line of effect
Nijena - 16 NL dmg
Tessa - 7 NL, 27 lethal damage, deceased
Party up
Darren the Daring |
Darren doesn't question the Paladin and immediately brings the door completely closed.
shouldn't that be 15 nonlethal and 17 lethal for Tessa?

Kuran Abrath |
I hate being right, I hate being right, I hate being right, Kuran repeats in his mind. He hasn't seen what happened to Tessa, but hears the sounds of agony and those many arrows flying. He's shaking and sweating profusely, and the fear in his eyes is visible to the common eye.
"G-get back here! For the l-love of Iomedae, g-get back here!"
Kuran Abrath |
Tessa got very unlucky and got very high damages from the arrows. The arrows themselves deal nonlethal damage, but once they accumulate to your total hit point amount, all further nonlethal damage is lethal damage. So in essence the first arrow put Tessa unconscious and with 1 lethal damage. The rest of the arrows dealt 26 points of damage, essentially putting Tessa to -20 hitpoints. Link to nonlethal damage rules.
GM Sior |
I checked it several times because I wanted to be wrong about the non-lethal conversion. Tessa, may I have your PFS info for reporting purposes? Thankfully, you are still free to replay the module as it's an evergreen should you decide to do so at a later date.
Darren closes the door as Nijena drops down to defend herself. Her tactic seems to work wonderfully as the arrows fly over her prone form and bounce against her shield! Assuming total defense as well?
The pillar meanwhile shows no sign of stopping. (Read, 8 rounds left unless disabled.)
Nijena: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 for 1d8 ⇒ 3
Arrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 for 1d8 ⇒ 2
Party up. Same strategy?
Nijena Tajar |
Yes, everything that increases her AC
While Nijena lies on the floor she has a look around for a lever or anything to disable the assault.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
GM Sior |
Nijena sees all of the inner workings within the pillar which can only be accessed via the bridge across to it. Also of note is the fact that the door leading to the rest of the party shows no method of being opened from this side. Two other doors lead out of this room, however.

Kuran Abrath |
Once the door closes and the arrows only thump the outside, Kuran peeks around the corner. He's visibly shaking, and starts counting each colleague with his finger. "W-where's Tessa, and Nijena?" he asks with a trembling voice, "don't tell me you left them on the other side..."
Darren the Daring |
"Nijena said to close the door. I closed the door. Tessa was already through. I hope she's alright."

GM Sior |
If it makes you feel any better, the trigger was opening the door. It activated one round later.

Kuran Abrath |
"J-just how long is that death trap going to work? They'll die in there!" Kuran shrieks in terror, grasping his shield instinctively, "Nijena! Tessa! Hold on tight! Don't die!"
Nijena Tajar |
Yes, that makes me (the player) feel better, but maybe not Nijena. But she has not found out what happened to Tessa, she's still busy with dodging arrows.
in Nijena's next round(s)
Nijena robs on the floor, trying to cross the bridge to reach the trap mechanism. She will try to disable the mechanism. She's not trained in disabling traps, but maybe she can determine how to do it with intelligence. If she's not able to disable it, she will simply smash the mechanism with her sword.
Disable: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
GM Sior |
Will take you 5 move actions to crawl to the pillar. 5 turns taking full defense, 2.5 just crawling.
Nijena crawls along the floor. One arrow gets past her defenses but only results in a bruise. (18 NL)
A few seconds later, another arrow manages to leave a bruise on her uncovered arms. (21 NL)
Right as she gets to the pillar, she examines the mechanism and... takes another arrow to the head. The blow knocks her unconscious! (23 NL, 2 lethal)
For the record, I am counting that last round as still doing total defense, otherwise there may well be another corpse in the room...

Kuran Abrath |
Kuran has been frantically panicking about the wounds others have got, having no idea in what sort of condition the others are.
"Oh no, and Nijena's the only one with magical healing!" Kuran whimpers, only then noticing the injuries are just bruises, "and, uh... oh. I guess we'll just have to take a break. Surely Nijena and Tessa are alright then, right? Right?"
Darren the Daring |
"We'll just have to wait and see once the arrows stop pinging off the door. They can't go on forever."

Kuran Abrath |
Of course Nijena could have used Lay on Hands on herself at some point, since it's a swift action on herself.
Nijena Tajar |
Nijena is prone, so she has a +4 to AC against the ranged attacks so she would have AC16, with a +10 that means a 70% chance to get hit. Actually I thought Nijena would reach the pillar faster XD.
GM Sior |
You are correct. I made a mistake calculating your crawl speed. How, I don't know, but I did. You would have made it in round 5. However, that check is insufficient to disarm it, so the round 5 attacks would still go off. Retcon before the onslaught of round 6 and 7 arrows since you got there sooner?
Nijena Tajar |
That would be 8 hit points and probably safe my life :D What can I do to disarm it? At the beginning of round 6 I'm still conscious, right? Can Nijena just smash it with her sword? I think I have one or two round left before the arrows knock me out.
Nijena tries to smash the mechanism with her sword.
Smash: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 - 4 = 6 Round 6
Smash: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 4 = 18 Round 7
Disable: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 Round 6
Disable: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 Round 7
now she falls unconscious, if I got it right
GM Sior |
Nijena moves in and stands to attempt her smashing attempts. The first attempt does not go well and, as she drops prone again, an arrow punches her in the gut. (Round 6 attack)
Still determined, she stands again and smashes the mechanism.
The pillar continues to rotate, an arrow nocking itself right at the level of Nijena's head. With a twang, you hear the firing mechanism fail, showing Nijena's success in killing the deadly machine!
FWIW, it had 3 rounds of arrows left.
After 20 seconds or so, a resounding click is heard from the door to the south.
Darren the Daring |
Darren waits a moment after the noises stop, to make sure they're done, then opens the door a crack, "NIJENA! TESSA! Are you alive in there?!"
-Posted with Wayfinder
Nijena Tajar |
Nijena, almost fainting, sits down for a moment. When she realizes that Tessa was with her in the room she rushes over to her to see if Nijena can help. When she sees that there is no chance to safe Tessa Nijena kneels down next to the pierced body and says "I'm sorry I did not stop the machine earlier. I'm sorry I was not here to help you."
Kuran Abrath |
"It... it must've stopped!" Kuran whimpers, "quick, Darren, go see if they are alright!"
Kuran, the brave coward, remains behind the corner, barely peeking around it to see what's really happening.
Darren the Daring |
Darren can't hear what Nijena says, but he can hear her tone... "Oh no." He opens the door and comes to sit beside the fallen wizardess.

Kuran Abrath |
Kuran sees Tessa's dead body, heavily bruised by blood-soaked blunt arrows for the first time, and he almost vomits. Feeling ill just seeing her makes him retreat from the room, and he audibly gasps for air.
"R-regroup outside and d-discuss whether we can c-continue," he says around the corner, "and b-bring Tessa's body for b-burial."
Darren the Daring |
Darren covers Tessa with a blanket and then quietly picks up the Wizardess and carries her outside of the building.
"Should we bury her here?"
-Posted with Wayfinder
Kuran Abrath |
"But does anyone know where she lives? Or even if she has any relatives alive?! A-and foremost, how would we get her body to anywhere without letting it rot!" Kuran whimpers, clearly not understanding Nijena's point, "we should bury her here, close to the entrance, as a grave warning for anyone daring to enter this death trap!"
Darren the Daring |
Darren nods at Nijena. How do we get her body back...
-Posted with Wayfinder
Nijena Tajar |
"I'm sure the Society knows. I have a bad feeling leaving a body somewhere in the middle of nowhere. We can also put a small memorial close to the entrance. I can draw a picutre of her if somebody wants to write some lines." Nijena says. "I'm sure we can build some makeshift barrow."
not sure how recovering bodies works in PFS, but nevertheless Nijea would like to investigate further ;)
Once Nijena is healed up she prepares to move on.
How much lethal damage is left?
